TTP ends ‘indefinite ceasefire’ with Pakistan - new wave of terrorist activity begins

The question is why are terrorist activities still occurring in our country despite the successful Operation Zarb-e-Azb?
A child died while another sustained injuries when a bomb exploded in Balochistan’s Machh, as confirmed by local authorities.

The explosion occurred in close proximity to the Machh police station, in Machh bazar, as per information provided by police sources.

Remarkably, despite the severity of the blast, no harm befell the policemen stationed nearby. However, the repercussions were dire for two innocent children caught in the attack.

Tragically, one of the children succumbed to the injuries while being transported to the hospital. The second child was promptly admitted for medical treatment.

In response to the incident, law enforcement swiftly took action, with both police and levies personnel converging on the scene to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

As a consequence of the blast, a wave of fear and uncertainty swept through Machh bazar. Shopkeepers reacted by swiftly closing their shutters in an effort to safeguard themselves and their businesses from any potential fallout.

Balochistan has been marred with militancy for decades. However, the security forces have managed to bring a sense of normality to the province in recent years.

In 2023, a total of 15,063 intelligence-based operations were executed in Balochistan, resulting in the killing of 109 terrorists.

==================================

I strongly condemn the tragic incident in Machh, Balochistan. It's a black day when innocent children fall victim to such senseless violence. We stand united against these acts of terror, hoping for peace and safety for everyone in our beloved country.

Six barbers shot dead in North Waziristan

In a shocking incident on Tuesday, six barbers hailing from Punjab were brutally murdered in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan, according to official sources.

The bodies of the six men were discovered in the village of Muski, located in Mir Ali. Preliminary investigation suggests that the victims, all of whom were originally from Punjab, were shot dead.

The slain individuals were all barbers, having recently migrated to North Waziristan to pursue their trade. Sources reveal that the victims operated barber shops in Mir Ali Bazaar.

The bodies have been transferred to Mir Ali Hospital for further examination, and the police have initiated investigations after collecting evidence from the crime scene.

The motive behind the brutal act remain unclear.

On December 22, five labourers were killed and a watchman was injured by unidentified gunmen while they were sleeping in South Waziristan’s Wana.

According to the locals of the area, the victims were constructing a police station. At night when they were asleep in their tent, unidentified gunmen shot them dead and fled.

Among the dead, three labourers belonged to the Burki tribe of Shikai and two to the Wazir tribe of Suparkai. The bodies were shifted to the hospital for post-mortem.

At least two terrorists were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Tank district of Khyber-Pakthunkhwa, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Friday.

The military's media wing said the IBO was launched after reports of terrorist presence in the area and an intense exchange of fire took place.

One of the terrorists killed was identified as Gul Yousaf aka Toor, a high-value target.

"Terrorist Gul Yousaf remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces including high profile terrorist attacks in Tank and DI Khan districts as well as extortion and target killing of innocent civilians."

The killed terrorist had a bounty of Rs2.5 million for his capture.

"Local populace appreciated the efforts of the security forces in maintaining peace and stability in the area," said the ISPR.

"Security forces of Pakistan, in step with the nation, remain determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country.."

Earlier this week, security forces killed four terrorists including a suicide bomber during an IBO in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa North Waziristan district, the military said.

According to the military’s media wing, the operation was conducted on the reported presence of terrorists, adding that they remained involved in numerous terrorist activities against the security forces.

ISPR said that the terrorists were planning to conduct a high-profile terrorist attack, which was averted due to a proactive response by the security forces.

Arms, ammunition and explosives were also recovered from killed terrorists, it added.

A bomb blast in northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border killed five police on polio vaccination guard duty and wounded more than 20 on Monday, the latest in a series of attacks by Islamist militants ahead of the Feb. 8 national elections.

The Pakistan Taliban, an umbrella group of militants also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility in a statement sent to Reuters.

The blast hit a truck full of police on their way to guard a polio vaccination drive in the Bajur tribal district, police official Kashif Zulfikar said.

Islamist militants in Pakistan often target polio vaccination teams, believing the immunisation effort is a Western tool to spy on them and make Muslims infertile.

The TTP has been waging a war against the state for years, seeking to overthrow the government and replace it with a harsh brand of Islamic rule.

The militants have ramped up their attacks since they revoked a ceasefire with the government last year.

Political analysts have voiced concern, with some politicians calling for a delay in the elections in the northwest.

A six-man suicide squad drove an explosive-laden truck into a military camp in northwest Pakistan last month, killing at least 23 soldiers, the heaviest death toll in a single attack in years.

Soldier martyred in exchange of fire with terrorists in North Waziristan

A soldier of the Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom on Monday during an exchange of fire with terrorists in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district, the military said in a statement.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistani troops effectively engaged terrorists' location and apprehended an injured terrorist.

It said that a resident of district Mardan 41-year-old Havildar Muhammad Zahir, having fought gallantly, embraced martyrdom, during the intense exchange of fire with the terrorists.

ISPR said that the sanitisation operation is being carried out to eliminate any terrorists found in the area.

“Security Forces of Pakistan are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” it further said.

As per the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), 560 acts of terrorism were reported in the tribal areas of K-P in 2023.

Data obtained from the CTD showed that there have been 209 attacks on security personnel in 2023 compared to 124 in 2022; 243 attacks on police compared to 118 in 2022; 167 policemen and officers have attained martyrdom in terrorist attacks in 2023, compared to 83 in 2022; and 101 soldiers and officers have attained martyrdom last year, compared to 96 in the year before last.

3 cops among 4 dead in late-night attack on police checkpost in Kohat

Three policemen were martyred while a citizen was killed in a late-night attack on Wednesday on a police checkpost near Lachi Toll Plaza on the Indus Highway in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district, officials said.

According to a statement released by Lachi Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Fazl Naeem, the martyred cops included Lance Naik Constable Amjad, Lance Naik Constable Junaid and Constable Waqar.

A resident of Lakki Marwat, Noor Muhammad, was killed as well, Naeem added. Kohat District Police Officer Farhan Khan also confirmed the number of casualties to Dawn.com.

