The UK has suspended sales of arms to Turkey for items that might be used in the country's military offensive in Syria.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told MPs on Tuesday: "The UK government takes its arm export control responsibilities very seriously and in this case, of course, we will keep our defence exports to Turkey under very careful and continual review.

"No further export licences to Turkey for items that might be used in military operations in Syria will be granted while we conduct that review."

Turkey's military incursion in Syria entered its seventh day on Tuesday, with reports of heavy bombardment of Syrian Kurdish positions near a town in north-east Syria.

Turkey's action aims to combat Syrian Kurdish forces, which Ankara regards as terrorists and links to a decades-old insurgency in the country, from its border.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has pledged to continue with Turkey's military operations, despite international condemnation.

Mr Raab told the House of Commons: "With close partners, we must at times be candid and clear.

"This is not the action we expected from an ally. It is reckless, it is counter-productive."

The foreign secretary added Turkey's offensive "plays straight into the hands of Russia" and the Syrian regime, led by Bashar al-Assad.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked Mr Erdogan to end the fighting in a telephone call at the weekend.

But Mr Erogan has since written in the Wall Street Journal: "The international community missed its opportunity to prevent the Syrian crisis from pulling an entire region into a maelstrom of instability.

"The European Union - and the world - should support what Turkey is trying to do."

NATO general secretary Jens Stoltenberg, speaking after a meeting with Mr Johnson in 10 Downing Street, said he was "deeply concerned about the consequences" of Turkey's offensive.

"Both when it comes to the fight against Daesh, human suffering, and stability in the wider region," he said.

Mr Stoltenberg added the suspension of arms sales to EU nations by Turkey "reflects that many NATO allies are very critical and are condemning the military operation in northern Syria".

Campaigners have estimated the UK has licensed £1.1bn worth of arms to Turkey since Mr Erdoğan became the country's president in 2014.

This includes arms exports licences for aircraft, drones, tanks and missiles.

Andrew Smith, of the Campaign Against Arms Trade, claimed the government had been "shamed" into curbing arms sales to Turkey on Tuesday.

He said: "The truth is that it should never have been arming and supporting President Erdogan and his authoritarian regime in the first place.

"This change cannot only be limited future arms sales, it must also affect the hundreds of millions of pounds worth of arms that have been licensed over recent years. As long as those licences are still valid then those arms can be used.

"This should also mark a turning point in UK foreign policy in Turkey."

Allan Hogarth, Amnesty International UK's head of policy and government affairs, said: "This is the right decision by the foreign secretary, and one that hasn't come a moment too soon.

"The UK has a responsibility to minimise the risk of UK weaponry contributing to violations of international humanitarian law.

"What the UK has done in days over Turkey, it should have done years ago over Saudi Arabia given the carnage the Saudi-led coalition has caused in Yemen.

"Today's move over Turkey is welcome, but it's a reminder of how ramshackle and inconsistent the UK's arms control system actually is."

So why can't they stop selling their arms to Saudi? - who continue to use arms (supplied by the British) to kill Yemeni civilians.

This is outstanding news and I welcome this, there are other issues to, I hope they are reviewed but this is incredible! Almost unprecedented. Hopefully in the future this will pave the way for similar actions, excellent from my beloved country! Mamoon

so the turks peeved off the us by buying weapons from russians, who will now back asad who will back the kurds the turks are going to fight against, to which trump has given a tacit green light despite supposedly being peeved with the turks.

man the geopolitics of that region is more entangled than a medieval European royal family tree.

It’s more to do with Turkey invading Syria and killing Kurds than any form of altruism.

We have export law when it comes to how our millitary tech is used ethically, nice to see it being obeyed

What has UK got to sale in first place?

Drones, misslies, tanks etc. Recently the UK rose to the second biggest arms exporter. 80% going to the middle east. Easy money for the UK government, sell billions to the middle so they can use those same weapons to destroy the region on their behalf.

This suspension is only for eye candy. UK will continue to provide what has already been agreed. They are only suspending future sales but Turkey is buying more from Russia now. Fooling the gullable public again.

It is a very encouraging move that should be appreciated. Yes they need to extent it to the Saudis but something is better than nothing. At least they are less hypocritical than us - we talk about human rights in Kashmir but supports the atrocities of Turkey against the Kurds.

Please show me where the govt has supported the Turks against the kurd? Thanks.

Pakistan: Turkey has our “full support” of Pakistan to bomb Kurds.

