Internet Can't Keep Calm After Discovering This Old Video Of Modi Denying Climate Change

On September 5, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was met with sharp criticism after his comments on climate change during his Q & A video conference session with school children across the country.

When a student from Assam raised concerns about climate change and asked Modi on steps to protect the environment, he said, "Climate has not changed. We have changed. Our habits have changed. Our habits have got spoiled. Due to that, we have destroyed our entire environment."

Modi further added that the elders often complain that it is colder than the previous year and that it is due to their age and tolerance level that they actually feel cold.

Now, fast-forward to 2017, the video has resurfaced on the Internet leaving many in disbelief who are now sharing the video on microblogging site Twitter.

In 2015, speaking at the United Nations conference in Paris, PM Modi said that India did not create the climate change menace but was suffering its consequences. Climate change is a major global challenge. But it is not of our making. It is the result of global warming that came from prosperity and progress of an industrial age powered by fossil fuel,” he said.

"But we in India face consequences. We see the risk to our farmers. We are concerned about rising oceans that threaten our 7,500 km of coastline and 1,300 islands. We worry about the glaciers that feed our rivers and nurture our civilisation."

Some on Twitter even drew comparisons between Modi and Donald Trump's take on climate change.

However, there were many on social media who came out in defence of PM Modi and shared the longer version of the video in which Modi is seen saying, "If we change our habits, the environment will change. Humans shouldn't fight the nature but love it. Water, air, plants, we humans have to love them. We have forgotten that rivers are our mother hence Ganga river has become dirty."

He is right, but haters and ignoramuses won't get it. With time our capacity to bear climate change has weakened,. We have only ourselves to blame. Our forefathers used to work under the sun, and we can't function without air conditioned environments.

Get rid of your air cooling machine, fan, car A/C, and walk everywhere so your genetic lineage can adopt back to old age and save this planet.

Been already living without using fan or AC (and without warm clothes in winters). I have AC installed only for guests and Mrs CC, she is also warming up to give up AC.

What a beautiful message. Very topical as just today I was reading a story in the Times that Diwali marks the onset of residents are fleeing Dehli in winter to escape the smog. which has become the worst on the planet. Apparently the fireworks combined with the general pollution make it particularly bad at this time of year.

Hope the politicians of the future are more concerned about climate change a la Al Gore.

The Trumps and Modis will not do enough on this front.

The environmentalism started from west, is based on exploitation. They still believe world is for human consumption. Like we may run out of XYZ natural resources, so we need to safeguard them. It's personal, selfish reasons for the environment movement.

Whereas, in India, there are environment rights, earth rights, nature rights. It's a totally different idea, and not human-centric. Modi has talked about such ideas many times, and credit to him.

Come on haters, go all guns blazing. What makes you not spout drivel yet?

That climate has changed is now scientifically verifiable. Idiotic comment from a world leader.

Firecrackers were banned by Supreme Court and even in adjoining cities of Haryana and UP this year less people burst crackers than before.. However you will still find some people who will burst crackers so unless the government specifies a heavy fine on anyone who burst crackers countrywide people won't stop..

More than Diwali, Delhi has huge pollution problems which need to be rectified ranging from huge number of cars, not proper pollution checks, factories, crop burning, not enough forest cover etc etc.. Awareness about pollution is also lacking amongst general public..

I thought he was joking just to make kids laugh, didn't expect him to be this much dumb and lame.

I agree.
It’s not the weather that is changing it is us.
We as humans as getting three degrees hotter each year.
Let’s not even talk about the animals

Yes Modi ji it's not like sixteen of the last seventeen years have been the hottest since recorded history.

It's a great message actually, it reflects the spirit of Mahatma. But he would not have shied from saying it to the most powerful leaders on their own turf. I wonder if Modi was brave enough to say this to Trump to his face?
