[VIDEO] Azhar Ali for Somerset in One Day Cup and County Championship 2019 - Performance Watch

Yeah people are too keen to jump on a player on here. It’s always the same people as well! Their natural instinct is to say something negative about Pak, no matter what the stats. In a situation like this, where a player is naturally struggling a bit to maintain their past form, it won’t take them long to write them off. Really strange.

Match-winning innings on a dust bowl against Ravi Ashwin. Notts bowled out for 122...

Impressive from Azhar - good to see him get runs in English conditions

The guy needs to be moved on, he let us down badly in South Africa

Sad to say but Azhar Ali is finished.

A shame really.

His knee has deteriorated his batting.

Really used to like his batting in tests. May be the county stint will help him rediscover his international form? It doesnt help the fact that Pakistan does not play enough test matches.

I dont know if he has sorted out his short ball problem yet. he will be getting those in Australia in December. Suspect we will see fast pitches in Australia for Pakistan now that it all counts towards test championship.

Has been a walking wicket in test cricket for last 18 months, his county stint has been average. Time for him to be dropped and fresh faces brought in gor the SL series.

Doesnt matter what pitches we get in Australia, Azhar and shafiq are liabilities and need to be dropped.

Don't think he will play for Somerset next season. After his performances this season, they will be silly to resign him again. Azhar is clearly finished.

He seems to be very respected at the club. Helped them lift the Royal One Day cup and played a couple of important innings in FC, though admittedly not in the kind of form he was in during his previous stint in the longer format.. they may still pick him again

AZHAR ALI RECALLED BY PAKISTAN

The Pakistan Cricket Board have announced that they will be recalling all their centrally contracted players. These players will be required to play in a round of First Class matches followed by a mandatory national training camp ahead of a Test series against Sri Lanka.

This means that Azhar Ali will be unavailable for the final two Specsavers County Championship matches of the season.

In order for the necessary registration process to be completed in time for those final two matches, any replacement overseas signing would need to be registered by September 6th.

Somerset CCC Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry explains the implications for the Club.

“In order for us to have an overseas player available to replace Azhar Ali for those final two matches against Hampshire and Essex, we would need to register them before our home fixture against Yorkshire,” he said. “After discussing this with Azhar he felt that the team’s needs should come before his and he has therefore agreed to return to Pakistan early in order for us to have an overseas player for the final three games.

“This means that Azhar has played his last match for us this season. I know that I speak for everyone associated with the Club when I say that he has been outstanding . His contributions on the field have proved to be vital, mainly with the bat but no one should forget his five wickets in the Royal London One-Day Cup quarter-final at Worcestershire. His work behind the scenes, particularly with the younger players, has also made a huge impression on us all.

“To put it simply, if Azhar hadn’t agreed to this, we wouldn’t have had an overseas player for our final two matches. I think that speaks volumes about him as a man and as a professional. He has been a real credit to himself and the PCB during his time with us and there is no doubt in my mind that he has added real value to the Club.”

Following the announcement from the PCB, Azhar Ali said: “Obviously I’m sad to be leaving but it is an honour to play for Pakistan.

“My time at Somerset has been wonderful and I have really enjoyed it. It’s been fantastic. I have many happy memories of my time here but winning a Lord’s final really stands out as being special.

“When I came here, I really wanted to win the Championship with Somerset and I really hope that the team can achieve that this year. We have played some very good cricket and I wish all the players the very best for the last games of the season.”

I agree. He played a very crucial role in the Royal One Day Cup. His performances in FC might not have been good but then which Somerset batsman's performances were? They have all averaged in the 20's this season.

So are Somerset going to replace Azhar with Babar Azam? I know he's playing one FC match for them why not get him to play the other two aswell?

This looks like a send off tribute video! Babar to replace Azhar at Somerset then?

Babar will play the one Championship game (starts in 2 days) but the last 3 will be in September, and I think he'll have to return to Pakistan for the QEA Trophy by then.

Nice to see that he's been valued at Somerset.Good that he's had some decent perfmances for them and helped them win the one day cup.

Ah yes, I had heard something like that. I meant for next season, assuming there are no competing intl commitments..

Humiliating run, exposed in the county championship. How was he even picked after that by Pak, shocking

Atrocious season in the County Championship.

But with Misbah potentially coming in, i wouldn't be surprised to see him as test captain.

Average of 24 for a nightwatchmen is pretty pathetic, is getting worse as a player.

Time for pakistan to cut their lossses, dont need passengers in the team.

agreed, hes clearly finished. probably close to 40 years old. shouldn't even in the talks of being the next test captain.

bad timing for us since the test championships just started. if he couldve opened for another 2 years it wouldve been ideal.

What will happen is we there will be a few domestic or warm up games before SL tests, usual seniors will get a nice 50.

be selected in sqaud.

Chairmen of selectors - keeping in mind conditions and tour to Australia after we need experienced heads.

Coach - I dont want to lose my job after a day so i will pick "seniors"

Captain - Azhar, Asad are match winners so they are in team.

2-0 loss to SL and same loser will be on plane to Australia.

agreed. sadly, no way he is getting dropped with Misbah leading much of the affairs these days...

i would much rather invest in some younger players even if they end up avg 30 or so initially, so they can get better with time rather than an oldie only bound to get worse. our top order isn't too bad now with Imam not too bad and only to get better, while Shan showed ability to play short ball best among our players.

Would suggest something like:

Openers: Imam, Shan (backup can be Abid Ali)
Middle Order: Babar, Haris, 2 of Usman/Saad/Fawad/Asad,
Keepers: Sarfraz/Rizwan
Bowlers: Abbas, Shaheen, Yasir, Zafar/Another spinner, Faheem/Shadab

You guys are speaking as if we have youngsters knocking the door down in first class cricket. The sad fact is there are hardly any decent test quality batsman in the country. Moreover, don’t forget what Pujara averaged for Yorkshire last year, 14.

Is Azhar bhai going back to Somerset for the coming season?

With a century in the last innings against SL, he is not retiring from int'l cricket anytime soon and will be captaining Pak in our next tour of UK. Good for us if Somerset signs him up and give him some practice.

Though things can change if he fails completely against BD (if they come) and Pak also looses the series. If the series is drawn, Misbah will not remove him.

On this day last year Azhar Ali made a televised century for Somerset (Winners of the 50 over domestic competition) against Essex (Winners of County Championship and T20 Blast).

Cancellation of the England v Pakistan Test series will be a tough one for Azhar Ali - as he plays no other format

Any salary cut is going to hit him even harder. I hope the PCB makes exceptions on a case by case basis

So Azhar Ali played 9 County Championship matches in 2019.

And his batting average was 24.57.

How much more evidence is required that this old man is no longer a decent batsman on anything but a flat, slow, grassless wicket?

The seniors don't get picked on evidence but for their "experience".
