How come you don't rate R Sharma who Indians hype to be as ' the most elegant batsman of this era' which is laughable really.

I find Joe Root, Shai Hope, Babar Azam , Haris Sohail, Umar Amin, James Vince, Mendis ans Rahul to be extremely pleasing to the eye.

Outside Asia:

1) Virat Kohli
2) Babar Azam
3) Fakhar Zaman
4) Shikhar Dhawan
5) Tamim Iqbal

So Babar Azam with 1 hundred in Australia and a mediocre Champions Trophy in England is the second best Asian batsman outside Asia for you.

However, Rohit Sharma with 4 hundreds in Australia (including a 170) and two excellent Champions Trophies in England doesn't even make your top 5.

Hats off to your impartiality. Clearly there is no element of bias in your assessment.

Rohit has been an elite ODI batsman ever since he started to open around 2013. He has been fantastic in the last 4 years and is undoubtedly the most elegant batsman in Asia.

Rohit is a laughing stock against the moving ball and that is proven. Been exposed by amir and steyn ( so many more) when the ball wobbles a bit. You can tell by how comfortable they look against the new ball. He even once said to Steyn come to India and we will see :yk

Also find it really surprising you rate Mushfiq higher than Tamim, Malik and Mathews

A laughing stock doesn't score 4 hundreds in Australia including a 150+, and neither does a laughing stock perform well in back to back Champions Trophies.

Rohit has a weakness against the incoming delivery and the likes of Amir have exploited that, but that doesn't make him a hack or an average player. All batsmen have some weaknesses, but Rohit is in own right is a world class ODI opener who could go down as an ODI legend by the time he retires.

He walks into every ODI team in the world barring South Africa, who have the best ODI opening pair in the world. However, I would personally prefer him to Amla. In my view, he is the third best ODI opener in the world after Warner and QdK.

Mushfiq has been brilliant in the last three years. He plays spin as well as Malik, but is much better against pace. He just edges out him, Tamim and Mathews who is a top player but hasn't done much for quite a while.

If a Pakistani opener in ODIs were to score two double-hundreds including a 260, four-five 150+ scores, a couple of 140+ scores and a 170 in Australia and with his best years still ahead of him, he would be dubbed as as messiah and the greatest ODI opener of all time.

However, since he is Indian, he is a 'laughing stock' because he has issues with in-swingers.

I think it has reached a point where it is not even funny anymore. It is just depressing.

Mine would be similar but would swap Rohit and Dhawan.Rohit is more dangerous but Dhawan deserves to be rated higher.

It is a tough call between the two, but I went with Rohit because he can reach a level no other batsmen in ODIs can. However, Dhawan is a very clutch performer.

Kohli
Rohit( ridiculously underrated in this forum)
Babar
Dhawan
Tamim

Not taking anything away from Rohit's reportoire, but I would rate KL Rahul a notch higher than Rohit. Sadly Indian management is not giving him consistant chances. Rahul has better technique with moving ball and has the same ability as Rohit in switching gears considering match situation. In fact he has the ability to hit right from the first ball and doesn't need much time to settle. I only wish he gets more chances like Rohit and persist with him. Rahul is such a delight to watch when he's on full swing. Too bad that Indian opening pair is too strong to accomodate space for a stellar performer like Rahul.

I am a bit surprised by Rohit's stats. Too a quick look. Outside Asia he has averaged 60+ with SR of 88 in the last 4 years. I knew that he did fine, but he has done more than fine.

1. Virat Kohli
2. Babar Azam
3. Rohit Sharma
4. Shikar Dhawan/ Tamim Iqbal
5. Shoaib Malik/ Shakib-ul-Hasan

Ehhhhhhhhhhh
5) Sharjeel Khan

Virat Kohli
Rohit Sharma
Babar Azam
Shikhar Dhawan
Shoaib Malik

So most Pakistanis would naturally underrate him.

Performed against most other teams. His average outside Asia in the last 4 years is over 60 as Buffet mentioned. If a Pakistan player had that record ,PP would explode.

I know. He’s a run machine who is better than Kohli on his day.

Kohli
Dhawan
Rohit
Mushfiqur
Babar Azam

Mushfiqur is world class. Has the best technique of the lot. The thing that lets him down is that he can be stupid, and play a rash shot. Personally, he should give up the gloves and bat at 4 otherwise he could've been #2 behind Kohli, but Kohli is miles ahead of everyone else.

Since 2015 against Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, India and Pakistan

He's better than at Kohli at accelerating. Has a gear which not many batters have in today's game. But overall,Kohli is the superior batter.

Yes, at his best he can be better than Kohli in terms of destructiveness.

Kohli to me is less talented than Rohit. But he is not lazy like Rohit.