PRO Naeem said that a heavy contingent of police reached the site of the incident upon receiving an alert. The area has been cordoned off and a search operation was under way to locate the miscreants, he said.

The incident comes just two days after a vehicle carrying police personnel on polio duty came under attack in KP’s Mamond tehsil. Seven policemen were martyred in the incident.

The same day, a soldier lost his life while an injured militant was arrested following an exchange of fire between security forces and militants in North Waziristan.

The Foreign Office (FO) stated on Monday that Pakistan was "not interested" in holding a dialogue with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

In a weekly media briefing, FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, clarifying Pakistan’s stance, stated that the TTP has accepted responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks in the country. “Our demand from the Afghan government is that they take action against the terrorists,” she said.

The spokesperson added that the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s visit to Afghanistan was neither on behalf of the Government of Pakistan nor the FO.

“The Foreign Office had given a briefing to Maulana Fazlur Rehman before his visit. He has gone on his own his own volition,” the spokesperson added, reiterating that the party leader was not visiting Kabul as a representative of Pakistan.

The FO's statement comes just as the JUI-F chief 'pledged' to revive talks between Pakistan and the TTP.

A day earlier, Maulana Fazl met with Afghanistan’s supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada in Kabul wherein it was assured that the next elections in Pakistan would be held peacefully and efforts would be made for the resumption of Islamabad’s talks with the banned TTP.

The Afghan government also demanded that Islamabad play its role in the elimination of Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) as well as chalk out a visa-free policy on the Chaman border alongside a soft plan on the expulsion of its refugees.

Kandahar Governor Mullah Shirin Akhund had promised a meeting of Haibatullah with the JUI-F chief on his visit to Kabul, but declined a huddle with other delegates.

Fazl and Haibatullah discussed the TTP, ISKP, border management, soft visa policy, and refugees during their one-on-one meeting.

The JUI-F chief promised that he would take up the issues of Kabul with the relevant quarters in Islamabad, but pressed the sureties of a ceasefire till peaceful elections in Pakistan, a source said.

2 terrorists killed in North Waziristan intelligence-based operation: ISPR

Security forces killed two terrorists in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district on Friday, according to the military’s media wing.

A press release from the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the IBO was conducted based on the reported presence of terrorists in the area.

“During the conduct of operation, after an intense fire exchange, two terrorists; Abdullah Khadri and Khalid Janan, were sent to hell. The killed terrorists remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities in the area, including target killing of innocent civilians,” the ISPR said.

It added that a sanitisation operation was under way to eliminate any other terrorist found in the area as “the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country.”

Two soldiers were martyred in an exchange of fire with terrorists in KP’s Lakki Marwat district on Wednesday. Two militants were also killed in the engagement.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities in the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan after the banned militant Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

According to an annual security report issued by the Centre for Research and Security Studies, Pakistan witnessed 1,524 violence-related fatalities and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations in 2023 — marking a record six-year high.

KP and Balochistan were the primary centres of violence, accounting for over 90 per cent of all fatalities and 84pc of attacks, including incidents of terrorism and security forces operations.

‘TTP man involved in Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine attack’ held

KARACHI: Law enforcers on Saturday claimed to have arrested a suspected militant, said to be associated with the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in an intelligence-based raid in Ittehad Town.

They said that Abdul Ghaffar alias Amjad was also involved in a suicide attack at the Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Clifton in 2011.

A spokesperson for the Rangers said in a statement that the held suspect was a close aide of a TTP commander Mohammed Ali alias Mufti Khalid. He said that explosive material was recovered from the suspect’s custody.

The suspect recently arrived in Karachi to re-organise his network, the spokesperson added.

The Rangers said that the suspect along with his close aides, Mohammed Ali alias Mufti Khalid and Daud alias Waleed, had planned suicide bombings at the mausoleum of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in Oct 2011.

Ghaffar revealed that to achieve his purpose, he had brought five suicide bombers — Abu Salih and his wife belonging to Chechnya, Daud alias Hasan from Azerbaijan, Shoaib from Karachi and Atteq hailing from Waziristan, the statement said.

During questioning, the suspect ‘confessed’ that on the day of incident, he along with his accomplices was going towards the mausoleum when some policemen indicated them to stop. However, they did not stop and an exchange of firing between the two sides took place, during which his accomplices exploded their suicide jackets.

Security forces across major cities in Pakistan have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports of potential terrorist activities orchestrated by banned groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Secret agencies have issued a warning about the imminent arrival of 17 suicide bombers in the country, prompting authorities to tighten security measures nationwide.

Over 17 terrorists from four different groups have been tasked with carrying out attacks in key cities. Police and law enforcement agencies have been directed to enhance security measures in response to the looming threat.

In a communication titled "Special and Specific Information Report regarding Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Mianwali, DG Khan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan", RPO Rawalpindi Additional IG Syed Khurram Ali instructed CPO Rawalpindi Khalid Hamdani, and district police chiefs to bolster security in their respective regions.

According to the report, TTP's top leadership conducted a meeting in Kabul, outlining plans for terrorist activities in Pakistan in January. The targeted areas include newly-merged tribal districts, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, DI Khan, Tank, Quetta, Chaman, Pishin, and other regions. The TTP allegedly secured funds from Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan, and approximately 15 suicide bombers are reportedly at their disposal for carrying out attacks.

One group, led by Commander Salman alias Siddique, has been dispatched with night vision glasses, hand grenades, and rocket launchers, hiding in Zangli, Badaber area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Facilitators of this group are reportedly in Matni and Azakhel areas of the province.

Another group is said to be present in Peshawar's Hassan Khel area, with potential plans to conduct attacks in Mianwali and Attock districts of Punjab, DG Khan and border areas of Peshawar and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The Dawood Batani group, affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, is reportedly active in DI Khan, planning to target law enforcement agencies and their officers in the border districts of Punjab. Two commanders, Mashal and Ahmed Baloch, have been assigned and activated for this purpose.

Additionally, a separate intelligence report suggests that Baloch sub-nationalists are planning to target the local community, police, and law enforcement agencies in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. A meeting of the Baloch sub-nationalists took place in Afghanistan, where five fighters were allegedly assigned specific targets.

