USA (197/3) defeat Canada (194/5) by 7 wickets in the opening game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024

The Partnership is now worth 107(46). Brilliant stuff from USA and what is this guy Jeremy GOrdon doing??? SO many extras and also getting smoked on his legal delivery. SHould just try to end his over and keep quiet.

earlier that missed run out chance by Saad and now this over by Gordon :(

This guy gave away 33 runs in his 3rd over of the spell. Worst possible thing that you should not do as a bowler.

Terrible captaincy by Saad, brought Dutta in that 9th over and then Pargat when he himself should have bowled.

wanted to say that he should have bowled with better bowlers in those middle overs, but what can I say when he himself and Gordon who are the most experienced players from our side bowled very poorly.

What an absolute blinder of an inning by Aaron Jones 94* off just 40 balls to win the game for his country.

If usa can manage to beat either ind or pak - it can get really interesting! Take a bow Aaron jones- what a knock!! Wow ten 6s- a record in a t20wc. But Canada's bowling and fielding was atrocious though

Pakistan should be scared of this USA side. These guys have nothing to loose TBH. Could upset Pakistan.

Stat alert:

Jones and Gous scored 131 runs together at an impressive rate of 14.29 runs per over, which is the highest run-rate ever recorded for a partnership of 100 or more runs in the tournament.

is it going to be "win the toss and always bowl first in USA" going forward?

The gulf in the bowling attack is too huge though. But of it's one of those bad pak days- then who knows. But boy what a chase. Usa was 50-2 in 8 overs and they finished it with 2 overs to spare. USA captain monank patel though needs some introspection. That was a horrible opening knock that he played..

Nope. Canada had the game in the bag and they choked totally..
Yes, I think they were ahead after 8 overs but they let it slip through. But What an inning Aaron has played. Totally took the game away from Canada along with Gous.

Wet ball plays a role. But the outfield is much faster than what we have in New York. Easy to fluke boundaries.

Absolute domination over Canada. I guess Canada needs to import a couple of Saffers and Jamaicans themselves

This is where i point out to you that Aaron Jones was not born in Jamaica. He was born in New York City. He may have spent his developmental years in the Carribbean, but he's a US citizen by birth and thus it would be unfair to call him an import.

Jones the hero as scintillating knock helps USA to victory in T20 World Cup opener

From 48/2 in pursuit of 195 at one stage, USA went on to take the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 opener with 14 balls to spare.

A stunning 94* from 40 balls from Aaron Jones, inclusive of 10 sixes and four fours, helped by a brilliant 65 from Andries Gous led USA to a seven-wicket win in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Canada.

Toss: USA won the toss and elected to bowl first

Left-arm seamer Kaleem Sana gave Canada the perfect start, dismissing the dangerous Steve Taylor for a duck. Andries Gous joined skipper Monank Patel, and the duo tried to up the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries.

Canada, however, maintained discipline with the ball and soon struck again with Monank's wicket. The batter fell a run-a-ball 16 while trying to take on Dillon Heyliger. A 19-run over against Nikhil Dutta, featuring a six each for Andries Gous and Aaron Jones, helped pick the USA rate up. Jones continued to attack, hitting Canada skipper Saad Bin Zafar for a six and a four in the 10th over.

The duo continued going for their shots, and pumped up the USA scoring rate. From 81/2, USA added 45 runs over the next three overs. Jones hit three sixes off Saad in the 13th over, reaching the fastest T20I fifty for his side in the same over, from merely 22 balls. Gous reached a fifty off his own in the next over, and survived a scare after he hit one straight to Dilpreet off Gordon, but the pacer had bowled a no-ball. His partner, Jones took advantage of the free hit and hit his eighth six off the next ball. The duo brought up their 100-run stand off merely 45 balls.

Gous fell after a well-made 65, but by then USA were well ahead in the chase. Jones remained unbeaten for 94* from 40 balls, leading USA to a comfortable seven-wicket win.

Aaron Johnson smashed the very first ball of the tournament over extra cover, setting the tone for Canada's powerplay approach. His partner Navneet Dhaliwal got a four off his own in the very next over, but it was Johnson who took the charge for his side. He hit USA's Ali Khan for three boundaries in the third over and Canada were off to a flier.

It was Harmeet Singh who got the dangerous Johnson, when the right-hander tried to hit the slow left-arm spinner towards the cow corner but instead found Nitish Kumar in the deep. Pargat Singh's run out soon after gave the hosts another wicket.

Dhaliwal found good support in Nicholas Kirton and the duo set about reconstructing the Canadian innings. Dhaliwal brought up the first fifty of the tournament in the 12th over. Kirton got into the act soon after, hitting a six and a four against Shadley Van Schalkwyk to lift the run rate.

The experienced Corey Anderson got into the game thereafter, getting rid off Dhaliwal with his first delivery and then taking a sharp catch to dismiss the set Nicholas Kirton in the 18th over to give USA a boost. Six-filled cameos from Shreyas Movva (32* from 16) and Dilpreet Bajwa (11 from 5) then helped Canada take 35 off the final two overs.

Fair enough. Unfortunately we looked like a club level team after the first 8 overs. Missed an easy run out chance, dropped easy catches, did not know where to place fielders and Gordon totally lost the game in that 14th over.

He learnt his cricket in the Caribbean ?

Yeah I thought it was over by 8 overs and it was like a switch flipped. Complete u turn. Fielding was in shambles and that Gordon over he completely lost his radar.

Really amateur bowling from Canada. Most of the bowlers are in their late 30’s, and clearly not international material.

All the records from USA’s milestone triumph over Canada at T20 World Cup

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 co-hosts USA had a spectacular debut as they secured a solid seven-wicket win over Canada.

Aaron Jones’ brilliant 90* led USA to a confident win over their neighbours Canada, in what was the debut T20 World Cup match for both sides.

A number of records were broken during this clash and we take a look at the major ones to fall.

Third highest successful run chase in a Men’s T20 World Cup game

Jones’ quickfire 94* along with Andries Gous’ fighting 65 helped USA overcome Canada’s ask of 195 in merely 17.4 overs. This was the third-highest successful run chase in Men’s T20 World Cups, and the highest ever by an Associate team.

Equal second most sixes in a T20 World Cup innings

After a relatively sedate start, Jones hit his first six in the ninth over delivered by Nikhil Dutta. There was no stopping the right-hand batter after that, as he went after both seamers and spinners in an innings that featured 10 sixes.

These 10 hits equalled the number of sixes Chris Gayle had hit in the inaugural game of the very first T20 World Cup back in 2007. Gayle would go on to break his own record nine years later in 2016, but Jones now has the joint second-most sixes in an innings of a T20 World Cup game, Men’s or Women’s.
