Faheem Ashraf - The all-rounder Pakistan has waited for?

Has to be one of the luckiest cricketers.
0 skill with the bat and ball (or even swing), but still manages to get wickets.

When I heard Faheem got a fifer I was contemplating that he has brought improvements in.his bowling but was disappointed to see his first 2 wickets were more of the same. Bowling back of the length with the new bowl. Batsman just need to wait and guide the bowl in the gap, something northern batsmen did'nt do and trying to play a shot every length bowl in a 4 day match. Both Zeeshan Malik and Ali Sarfaraz got out trying to hit his length bowlingt, poor and terrible game by northern batsmen. Faheem was decent with the older bowl and started to pitch in fuller for which he was rewarded getting Faizan with a great delivery. Some of the credit goes to top order Northern batsmen who gave him confidence and brought him into the rhythm with their pathetic shots.

A nothing fifer really. Bunch of soft dismissals. Northern batsmen should be kicking themselves.

Was in before declaration and got 0 off 8 when it was time to hit out. Horrible batting. Hes a tailender

Waqar Younis in his interview with PP:

PakPassion.net: Faheem Ashraf seems to have lost his way in international cricket. How do you plan to restore his confidence and get him back to his best?

Waqar Younis: We wanted to have him around for the recent Sri Lanka Test series, but he was injured. We would love to have the luxury of an all-rounder in the Test team who can give us that fourth bowling option, especially when you have a young pace-bowling attack. Look at England with Ben Stokes who is batting at number 5 or 6 and is a complete bowling option. It’s very handy to have someone like Stokes in your Test team with both bat and ball and we are searching for that option. Faheem has been around the squad for a while now and we want to get him fit, to work on his batting too and fill that all-rounder’s spot if he can.

Faheem Ashraf is not a all rounder folks, he is medium fast bowler for 2nd spell who can slog a little bit. Pakistani fans needs to understand that all rounder is a player who is useful in batting and bowling for example Abdul Razzaq :)

Included in the Test squad for first Test vs Bangladesh.

Is there no other fast-bowling all-rounder in Pakistan who can be tried out?

Misbah on selection of Faheem Ashraf for first Test squad vs Bangladesh:

"In the last series, we felt that if we consider our wicket-keeper as the 6th batsman, if we have a bowler who can bat at 7 then we have the option of that combination. Faheem Ashraf was unfit earlier and didn't play for much of the QEA Trophy but he got 5 wickets in the final and has contributed with the bat. So such a combination can help us. But we also have in our minds that he should offer a complete bowling option and should be good enough as a bowler.

Pathetic bowling today.

Doesn't learn does he.

46 runs from 4 overs.

Crap bowling today he was decent last year but this year not been good enough even as a bowler

One good performance against Bangladesh in a warm-up game back in 2017 really did fool a lot of people into believing that he’s a good player.

Personally I find him a pretty poor white ball cricketer but a pretty good red ball one.

I don’t think Pakistan recognise his actual skills.

The drama of him being a good Test player will also end soon. He is simply not international material.

His batting is so bad that every time he plays a good shot I get concerned that the national selectors dont pick him again on the basis of his fake alroundership.

He is a disaster, but he is a frontline pacer in a league which is supposed to have the best pace attack in franchise cricket.

Faheem supporters went through a very depressing cycle.

- he is a world class all-rounder in the making

- okay maybe not, but he is better than Pandya

- okay maybe not, but at least he is equal to Pandya

- okay maybe not, but at least he is a better bowler than Pandya

- okay, he is just terrible and we were wrong

Faheem is a perfect example of what happens to a professional cricketer (player), once he becomes complacent. Guy still has FC average of 30+ for 60+ innings with 7/2 fifty/centuries - that can’t be fluke, no matter what the quality of domestic cricket (30+ average actually is very good for PAK domestics in previous years); it means guy had the batting ability. His 125+ FC wickets have come at 27/54 stats, which is impressive for any circumstances.

But, once he became PAK regular, I feel he simply stopped focusing on cricket. He is officially just turned 26 couple of months back; even if I take few years bigger, he should be at his prime as a cricketer - may not be what Junaids expects from him, but there is absolutely no reason of this free fall at his age apart from self negligence - I think, his FC stats will also take a sharp dip in coming seasons. It’s unfortunate because he had a coach like Arthur looking after him for his entire international career and he wasted that opportunity.

