as i said 2019 is make or break for him but hopefully he will find some form ahead of important away series

still alot of county cricket to be played .Lets see what is next excuse will be btw in last match he did score 60 odd which was in on difficult pitch

Lol I won't be needing an excuse because I've seen him enough in the last 18 or so months (from SL whitewash series), to come to the conclusion that he's finished.

If you can't score runs at domestic level against trundlers on one of the flattest wickets in England, then it would be unrealistic to expect him to deliver at the highest level. Even in the last FC season he only averaged in the low 30s.

His 60-70 run knock in the previous List A game was indeed excellent in tough conditions but I'm not sure he should playing for Pakistan in tests from now on. Having said that I don't mind giving him one more series for the Australia tour as he had prolific series last time there.

Azhar Ali in 50-over matches for Somerset

Anybody seen his hundred in England's domestic one dayers? Got it off about 80 balls. Seems to have developed a decent pull and inside out shot...Never thought I would see this.

Azhar Ali playing a poor innings. Strike rate of 81 (40 off 49 balls at the moment) when given a target of 350+ to chase, equating to a team strike rate required of 115-120, yet some posters were going bhangra over his last couple of innings and one of them came up with gem "Damn still better than Imam".

Yes it's his fault when his team is 5 down.

Azhar Ali is caught behind from the bowling of Helm for 46 - Somerset in serious trouble

You should know better than anyone, how the Pakistan ODI side suffered with Misbah's batting (let alone his woeful captaincy).

Azhar Ali is playing a typical Misbah innings - bat at a sedate pace, show no intent and let other batsmen take all the risk. When the chase is beyond repair, then start playing your shots.

Misbah trained his successor Azhar Ali well.

I don't like Azhar at all but to blame him for this is not acceptable he was going well at the start till they lost their way not many in world will win it from here let alone azhar.

He is a better List A player compared to FC cricket. I think he has already hit his peak at Test level.

TOM AND AZHAR ALI STEER SOMERSET IN TO SEMI-FINAL
Tom Banton hit his highest List A score, and his century laid the foundations for Somerset’s convincing 147 run victory over Worcestershire Rapids in the Royal London One-Day Cup play-off at Blackfinch New Road.

The opening batsman went onto make 112 out of Somerset’s 337 for eight from their 50 overs.

Then tight bowling backed up by sharp ground fielding extinguished the Rapids hopes of reaching the last four for a third successive campaign as they were bowled out for 190 in 38 overs.

Azhar Ali wrapped up the second half of the innings and finished with five for 34 from seven overs, but by then a considerable slice of damage had already been done to Worcestershire’s hopes.

Somerset will now face North Group winners Notts Outlaws in Sunday’s last four encounter at Trent Bridge.

The visitors were put into bat on a fresh wicket by Rapids skipper Brett D’Oliveira.

New ball pairing Pat Brown and Charlie Morris delivered probing initial spells with the initial 10-over powerplay restricted to just 38 runs.

Wayne Parnell made the initial breakthrough with 66 on the board in the 14th over as Azhar Ali (29) was caught via the inside edge by keeper Ben Cox away to his left.

Banton was full of inventive strokes and ‘ramped’ Ross Whiteley for six to bring up the century stand in 16 overs with Peter Trego.

A single down the ground off Daryl Mitchell took the 20-year-old to three figures from 95 balls with three sixes and 11 fours.

Brown struck in his first over back in the attack as Trego (37) went for a pull and bottom edged through to Cox.

Banton then went past his previous best List A score of 107 versus Kent in the opening One-Day Cup match of the season. However, on 112 he turned Parnell to Brown at deep square leg with the total at 203 for three in the 35th over.

Ed Barnard accounted for James Hildreth (38) and the England Lions player held onto two sharp chances, at point and long on, to dismiss Tom Abell (20) and Lewis Gregory (8) off Parnell and Morris respectively.

George Bartlett (24) holed out to long-on off Brown, who then held onto a sharp return chance offered by Roleof van der Merwe (13) but some late hitting by Craig and Jamie Overton took Somerset to a formidable total.

Parnell’s (three for 50) from 10 overs took his wicket tally in this year’s competition to 22.

