Pacer Umar Gul has decided to retire from all forms of cricket after the conclusion of the National T20 Cup, scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 18, ARY Sports reported.

The upcoming T20 event will be his last and now has aimed to pursue a career in cricket coaching. He is part of Balochistan’s first XI and is expected to play the role of a player-cum- mentor.

The 36-year-old represented Pakistan in 47 Tests, 130 ODIs, and 85 T20Is and picked 427 wickets across formats.

It must be noted that Umar is part of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Cricket Committee and was under immense criticism over his inclusion in the committee despite playing in the domestic cricket.

Good on him. We need coaches who've played in the current era.

All the best champ. Hope PCB transfers a pacer to Balochistan.

He was? His entire job on the committee was to be player representative...

He was lethal in death overs. I always thought it was always wrong to give him the new ball. Our great coach Waqar though didn't budge and kept giving him the new ball even after he got hammered. He is a true old ball bowler and his yorkers, reverse swing (and both together) was absolutely devastating. I credit him more than anyone else for us winning the World T20 in 2009, and getting to the finals of World T20 2007.

Suckee in test but was a beast in t20.

He became terrible in odis as he would get hit for runs in odis

Needs to be kept in the cricket set up. I am sure he has a lot to offer.

The GUL- Dozer fondly remembered for his t20 performances around 2007 - 2010, one of the reasons pak did so well with that option in the middle overs. Who could also forget the great batting performance against south africa. wish him all the best, and hope he can help the youngsters in some sort of capacity going forward.

He dissapointed in Test matches and underachieved, but he was very useful in ODI and T-20's. Sadly his knee injury was mismanaged by the PCB in 2013 which disrupted his career. I am sure the PCB spoke to him and he also realized he has better prospects coaching in the revised domestic structure, high performance centre set up in the long run

The best i saw Gul bowl was in the England ODI Series in 2010 and in the 2011 WC where he was hitting 90-93 mph with the new and old ball, he was truly in perfect rhythm. Sadly he could not replicate the same form consistently which was a big problem in his entire career.

He was great in LOIs from 2007-11.
Unfortunately had a knee injury and lost his pace.

Underachieved in Tests but was a beast in T20s and good in ODIs as well.

A great player and a lovely human being. I'll still never ever forget his performance in the WC t20 2009, this man was a machine especially with his bowling efforts in the all important semi final and final. Best of luck to him and his family for the future.

Congratulations on a good career.

I believe he is Pakistan's most test capped fast bowler, since the retirements of Wasim and Waqar.

Injuries effected his career but still a Pakistani hero for world T20 2009 performance. The second last over to Duminy and Morkel was one of the greatest death bowling

Not many can claim to be the best in the World in their profession but Guli was in the T20 format during 2008-2010 era. Good career overall, blighted by injuries

he was terrible in test, it was soo annoying watching him bowl in the 2010 england series. While Amir and Asif bowled well, Gul was just leaking runs and doing nothing. He had to be replaced by Wahab Riaz in that series i think for the last match.

In odis he was just alright, got smacked for runs

in T20 he was a GOAT. Just marvelous.

I assume he didnt work hard after getting married. He just toned done abit

Leader of our bowling attack from 2007-2012
An excellent exponent of yorkers and reverse swing.
One of the best bowlers of t20is.

Great bowler for us from 2007 to 2012 period.

Also remember his match winning performance to win a test against India

Just over a decade after the heroics of 2009, congrats on a solid career all things considered going by Pakistan's success rate post Wasim/Waqar. Gul when on song was a treat to watch, he did well in the limited forms, turned it up in ICC tournaments and was at his most devastating best in the T20 format; in fact the greatest as a fast bowler in the formats history in my view

I remember when Gul bowled Pakistan to the semi-final in 2009, we were all singing Dil Dil Pakistan in the pub! fantastic bowler and one hell of a character!

He was poor in tests and average in ODI's, but phenomenal T20 bowler.

For me the best T20 fast bowler ever. Never seen a better yorker in the modern era. Thank you Gul for some great T20 tournaments.

Made his decision and announced it.

Well done.

None of this degrading nonsense of keep playing until you are kicked out.

I could be wrong, but i suspect the PCB may have counselled him and the likes of Imran Farhat i.e. they can contribute more to Pakistan Cricket by getting into coaching. Don't forget, the PCB as part of the regional cricket structure is planning to develop 90 city associations where they need managers, coaches e.t.c.

The 2 new balls rule in ODIs was detrimental for his ODI career. He had a great 2011 WC(except SF) with reverse swing coming into play.

But ever since that new rule came in....reverse swing has gone out of picture and bowlers like Gul, Wahab and Malinga have suffered.

Was a great LOI bowler but he was not the same after the 2011, was such a burden on the team since he would get hit for boundaries every over. Had a few match winning games in T20's against SA, India and England but was very forgettable. Never grew up watching him before 2011 so I can't say much about him since I've seen his decline.

