What's new

Usman Khawaja

Out for 80 this morning. Got a few mentions in the papers this morning.

"one of those players who seems to have a lot of time"

"stylish left hander"

Usman Khawaja top scored for NSW today...scoring 132 not out batting at number 3 against Queensland as NSW scored 5/451(dec). His 3rd century to go with his 4 fifties in 23 innings

Usman hit his 4th FC century against the reigning champions Victoria over the weekend.

Now has 4 100, 4 50's from 16 Matches at an average of 47.33.

Cheers Pakistan! :D

He's averaging nearly 50 across 20 First Class games now. Future talent. :inzi

CS: What about the batting talent?
AH: Our planning goes several years past [next summer] to the 2013 Ashes, and I don't think I have seen the young talent coming through healthier. There are three or four batters who aren't in the team at the moment who will definitely have an impact.

CS: Who are they?
AH: I'll miss someone out if I name names, but we're very pleased with where Usman Khawaja is at.

Born in Pakistan, Usman Khawaja moved to Australia when he was a young boy and is aiming to become the first Muslim to play for the country. A fine left-handed batsman who was a national under-19 representative, Khawaja delivered on the rave reviews during his second season with the Blues by posting 554 runs at 42.61, including two centuries. New South Wales were in the desperate trouble of 4 for 88 at the Gabba when Khawaja stepped in with his maiden century and he followed his 112 with 172 not out in the final game of the season. Currently more suited to the longer format, he played his first two one-day matches, scoring 9 and 45.

Khawaja was picked for three first-class games with New South Wales in 2007-08, impressing on debut with an 85 that almost earned first-innings points. He finished the summer with a state average of 32.33 and a growing reputation, which was enhanced by 1134 runs for the Randwick Petersham club. While cricket is his love, Khawaja is also training to become a pilot.

This guy is averaging close to 50 in Australian Domestic, and recently picked as a back up batsman for series agaisnt Pakistan. We need to get this guy playing for Pakistan, just like England does.

Why would he play for Pakistan? a bad series and he will have having his future in doldrums. same applies to Imran tahir unfortunately.

Not to mention that he would most definitely be warming the bench, as the 'seniors' would have to play way past their sell-by date.

While some might argue that there are no seniors left in the team, I bet the likes of Umar Akmal are starting to think of themselves as seniors already. While I have nothing against the lad, sadly this is the culture and mentality of our cricketers.

this guy doesnt like pakistan at alllllllllllll............stop dreaming about him playing for pakistan...................though if he changes his mind...........we have found a very very solid left handed batsman.......................unlike misbah, hafeez and co

Or he can wait until he's 30 to be a regular in the Aussie side, I know he's been selected as backup, but you know half their team would have to be wiped out for him to get a game, and he's only there because of one or two injuries already.

When the family moved from Islamabad to Sydney, Khawaja was three. His father Tariq continued to support Pakistan but gradually switched allegiances to Australia as his son moved through the ranks. There have been semi-regular trips back to Pakistan, but Khawaja never considered playing for the country of his birth.

"Even if they [Pakistan] came calling, there was never a chance of me going there anyway," he said. "Ever since I was young I've been loyal to Australia and all I've ever wanted to do is represent Australia and get that baggy green. The thought never even crossed my mind. Australia feels like home, so I don't think it would be right."

Erm it's a no no!!!

If guys like Naveed Yasin, Asad Shafiq, Mohammed Irfan, Usman Qadir etc can find a way to play for any country other than Paksitan ... they should.

In Pakistan, players pull each other's leg ... if they dont, someone within the board does. Pakistan is not the place for even an ordinary guy to live, let alone professional sportsmen!

He's getting paid more playing domestic cricket in Australia than he would get playing internationals for Pakistan lol.

Imran Tahir still can't find a place in the SA first team.

Hope he plays this summer against us. Will be treat watching him face Asif & co. I'm sure Asif and Afridi will have plenty to say to him

He was about to be selected against England in January, however he was not RSA qualified under the ICC regulations. Therefore, he is going to have to wait until November this year in order to be able to play for them !!

I believe he is in their plans. Its just a matter of waiting.

Top bowler is Imran sahab.... :danish (better than him !)

No, never going to happen BECAUE:

- Pakistan have plenty of its own that needs to be selected.

- Usman Khawaja is an Australian, so, he should play for his country, period.

Just wanting to play for the country where he grew up does not mean he doesn't like Pakistan.

He Lives in Australia
He Grew Up in Australia
He never went back to pakistan(as far as i know)
He never wants to play for Pakistan

He is Aussie Boys Guys

and yet you think he likes Pakistan.........

Khawaja is an Australian, but then there's 'World XI England' so if being born or a parent is needed to represent a country then I don't see any issue him playing for Pakistan.

I personally would prefer to see him play for only Australia since he grew up there and earned his bread & butter from there.

