BCCI Chief Selector Chetan Sharma In Midst Of TV Sting Controversy

BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma was caught in a controversy on Tuesday after he allegedly revealed classified selection matters during a sting operation conducted by a TV channel. Sharma, who was recently reinstated by the BCCI after being removed following India's showing in the T20 World Cup in Australia, was seen during the sting operation casting aspersions on players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Sharma also allegedly revealed his internal discussions with head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli during the sting conducted by Zee News.

Sharma alleged that a lot of players take injections to expedite their return to competitive cricket despite being 80 to 85 per cent fit. The former India pace bowler also alleged that there was a difference of opinion between him and the team management over Bumrah's return from a stress fracture for the T20I series against Australia in September.

Bumrah still continues to be out of action, and will likely miss the entire four-Test Border-Gavaskar series and the three-match ODI series after that.

Sharma also alleged that there was an ego tussle between former captain Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. Sharma was unavailable for a comment when contacted by PTI.

It is learnt that the BCCI is looking into the matter, as national selectors are bound by contract and not supposed to speak to the media.

"It will be (BCCI secretary) Jay's (Shah) call as to what will be Chetan's future. The question is whether T20 skipper Hardik Pandya or ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma would like to sit with Chetan in a selection meeting knowing that he has let out internal discussions," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

a sting operation with no worthy news in it except zee news slapping "breaking news" all over the footage. such a lame sting operation.
chetan sharma could be sacked though for chatting internal matters like player pressures etc with random journo off the camera.

Chetan Sharma is incredibly dumb. First bcci joked with Indian fans by planting stories in media that Chetan has been sacked post T20 world cup and then bcci decided to select Chetan as his own replacement during the interview process. Ever heard someone being sacked from a job only for him to reapply and get selected again for the same role? Unfortunately nothing of this matters to most Indian fans who all are happy to see Indian players winning matches in India on dubious pitches. Chetan sharma in the sting caught saying that since he's a politician so he's able to manipulate other selectors. I mean which politician worth his salt goes around saying that he's a manipulative politician. Chetan Sharma is a joker and him being chief selector is a joke on Indian fans and if he still continues then it basically means that BCCI thinks Indian fans are jokers who don't get anything and can be made to jump around by some lame victories.

What dubious pitches?

Fair to say Chetan Sharma has been a net negative to Indian cricket in more ways than one.

SO basically Team India is cheating.. Dope tests need to be done.

Feel sorry for Australia that they have to play to cheating India

Not everyone is an Asif or Shoaib. Some players do have a thing called dignity.

Read it properly. It says players fudge fitness tests. They are not taking performance enhancement drugs during the match. Unless you have personally seen them.

He is saying it is impossible to detect them via tests. What is he talking about then, how can anyone test a player if they are undetectable, ICC follows the standard dope tests as soccer/ tennis/ et al :D

:)) so performance enhancing exists during fitness test and vanishes when the match starts. Maybe you should analyze properly

your own selector is saying his players are cheating. What does this have to do with asif or shoaib

Chetan said players take injections to appear fit, that's not cheating. Cheating would be if players are taking injections that are banned by WADA. Lets assume for a moment that players are taking some injection that improves their performance but if those injections/drugs aren't banned by WADA then its not cheating or illegal. Asif and Shoaib tooks drugs that are banned by WADA, so you see the difference.

taking injections to appear fit is illegal

Looks like a 'zabardasti ka sting operation'. You can expect this from gutter indian media channels especially zee news. This is the only thing they can do after posting terrible results in the last quarter. :91: :inti

please explain what you mean by "dubious pitches"

It is laughable how people comment on cheating by equating getting fit with injection with using performance enhancing drug :P

There is a difference between PEDs and anti inflammatory drugs. Ofcourse some people don't have the brains to understand that.

Can't imagine him continuing as chief-selector after this. This is a pretty major betrayal of trust between the players and Chetan Sharma.

He started feud between Ganguly and Kohli. Kohli and Rohit will get along just fine. Kohli is not going to be captain anymore anyway.

The claim of players taking injections is a very serious one and should be investigated. What injections are they taking and how do these injections help them pass fitness tests

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Chetan Sharma has resigned amid row over his alleged remarks in a sting operation. The BCCI secretary Jay Shah is said to have accepted his resignation. In the sting operation, Sharma had allegedly made some bizarre comments about Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and a number of other players in the team. The BCCI didn't release any official statement on the matter and now it seems like Sharma has been relieved from his duties.

In the sting operation, Sharma had allegedly revealed his internal discussions with head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli during the sting conducted by Zee News.

Sharma alleged that a lot of players take injections to expedite their return to competitive cricket despite being 80 to 85 percent fit.

Virat had decided to step down as India's T20I captain after the T20 World Cup 2021. Subsequently, he was removed as India's ODI skipper and not long after, he decided to himself quit Test captaincy. At present, Rohit Sharma is India's designated skipper in all three formats of the game.

Its funny seeing Indian posters now even defend the injections. So Indian cricketers been taking injections to enhance their fitness and performance.

I wonder who is going to be the first indian to come here and say that an injection that enhances fitness doesnt really enhance performance :)

Chetan Sharma's professional life turned upside down in a matter of few days. The former India pacer's second term as chairman of the BCCI men's team selection committee came to a premature end after he tendered his resignation to secretary Jay Shah, who accepted it on Friday. BCCI reportedly did not formally ask Sharma to put down his papers but it takes no prize to guess that he had very little option otherwise. Sharma's position as the chief selector became uncertain after he was heard leaking confidential details about internal matters of the Indian team's functioning in a 'sting operation' by ZEE Media.

Chetan Sharma's comments reportedly did not go down well with the BCCI top brass. A BCCI source told news agency PTI that head coach Rahul Dravid, captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya "lost faith in him" ever since the 'sting operation' was aired on Tuesday, February 14.

"Coach Rahul Dravid, captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have completely lost faith in him. He couldn't have possibly sat across the table along with them for selection committee meetings as he had lost all respect. He paid the price for being a big mouth,” said a BCCI source.

In the 'sting operation', Chetan Sharma was seen alleging that a lot of players take injections to expedite their return to competitive cricket despite being 80-85 per cent fit.

The former India pace bowler also alleged that there was a difference of opinion between him and the team management over pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah's return from a stress fracture for the T20I series against Australia in September.

He also claimed that T20I captain Hardik Pandya, pace bowler Umesh Yadav and Deepak Hooda regularly visited him at his residence.

Chetan also spoke about the relationship between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and alleged that there was an ego tussle between Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

Sharma and the entire selection committee had earlier been sacked following India's semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup in Australia. He re-applied for the post and was re-appointed as chairman.

Chetan Sharma has been negative for Indian cricket one way or the other.