There are also reports of a propaganda campaign against state institutions by Baloch sub-nationalists with the alleged support of intelligence agencies from enemy countries, particularly India's RAW (Research and Analysis Wing).

RPO Rawalpindi Additional IG Syed Khurram Ali has instructed CPO Rawalpindi Syed Khalid Hamdani along with DPOs Attock, Chakwal, and Jhelum to implement foolproof security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents.

Security measures have been heightened not only at important and sensitive installations but also at the entrance and exit points of cities and districts throughout the division, including Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Police effectively thwarted a terrorist infiltration attempt in the provincial border area of Dera Ghazi Khan on Wednesday. Inspector General (IG) Punjab Usman Anwar revealed that the terrorists aimed to target a check post but were prevented by alert law enforcement personnel.

IG Anwar emphasised the pivotal role played by thermal imaging technology in tracking the movements of the terrorists. In a video message, he highlighted how the police swiftly identified and monitored the infiltrators, enabling them to take prompt and decisive action against the looming threat, as reported by private news channels.

Law enforcement forces from Punjab engaged the terrorists with intense firing, compelling them to retreat and ultimately preventing the attack on the check post.

UN report claims TTP established new base in K-P in 2023

The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) established a new base in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in mid-2023, revealed a new report by a UN monitory team, which sheds light on close ties between not only TTP and the Afghan Taliban but also between the anti-Pakistani groups and al-Qaeda.

The 33rd report compiled by the UN monitoring team was submitted to the UN Security Council last week providing details about the presence of terrorist organisations in Afghanistan and their linkage with the Kabul regime.

“A new TTP base was established in mid-2023 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, where 66 TTP individuals trained as suicide bombers,” read the 23-page report.

It was important to highlight that the new base was established merely months after Pakistan allowed hundreds of TTP terrorists to return as part of the confidence-building measure.

It was evident that the returning TTP terrorists, instead of laying down arms, regrouped and posed a greater threat to Pakistan’s security. The increased TTP attacks prompted authorities to withdraw from the peace efforts brokered by the Afghan Taliban.

10 personnel martyred as militants storm D.I. Khan police station

At least 10 police officials were martyred and six others injured in a pre-dawn attack on Monday by dozens of militants on a police station in Dera Ismail Khan, as violence escalated ahead of general elections this week.

A spokesperson for Dera police said that militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, attacked the Chaudhwan Police Station in Daraban tehsil at around 3am, adding that cops inside the building retaliated and a gun battle continued for around two and a half hours. The militants escaped after the attack under the cover of darkness.

Senior police officials, however, did not share details of the preliminary investigation into the assault, which came just three days ahead of the general election, scheduled for Feb 8 (Thursday).

“More than 30 terrorists launched an attack from three directions. There was an exchange of fire for over two and a half hours,” KP police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan told the AFP news agency. He disclosed that the attackers briefly seized control of the police station.

Malik Aneesul Hassan, the deputy superintendent of police in Daraban, told Reuters that after entering the building, the militants “used hand grenades, which caused more casualties to the police”.

Officials said the injured cops were immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Teaching Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan, where the funeral of the martyred was held at the police lines.

Caretaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Syed Arshad Hussain Shah, Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry and the KP police chief, among others, attended the funeral prayers.

Speaking on this occasion, the police chief paid rich tribute to the martyred cops for fighting bravely against the militants, adding that their sacrifices for the sake of the country’s stability and the safety of people would not go in vain.

In a video recorded after the funeral, which also went viral on social media, relatives of the martyred police officials questioned the caretaker chief minister and the police chief as to where the militants came from.

“Where did they come from? Did they land from the sky? Who gave them passage — did I?” a person asked. “We are being told that we are doing politics [over the bodies],” he said in the video.

On Dec 12, 2023, at least 23 Pakistan Army soldiers were martyred and more than 30 troops wounded after militants belonging to the Tehreek-i-Jihad Pakistan stormed a Draband Police Station — a facility that also falls in the same area.

A statement issued by the military’s media wing said that six militants who stormed the building were killed. Separately, two military operations in Darazinda and Kolachi resulted in the death of 21 militants and claimed the lives of two soldiers.

Constable martyred

Meanwhile, a police constable identified as Sabz-i-Ali embraced martyrdom while another cop, Ajmal, sustained serious injuries when an explosive device went off at Zulam on Timergara Peshawar road here on Monday.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, the bomb disposal unit was trying to defuse the device on the bank of the Panjkora river at Zulam when it went off. The body of the martyred constable was shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Timergara. The injured cop was later shifted to the provincial capital.

Moreover, two civilians sustained injuries in a roadside explosion on Monday in Wana bazaar in the Lower South Waziristan district, police said.

The ISPR said the operation was conducted on information about the presence of militants between the night of April 5 and 6.

It identified the militants as Asad and Hasrat, adding that a cache of arms, ammunition and explosives was also recovered.

Levies man martyred

Treat TTP threat same as Daesh, Pakistan tells world

Pakistan has been telling the international interlocutors that there is no distinction between the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Daesh in an effort to galvanise support for exerting pressure on the Afghan Taliban government.

Many countries in the region and beyond consider Daesh as an immediate threat while they view the TTP as Pakistan’s problem.

This view held by certain countries is making it difficult for Pakistan to garner the kind of support it needed against the TTP.

Against the backdrop of ongoing surge in terrorist attacks in Pakistan, authorities are briefing key Afghan stakeholders about the TTP posing a threat to their interests.

One of the arguments Pakistan is making with those countries is that both the TTP and Daesh are the same. “They are working in tandem. Don’t draw a distinction between the two,” said a source familiar with backdoor efforts to garner support against the Taliban regime.

A diplomatic source also confirmed to The Express Tribune that they were recently briefed by Pakistani officials about the likely nexus between TTP and Daesh.

The purpose behind Pakistan’s latest push is to make the international community realise that TTP is as dangerous as Daesh.

Pakistan is hoping that the international community would not turn a blind eye towards the activities of the TTP.

