Not an impact player.

Kohli is in IPL what Babar Azam is as an international LOI batsman.

I would add Shane Watson to the list.

I would add Shane Watson to the list.

Definitely didn't make the list before giving it a thought. Watson has had his impact at many crucial junctures in the IPL. He probably is right up there maybe.

He indeed played many important innings. If I remember correctly, it was Shane Watson who played a crucial role in RR winning the first IPL.

As of Oct 2020:

1. Christopher Henry Gayle
2. Dhoni
3. ABD
4. Suresh Raina
5. Pollard
6. Warner
7. Rohit
8. KL Rahul (rising up the ranks)
9. Malinga
10. Bumrah

List subjected to change but top 3 might not change for me.

Damn Nehra is actually a better bowler than I give him credit for.
I think Nehra might be Pakistan's best odi bowler had he played for them at present.

Suresh Raina, hands down, has been the best of the Indian batsmen in the IPL.

Consistent, clutch and a big time match winner down the order for CSK over the years.

It's easy to forget things without the backing of big accumulated stats, but ag his peak Suresh Raina was someone any team in tje world would have loved to have in their team.

As for Kohli & Sharma, they have the numbers because they decided themselves that they are designated stat chasers in their teams, with no worry and pressure of match result. For that very reason, they are not in my Top 10. If Virat Kohli played under Virat Kohli in IPL, he would most likely drop himself for not being a match winner but but Virat Kohli is the boss of RCB literally it seems, he can get away for being mediocre for 11/12 IPLs

Top Indian players overall have always lacked that Alpha male personna in IPL and it's very disappointing.

Dhoni, Pandya have had that Alpha male mentality locked in but their numbers are nowhere near the consistency level of Pollard, Russel etc who have dazzled IPL year on year.

1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
2. Rohit Sharma
3. Virat Kohli
4. Jasprit Bumrah
5. AB de Villiers

Top 5 is filled with Indians only.

Firstly, ABdV isn't India
Secondly, there is no real way that you can say De Villiers, Kohli have performed better than Warner

Kohli did had an impressive season in 2016 where he dominated most teams and his team reached in finals.

If I make an all-time IPL XI, it will be:-

Rohit Sharma (c)
Chris Gayle/David Warner
Virat Kohli
AB de Villiers
Suresh Raina
MS Dhoni(wkt)
Hardik Pandya
Kieran Pollard
Bhuvaneswar Kumar
Lasith Malinga
Jasprit Bumrah

12th man- Shane Watson/Sunil Narine

Preferably, it should be Narine instead of Pollard to balance the lineup but can't drop guys like Pollard, de Villiers or Gayle. They are beyond stats and balance as far as star power is concerned and given their impact in IPL years over years.

Kohli hasn't. ABDV has.

The thread anyways says superstars. ABDV is probably the greatest IPL superstar of all-time among non-Indian players. If AB was sent at 6 in Chinaswamy stadium, the game would have been stopped right there.

ABD isn't ahead of Warner in IPL universe.

Warner is 2 times highest scorer and was vital in Sunrisers IPL success.

ABD has not once taken IPL to finals on his back. He's great with his blitzkreigs every now and then but one such knock is often succeeded by a 2-3 mediocre outings.

Overall, greatest IPL player for me has been Pollard followed by Mallinga and Gayle.

Pollard is Mr. IPL as far as I am concerned.

He single handedly turned Mumbai's fortunes once he joined them way back.

150+ matches for Mumbai and a match winner for th m every year. Not just IPLs, but Pollard is arguably the the real Universe Boss as far as T20s are concerned.

If IPL started a few years earlier, Mallinga would have been the greatest ever.

But ABD is the bigger superstar.

ABD played a critical role for Rcb to make playoffs multiple times.

Even in 2016, after Gayle and Kohli flopped in qualifier, ABD single handedly won that knock out to get them to finals.

He flopped in finals but if not for his heroics the previous game, all those Kohli runs (as important as they are) would have been for naught.

Even in 2020, Rcb is in this position mainly due to one guy... ABD.

