Usman Shinwari announces retirement from international cricket

Left-arm fast bowler Usman Khan Shinwari has announced his retirement from international cricket, having represented Pakistan in a one-off Test, 17 ODIs and 16 T20Is from December 2013 to December 2019.

Usman became Pakistan’s T20I cap 58, ODI cap 216 and Test cap 240 – all against Sri Lanka, in December 2013, October 2017 and December 2019, respectively. He was also part of the Pakistan squad in the ACC Men’s ODI Asia Cup in 2018.

31-year-old left-arm pacer picked up a solitary Test scalp, while he accounted for 34 ODI and 13 T20I wickets. His best bowling performances include two ODI five-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka - 5-34 in 2017 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium and 5-51 in 2019 at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi.

They did him dirty in odi. Bowled phenomenal in every odi spell he was given an opportunity to bowl in

What a tool.

Usman Shinwari got stardom abit too early, which got to his head and which is why he has hanged his boots at 31.

Now lets roll back to 2012.

In the pakistani cricket circuit, Usman Shinwari was making a name for himself. Rumor at the time was that this is a Amir type bowler who can swing the ball both ways. Few coaches mentioned his name as someone to look out for.

Than PCB held a departmental t20 cup. In that tournament SNGPL under Misbah was dominating in matches and were looking to win the tournament, until they came across Shinwari on a dead wicket.

Shinwari, who had been hyped up every where, was generating banana swing, the kind we saw from Anwar Ali in that famous u19 final against India. Sngpl had hafeez, ali waqas, Misbah and a few other international level players that all faltered to Shinwari. It was televised matcy

After that i think it was Najem Sethi or Zaka Ashraf that wanted Shinwari added to the t20 team or maybe it was Misbah. Anyways, Hafeez was captain, he had an issue that why he was being told to add a player.

Shinwari did not do himself any favors, as he had made big statements after that match where he was dissing the players.

Eventually Shinwari gets added, Hafeez used him for a few overs, didnt like what he was bowling so removed him from the attack. This move wasnt appreciated by the pcb management and directly warned hafeez that you will bowl him no matter what.

Hafeez got pissed and than he not only played Shinwari in every game, he made sure Shinwari bowled his full qouta of overs irrespect of how many runs the guy leaked.

After the series, the PCB was left red faced and Hafeez had made his point. The guy who suffered was Shinwari.

Shinwari bowled well in odi series, but he was too wayward. Leaked runs and was another Mohammad Sami.

Mickey Arthur recognized the flaw in Shinwari, and even though, during that year Shinwari was the highest wicket taker but Arthur did not select Shinwari for the 2019 world cup and instead went with Wahab Riaz and Shaheen Afridi.

This is where the concept of qualitative data comes into place. Even though based on quant Shinwari was the best, but anyone watch him bowl knew he was flawed. This is just like the Aamir Jamal case who was the highest wicket taker in the test series was Australia, but qualitative data showed he was bowling all over the pitch and the opposition wasnt that good.

Plus, Arthur turned out to be right as Shaheen and Wahab both bowled well in that world cup.

After that world cup, shinwari lost it he thought he was mistreated. In the psl, he sucked even further and even though he played under Sarfraz but he was just not good enough.

Shinwari at the end thought the world was against him, instead of admitting he had issues in his bowling, plus the guy had an ego from the start of his career just like Mohammad Harris has one.

Shinwari should had just played domestic cricket and club while improving on his bowling. He has hanged his boots to early and just gave up and proved that he dint really put in the hours required to be a top cricketer.

Sami was the same case. But Sami made a name for himself at Islamabad United and even got more international matches in his late 30s cause Sami did improve and showed that he could bowl with good pace in t20 cricket.

Agree to disagree. Not about shinwari but about jamal. Opposition was good, but aus just had a brain fade moment vs him. It was just one of those off days for that series

Remember the hype in the early 2010s, one of the many "could he replace Amir ?" candidates (left arm and decent pace), like Junaid Khan, who also had been underutilized in ODIs like Shinwari.

Though JK was more of a seam bowler and Usman swing bowler.

He could be expensive but I think should have been given more chances as he could produce those match changing spells.

Why so many ppl join tableegh he could take up coaching role or commentator role which would help kids or youngsters

Inzamam, Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq are three high profile examples of joining tablighi jamaat but continuing coaching. The only profile that stopped with cricket altogether is Saeed Anwar.

That one spell in a domestic game when he got Misbah, Taufiq Umar, Rizwan and Umar Akmal in one spell was one of the best swing bowling spells ever witnessed, not far behind Anwar Ali. Unplayable.
I have seen all of Imran, Waqar, Wasim, Shoaib, Asif etc but i dont think i ever saw someone swing the ball like he did that day. Maybe Wasim Akram/Waqar during ball tampering days produced similar swing.

Mickey Arthur selected Hasnain in the wc 19 squad ahead of Junaid and Shinwari and didn't even play him. It was a stupid stupid decision by Mickey.

It's good if he's found solace in religion. Best wishes for him.
He could also go into coaching if he attains coaching experience and qualifications. The dearth of good coaches in Pakistan is evident.
Had a fragile body. Can't really blame him.

Usman Khan Shinwari, lacked control and gave away too many easy runs (which never works in International cricket). Many Pakistani pacer do this like Wahab Riaz, Haris Rauf and many other who just bowl hard and fast like the pace or bounce alone will help them contain the opposition. This might work against lower grade batsmen at domestic level. But top class batters will work you out and will hit you all over the ground. A international level Batter will know how many kind of deliveries you bowl the more variety you have, more respect you will get from him. If you just bowl 3 kind of deliveries and throw loose balls with regularity, they will shred you to pieces.

Features in the list of all-time mindless decisions in sports.

Picking undercooked Hasnain over experienced Junaid and developing Usman was poor decision making. Not playing Hasnain then in a single game just proved what a bad idea it was to begin with.

Hasnain essentially occupied a spot, an option we were never going to exercise.

He last played international cricket in 2019. What’s the point of players like Shinwari announcing international retirement as if they are regular players for Pakistan?