According to sources, Pakistan wants the international players to treat the TTP threat the same way as they are in the case of Daesh.

Daesh took responsibility for major terrorist attacks not just in Pakistan, but in Iran and now in Russia. There are fears that Daesh could replicate Moscow style attacks in other countries. The US intelligence agencies, according to American media reports, warned of a potential Daesh attack in the US.

Many countries were briefed by Pakistan about the close working relationship between the TTP and Daesh. The terrorist outfit first emerged on the scene in Afghanistan in 2015. Daesh’s Afghan chapter was set up mostly by terrorists who were previously part of the TTP and its affiliates.

With these latest diplomatic maneuvers, Pakistan is trying to remind the international community that Afghanistan is once again becoming a “hub of terrorists”.

Pakistan’s efforts met some success at the recent meeting of National Security Advisers from Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries. The meeting was hosted by Kazakhstan, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the 9-member security bloc. China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, India and certain Central Asian states are part of the regional grouping.

The SCO in its joint statement expressed concerns over the presence of international terrorist outfits and their leaders in Afghanistan. It asked the Afghan Taliban government to fulfill the promises made with the international community.

One killed, 20 injured in twin blasts in Duki

One person was killed, and 20 others injured, including two officials of Balochistan police’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), in two explosions that took place in the coal field area of Duki district in northern Balochistan on Thursday.

Officials said that the explosions, in which improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were used, took place with an interval when people and police officials gathered at the site of the first blast.

In the first blast, a truck loaded with coal was targeted while carrying coal to Punjab.

“An IED exploded close to the truck, injuring three people,” officials said, adding that the truck was damaged.

The second blast took place at the site of the first explosion when security personnel reached after the blast, resulting in the killing of one person and injuring 15 more people.

“In the twin explosions, one person lost his life on the spot, while 20 others were injured,” a senior police officer Jalil Marri told Dawn, adding that the injured include two CTD officials who went to the site for investigation.

A heavy contingent of police and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and shifted the body and injured to district hospitals in Duki and Loralai.

The provincial health secretary, Abdullah Khan Nourzai, imposed an emergency in the civil hospitals of Quetta and Loralai after the blast.

Later, the seriously injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital in Quetta.

Initial investigations revealed that both blasts were conducted with remote controls.

The young boy who lost his life in the blast was identified as 15-year-old Jahangir Nasar.

The injured officials of CTD were identified as sub-inspector Mohammad Rahim and Shafa Mohammad.

Other injured individuals include Abdul Rehman, Mohammad Qasim, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Asif, Naik Dad, Murad Mohammad Kamran, Naseebullah, Abdul Wadood, Mohammad Tariq, Hakimullah, Shah Wali, Roozudin, Najeebullah, Asmatullah and Muhammad Sadiq.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Home Minister Mir Ziaullah Langove, provincial ministers Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, Mir Ali Madad Jattak, and senior central vice president of PML-N Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasar, strongly condemned the IED explosions in Duki, stating that those responsible would be brought to justice soon.

Two police officers injured

In a separate incident, a deputy superintendent of police and another officer were injured in an armed attack on their vehicle in the Pishin district late on Thursday night.

Officials said that DSP Ainuddin Kakar and Station House Officer Rozi Khan Kakar of Pishin police station were targeted by unknown armed men in Killi Tarkha, a locality on the outskirts of Pishin town while they were on patrol in the area.

“Armed men opened fire on their vehicle, resulting in serious injuries,” a senior police officer said, adding that police immediately rushed to the site and shifted the injured police officers to Pishin hospital.

However, they were later shifted to the trauma centre at the Civil Hospital Quetta. Rozi Khan’s condition is stated to be serious.

Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the terrorists.

Police premises’ security beefed up after terrorism threat

The provincial capital police have heightened the security level in the city following a terrorism threat to the headquarters of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), four police stations and police units in Lahore.

The threat was issued by the Khurasani group of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), after which the police high-ups held a meeting to devise a strategy to counter any possible terror activity in the city.

“It has been learnt reliably that the defunct TTP (Khurasani network), operating under its commander, Ali Zar, has planned terrorist activities to target the police units in Lahore,” reads the special information report of the Punjab Police.

The police stations the terrorist group allegedly intends to target include Mozang, Badami Bagh, Racecourse and Batapur.

Similarly, the Liberty Market Facilitation Centre, the CIA Kotwali and the CIA headquarters are also among the targets of the terrorist organisation, according to the police report.

It says that motive of the TTP’s Khorasani network may be to avenge the recent killing of a terrorist, Faizan Butt. He was killed in a police encounter after his arrest in the DHA, Lahore. Faizan had allegedly killed some policemen in the provincial capital.

“The reconnaissance of the aforementioned establishments has already been carried out for the execution of the said terrorist activities,” reads the police report.

Lahore Operations DIG Faisal Kamran tells Dawn the police high-ups are taking the threat by Khurasani network seriously.

“We have heightened vigilance by taking necessary precautionary measures, and by sensitising the concerned quarters,” he says, adding that more police personnel have been deputed in and outside the CIA headquarters, the police stations and other buildings.

The DIG says that massive and frequent combing operations have been launched with the help of the LEAs and the sister intelligence agencies in the vicinity of the police buildings which could be targeted by the terrorist outfit.

He adds that patrolling by Dolphin Squad and other police units has also been intensified, besides issuing revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) to check the entry of visitors and police personnel to the above-mentioned police buildings.

“We have also alerted the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), besides taking on board the Special Branch of the Punjab Police,” Mr Kamran says.

The arrested commander was involved in various terrorist activities in different areas, while further investigations are in the process.

With the success of the intelligence operation, the collusion of various terrorist groups within the country is expected to be uncovered soon, the report said.

TTP ringleader killed in Afghanistan

The slain terrorist Abdul Manan alias Hakeemullah fatally shot in the Chaghasarai area of Asadabad district in Kunar province.

Hakeemullah was formerly associated with the TTP Malakand Shura and served as an aide to Wali, overseeing terrorist activities in Bajaur and carrying out various acts of violence including target killings, landmine explosions, checkpoint attacks, and extortion.