Rohit is too causal most of the times and very vilnerable to the incoming delivery from left arm pacers in the first 3 or 4 overs.

Amir has exposed Rohit a couple of times and in the recent NZ ODI series, Boult also exposed Rohit for his lack of foot movement in the first 3 overs and cleaned him up.

Rohit is pretty good against right arm pacers most of the times and average against left arm pacers.

Well summed up. Another weakness is that he plays too many dots balls early in his innings, I know he can make up for this but for some people it comes across as selfish batting. Also his fellow openers like Warner and De Kock are able to rotate strike and hit boundaries.

I don't think Rohit playing dot balls is selfish, but I have seen on other forums and even here on PP people call him selfish for the amount of dot balls he plays early in his innings.

Rohit definitely should be at 2. It is tight between him and Dhawan (since Dhawan has always performed in big tournaments) but overall Rohit has played some astonishing innings.
Babar at 4. He has made an incredible start to his career but still needs to perform outside UAE to be top contender. Next year this time he might very well be!

I won't mind picking rohit over Dhawan atm as Rohit's been great since 2015WC.But overall Dhawan has performed better than Rohit and i'm not just saying this because of dhawan's icc tournament performances.

Another problem for Musfiqe is he started very badly in his international career even by BD standards. Thus despite averaging over 50 for past few years his overall stats doesn't look very impressive.

The top two is pretty much set in stone: Virat Kohli and Babar Azam. After them, I would pick Dhawan, his performances in ODI tournaments are fantastic. Rohit Sharma, despite being a massive FTB is fourth. Lastly, I'll pick Tamim for playing some great innings against the big teams.

1) Virat Kohli
2) Babar Azam
3) Shikar Dhawan
4) Rohit Sharma
5) Tamim Iqbal

Shoaib Malik deserves a special mention for being the only world class middle or lower-middle order batsman from Asia.

Is Angelo Mathews not a world class middle order batsman from Asia? Also Indians will be pretty riled up at the fact u exclude Jacques Hardik Kallis Pandya from being a world class 'lower order batsman' :yk

No one will be riled by someone who thinks that Babar being the second best ODI batsman from Asia is set in stone. Hard to take someone seriously after that.

It is true. He is 23 yrs of age and has a higher ceiling than Sharma, Dhawan and Tamim etc. There is a reason he is ranked 4th in the world only behind Kohli, Abd and Warner. Mark my words at the end of his career he will have 25-35 odi hundreds IA.

Not taking anything away from Babar, but he was an utter failure in CT. Let's talk more about his higher ceiling once he starts making runs outside UAE against Top teams.

Matthews hasn't really done much of note recently. If he has, I haven't been watching and I doubt anyone else has either. Pandya is a nothing player right now.

Not only does he have a higher ceiling than those guys but on current form, he's easily better than them all. Babar is much better than Kohli was at a similar stage in his development and unless something unforeseen happens, Babar should end his career as the better batsman too.

He averaged 44 and turned up when it mattered in the semi and final of the tournament with 38* and a very well paced 46 (Higher than any score from kohli in an odi final)

Mamoon and waleed88 will have something to say about that :yk

But on a serious note Babar has to start performing in tests to even think of ending up having a better career.

What current form? Dhawan, Rohit and Tamim finished the champion's trophy as the top 3 run scorers. Babar was nowhere to be found with his 133 runs in 5 innings.

Runs outside UAE?

His ODI averages in each country:

UAE : 86
NZ: 72
AUS: 56
WI: 77
ENG: 32
IRELAND : 29 (1 game)
SL : 18 ( 2 games)

So every where he has a reasonable sample size he had done exceedingly well apart from England.

Based on current form, not based on the last ICC tournament. Even then, he scored more runs in the final of the CT than Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli combined.

He will. He's only 23. What did Kohli accomplish in tests before his 24th birthday?

I am a huge fan of Babar but how can you say with such assurity that he will score in tests.

He just doesn't give a comfortable vibe at the crease in tests and looks nervy and tentative unlike LOI's. It is almost as if he changes his mindset for the format and is pre planned.

Unlike Waleed, I rate Babar very highly. I have stated numerous times that he is the best batting talent we have produced in over a decade. However, I don't think he is beyond criticism.

The problem with Pakistani fans is that whenever they get a very good young player, they protect him from criticism as if he is some divine figure. We saw that with Amir and now we are seeing that with Babar, and even constructive criticism becomes branded as blind hate.

Our fans need to grow a thicker skin.

Scoring runs outside Asia is no big deal anymore for Asian batsmen in ODIs. England, Australia, and SA have the flattest of wickets. Sanga scored like 3 consecutive 100s in Australia, something which was unthinkable for an Asian batsman a decade ago.

Kohli debuted in 2012 Perth in test ,scores a a valiant 75 and 100 on greentop.