Well, if he ever fails to make the Aussie team....there is a slight possibility he may play for Pak seeing as it could be his only chance at international cricket (much like Ed Joyce). I imagine, if he did have a mediocre career...he still probably be better than our batsmen so I say we can just wait and hope :P

Growing up in Australia, I'm sure it wasn't his decision.

Why would he go back to Pakistan if his whole family is in Australia?

Why would he want to play for Pakistan if he wasn't born there, lived there or even been there?

Does NOT mean he dislikes Pakistan.

We had a poster here who I think posted in this thread who knew Khawaja and said he was a true blue integrated Australian, who doesn't even consider himself Pakistani.

:13: :13:
that shows he doesnt LIKE EITHER

so if he is happy to play for Australia....Good On Him....I fully support him.............I would rather watch him playing for Australia and make a strong Career rather than playing for a Disfunctional and Plagued with Politics team called PAKISTAN

Best of luck to Usman.

However, as much as he tries, I doubt he'll "fit in" the Australian squad. He may have fit in well with the English and South African sides, but it's very rare that you get "ethnics" in the Australian side, and his inclusion will probably cause some stir up. Let's hope he does fit in well though, for the sake of his career.

I say this because I've lived in Aus for the past 20 years, and have played for three local cricket clubs and I know for certain - no matter how 'true blue' you present yourself, you'll never be considered "one of the lads". He'll always be "that Pakistani kid".

Anyway, good luck to him. Hope to see him on the international stage soon.

Andrew Symonds is the only one I can recall. So Usman will be a pioneer in some sense. I think they will go out of their way to make him fit in actually. Especially since he is already teammates with half the side as a NSW player.

You are right about local cricket clubs but the Aussie cricket team is a bit of a more professional outfit that a local cricket team.

So long as he makes some runs in the A games I think he will be on the plane. Stephen Smith would be next in lin for the number 6 spot though, Usman will need injury to get into the Test team.

On a side note, we now have 3 players 21y/o or thereabouts pushing for or playing Test cricket. Hughes, Khawaja and Smith. Hopefully the dark era of Australian cricket is over and we can get back to flogging everyone for another decade. :)

According to cricinfo he was actually born in Pakistan.

Scored a ridiculous 175* today in Sheffield Shield, hopefully can convert to a double or possible treble tomorow. If bloody North didn't get the hundred yesterday he would've been very very close to being selected in the Ashes.

looks like he could be the next Aussie batting star. might miss out on the Ashes because North got his hundred and they don't have the cojones to drop any of the others, but his chance will come. looking forward to seeing him play.

I dont think Usman Khawaja will ever play for Aus...they are not diverse liek UK....Aussie selector,Hilditch already said Ferozsons,White are next in line for test team...

Well i was not holding Flag to hit him :jm, but i just didnt like his attitude of ignoring.

He probably thought i was gona ask him that he is a Pakistani and how he feels playing for Aussies etc etc which clearly was not my intention.

I have met probably all Aussie player and they are all great , specially Gilly , i like him he is my favorite

Anyways Good luck to him , he is a good player but as a person i would neverhave him in my favourites

He ignored YOU and from that you deduced that he HATES Pakistan? Way to go Columbo

btw did you read the Khawaja interview on PakPassion? Actually hold on, I must have imagined that, why would he give an interview to PakPassion since he HATES Pakistan :13:

I was NOT alone and had few other Pakistanis with me who actually persuaded me to talk to this guy , and i wouldn't give a **** to him if he likes me or not or ignores me .Its actually the FLAG which alarmed him and i didn't like that probably i was carrying the wrong flag for him.

You obviously haven't met him and so you are judgment is totally based on what you HEAR

Yes, Im sure the "FLAG" scared him, yep that is what it was :ibutt

He is a not a Pakistani national ....why some Pak ppl consider him as a Pakistani ..
Whatever he will do right/wrong will be associated with Aussies not Pakistan ....

and he already stated in his interview that he is pure Aussie ..so no point in thinking otherwise..

Khawaja was born in Pakistan...thats why.....BTW...why ind ppl call Bobby Jindal indian...he was not even born in Indus :fawad

I believe he thinks he is Aussie but the point if others think so as well?:asadrauf

point taken ...

but its all depend on Individual what he feel about himself .... If he think himself as a Aussie then even in his worst situation there he should act as a Aussie only ...same with every other Individuals who migrate from different countries to particular country and Yes the ppl from that country will take long to accept that for sure ..UK in that term is the best country IMO

Its a Political point of view but its Logical .... and varying opinion on this Topic ...but its all my Opinion only.

Khawaja was born in Pakistan...thats why.....BTW...why ind ppl call Bobby Jindal indian...he was not even born in Indus :fawad

Coz he himself proudly said he is an Indian-American but he is an American by Nationality......

and for your information we treat All NRIs in the same way .... If they associate themselves with India in some form or others......and we even have proper government policies & facilities to entertain them if only if they associate themselves with India ....

btw I don't know why I replied your post.....