His death is seen as a significant setback for the TTP and underscores the internal conflicts among various armed factions operating within Afghanistan.

On April 27, TTP Malakand chapter commander Talha Swati was killed in the Asadabad area of Afghanistan's Kunar province, sources confirmed.

Swati – associated with the Fazlullah group belonged to Swat. He was gunned down in broad daylight after Friday prayers.
The TTP commander was linked to the intelligence group and worked as intelligence chief in the Barikot area.

As per reports, the slain terrorist was reporting on Jammatul Ahrar's activities to the South District Taliban, Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), and his close aide Noor Wali Mehsud.

There were conflicting reports surrounding the commander's death. Some reports suggested he was killed by ISKP, while others stated he was killed by a rival faction due to some internal rifts.

The Swati group, following the commander's death, demanded punishment for the killers.

"Concerted campaign" needed to recover weapons from terrorist groups like TTP, Pakistan tells UN

Pakistan's Ambassador Munir Akram has called for a "concerted campaign" to recover weapons from terrorist groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) at the 4th UN Conference to review the implementation of the UN Programme of Action (UNPoA) on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW).

He stated that TTP have been using safe havens in Afghanistan to launch deadly cross-border attacks into Pakistan.

"Pakistan is particularly concerned about the acquisition and use of modern, sophisticated small arms by terrorist groups such as TTP—a UN-listed terrorist organization," stated Pakistan's envoy.

The 2001 UNPoA, backed by all member states, provides a framework to counter the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.

Since then, the UN has supported its implementation at national, regional, and international levels.

"Terrorists and criminals do not manufacture these arms," the Pakistani envoy told delegates, emphasising they acquire them from illicit arms markets or receive them from entities aiming to destabilise a region or country.

"It is essential to investigate how terrorist groups and criminal organizations acquire such sophisticated weapons," Akram said. "All States and the UN must take measures to prevent the illicit trade, transfer, and diversion of these arms."

He highlighted that the illicit proliferation, excessive accumulation, and misuse of small arms exacerbate conflicts, fuel terrorism, threaten peace and security, and undermine sustainable development.

This results in hundreds of thousands of lives lost annually, immense suffering for civilians, and devastated economies and societies.

"The evolving nature of conflicts and the advent of new technologies pose new challenges to combat the proliferation of increasingly lethal small arms—UAVs and drones," Akram added.

He noted that the UNPoA and the International Tracing Instrument (ITI) represent an enduring international consensus and agreed framework to address challenges related to the unauthorised, illicit trade and trafficking of these arms.

The current review conference offers an important opportunity to assess progress, identify challenges, and chart the way forward.

Pakistan has strengthened its legislative frameworks, enhanced transfer controls, and implemented robust measures to prevent the diversion of SALW to unauthorised users.

However, Akram argued that a supply-side approach alone is insufficient to tackle the challenges posed by SALW.

"To reduce demand, more strenuous efforts and resources are required to resolve conflicts, end terrorist activities, and eliminate organised crime."

International assistance and cooperation to build national capacities in tracking and interdiction will be central to implementing the UNPoA, he said.

Izumi Nakamitsu, head of the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), delivered remarks on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who noted that the review conference comes at a challenging time with rising global military expenditures.

He emphasised that there is nothing "small" or "light" about the damage these weapons cause.

Khyber police on high alert after TTP threat

Police were placed on high alert throughout the Khyber district while additional checkposts were established on different routes after receipt of secret information about possible attacks from the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan on different police stations.

Sources in Tirah said TTP had prepared at least three teams each comprising 10 fighters under the collective command of commander Abuzar with two groups assigned the task of carrying out attacks in parts of Tirah, while the third was dispatched to Bara for possible attacks on Meelwat and Bara police stations.

It was also learnt that TTP commander for Akkakhel area in Tirah issued a warning to local shepherds to desist from bringing their cattle for grazing in the hills as they suspected some shepherds were allegedly spying on them for security forces and passing information about their secret movements.

The TTP affiliates, sources in the region said had conveyed a message that they would avenge the killing of some of their colleagues in a recent intelligence-based operation in Tirah.

Upon receipt of the security alert, police in Bara and other parts of Khyber have intensified their checking of suspected vehicles and motorcycles with establishment of additional checkpoints.

Police have also begun a crackdown on vehicles with tinted glass, while police patrolling has also been intensified.

In a statement issued from Shah Kas Police Centre, district police officer Saleem Abbas Kulachi said night patrolling of all the entry and exit points was in progress.

Security forces killed at least seven militants during an intelligence-based operation in Tirah, while an FC official and a policeman were martyred in a terror attack on Takhtabeg checkpost in Jamrud on July 1.

No talks planned with banned TTP, asserts FO

Pakistan has no intention to engage in talks with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, the Foreign Office asserted on Thursday.

During the weekly press briefing, FO Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch added that “this terrorist group is responsible for the deaths of Pakistani and foreign citizens within Pakistan”.

She said that terrorist groups had established sanctuaries in Afghanistan, using the territory to launch attacks against Pakistan.

Baloch stressed Pakistan's commitment to respecting Afghanistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called for reciprocal actions from Kabul.

Addressing a query, Baloch affirmed Pakistan's dedication to implementing the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan, noting that the first phase was nearing completion.

She clarified that Pakistan had not agreed to suspend this plan with the UNHCR, highlighting the government's decision to extend the validity of Proof of Registration cards for Afghan refugees by one year.

In response to another question, Baloch highlighted the multifaceted and robust partnership between Pakistan and the United States. She underscored the importance of advancing this relationship based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs.

Blasts, gunfire rock Bannu as terrorists storm check post

An attempt by ‘terrorists’ to infiltrate the cantonment area in Bannu city was ‘foiled’ through a timely response by security forces on Monday morning, officials said.

However, a clearance drive launched in the area after the attack was still underway, with sporadic gunfire being reported from the area until late in the night.

Sources said that four security personnel were martyred, while scores others, including civilians, had suffered injuries.

No official statement, however, was issued by the military’s media wing.

