Every single game, he seems to be playing in a different position. One game he's at 4, the next he's down at 6. Some people even want him to open for us at the World Cup. I think we need to find him a place in the side and stick with it. We're playing around with him too much and he's having to adjust accordingly. Look at Kohli, he has the number 4 position cemented for India. We need to decide what we want from him and stick to it. Keeper or not keeper? Opener, 3, 4, 5, 6? What position do you think he should be playing at?

Pakistan used to do this with Afridi and he said it is one of the most unsettling this for a batsman. Every match having to come at a different position is difficult. Opening one match and down at 6 the next, then up at 2 to number 5. It's never nice to be moved around a lot or being forced to play roles that don't suit you. Misbah made a statement how they were forcing Akmal to play the role of the finisher.

Not keeper.

4 and given an extended run there. 4

Ridiculous the way Pakistan treat their youngsters and then people wonder where all the talent is going in our domestic curcuit.

Lets try to put some method behind this:
how many matches at number 4?
against which opposition?
in which conditions (flat pitches in UAE or lively Brisbane/Perth)
batting first or batting second?
under lights or day match?
under which captain?
Under which coach?

I want to understand what are these conditions which need to be met before we can say that Umar Akmal has under-performed because its his own fault and not others?

Umar Akmal can only bat at 6, or open with a license to kill. He doesn't know how to build an innings, nor does he know how to learn. He's an improved version of Afridi, except he doesn't bowl.

I think Umar Akmal is immensely talented but my fear is that he might be giving the same excuses for his performance as his fans do here. He can do whatever he puts his mind to if he accepts that its his responsibility

There is no doubt about his talent, but his application is poor. Whenever he's batted in the middle order, he's given his wicket away unnecessarily. He needs to learn how to build an innings properly.

Application is something he can't make excuses for. Even if he bats at 6, he needs to show application of talent, which he doesn't. He's got so much more talent than being a 38 Averaging finisher.

He should open with Shezad. Leave the finishing to Sarfaraz and Hafeez. He plays pace well can take advantage of the field and a early loss as an opener is easier to recover from than a failure at 6. He will have less pressure as an opener.

His best place where Pakistan can get maximum out of him is that of an opener .... He 's not suited to no. 3 or 4 position as it sometimes requires u to play an anchoring role which he is poor at .... At 6 , i feel he is being wasted & remains under pressure every second game .... Btw , wasn't he opening for Pakistan in his under-19 days ??? He performed brilliantly as opener too in the A tour to australia just before he made his debut if i remember correctly ....

Seriously he is fine at number 6.. averaging 40 at 6.

I would like to give him a shot at opening position but dont want to disturb opening pair of shehzad and sarfraz who have done well lately.

He should be batting at 4 .

But more importantly needs to learn to pace his innings. Otherwise it will be vain .

A good player should be able to adapt to the situation presented In odis these days nobody should have a fixed position but be flexible

However we have seen he just doesnt seem to have the temperament or adaptability to build a long innings

Akmal isnt a newbiw Hes been.around for 5 years Its high time we stopped saying he doesnt have a fixed position and expect him to perform wherever he bats

Lets try to put some method behind this:
how many matches at number 4? 15-20
against which opposition? Whoever
in which conditions (flat pitches in UAE or lively Brisbane/Perth) Any conditions
batting first or batting second? Both
under lights or day match? All
under which captain? Any, although the current captain wants to shoehorn him into a finishers role as though it is something you learn.
Under which coach? Whoever is in charge.

You cannot play a striker in defence and call them a rubbish footballer. Akmal comes in too late in the order. What better choice do we have at 4?

Which one of our batsman can adapt to the situation them? Why do most cricketers have a fixed position? Don't see cook opening the innings and then a few matches later playing at shifting to 6 and then up to 3.

Would you like to see the report card of the 5 times he has batted at number 4

Umar doesn't have the game for 3/4/5.

He should either open or bat at 6.

He should be batting at #3 or #4. Two down seems most realistic so I'm hoping he bats there, sandwiched between Fawad and Misbah. Maqsood seems like a better finisher than Akmal and should at #6.

But sohaib and Fawad are not playing this series........

Opener or neither. Unless he is bowling specialist, a position of tailender. He makes mockery of the responsibility of middle-order judging by his implementing shots, very similar to Afridi, doesn't deserve to be in the team unless he is used as opener. We already have slogger in form of Afridi who evades criticism using the excuse of so-called bowling.

I am glad Sarfraz Ahmed has joined the team at the right time. He compliments our batting line very well, tremendous opener as well as reliable batsman in under pressure. He will play vital role for Pakistan in ODI WC, Insha Allah!.

Umar Akmal bats at no.5 in this game, however thanks to Azhar Ali's injury, he comes in just as the first ball of the 10th over is bowled..

Apparently the theory is Umar Akmal has been restrained from hitting centuries in ODIs since he bats too low down the order (at no.6)

Well, 240 balls remaining in the game.. What stopped him from scoring in this game..

His score was 0 in the first 12 deliveries he faced..

He survived a close lbw shout..

He edged it for 4 in slips

He hit Faulkner on the up which was a dangerous shot considering mid on was up..

in his 24 deliveries, not once did he look like someone who will carry on for long..

Coming too far across to play a ball on middle stump down the leg side, he didn't look like he had the shots to put the ball away for a single..

His dot balls were a plenty, he didn't know how to rotate the strike.. majority of the deliveries he faced were dots..

Nothing from his batting made you think this was a batsman who had the tools to be a no.3-4

His stats actually flatter him, he has a natural urgency to slog, he can't contain his shots.. when he has to bat for long hours he looks at sea, and honestly looks bored with himself..

There is no application in his batting, and the weight he has put on is not doing any favors on him either..

He is not doing Pakistan a favor by playing the long format (50 overs).. he should stick to t20s where its hit or get out for the batsman

Not to forget a wild slog down the ground to Starc to hit him in the stands.. what was that?

Is he playing t20? Are we in the last overs of the game?

The likelihood of that shot going for six was probably you trying to put a key inside a lock with your eyes shut and the lock moving.. however he played that shot.. why would he do that?

It's because he doesn't have the patience or the aptitude to play out an innings like that..

However kept him out of the team did the right thing, this guy lacks the skill to be an International level middle order batsman..

He's a gun player in t20s where he changes the match in 5-6 overs he plays.. but besides that he is to ADHD to play a long innings

This kind of batting works in Pakistan, where you don't need to run much, just hit boundaries.. survive 3-4 dropped chances before you get to a 100..

This kind of batting doesn't work anywhere else where the fielding won't allow you second chances
