Context:

Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah was caught on camera using a slang word for New Zealand batsman Henry Nicholls on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test on Saturday.

The incident happened in the 77th over of New Zealand's innings, when Nichols tried to play a cut shot against Yasir but completely missed the line of the delivery. Yasir, who was desperate for a wicket, yelled in frustration and was caught using expletives for the New Zealand batsman.

Yasir Shah, Pakistan's only spinner in the playing XI, failed to take a wicket in 16 overs that he bowled. Nicholls failed to understand Shah's words, fans across the world were quick to notice it.

BJ Watling made an unbeaten half-century in a 66-run partnership with rising allrounder Kyle Jamieson as New Zealand tightened its grip on the first cricket test against Pakistan by tea on the second day.

Jamieson was out for 32 just before tea Sunday while Watling remained 59 not out. New Zealand was 388-7, batting first after losing the toss.

Earlier Sunday, Williamson made 129, his 23rd test century and his second in consecutive tests after his career-best 251 in the first test against the West Indies. Nicholls made 56, his tenth half-century which followed his 174 in the second West Indies test.

The pair shared their third-century partnership to bat New Zealand from 222-3 at the start of play to 266-3 when Nicholls was out before lunch.

Given my understanding of those words, IMO it's not as bad as some others popular in the subcontinent. Quite mild I think.

Also the cuss words are used here, I'm not even sure (can't see from the video) if he was addressing the batsman or just generally expressing disgust at a situation. Because the latter happens often. Not wholly but somewhat equivalent to how the F bomb in English is often used.

Why does this matter at all? This is a sport and you expect to hear moments like this arise out of frustration. If you look across the border, you'll see Virat Kohli yell much worse on a regular basis. The focus should be on Yasir's pathetic bowling and who he should be replaced by.

That word was 100% racist and you know it. That was no where like using "black" and anyone who grew up in the subcontinent knows that word is used only to insult someone. That word is never used just for black but deliberately as an insult to demean someone.

Well technically speaking he is referring to the guy's mom as a ghost which is a bit insuting )

But in the larger context not even close to the worse language I've heard on a cricket pitch.

Personally am glad he showed some emotion today rather than the idiot smile he was sporting all of day 1. Showed in the returns may be a bit late.

This issue exists in our cricket. Players' attitude in international cricket are almost completely different from other forms of cricket like first class and leagues. In my opinion it hurts us, the extra requirements to act "gentlemanly" in international matches. Not saying I dont understand it but I do think it hurts players' performance. Wasim wasnt much of a gentleman on the field.

Demeaning yes, racist I'm not sure. I have darker skin than most of the kids I grew up with. Got made fun of lots. Its an unfortunate part of our society. Not racist though, at least I dont think. But yeah something we need to get over. I just laugh at it for the most part. )

Ah sorry yeah, listening back I hear the mother element. Though in English 'son of a gun' is used and isn't really offensive, so I'd assume it's similar to that. Yeah, great point about the 'gentlemen's game' thing. I don't mind some emotion at all.