Also Pakistan: India is committing human rights violations and hurting the Ummah by imposing curfew in Kashmir.

If hypocrisy had a face...

India being deeply concerned about Turkish intervention isn't hypocrisy I assume? :sachin

Lol what. The U.K. government is just as hypocritical. They sold weapons to Gaddafi just before they invaded Libya and removed him from power. It’s all about money my friend and Saudis have tons of it. They haven’t said a peep about the Saudis bombing Yemeni.

Your bias is showing.

As I have said in a different thread, I don’t support the creation of states or separatist movements. Kurdistan should not be created, as it will cause more problems in the region.

Everyone is a hypocrite and that includes nation states. They will all have things that they deeply care about at the expense of other issues that are equally as important. Whilst Pakistan cries about Kashmir, it is ignoring the Muslims in China. Same thing happens in all other countries. But I guess that is realpolitik.

As long as minorities are being crushed in Pakistan, I don’t care much for what happens elsewhere. My fellow countrymen are my top most priority. Hence, I don’t feel strongly about what happens in J&K (they are not Pakistanis and never will be), China, Palestine, Syria and elsewhere.

The hypocrites are the ones who shed crocodile tears for Kashmir while defending/supporting the atrocities against the Kurds and the Uyghurs.

Also, please don’t call me Indian. I am more of a Pakistani than a Citizen Khan like you ever will be. You are just another British Pakistani who cannot walk the talk and exercises his patriotism over the internet.

I clearly said that they need to act against the Saudis as well and of course we cannot ignore the dark past of their imperialism. They are pretty much solely responsible for the Kashmir problem and the Middle East crisis post WWII.

Britain did not invade Libya and remove Gaddafi. You are thinking of Iraq and Saddam.

Britain helped create a no-fly zone over Libya and bombed in support of rebel forces, as part of NATO in support of a UN Resolution IIRC. This move backfired as jihadist forces moved in and the region became more unstable than before. I was baffled by it after the Iraq disaster.

You are right. But the point is that Britain sold weapons to Gaddafi and then bombed Libya.

Remember folks, it was the UK crying over a chemical attack in some shoddy town. Claims of how Chemical weapons are banned under international law were bandied about. The reality? UK is permitted by law not only to produce chemical weapons, but to sell them to the highest international bidder too!

The UK has blood on their hands, do not believe this nonsense about UK having no hand in the mess that is the Middle East, the issues in the ME are the result of the UK.

Innocent people have died at the hands of a UK made bomb paid for by the British taxpayer.

Do not let anyone tell you the UK government is innocent UK do not care when they drop bombs, but cry their eyes out when the tables have turned.

Ask yourself, why does UK still produce and sell chemical and military weapons?

What I find strange is that only non-muslims have «right» to call out who are terrorists or who are not.

If America had said those kurds are terrorists no western country would have had any objection.

LOL UK still thinks it is country of any significance.

Turkey is embarking on making their own fifth gen fighter. They make their own subs, destroyers, corvettes. They make their own helicopters and electronic warfare equipment. They make their own guns, missiles, anti-tank rockets. The list goes on and on. Heck in the F-35 program Turkey was one of the key partners for the procurement of avionics.

As if Turkey is fighting some kind of mega war. All Turkey needs to do is provide artillery support to Turkish backed rebels and then they can use the military hardware and supplies abandoned by YPG.

UK is very significant to Turkey. Since 2016 Turkey have bought $1billion worth of weapons. As for their own fighter jet, this will get a lot of help from BAE systems. I think the Turks know.

Trump has said the PKK are worse than ISIS. lol He has also said Kurds are not angels. Its just all talk for western nations to continue fooling their public into thinking they are the good guys. Trump has given Turkey the go ahead.

Its funny how Trump is evil when he talks about Israel and hates Muslims, walks about with Modi, threatens China and so on

but the moment he attacks Kurds and supports Erdogan, Trumps word is seen as gospel and he is seen as a great person

Because certain hypocrites continue to pay for them while criticizing the British government for making and selling chemical weapons.

Both of you are British citizens and so if the British government has blood on their hands, it is because of you, since they are using your tax money for funding. Hence, by extension, you have blood on your hands as well.

You have two options: you can either continue to practice your hypocrisy and justify why you have a clear conscience in spite of funding the deaths of millions of Muslims, or you can leave the UK so that you don’t have a part in their war crimes.

I know which option you will choose (and have since the UK got involved in the WoT).

