Damn, Sachin was ready for big things so early.

I hope this inspires Babar Azam & Rizwan to do the same today. Prayers and best wishes from #AsianBloc fans are with Babar and Rizwan.

He should have retired after Wc,his test avg would have been above 55.

He always belonged in our test XI until his retirement. Just wasn't our premier batsman in last couple of years of his career but that doesn't mean he didn't belong.

His final average is to be seen keeping firmly in mind it is for 200 tests played in 24 years. It's not like he scored 7000 runs at 53-54, he scored 16,000 almost. It's an incredibly.good average for that long a career.

"17"

I remember reading about Rahul Draviding complaining about age fudging in Indian cricket

It's absurd to think Tendulkar's age was fudged. There's no way he could have maintained his level of performance over so long if he wasn't his stated age. In fact, it's incredible enough even with it.

Say what you want, that's not a 17 year old kid, no way!

He was 16 when he debuted. Wasim said he looked 14.

There is no age fudging in Sachin's case. He came straight from the school. It's an open story. His life is well-documented year by year..

If anything being toooo young went against Sachin for even earlier selection in squad for West Indies tour in 1988/89.

Mumbai cricket and BCCI had meetings to discuss what to do with this young child prodigy. Many people were against picking a 14 year old to play first class cricket who would later debut for India at 16.

He was probably 18-19 maybe even 20. Some people look younger than their age. People used to think I looked 15-16 when I was 20-22. So Sachin could've easily benefitted from age fudging which according to Dravid was commonplace in Indian cricket and I've heard it's pretty common in Bollywood too especially with the age of female actors.

His career is very easy to track right from an early age. Almost from his birth and each milestone with dates. He was always considered a prodigy and his coaches have records

Records and Sachin Tendulkar are synonymous in international cricket. The ‘Master Blaster’ has accumulated almost every run-scoring record possible in the game while etching his name into the ‘Mount Rushmore’ of cricket. Tendulkar is the highest run-getter in both Tests and ODIs while also being the first man to hit hundred international centuries. Sachin is also the first cricketer to score a double hundred in the 50-over format.

However, there was a time when the scoring a century was a new experience for Sachin Tendulkar. Just a year after making his debut, 17-year-old Sachin was in the thick of things as India fought to save the Test match against England.

Test-saving hundreds have become extinct now but Sachin carved out one such innings exactly 30 years ago, the seeds of which were sown during one afternoon in Sialkot, eight months prior to that gloomy Manchester day.

It was on August 14, 1990, that Tendulkar scored the first of his 100 international centuries, a majestic 119 not out on a fifth day track to save the game for India.

Asked about that special first, and it seemed like yesterday.

“I scored that 100 on August 14 and next day was our Independence Day, so it was special. The headline was different and that hundred at least kept the series alive till next Test at the Oval,” Tendulkar told PTI on the eve of the 30th anniversary of his first ton.

So what exactly was the feeling, apart from the pure joy of achieving the milestone?

“The art of saving a Test match was a new experience for me,” Tendulkar said but added he knew he could save a game when he batted with a “bloodied nose” and a blood-soaked jersey after being hit by Waqar Younis.

“In Sialkot where I got hit and scored 57, we saved that Test match, too, from 38 for 4. Waqar’s bouncer and playing through pain defined me. After those kind of hits you are either stronger or you are nowhere to be seen.”As scary as it may seem now, Tendulkar, in the first innings of that Manchester match, was hit on the back of the head by one of the fastest pacers in the world back then, Devon Malcolm.

“Devon and Waqar, during that phase, were easily the two quickest bowlers in the world bowling at 90 mph.”Yes, I didn’t call the phsyio as I didn’t want to show them that I am in pain. My pain threshold was fairly high. It’s okay to get hit. So what. You don’t show your pain to the bowler,” the legend said.

Coach Ramakant Achrekar prepared him for all sorts of pain by making him play on the same pitch for 25 days straight at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana.