Worcestershire had been reliant on Riki Wessels and Ferguson in scoring contrasting centuries when overhauling a target of 352 set by Derbyshire on Monday to reach the knockout stages, but the duo both fell relatively cheaply on this occasion.

Wessels (16) drove Craig Overton to point and, after Tom Fell (22) was lbw to Lewis Gregory, Ferguson was undone by a fine piece of fielding from Abell.

Daryl Mitchell turned Gregory in to the offside and set off for a quick single but Ferguson (21) failed to beat Abell’s direct hit from point with the total o 68 for three in the 16th over.

D’Oliveira (10) was undone by a ball from van der Merwe that straightened and Cox (25) lobbed a gentle return catch to Azhar Ali.

Mitchell (34) drilled Gregory straight into the hands of Craig Overton on the cover boundary and Azhar Ali helped to polish off the innings as Barnard (3), Whiteley (33), Parnell (3) and Morris (0) succumbed in quick succession.

Azhar Ali finished with figures of five for 34 from his seven overs.

Somerset skipper Tom Abell said: “I think that was as complete a performance as we have been this season. We’ve been a bit of hit and miss through this competition obviously.

“But that win against Surrey (in the final group game) was huge for us in terms of getting that confidence back into the team.

“The way Bants (Tom Banton) playted upfront was outstanding because I thought our 330 score was 50 above par.

“It was difficult out there but he took it upon himself and played out of his skin.

“We’ve seen it before against Kent (when scoring 107 this season). He is very capable of that and there were good contributions around him.

“Then with the ball I thought we were outstanding. We just wanted to keep it simple and ‘smash’ a good length and make them hit us off it and we did that and took our chances.

“Then Azhar (Ali) at the end gets five wickets and he is a great team man first and foremost and delighted for him.”

Mickey mentioned they might want to play a spinner tomorrow. I say call up Azhar because Yasir won't be of much use :ronaldo

I believe so. He actually has decent List A bowling stats. 4 five wicket hauls in his career.

Azhar Ali 4 Five wicket hauls
Yasir Shah Has 1 Five wicket haul which came against Zimbabwe.
Both Average 33 runs per wicket.

Sooner or later - question will be asked about Azhar Ali's magical inclusion in the WC squad :)

SOMERSET HEADING FOR THE FINAL!

An outstanding team performance saw Somerset come out on top in this Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final against Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge.

Every player played their part as Somerset swept aside their hosts to reach the final at Lord’s courtesy of a victory by 115 runs.

Under a beautiful blue Nottinghamshire sky, Steven Mullaney won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first on what appeared to be a good pitch.

Somerset openers Azhar Ali and Tom Banton looked to build a solid foundation and the pair kept the scoreboard ticking over with pushes to the boundary as they brought up the 50 partnership in the 10th over.

Banton it was who took Somerset to 50 with a six off Matthew Carter from the first ball of the 10th over. He then repeated the feat twice more whilst the final ball was beautifully reverse swept for four in an over that produced 24 runs for the visitors.

In the next over the 20-year-old reached his third 50 in as many matches from 44 balls, but fell for 59 when a faint edge carried through to Tom Moores behind the stumps courtesy of the returning Harry Gurney.

At 93 for one after 14 overs, Peter Trego arrived at the crease and Somerset soon reached the 100 mark in the 17th over as the veteran all-rounder hit Samit Patel, who now holds the record for the most consecutive List A appearances, to the ropes.

Azhar Ali moved to a run-a-ball 50 in the 21st over, at the end of which Somerset had moved to 133 for one. The Pakistan batsman seemed well set to play the anchor role for the Somerset innings, but on 72 he was bowled by Jake Ball to put the visitors on 183 for two.

Ball struck again with the final ball of the over when an impressive caught and bowled accounted for James Hildreth who had to depart for one at 185 three.

When he hit Mullaney for four in the 30th over, Trego became the third Somerset batsman to reach his half century, from 48 balls.

In the 35th over Luke Fletcher banged in a short delivery which Tom Abell (18) attempted to lift over the ‘keeper. Unfortunately, the Somerset skipper got the faintest of edges which was taken by Moores at 227 for four.

Just one run had been added to the total when George Bartlett was bowled by Mullaney without scoring. It was the Notts skipper’s 100th List A wicket.