Showing solidarity and support over the Internet while living and enjoying the western standard of living and security is very easy and convenient.

Clearly, you do not care about the plight of the innocent Muslims in the Middle-East as much as you care about the money that you earn in £. Your care is strictly limited to the Internet and social media.

If you truly cared, you would refuse to allow your £s to be used to commit atrocities against the Muslims of the Middle-East and you would have left the UK.

Obviously, that is difficult and would require a lot of sacrifice, but that is what a sincere and a genuine person would do.

If you are okay with millions of Muslims dying with your tax money because of materialism, don’t blame the UK government for doing the same. They are also okay with producing and selling chemical weapons because it brings revenue.

The biggest hypocrites are not the U.S. and UK governments; the biggest hypocrites are the so-called Pakistanis living in these countries who pay for their war crimes while criticizing them over the Internet.

You did not answer the question, you just wanted to post a new word you learned of late, hypocrite. I got another word for you, mirror.

Thanks for playing though.

I answered - they are producing chemical weapons because they make money of it. They have sold their conscience for money just like you, which is why you are comfortably with funding their producing of chemical weapons that are used to kill Muslims.

I learned the word hypocrisy in grade 1, but after decades, I know realize that the word was invented to describe Pakistanis living in the U.S. and UK who criticize their governments for atrocities while funding them with their tax money.

Don’t thank me. I should thank you for running away from cold, hard facts instead of prolonging your misery. You know you have no rebuttal to the points I raised.

There is no nuance to your argument. First of all you are generalising all Pakistanis living in the US and the U.K.

Secondly, not all are against their western governments. I only pointed out in an earlier post that everyone is a hypocrite and acts in their own self interest and not just Pakistan. I have no major issues with British foreign policy in the large.

Thirdly, Ministers dictate government policy and parliament develop and vote on legislation. The public doesn’t do **** apart from vote for their Member of Parliament. Democracy is a sham and has so many issues. Brexit is a clear example with the public’s vote not being delivered by Parliament.

Fourthly, most of the taxes go towards services to the British public, not to fund chemical weapons. That’s what people pay tax towards and campaign against poor government spending.

There are so many factors to this, but all you do is tarnish a whole community by generalising. You really have some agenda because that’s all I’m seeing from your posts.

You didn’t get my point.

I am not generalizing the Pakistanis who are living in the West. There is nothing wrong with. Everyone has the right to better their lives.

Also, there are millions of Pakistanis in both countries who don’t really care about what their government does in other countries. They only care about themselves and their families which is perfectly understandable.

My problem is with the Internet champions who spend their time criticizing their governments for manufacturing chemical weapons and killing innocent Muslims.

If these people feel so strongly about the sufferings of Muslims in the Middle-East and also in Pakistan and Afghanistan, why are they comfortably with paying their tax money to the governments who then use that money to fund the atrocities on Muslims?

If the governments have blood on their hands then so do these people.

It is not about where most of the tax money goes. The fact is that at least some portion of their money is used to manufacture these chemical weapons that they criticize.

If these fake people are so concerned with the sufferings of Muslims, why don’t they get out of those countries, revoke their citizenships and stop paying taxes so that they don’t have a part in the killings of Muslims?

It is difficult right? It is very hard to leave a place where you and your family are comfortable and make good money only because that money is being used to kill other Muslims.

But then these fake hypocrites should make peace with their hypocrisy and not criticize their respective governments.

You can’t be a British or an American taxpayer and then criticize Britain and America for killing innocent people when you don’t have a problem with giving them your money so that they can commit the atrocities.

So in short, I don’t have an issue with Pakistanis living in these countries. I only have an issue with those Pakistanis whose concern for their plight of Muslims is limited to the Internet where they act moral and considerate.

Unfortunately, their actions speak way louder than their words.

You just post waffle and irrelevance. You just want to repeat a new word you have learned - hypocrite.

In simple English, those who say the West do not intervene in foreign affairs, should ask themselves the question I raised. Given your babble, you agree with what I am saying, UK is not squeaky clean, but used the opportunity to air your insecurities.

You might impress others, not me.

Yes, incredible really; autonomy at that level is frankly scary. Also forgot to mention the waves Reaction Engines have been making with Skylon and the SABRE engine which not only have a space application but also civil aerospace with a Mach 5.4 capability which may just change how we travel forever as this is significantly faster then speeds jet engines are able to achieve currently.