I doubt he will find a place in next year's PSL given how he's been brutally exposed on the batting friendly wickets in Pakistan.

has not improved an inch on his bowling or batting since i saw him for the first time, live vs SL in CT-17

the 3 "Friends" trio of Hassan Ali, Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf have gone down from the high point of CT-17

Shadab seems to be working on his batting now but could have been soooo much better only if he was hard working

Faheem has the same problem with his batting as he had to begin with

shame, he could have been much better

I would be more confident in Lasith Malinga’s batting ability than Faheem Ashraf, and that is how genuinely poor he has been with the bat.

In his last Test he took 6-99 against South Africa.

And yet inferior and less successful bowlers keep being picked in the Test team - Musa, Imran, Shinwari - because the non-performing seniors feel threatened by the group of more successful younger players like Shadab, Hasan and Faheem.

This is all about an unsuitable coach and chief selector being appointed prematurely while he is still far too close to his former teammates.

You get a Category A contract and the captaincy when you have averaged 12.12 away as a batsman for the last 2 years.

And you get discarded after you take 6-99 in your last Test, because Misbah feels less threatened by Imran Khan and Musa Khan who owe him their loyalty for their undeserved call-up into the team.

Junaids, less than two years back you wrote that Faheem Ashraf is a better all-rounder than Jason Holder (though the WIN guy is 1 foot taller, but this time it didn't matter) - I can't recall the exact words, but it was in late 2018, not even two years back when Holder was second or top ranked Test all-rounder; therefore anything that you write about Faheem actually loses credibility to me. I am afraid, you'll have to sell that 6-99 for rest of PP life as I don't see this Faheem guy in PAK Test shirt again - be it with Misbah or else.

I think Faheem - and Holder - are deeply mediocre Test all-rounders. I think the same of Mitchell Marsh.

But you still need a pace-bowling all-rounder to bat at 8, so I’d pick him anyway. Especially when clowns like Musa Khan and Imran Khan keep getting selected instead.

Could be, but still Jason Holder is light years ahead of Faheem Ashraf - neither might be Bugati Veyron, but one is at least BMW and the other one is PAK Suzuki........

By the way, looking at his stats, I myself is surprised, never thought the mediocre guy is that good - after 40 Tests, averages 33 with bat and 26 with ball with 3 hundreds, one being double; 6 5fors and 1 10 for. Even if I take out AFG, BD & ZIM, that stats reads 35 Tests, average of 32 with bat (2 hundreds and highest 202* against ENG); average of 30 with ball including 4 5fors. And, then comes Faheem Ashraf with his 6-99.........

I agree. I do now rate Holder higher. You’re right. I was wrong.

I’d give anything to have a 6’8 tall Jason Holder as Pakistan’s Number 7, with Shadab Khan at Number 8, a specialist bowler at 9 and then Naseem and Shaheen at 10 and 11. What a team!

I think specialist quicks need to be part of a four man pace attack in SENA, otherwise they are overworked and lose pace and break down injured.

I would have had Amad Butt in every National squad since 2016, just so he can bat and bowl in the nets against the best players and improve.

But Faheem is the least bad option currently.

My bottom six in the Test team would be:

6. Rizwan (wk)
7. Shadab
8. Faheem (SENA), Zafar Gohar (Asia)
9. Mohammad Abbas (England), Ehsan Adil (NZ/SA/Australia), Sajid Khan (Asia)
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Naseem Shah

Just to add, I don’t think we should blame anyone for Musa or Imran. Musa was a PP darling before we could actually watch him play and the guy is born as 6-7 years old.... even you would have been overwhelmed watching a 17 years old boy clocking 140K without a polished action, “kid” could bat a bit as well!!!

Imran was a compromised pick - blame Amir & Wahab for that. These two clowns (since you used the word), suddenly retired from Test cricket a month or two before Australia tour and PAK literally had none (Pacer) even with the experience of probably visiting Australia as a tourist!!!! Imran was the only available guy from last trip and he did back it with a 5for in the only FC game before first Test. It was a bizarre selection definitely (more so considering his domestic seasonal stats), but I can understand the logic. Blunder would have been to carry on with him - which they didn’t.

Forget about your fantasy of Bollywood cricket - these Adil & Sameen & Faheem won’t do any thing better if given chances. Rahat is 6’3” & Sohail Khan 6’4”, Irfan 7’0” - all had their fair chances, and we have seen them in action also. The guy who really could have made a difference was Sohail Khan and guy can bat a bit as well - unfortunately, he is also born as 6/7 years old, hence became obsolete at the age when fast bowlers should be at their peak (29-30).