“I was used to getting hit on my body from my days in Shivaji Park as Achrekar sir would make us play on that and it would have enormous wear and tear.”The same pitch we played a match on one day and next day we were back for nets. So balls would just jump off length and hit my nose.

“In fact, I would just throw the ball up and take it on my body to absorb the pain.”Back to the match, the shots that he remembers are the exquisite backfoot cover drives off Chris Lewis deliveries that darted in.

“Lewis bowled sharp inswing and throughout my career, backfoot cover drive had been my favourite shot.

“The bowler who was the best by far in that series was Angus Fraser. He had a beautiful late outswing, high arm action, so ball would bounce and move so late that you had to play at it.”It was a case of showing patience and credit to Manoj that we had a 160-run stand,” he said.

Did he feel in the last hour that the team has been able to save the match.

“No way till the last over. We came together when we were six down (183/6) but me and Manoj together said ‘yeh hum kar sakte hain, match bacha lenge’ (we can save the match).

“Also England had attacking field as they could only win from that position,” Tendulkar said.

And any special anecdote that he still remembers?

”Well I was 17 and the Man of The Match was presented with a bottle of champagne. Neither did I drink and also I hadn’t reached the legal age for drinking. My senior teammates would tell me ‘what would you do with it’,” he laughed.

But there is another thing that Tendulkar fondly remembers to this day.

“Sanjay Manjrekar presented me a white shirt which was a gift for scoring a hundred. I was really touched,” he concluded.

If that is true then he hit the first ever ODI double at nearly 40. At 41 he was toying with Dale Styen in South Africa hitting two sublime test centuries and Retired by 44 facing Tino Best and co. Still impressive.

Tendulkar came from a middle class Bombay family.

No age fudging with him.

Need to keep an eye on the rural types sprouting up these days though.

LOL he was no 17 he looks 19-20 atleast. He fudged the age.Age fudging is quite common practice in subcontinent.

You probably know a lot more about Bollywood than a lot more Indians so I will leave it you as that’s not my area of expertise but Sachin was not born in some remote village in an opium farm in KPK or something . He was born in Mumbai, one of the biggest cities in the world.

Age Fudging happens in India of course but it happens in small towns or remote areas like in Pakistan.

I personally don’t care if Sachin was 2-3 years over age but Sachin being from Mumbai and from a middle class family, unfortunately that reduces the chances for age fudging. You probably have a view of Mumbai from what they tell you in Pakistan but trust me it’s a pretty big city with a lot of processes in place.

This is actually the first time I have seen anyone questioning Sachin's age :)))

Consensus always was he looked more 14 than 16 :yk

And Sachin used to speak good enough English even at age of 15.

Lol, people debating whether he was aged 17 when he played this innings.

That shows the genius of the man when you don't have anything else to discuss rather than blabbering about his age.

Btw, this is the first time someone is casting aspersions on his age.

Say what you want, that's not a 17 year old kid, no way!

His age is not fudged. Even if it is, that is even more incredible as it would mean that he continued to be one of the best bats in the world into his mid 40's

LOl Sachin age fudging. He's the one guy who wasn't doing it.

:)) Exactly. Since they have no other way to put him down.

Iam a critic of Tendulkar but I can tell you he never fudged his age.
If that's the case as freelance_cricketer aka Bhaijaan told he was scoring centuries for fun in his early 40's.

Warne was saying on Sky Sports earlier that when he saw Sachin playing for the first time, he thought he was around 10 years old :srt

Warne is master of hyperboles.

If anything however, he looked underage at least during his first decade in international cricket.

If he had retired after WC his average would have been 56.94 in 177 test matches.

which is what would be the benchmark for any batsmen till 177 tests... 56.94

Until someone has an average of 54 after 201 tests, Sachin's average remains the 'BEST' for 200 test matches.

I don't rate Steve Smith unless he scores 10,000 runs at the same avg as he is now.

He's up there but he has to have at least 10,000 runs to even be considered Top 10 let alone how some rate him in top 5, even 3 , some even say 2nd best to Bradman. Makes no sense making such statements now when the guy is still playing
