Whenever you see Wasim Akram bowling in these kind of exhibition matches, he is always swinging the ball more than others and inevitably getting wickets.

I hate to say it but what a waste of a talent - any other top 4 country and he would have had 700 test wickets and his team would be winning everything in sight.

1992-1996 when he had waqar were still at peak PCB decided to play more odi's then tests that put a dent on his and waqar final numbers .
Post 97 home season when he was diagnosed with diabetes he lost his consistency in test cricket he would have a great series then go missing in the next 2 .

By 1999-2000, Wasim had more or less given up on test cricket and wanted to focus on ODIs. He even withdrew himself from test matches from 2002 onwards. He probably missed 15-20 test matches for Pakistan from 1999 to the end of his career

The pakistani players are partly to blame for all their shenanigans during this period and pcb the way they mishandled them and didnt market their cricket

Wasim only played 70 tests from 1985-1996 And after 1996 about 34

Wasim was a huge talent, I wouldnt say his stats are underwhelming but he shouldve had better figures in the end

Pcb missed a huge trick not prioritising test cricket for their players during the 90s

It’s naturally built into him.
There is no way he can unlearn it.

He will be swinging it even if he bowls at the age of 90 years.

From Aug 92- Jan 94 we played just 4 test matches this was the time the teams had no clue how to handle reverse they got a bit better at it by 95 onwards had we played another 8-10 tests during this period both W would have picked atleast 40-50 more test match wickets

Yes he was 30 official probably 32 by 96 and had crossed his peak with more regular test cricket during his real peak 89-95 should have been the first pacer to cross 500 mark.

His record is still outstanding but similar to Viv Richards you look at the numbers and feel some more was left on the table given the skill level.

Every time there is a video on Michael Atherton he comes out as the loser.

How England anointed this Aakash Chopra type player as a legend, giving him 100+ tests and captaincy is a question that has to be asked.

Because on the first point he was England’s best opener for years after Gooch retired, and on the second he was considered the right sort for captaincy (Manchester Grammar School, Cambridge University).

A test average of 37 in that era of fast bowling was decent for an opener who played half his tests in England. He declined in the last quarter of his career due to chronic back pain, yet right at the end was instrumental in Nasser’s win in Pakistan with two centuries in three tests.

Stewart was a better opener than Atherton, but England messed that strength up by making him keep wicket.

Athers was celebrated for his stubborn resistance - for example his 632-minute rearguard in SA, and his war with Donald in 1998. These evoke the English national myth of the dogged last-ditch defence - he was Henry at Agincourt, the Thin Red Line in the Crimea, Fighter Command in 1940. That’s why he was totemic.

...meanwhile the rest of the world were producing Matthew Hayden, Saeed Anwar, Gary Kirsten, Desmond Haynes etc. who had fantastic pedigree across Tests and ODIs both.

Athers averaged 38 while Chopra averaged 23 the style may have been same but this is like comparing Kohli with Yasir Hameed just because they are both similar free flowing cover drivers

You might as well say that Kapil was no good because he was around at the same time as Imran. But he was still India's best.
Athers was the best available for his national side at the time, which is why he played 100 tests and skippered in 53 of them.

Lol false equivalence. Sure IK might be better in terms of bowling talent and numbers no problem there but Kapil Dev won a WC as captain by 24, won series in England, scored the highest odi score for a while and also held the record for most test and odi wickets for a while. Sure, inconsistency, injuries etc took a toll on the numbers but in terms of impact Kapil is right up there and that’s why he is rated as one of the best allrounders ever.

You must be kidding comparing there pedigree and achievements of Kapil to a Snobby Posh Brit who was mediocre most of his career and has no significant achievements to speak of.

The old magic and skill is still there!. The girth has also grown in abundance too:jofra Waz bhai defo needs to lose weight for sure!:inzi2

I didn't. I compared Kapil to Imran.

It's great to see the two old Lancy mates play together again. Skippers Athers and Wasim buried the silly feud that had rumbled on between England and Pakistan since 1982.

Kapil was much better player then Athers.. I have to say whatever point you are trying to make is not working. You can compare Imran and Kapil however you would be comparing two giants of the game but you cant compare Athers to say hayden it would be an insult to hayden.

Atherton retired because of a chronic back condition. But he was tough and nails. Just look at the bowlers he faced i.e. Wasim, Waqar, Saqlain, Mushtaq Ahmed, Walsh, Ambrose, Pollock, Donald, Mcgrath, Gillespie, Lee, Warne, Vaas, Murlitharan. An avg of 38 against these bowlers is very respectable. He is held in high esteem by Donald who rated him as the most stubborn and brave batsman he ever bowled too.

Seems Wasim did not like comments about his weight etc....

As Geoffrey Boycott once said "Wasim and Waqar, they could bowl England out with an orange"

I remember seeing a coaching session Wasim did on Sky Sports a few years ago and he was swinging the ball more than most of the current Pakistani pacers at that time.

Natural ability - this sort of level of skill is not taught.

Athers may have been looking out for the bouncer.

In the 90's these two had some great battles. Athers was a tough batsmen to intimidate but Wasim managed it with his fiery pace.

Nice to see the greats of yesteryear coming together for a Warne charity match.

Does anyone have more footage of this match?

Seems Wasim did not like comments about his weight etc....

His weight issues have to do with Insulin.

Kapil was much better player then Athers.. I have to say whatever point you are trying to make is not working. You can compare Imran and Kapil however you would be comparing two giants of the game but you cant compare Athers to say hayden it would be an insult to hayden.

Facepalm.

I didn’t compare Atherton to Hayden.

Let’s see if I can use easier words.

If a player has fought hard for his country with success, it doesn’t matter that there are better players round the world, because he has still done well in a hard era and a hard place to bat, and is to be respected for that.

Atherton explains:

Lol false equivalence. Sure IK might be better in terms of bowling talent and numbers no problem there but Kapil Dev won a WC as captain by 24, won series in England, scored the highest odi score for a while and also held the record for most test and odi wickets for a while. Sure, inconsistency, injuries etc took a toll on the numbers but in terms of impact Kapil is right up there and that’s why he is rated as one of the best allrounders ever.

You must be kidding comparing there pedigree and achievements of Kapil to a Snobby Posh Brit who was mediocre most of his career and has no significant achievements to speak of.

whats wrong with Atherton?, averaging 38 as opener in toughest condition for opener, facing some of the greatest fast bowlers ever with courage?

Wasim or Alan Davidson.

Though the most destructive I have seen, when he got his mind right, was Mitchell Johnson.

Is there any doubt that Wasim was the greatest left arm pace bowler?

Just to add 2 pence, Atherton might have been average player, but he did not get much support from his team either. That particular English had no backbone, tbh

Gooch, Stewart, Robin Smith, Thorpe, Fraser, Russell, Gough, Caddick, Cork provided tons of backbone.

The problem was not being able to get the bowling unit fit very often, and having to use less-effective bowlers.

Also Illingworth made some odd selection decisions.

I think the treadmill of County cricket didnt help the england team performance at all too with players constantly on the road and bowlers overworked tired or injured reporting in to play a test match a day after finishing a county game and then going back to start a game as soon as the test match finished

A lot of english players during that era also just werent backed or instilled with any confidence or faith Most didnt know if they would be picked from one series to another They were constantly dropped and re picked to be dropped

And thats no way to build a top consistent squad

Gooch was at the fag end of his career when Atherton took over captaincy. Robin Smith and Thorpe and Gough were solid, but apart from that, the team was iffy. Didnt have stability. You had people Ramprakash, Hick and others who had talent, but could never translate it into performance.