Still do not forgive him for his bowling to Sehwag

Umer Gul is still playing? :))

Was an epic bowler back in the day and undoubtedly the best t20 pacer in history. I doubt any other pacer comes remotely close to his t20 ICC ranking. He was a very good one day bowler too.

He struggled in tests but then so do even the best bowlers in the game when it comes to the no-swing, no-movemenr Pakistani pitches. Had he been English, his test career may have been a different story.

He couldn’t swing the new ball. Wouldn’t have made it in England either with the same skill-set.

Gul had a very good Limited Overs career but failed to live up to the hype overall. Back in 2003-2004, he was considering to be a potential great Test bowler and made an instant impression with a match-winning 5 wicket haul in his second Test against India on a dead Lahore wicket in 2004.

His Test career never kicked on from then.

I don’t agree that he is the greatest T20 pacer. Malinga has done more in the format. Gul is right up there though.

Thank you Umer Gul for the memories

During his peak he was a joy to watch love this performence during t20 World Cup 2009 and even in 2007 t20 when he got Dhoni out was epic

However my most fond memory of Umar Gul was his batting performence against South Africa world t20 2012 group stage match Pakistan was losing that match and Gul came in and changed everything scoring 32 off 17

Really good white ball bowler and one of the best pacers ever at T20 level. Never had any disciplinary issues, conducted himself exceptionally well everywhere and was a great ambassador of the game overall. I think he could have achieved much more in tests but injuries impacted around peak years impacted his career a lot.

Pakistan could have defended the WT20 title in 2010 if he didn’t miss the tournament due to injury. It was a massive blow.

Gul was an exceptional timer of the ball. His batting potential was never tapped into.

He’s one of the rare Pakistani players who upped their performances in ICC events. Usually our players outputs in world events is lower than their overall career output

His bowling in the 2007-2011 period could be seriously quick(upto 95mph) and effective in white ball cricket. Once he lost that pace and the 2 new ball rule came into effect, his decline was shockingly quick. Will always rate peak Gul ahead of the likes of junaid etc simply for the pace and bounce he generated with a clean action.

Didn't have the skillset to succeed in Tests but he was an extremely good T20 bowler. I still remember the 17th over he bowled against SA in the 2009 semi-final. 6 yorkers dead on the money against Kallis and Duminy. He was at the peak of his bowling during that time.

Seems some like Aaqib Javed will be very happy with Gul and Imran retirements:

In an earlier interview he said:

“Umar Gul is in the Cricket Committee but also a part of a domestic team. Also, Faisal Iqbal and Imran Farhat made their debuts together. Now one is Balochistan’s coach and the other is still playing. What purpose do cricketers such as Umar Gul, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Talha and Imran Khan serve by playing domestic cricket"

Maybe someone should ask Aaqib, what purpose does Darren Stevens, Alastair Cook and until recently Graham Onions, Ian Bell & Marcus Trescothick serve by playing County Cricket?

Pacer Umar Gul has decided to retire from all forms of cricket after the conclusion of the National T20 Cup, scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 18, ARY Sports reported.

Will always have so much respect for him. The T20 09 Semi Final 19th over is arguably the most under-rated limited overs' over of Pakistan Cricket history.

Two things differentiated him in T20s:
1. Death over bowling
2. A winning mentality

As long as he was there for the final overs, Pakistan had a chance

I don't know if he will be able to transfer his skills to the next generation or fail utterly like Waqar has.

Someone should remind him that recently Salman Butt played in his Lahore Qalandars team.

Apart from his high pitched voice, I liked everything about this guy. He had a fine white ball career.

Overall a good ambassador for Pakistan cricket.

Both him and Wahab unfulfilled talents at Test level.

Should be remembered as a T20I pioneer. One of the few bowlers (Malinga, old action Narine) who could single handedly win a T20 match on his own at his peak.

Annihilation of NZ in 2007 WT20 and 2004 Test vs India probably his finest moments

Small mention for his role in 2006 Eng test series. Manfully led the least talented Pak attack to tour England across 4 tests against very good batting side on very flat pitches with almost nil support. Didn't moan, throw tantrums, undermine captain, fake injuries or get into controversy. No small achievement for Pak fast bowler of 00s.

I don't know about that HA in champions trophy
Amir, Wahab, SSA were great in world cup but bad in series

Batsman yeah I get it but bowlers I am not so sure...

We as a team our outperforming in ICC tournament from 2015 WC to 2019 WC just look at the record

4/37 today vs Central Punjab - leaving a little goodbye present for PCB Selectors!

In 2014, it looked like he was getting back to his best till he got injured in the mcc game, he was never the same bowler after that and his jump became less forceful at the crease as if he was trying not to apply maximum force on the knee. This contributed to a loss of 10-15 km/hr and he was never the same bowler again.