Having already made three half centuries in the competition already, Lewis Gregory arrived at the crease and made his intentions clear by depositing Mullaney in to the upper section of the Radcliffe Road stand for a huge maximum.

Frustratingly for Somerset, Trego’s fine innings was brought to a conclusion when he was run out by Mullaney for 73, his runs coming of 72 balls.

Ball then claimed two wickets in an over for the second time in the match as Gregory (37) and Roelof van der Merwe (11) fell in the 45th, by the end of which Somerset were 290 for eight.

A 47-run partnership between the Overton twins gave the innings some late impetus but the visitors were eventually all out for 337 all out from their allotted overs.

Ball was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four for 62 from his ten overs.

The Notts openers made a solid start and the score had reached 38 when Craig Overton made the breakthrough with the first ball of the seventh over. Joe Clarke was the man to go, caught at short mid-wicket by Azhar Ali for 14. That brought Alex Hales to the crease and he received a positive response from the majority of the 5000-plus gathered at Trent Bridge today.

Ben Slater went to his fourth 50 of the competition from 52 balls from the last delivery of the 15th over as the hosts reached 95 for one. However, his celebrations were short lived as he fell for 58 to a brilliant diving catch from van der Merwe from the bowling of Jamie Overton with Notts at 110 for two.

Hales, a controversial figure of late, seemed to have put his off-field issues behind him as he reached his half century from 42 balls and again received a warm ovation from the stands. However, the joy of the home supporters once again didn’t last long as the very next ball saw Ben Duckett caught on the boundary by Craig Overton off the bowling of van der Merwe for one to leave Notts Outlaws on 125 for three.

Hales too was soon back in the pavilion for 54. The 30-year-old attempted to square cut Craig Overton but the ball found the edge and Banton gleefully took the catch with Notts on 131 for four.

That soon became 135 for five when Samit Patel was trapped lbw by van der Merwe for three. When Moores was caught by Jamie Overton at long on to give van der Merwe another wicket the home side were 156 for six at the end of the 29th over.

Notts had reached 186 when Mullaney (29) was the next man to go, bowled by Josh Davey and when Matthew Carter was caught in the deep by George Bartlett off Azhar Ali the home side were staring down the barrel at 197 for eight.

Davey then removed Ball courtesy of a catch from Abell and when Fletcher’s late resistance finally fell, Somerset had achieved a comprehensive victory and set up a Lord’s final for the first time since 2011.

Van der Merwe finished with three for 29 whilst there were two wickets each for Craig Overton and Davey.

would take Azhar Ali over Imam any day of the week! Azhar Ali practically decimated India on his own in CT before Fakhar and others chipped in

in odis still better spinner than yasir shah and imad wasim .What a champion player excellent performance once again

The misbah recipe of making the most of your limited talent rather than wasting limitless talent strikes again
Glad to see azhar ali doing well for Somerset
Very assiduous player and fine temperament
Any club would be lucky to have him.

Forget his batting He can play as a full time leg break bowler, will do better than the useless yasir

He made 13* runs in the second inning and his team won their match against Kent.

He’s finished. Shouldn’t really be selected in the next Test squad.

Tough season.

Only 1 half-century in the County Championship so far.

Scores runs & takes a wickets : fans - "Get him back in the side opening - at least he can bowl better than the spinners we have going into the WC."

Fails to score runs : fans "He's finished - Hope he never plays for Pak again, completely past it."

:)

Have the selectors and fans completely forgotten his tail ender like batting in South Africa which was criminal given he was our senior batsman. He has played his last test match for Pakistan and needs to be moved on

The way Azhar performed in South Africa, he should never play for Pakistan again.

Time to move on.

Azhar Ali county season

While we are busy with the world cup. Our so called main test batman Mr Azhar Ali is continuing where he left off in SOuth Africa by averaging 12 in 7 FC games.

I think we have seen enough now to conclude Azhar test career atleast away from UAE is done and with test championship starting after World Cup its imperative we do not select him and bring in new batsmen.

He is done and dusted, but as usual, Pakistan will not make a call on him until he voluntarily retires which I don’t think will happen for a number of years.

He will continue to get a free ride because of his “experience”. Experience of being a substandard Test batsman.