Earlier in the morning, militants stormed a check post adjacent to a supply depot, officials said, adding that bombers hit the boundary wall of the cantonment near the depot in their attempt to force their entry but security forces besieged them.

“Two suicide bombers attacked the check post initially and then a few others managed to enter, but they were besieged,” the officials said.

They stated that security personnel were fully alert and engaged the militants foiling the attack with a timely response, adding that soldiers fought bravely.

The officials said that security forces launched a clearance and sanitisation drive in the area following the attack, but gunshots continued to ring out till filing of this report.

A police official said they increased patrolling in urban and rural localities of Bannu district after the explosion, adding that roads leading to the cantonment were sealed as part of measures to avert any loss to citizens during the exchange of fire between security forces and militants.

Locals said the magnitude of the blast could be judged from the fact that it was heard far and wide in the area. A resident said he heard the explosion in Domel town, some 15km from Bannu city. They said they saw black smoke billowing above the site and also heard gunshots in the cantonment area.

The residents said the blast caused damage to nearby houses and shops, smashed windowpanes and blew up shutters of outlets.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terrorist activities in the past year, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

Pakistan’s counterterrorism police announce killing of suspected militant involved in major Karachi attacks

The counterterrorism department (CTD) in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province announced on Wednesday the killing of a suspected Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant involved in a major 2013 bombing and last year’s attack on police headquarters in Karachi.

Umar Farooq, described as a TTP commander, was suspected of participating in a deadly assault on a Shia mosque in Abbas Town in March 2013, using a car bomb that killed 48 people and injured over 180.

Nearly a decade later, Karachi witnessed another major attack in February 2023 when militants laid siege to the city’s police headquarters, killing four, including two officers, in a battle claimed by the TTP.

Shortly after the second attack, police announced the killing of two militants, identifying one of them, Aryad Ullah, as the alleged mastermind.

In a statement issued earlier today, the CTD said it had acted on a tip-off and apprehended Farooq, who was waiting near Hanifia Masjid on the northern bypass of the city.

“The terrorist began firing at the police to evade arrest,” the statement said. “In the ensuing exchange of fire, he was wounded and fell down.”

The CTD informed Farooq shot a policeman in the chest, who survived because he was wearing a flak jacket.

The statement noted the TTP militant was declared a fugitive by an anti-terrorism court for his role in the police headquarters attack.

It also mentioned that a recent threat alert issued by the Sindh home office warned that Farooq had been sent to Karachi by the top TTP leadership to carry out “terrorist activities” and rebuild a network.

The statement said the TTP commander had fled to Afghanistan after his acquittal in several cases, including murder, attempted murder and militancy.

Police records show 10 cases were filed against him at different police stations in Karachi between 2013 and 2014.

Legal noose tightens around Noor Wali Mehsud, Ghat Haji

Legal action has been initiated against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants Noor Wali Mehsud and Ahmad Hussain alias Ghat Haji following a recently surfaced phone call in which Mehsud instructs Ghat Haji to attack public properties and schools.

Acting on Mehsud's instructions, a girls' school in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan district was destroyed using an IED. Additionally, Mirajan, an elderly teacher from the Tank area associated with the education sector, was killed in a targeted attack.

The government has commenced legal proceedings based on the aforementioned call. Law enforcement agencies conducted a forensic test on the call, which confirmed that the voices belonged to Noor Wali Mehsud and Ahmad Hussain alias Ghat Haji.

The government has vowed that elements involved in terrorism will not be forgiven under any circumstances.

"No one will be allowed to hide behind the guise of so-called Sharia and commit heinous acts and spill innocent blood."

UNSC report highlights TTP-Afghan Taliban collaboration in Pakistan attacks

A new United Nations Security Council report has highlighted the severe threat to Pakistan's security from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), noting increased collaboration between the TTP and the Afghan Taliban in cross-border terrorist attacks, primarily targeting Pakistani military posts.

“With Taliban acquiescence, and at times support, TTP has intensified attacks inside Pakistan primarily targeting military installations,” said the report from the Council’s Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team concerning ISIL (Da’ish), Al-Qaeda and associate groups. The report noted that Pakistan suffered more than 800 attacks in the past several months.

“TTP camps with Al-Qaeda and Taliban involvement focus on training local Afghan fighters and TTP operatives,” it said, adding that the TTP has between 6,000 and 6,500 fighters who continue to use NATO weapons obtained in Afghanistan. The report also emphasised the role of night vision capability. “Al-Qaeda is funding purchases of weapons and suicide vests for TTP,” it added.

“The terrorist threat emanating from Afghanistan is causing heightened concern in many (UN) member states,” the report said.

Pakistan has consistently drawn the attention of the international community to the security threat it faces from TTP terrorists, who it says also have external support.

The report indicated, “There is heightened concern among member states about the terrorist threat emanating regionally from Afghanistan from ISIL-Khorassan and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in particular; new inward travel to Afghanistan of some Al-Qaeda personnel and training, recruitment, and reorganisation activities.”

It cites several UN member states as saying that the Al-Qaeda figure Abu Ikhlas-al Masri is actively collaborating with Jamaat-ul-Ahrar in providing suicide bomber training to TTP in Kunar Province. Two states have held TTP responsible for the March 26 attack against Chinese nationals working on a hydropower dam project near Besham in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

“There is increased support and collaboration between TTP and the Taliban, sharing manpower and training camps in Afghanistan and conducting more lethal attacks under the banner of Tehreek-e Jihad Pakistan (TJP). Therefore, TTP could transform into an umbrella organisation for other terrorist groups,” the report stated.

ISIL-K or Da’ish remains the most serious threat, projecting terror beyond Afghanistan, while Al-Qaeda exercises strategic patience, prioritising its relationship with the Taliban.

“Some Member States estimate that ISIL-K has increased from 4,000 to 6,000 fighters, despite the loss of territory and attrition among leadership, while others assess its strength remaining at between 2,000 and 3,500 fighters,” the report said, adding that it was difficult to estimate an accurate figure.