Whenever ABD has a bad season, Rcb sinks without a trace.

It's not like there's a huge difference. aBD and Warner are both up there as among the best within the IPL universe. To each their own. For the titles and for being two times runs table topper, I am putting Warner ahead but I won't have throw a hissy fit even if someone puts ABD at the top above even Pollard.

Bowlers will never get the same fame and adulation that batsmen get.

Its always been that way in cricket since its inception.

More so in T20s.

It's true.

But whatever Mallinga has already accomplished in IPL, if you add his prime years of 2005-08 to it, then he's going past Pollard and Gayle easily.

2 more good seasons from Rahul might give him an entry in my Top 10.

Proper match winner this guy.

Yeah performance wise they both are right up there.

I was looking at it more from a performance and aura combo (which is what superstars are about).

If it's pure performance, my list will be different.

Totally agree with you on the impact of Warner, Pollard and Malinga.

Most Man of Match award in IPL history:-

1) AB de Villiers 23
2) Chris Gayle 21
3) Rohit Sharma 18
4) MS Dhoni 17
5) David Warner 17
6) Shane Watson 16
7) Yousuf Pathan 16
8) Suresh Raina 14
9) Virat Kohli 13
10) Gautam Gambhir 13

Pollard- 11
Russell- 11
Narine- 9

Warner just has more runs and being leading run scorer don't count for much in T20s but in terms of strike rate and game changing knock, he is clearly still behind Gayle and de Villiers.

These stats clearly talk about impact a player can have over a game. The only problem with these stats is it show that batsmen often get prioritized while nominating Man of Match award. If I have to put overseas players in different tiers, it will be:-

Tier 1:- Gayle, AB, Pollard, Malinga
Tier 2:- Warner, Watson, Narine, Russell

Then rest. Add Bravo in mix too.

2.Malinga
3.Dhoni
4.Kohli
5.Pollard
6.Raina
7.Sharma

Great stats. Very interesting.

There is impact on a per match basis and impact on a tournament basis.

Warner has been insane in IPL.

In 2016, he carried SRH to the finals and won them the finals too with his batting.

And guess who faced off in that finals?

Rcb with rampaging Gayle, Kohli and ABD.

Some people's impact can't be measured in stats.

Like Dhoni/Raina for CSK

Or Pollard for MI.

ABD himself would gladly give away 10 MOMs for an impact knock in that 2016 finals.

Yusuf Pathan has 16 MOMs but was he impactful if you take a sample set of 10 years?

The best players to ever play the IPL did not play for too long as they were nearing the end of their careers. Warne, Gilly, Jayasuriya etc

The two stand out batting names are
Gayle
AdV

The two standout bowling names are Malinga
Rashid Khan

For all rounders, it’s tough, may be Watson, Pollard and one I am stuck between Narine/Bravo

The two most marketable players outside those names are
MSD
VK

The most successful Captain
Sharma

My all time XII will have these players, but Bravo as 12th man and I’ll take one specialist pacer - May be Styen, didn’t know his economy is so good.

1. Gayle
2. *Sharma
3. VK
4. AdV
5. Watson
6. +MSD
7. Pollard
8. Narine
9. Styen
10. Rashid
11. Malinga
—————
12. Bravo

May be, we can think of dropping Watson
for Warner and push VK, AdV one slot down, but that brings down to 4.5 bowlers only with Pollard to bowl full quota.

In a team which has MSD, Sharma will never be the captain. So it's easy, swap sharma with watson or bring in warner. No risk of changing position of successful players.

Steyn, No man! I feel Bhuvi is a bit underrated here. You look at his IPL record, it's phenomenal. He has done it for SRH years after years. Averages 23 at economy of just over 7.

Also, Raina should be there, he has done it for CSK years after years.

Bhuvi is a fraud like Jordan, Curran etc, no matter what the stats say.

Pollard's countless 10 ball 30s down the order don't end up winning MOTM but they turn the match on the head pretty much always.

Anyone who has followed Mumbai's rise knows the difference Pollard made to them. Pre-Pollard, Mumbai were never a tournament contender.

