Two Pakistan boxers abscond in Birmingham after CWG

Boxers Nazeerullah, Suleman went for breakfast few hours before departure but didn’t return to athletes’ village

Two members of Pakistan’s delegation at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England absconded before their journey back home.

Boxers Nazeerullah Khan and Suleman Baloch had left the village housing the athletes to grab breakfast ahead of their departure on August 9 but didn’t report back.

Pakistan boxing team management made every effort to find them but to no avail, leaving the other three boxers and coach Arshad Hussain to depart without them.

According to sources, boxers’ passports and tickets are with the team management. The organizers of Commonwealth Games and the concerned authorities have also been informed about their disappearance.

Moreover, the police have also begun search for the missing boxers. It must be noted that two Sri Lankan athletes had also gone missing during the sporting extravaganza.

The entire UK is currently living under economic uncertainty. People have no money to put food on the table let alone pay for energy bills.

I just hope no business owner will risk their livelihood by offering cash in hand pay for illegals.

On another note, UK is no longer a member of the EU, so back street entry to the EU (or vice versa) is not possible either.

I remember athletes from India used to disappear in foreign countries too back on 80's. They know that once they go back to their homeland, they will not be recognized and will live in poverty.

The only way to discourage illegal immigration is to give strict punishment to anyone who attempts it and deport them right away without a hearing. Giving them accommodation and food on humanitarian grounds will only encourage more.

Have you read the story of Hussain Shah? the last fighter to medal at the Olympics. It’s a travesty from multiple angles, but for me the high levels of corruption in their governing body is beyond pathetic and also the lack of investment over the years. You don’t play boxing and with little resource, support or any national or regional championship of note, the amateur sport is dead up there, there’s raw talent and some good coaches if they are lucky, the rest is shear will power. When these lads qualify, I always find it staggering, just think what Muhammad Waseem could have been. On the flip side, his career trajectory would have been their best bet and that was far from ideal. It’s not great to see this and one hopes there are no repeat offenders, but a good way to save the sport would be for their governing bodies to support those who they hope to put forward in qualifying events, because these guys win the lottery if they get 3 meals a day and that’s poor for a sportsman, not just any sportsman but a fighter.

And that just means these guys are not wanted by the immigrating country & they have no justification for claiming asylum. These guys are abusing both the countries by immigrating illegally.

Agree, talent is number 1 in combat sports esp boxing but not enough on its own. Boxers in Pakistan need a lot of support, from sponsorship, eilte coaching and good management. Pakistan now has good wrestler, even MMA fighters are coming through. Godwilling in the next decade with a good government, we will see many top level combat athletes.