“ISIL-K has relocated some personnel away from its core area of Kunar and Nangarhar, with factions migrating to Badakhshan, Herat, and Nimroz Provinces, adopting an asymmetric warfare strategy better suited to local conditions and to resist Taliban pressure,” the report added. “The group aspires to control Afghan territory from which to infiltrate neighbouring countries, expanding the terrorist threat to Central Asia, the Russian Federation, and Iran.”

The report also said that ISIL-K perceives the Taliban as an ideological enemy and opposes the notion of a Pashtun-centric Taliban governance. “The group’s narrative aims to reduce the Taliban’s credibility among the Afghan population and trigger sectarian fault lines, promoting the idea that the Taliban has deviated from Islamic principles, while portraying itself as advancing the ‘wider Khorasan’.”

Regarding Al-Qaeda, the report noted that its status, location, and strength in Afghanistan have not changed, remaining dormant and strictly hierarchical.

“Despite lacking current capacity to conduct large-scale operations externally, Al-Qaeda seeks to strengthen cooperation with regional terrorist organisations of non-Afghan origin, such as ETIM/TIP, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and Jamaat Ansarullah (JA) for expansion to Central Asia,” the report concluded.

Man dead, 4 injured in explosion in Dera Ismail Khan: rescue official

A man died while three children and a woman were injured in an explosion in Gilani Town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan division on Saturday, rescue officials said.

Aizaz Mahmood, spokesperson for D.I. Khan’s Rescue 1122 service, confirmed the casualties from the same family in a statement to Dawn.com.

“A man died while four people, including three children and a woman, were injured in the blast,” the statement said. “The cause of the explosion could not be ascertained as of yet,” it added.

Mahmood said Rescue 1122’s medical and disaster rescue vehicles responded immediately under the supervision of Emergency Officer Nomanullah and the directives of District Emergency Officer Engineer Faseehullah.

All injured and the body of the deceased had been shifted to a hospital, Mahmood said, adding that the rescue teams were present on the incident site to clear the rubble.

Last month, seven people were injured in an explosion caused by a gas leak at Islamia University Bahawalpur. The explosion damaged the building, causing about half of it to collapse.

In the past few months, Sindh has also witnessed an alarming surge in explosions caused by liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.

While gas cylinders and leakages are a common cause of explosions in residential buildings, such incidents in KP are also caused by landmines.

April and May saw at least one incident each of landmine blasts in the D.I. Khan division, resulting in casualties.

Five people, including two policemen, were injured in a Friday morning blast in Peshawar, according to a police official.

“A police van was on patrol when a remote-controlled IED (improvised explosive device) exploded,” Warsak Superintendent of Police (SP) Arshad Khan told Dawn.com.

The incident occurred at around 9am, according to the police official.

“Four to five kilogrammes of explosives were used in the blast,” SP Arshad noted.

“Six to seven suspects have also been detained for investigation,” he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Kashif Zulfiqar told Dawn.com that evidence has been collected from the crime scene.

“There has been an increase in terrorist attacks on Warsak Road,” SSP Zulfiqar said. “A few days ago, a grenade was thrown at the Mathura police station.”

SSP Zulfiqar said that police are working with the counter-terrorism department (CTD) in the area. “A joint operation will be conducted in the areas of Warsak Road.”

“The group involved in terrorist activities will soon be exposed,” he added.

The incident is the latest in a string of attacks on police officials and checkposts, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Attacks escalated after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) broke a fragile ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022 and vowed to target security forces.

On Wednesday, a head constable was martyred and a constable suffered injuries when unidentified militants hurled a hand grenade on a check post in Mayar, Lower Dir.

Last month, a constable was injured when militants attacked a police post in Peshawar’s Regi Model Town on the city’s outskirts.

In January 2023, a suicide attack on a mosque in Peshawar’s Police Lines killed 100 people, many of whom were police officials.

TTP had claimed responsibility for the attack. It later distanced itself from it but sources earlier indicated that it might have been the handiwork of some local faction of the outlawed group.

3 killed, policemen among 13 injured in Pishin blast

Two children and a woman were killed on Saturday while two policemen were among 13 people injured when a blast occurred at a main market near Surkhab Chowk in Balochistan’s Pishin district, hospital officials said.

According to a list of the casualties issued by Dr Wakeel Sherani, the medical superintendent at Pishin Civil Hospital, two children were killed in today’s blast while 14 were initially injured.

Thirteen of the wounded were referred to the Quetta Trauma Centre, where a woman succumbed to her injuries, a list issued by the hospital’s managing director Dr Arbab Kamran showed.

Five injured people were in serious condition, two had minor injuries, the treatment of three was under way and two had been discharged from the Trauma Centre, the list stated.

According to Pishin City Station House Officer (SHO) Mujibur Rehman, the two injured policemen were in critical condition.

“Apparently, the explosive material was planted in a motorcycle,” SHO Rehman said, adding that as a result, three vehicles were damaged.

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Bomb Disposal Squad have reached the incident site to collect evidence for a probe, the official said.

According to state broadcaster PTV News, the blast occurred near the Pishin deputy commissioner’s office.

The attack comes days after two pedestrians were injured in a roadside explosion in Noshki district, which the police said occurred when a convoy of Frontier Crops was passing by.

Last month, a blast in Pishin caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) left three CTD officials and three pedestrians injured. Police officials had said the attack was aimed at a CTD vehicle carrying the department’s personnel.

The same day, in a similar incident, a soldier of the Quick Response Force of the Frontier Corps South was martyred and seven others were injured in Kech district’s Buleda area.

Condemnations pour in

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the blast near police lines in Pishin, Radio Pakistan reported.

Expressing deep grief and sorrow over the martyrdom of young children in the explosion, PM Shehbaz said “cowardly terrorists who attack young children do not deserve to be called humans”.

The premier prayed for the recovery of the injured policemen and other people in the incident, directing that they be provided with the best possible medical treatment.

PM Shehbaz called for those responsible for the incident to be identified and given exemplary punishment. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the war against terrorism.

President Asif Ali Zardari also conveyed his sorrow over the incident to the bereaved families.

“Those responsible should be given exemplary punishment according to the law,” President Zardari said in a statement, reiterating the resolve to continue operations against terrorists.