Pollard shifted IPL's power dynamics single handedly.

I always felt Pollard was the actual captain within Mumbai. He literally controls the troops on field and Mumbai's overall vibe is usually defined by how Pollard is doing.

Warner has been the best pure batsman in IPLs easily. Only reason why I put Gayle ahead is how dominant Gayle was in his prime. Warner is set to surpass him with his consistency.

Yeah, that's what I said about limitation of MOM. If you are an opener or a top order bat, the chances of getting MOM is higher but not so much for middle order batsmen, bowlers or all-rounders.

Pollard is without a doubt IPL legend and hence I put him in Tier-1. He has done it for Mumbai years after years but they also had Rohit(the greatest Indian batsmen in IPL), Malinga earlier and now Bumrah doing it for them, even the addition of Pandya brothers as well. This is what helps you win the tournament, not one-man alone.

The best one-man show that we have ever seen in IPL was Chris Gayle doing it from early 10s till around mid-2010s but was still not enough to win the tournament.

Virat Kohli
David Warner
Chris Gayle
AB De Villiers
Rohit Sharma
MS Dhoni
Kieron Pollard
Lasith Malinga
Sunil Narine
Shane Watson

McCullum for putting it on the map with his century in opening game.
Gayle for being MR. IPL
Raina and Rohit for being best Indians in IPL over the years.
Malinga for being consistently good
Bravo
Pollard
Dhoni for his captaincy and legacy is created in CSK
AbD for being ABD
Watson - He used IPL to become a one of Aussies core players
Warner

Chris Gayle
Kieron Pollard
Bumrah
Y Pathan
H Pandya
KL Rahul
ABV
David Warner
Russell
Dhoni

For some people seeing my list in OP, and Raina as the only Indian there, might be surprised, but he was huge in IPL in his prime.

Pollard has another IPL in the bag. 5 now for him. The guy turned Munbai fortunes around ever since he joined them.

Another solid year for Warner as well.

This year's performance showed us why Warner is below both Gayle and AB in IPL. Warner can have his orange and red cap but in terms of batting impact and star power, he is still below both.

41 year old Gayle averaged 41 at a Strike rate of 139.

37 year old AB averaged 45 at a S/R of 158.

But peak Warner focussed on orange cap and ended with average of 37 at S/R of 134.

As a captain, Warner is great( probably third to Rohit and Dhoni) but as a batsmen and entertainer below several names.

Further, with 6 IPL trophy wins and five of them as captain, Rohit Sharma has stamped his authority as the greatest IPL batsmen, captain and superstar of this tournament. This year his presence alone was enough to deliver them a trophy.

In Warner’s defence, he was an impact player for SRH in 2016 wining IPL, which AB and Gayle are yet to win IPL for their teams.

Chris Gayle got past 350 sixes in his IPL career yesterday.

Most sixes in IPL history:-

Gayle 351
ABD 237
Dhoni 216
Rohit 214
Kohli 201

Sohail Tanvir.
1 tournament= leading wicket taker, took his team to the final and won. Then retired from IPL realising it was too easy for him :smith

Messi and ronaldo havemt won a world cup yet
Giroud has won a world cup

Does that mean giroud is better than messi and ronaldo ?

Pollard and ABD are greatest IPL superstars.

Warner has been sacked from captaincy and might get dropped too. A great IPL player but not a superstar because superstars don't get sacked.

Gayle hasn't produced the same level of consistency in IPL post 2013.

Among Indian players, I would say, KL Rahul.

Today harshal Patel has purple cap does that mean he is better than rabada, Cummins,Boult? In T20 anyone can become highest wicket taker.some are genuinely good bowler but some gets wickets only due to bowling in death over or due to swinging condition for exp Deepak chahar record of best figure in an international t20.does that mean he is best bowler in t20?

To be fair to Tanvir though he bowled exceptionally well in that tournament, well above his peers, not due to death bowling or taking advantage of seaming conditions and what not and was AT the time one of the best T20 seamers around in international cricket too. He bowled at an average of 12 which no purple cap has beaten even up to this date I think