I wonder who messed up his rehab

Despite his wickets the other day, he just looked slow and tired today, lumbering back to his mark. No real pace in his deliveries any more. It really is time for him to retire now.

Yes he is retiring after national cup

15 out of these 35 WT20 wickets were taken on yorker/full length bowled and lbws. Every single one was a treat to watch.

Hope Guldozer is enjoying retirement.

Be like Gul in life and not Misbah Ul Haq.
I met Umar Gul at centaurs mall in Islamabad once. Dude was chilling, enjoying shopping and I even took a picture with him.

Kamal ka player tha. I'm so glad that he represented Pakistan for us. This man was our finest t20 bowler but he also understood that retirement means retirement .

A rate and genuinely good bloke, doesn’t need sound bites or develop some type of fake personality to get over. The guy is way too humble about his career and success to, he probably doesn’t realise how many of us support him and what he did for us. He does a bit here and there now but doesn’t make it all about himself, not surprised in the least you had a good moment with him

The pakistani players I've met irl include Shahid Afridi, Wasim Akram, Mohammad yousaf and Umar gul.

Wasim akram was an okay meet, he was basically standing in an auditorium taking pics and making it about himself and enjoying celebrity fame.

Afridi I met in a restraunt and he was okay, he said Salam, met me and everyone who lined up to meet and signed an autograph and that's it.

Mohammad yousaf and Umar gul were the nicest. Unar gul was shopping with his family and many did notice him, and approached. When I approached he and I had a very cool conversation and infact he was the one who suggested I take a picture qith him and his family and did an amazing pose.

Mohammad yousaf I met while he was shopping as well, funny enough unlike the other 3, no one recognised him except me, I went up to him and asked him if he was Mohammad yousaf and he smiled and said yes. We also had a wholesome conversation.

The thing is when you meet people irl you can easily tell who's genuine and who's fake, heck you can tell how fake nice and frauds babar, rizwan and misbah are.

Umar gul and yousaf were the only people who gave me the vibe of yes we are celebrities but we are also normal people. Fakhar zaman is also such and such on media.

Whereas with babar, Rizwan and misbah it's all LOOK AT ME IM FAMOUS, REVEL IN MY GLORY!!!.

Thanks for sharing this am not surprised by these experiences they sound about right. I’ve met a few in my time defo got that vibe from Wasim Akram though he was pleasant enough, I was just grateful to be in the presence of a legend however at least with him it is justified and the guy has an aura, he was struggling a bit with health etc but still probably fitter then most Pakistani sports chaps. Other then them two, Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi at a Charity event, Afridi was a decent guy but left early because he didn’t feel enough money was raised which I found hilarious 🤣 Younis is the nicest bloke I’ve ever met in cricket. A friend once worked in a Cinema in Brum and told me some cricketer showed up, he was staring and smiling at him with big teeth and sort of introduced himself:

‘Hellooo you know me”

Friend was like nope ha

“I cricket, I Kamran Akmal”

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

He got Azam’s blood unfortunately. And you are spot on both Babar and Ris probably want their fans to bathe in their sweat, and Misbah is basically the Hulk Hogan of Pakistan Cricket, his ego is just on another level

Deserves a hell of a lot more respect worldwide too.

Probably the greatest T20i fast bowler.

Malinga gets more plaudits because he played IPL but in my eyes he's inferior to the Guldozer.

Nothing beats watching Guldozer bowl in the UK with an electric atmosphere and Bumble on commentary. He created so many magic moments and the epitome of a high impact bowler, beautiful action, great speed, accuracy and aura. I would go out on a limb and say it was almost as exciting to watch Guldozer as it was Shoaib Akhtar, or the equivalent at least.

I mean their all obviously going to be nice in public, no one wants to get arrested or gain extra attention.

The point Is you can just tell who's genuine and who isn't. For example Misbah will act calm, cool and composed but the moment someone manages to expose his true colors you will get meltdows such as his infamous interview of

KYA MEI CHOCKEI NAHI MARTA.

It's the same with rizwan as well, he'll act fake nice but will eventually expose certain things here and their talking about how he values himself more then his own teammates.

And tbh it's not just him, certain Indian players like kohli, even David Warner let their mask slip and you get to see their true colors. Pat Cummings especially is the definition of ego.

However as I said, you can tell who's wholesome. In Pakistan atm its fakhar zaman who's shariff. In Australia its no one really, their all ego heads although jake fraser looks wholesome and a good kid, in India dhonibwas very wholesome, KL Rahul is also very shariff etc etc.

However Misbah and babar are defo the worst, mainly because unlike the other's these 2 don't have any tameez, they'll have literal meltdowns the moment you pressure them a bit, Imam ul haq as well. The others are able to suppress their anger and be passive aggressive and mostly chill.