He prayed for the deceased and their families.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the blast “near the Police Lines”, expressing grief over the loss of children’s lives.

Extending his sympathies to the children’s families, Naqvi said in a statement: “This war [against terrorism] will continue till the terrorists and their enablers are eradicated.”

He stressed that the fight was for “Pakistan’s honour and to give the future generations a peaceful and safe Pakistan”.

Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured, he said the nation and the security forces stood together in the war against terrorism.

Balochistan Government Spokesperson Shahid Rind condemned the “terrorist incidents in Pishin and Noshki”, regretting the loss of precious human lives.

“Anti-society and anti-state elements do not deserve any concession,” Rind asserted. “Terrorists are targeting innocent and sinless people to achieve their nefarious goals,” he added.

The spokesperson directed the provincial health department to provide the best medical facilities to those injured in the blast.

Mohmand attack foiled: Four suicide bombers killed by security forces in K-P

Security forces successfully thwarted a significant attack on the Frontier Corps (FC) headquarters in Mohmand district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the military’s media wing said on Saturday.

The assault was carried out by a group of four suicide bombers affiliated with the extremist group Fitna al-Khawarij, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The militants attempted to breach the FC headquarters in the early hours of Friday but were swiftly neutralised by the security personnel.

"The attempt to enter the camp was effectively thwarted by our forces, and all four suicide bombers were killed before they could inflict any damage," ISPR stated.

The successful operation prevented what could have been a devastating attack.

Following the thwarted attack, a sanitisation operation is underway to ensure no other terrorists remain in the area.

The ISPR affirmed the forces' continued vigilance and commitment to eliminating terrorism from the country.

“Our security forces stand valiant, demonstrating sheer determination and resolve in their mission,” the military’s media wing added.

In a separate incident, five terrorists were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces at the Surkhab refugee camp in Pishin district.

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) reported that a substantial cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the terrorists' hideout.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, during a Defence Day ceremony at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, reaffirmed the government's commitment to combating terrorism.

He pledged to continue the operation against Fitna al-Khawarij until their complete eradication, highlighting a national consensus on the need to tackle this threat.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also praised the security forces for their effective response to the attack.

He commended their bravery in thwarting the assault under the cover of darkness, emphasising their crucial role in maintaining national security.

The combined efforts of the security forces in Mohmand and Pishin underscore Pakistan's ongoing struggle against terrorism, with a clear message of resilience and resolve from both military and government officials.

TTP ‘denies’ involvement in Swat attack on diplomats

A case has been registered against unidentified persons over Sunday’s explosion which targeted a diplomatic convoy in Swat.

The Counter-Terrorism Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police has registered the FIR a day after one cop was martyred and five others were injured in the attack.

The FIR has been registered under sections 324, 353 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code; sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act; and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

The PPC sections deal with crimes of wilful murder, assault on public servants and causing damage, while Section 7 of ATA outlines a punishment of ten years to life for acts of terrorism.

The outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan has denied its involvement in the attack, according to AFP.

In a statement, the group said it had “nothing to do with the attack” targeting the foreign ambassadors of a dozen nations.

The attack has been condemned by the Swat Chamber of Commerce, traders’ federation, lawyers, and civil society members.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayer of martyred constable Burhan Khan was held at the Police Lines, Mingora, on Monday.

He was laid to rest with official honours in his ancestral cemetery in Shamozai village of Swat.

6 army men martyred, as many TTP terrorists killed in North Waziristan IBO: ISPR

Six soldiers were martyred and as many TTP terrorists killed in North Waziristan as security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation (IBO), the military’s media affairs wing said on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), six Khawarij (TTP terrorists) were neutralised during an exchange of fire that took place between the security forces and terrorists on the night of October 4/5 in Spinwam general area of North Waziristan.

The statement said that as many “brave” soldiers including Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Ali Shoukat, who was leading the troops, were martyred.

The five soldiers who “paid the ultimate sacrifice” were identified as Lance Naik Muhammad Ullah, Lance Naik Akhtar Zaman, Lance Naik Shahid Ullah , Lance Naik Yusaf Ali and Sepoy Jameel Ahmed.

In another statement, ISPR said that two Khawarij were killed, including “ring leader Attaullah, also known as Mehran” as law enforcement agencies conducted a joint intelligence-based operation in Charbagh general area of Swat.

Attaullah was “actively involved in numerous terrorist activities, including the Improvised Explosive Device blast on a Police Vehicle escorting the convoy of foreign dignitaries in Swat on 22 September 2024”, it added.

ISPR said sanitisation operations were being carried out to eliminate any other terrorists, adding that “security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe-out the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve.”

While it wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the statement which terrorist group was involved in the attack, in July, the government, through an official notification, designated the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as Fitna al Khawarij, while mandating all institutions to use the term khariji (outcast) when referring to the perpetrators of terrorist attacks on Pakistan.

Pakistan has lately witnessed a sharp uptick in the number of attacks targeting security forces, other law enforcement agencies, and security checkpoints, particularly in Balochistan and KP.

Attacks escalated after the TTP broke a fragile ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022 and vowed to target security forces.

Foreign Office rejects advice for dialogue with TTP

The Foreign Office of Pakistan has firmly rejected any offers or advice regarding dialogue with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), according to Radio Pakistan.

During her weekly news briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, FO Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch reiterated that Pakistan has no interest in engaging with terror groups responsible for the deaths of civilians and security personnel.

She stated, "Such recommendations are an affront to the people who have lost their loved ones due to the activities of the TTP."

Baloch highlighted that Afghan authorities hold the primary responsibility for taking action against terror groups, particularly the TTP, which operate from Afghanistan.

She noted that Pakistan has provided concrete evidence to the Afghan authorities regarding this issue.

The spokesperson also raised concerns about India's extraterritorial and extrajudicial activities, urging the international community to call on India to refrain from such actions within Pakistan and globally.

In response to a question, Baloch affirmed that Chinese nationals are valued guests in Pakistan, making significant contributions to the country's development.

She emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring full security for Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions, a commitment that has been communicated at the highest levels of Chinese leadership.