Misbah actually has done better here - realised quickly that Aruther has wasted two years chasing wild goose, aka Lance Kluesnerisque all-rounder Faheem Ashraf. Instead of that, Arthur could have done better by skinning out Amir, Wahab & Yasir to improve their batting average up to 18-19 level; it was possible; in fact much easier than extracting an international cricketer out of Faheem Ashraf.

Waqar Younis on Faheem Ashraf

“He is another very talented cricketer but its unfortunate that he hasnt really kicked off as yet in his career; He’s a good T20 and OD bowler but when it comes to Test match cricket, he hasnt played that many (Tests) and hasnt made an impact in the Tests he has played in; He’s here and we are looking at him - we haven’t really decided yet (on playing him) but we are thinking about it - we will definitely gear him up and see if he is ready to go and deliver the goods for Pakistan”

Waqar basically saying today that the guy is not yet a Test cricketer.

Makes one wonder what he's doing in the squad.

Not sure what Waqar is talking about, he took wickets in the last test match he played against South Africa. He played a key role with both bat and ball in the last Pakistan England Ireland tour where he scored crucial runs and picked up crucial wickets. He is not a world class cricketer but he can provide the side with much needed balance with both bat and ball and can be the fourth seamer who allows the pacers to operate at 100% in all their spells as oppossed to pacers running out of gas by Overs 45 onwards.

Our planning and team combination for SENA tours is diabolical.

Been a decent T20 bowler who has had his moments but we chose this guy out of desperation as we are looking for our own Hardik Pandya, his batting is nowhere near Test match level and I think we should look elsewhere.

What a joke. Both Shadab and Faheem have done well so far in their test careers while being inconsistent in the OD formats.

Shadab and Faheem bascially won us the games against IRE and ENG @ Lord's. We wouldn't have won without them.

Mickey had it right outside Asia and it paid its dividend.

When we're slagging off his batting, the point we're missing is that he could do just as well with the ball or even better as the other pacers evidenced from his previous SENA performances.

If he can do the job with the ball, why should the other pacers be exculpated with their batting while Faheem gets it in the neck?

If he played, he'd probably score more runs than Azhar Ali.

Waqar Younis called Faheem a good limited overs player. I don't think he is good in any format. His Test stats look decent, but the batting average of 23 is boosted by an 83 scored against Ireland. Faheem is clearly not a good batsman. His bowling is decent, he actually did well in the only game he played in SA, but its still a short sample size. He is not good enough to make the team because he does not excel in any facet really. At least Shadab has showed some promise with the bat.

Except T20 this guy should not be in any of our squad. The problem with us is we go overboard after one innings.

I would love to see Faheem’s game in the nets. I am sure he performs brilliantly there hence everyone goes gaga...

He can swing the ball, should be played as fourth pacer + yasir
Drop azhar ali for alam and handover captaincy to masood/ azam

Azhar Ali: “All-rounders create balance especially medium pacers. Faheem Ashraf is working hard to make his spot in the team .... Shadab as an AR has shown he’s good enough for #7. We have to find someone at #8, if conditions are good for bowling, we need a medium pacer AR."

Azhar has made it quite clear a position and role in the team that is open to Faheem if he can grab the opportunity.

Why has Pakistan not tried Aamir Yamin? His bowling is suited to English conditions

Why has Pakistan not tried Aamir Yamin? His bowling is suited to English conditions

I also said few months ago that his bowling can be decent in England as he gets natural shape on the ball. He is the kind of player who doesnt get heads rolling in nets and training sessions but are able to do a decent job on the field more often than not. His FC stats are pretty impressive too.

In Pak cricket or maybe in other countries as well you need to be able to really impress in the nets and in the training session. However, in Pakistan cricket anything outside the orthodox norms like Fawad Alam, Aamir Yamin, Sadaf Hussain and the list goes on or lack of quality in the eyes of the people judging, you are in for a tough ride as a cricketer.

Where is he?

Didn't even make the 17-man T20I squad and didn't play a Test. Long holiday for him.

Asked him.

He's still with the squad in Manchester.

Setback for Faheem:

Faheem Ashraf has been ruled out due to fitness concerns. Ali Shan will replace him for the National T20 Cup.

Faheem has confirmed to us that he was ruled out due to a shoulder injury

He is plain awful with bat.
His bowling is good enough for giving other pacers a break during a test. Nothing more than that. A bit like paul collingwood or scott styris or farveez maharoof i guess.

Can only see him being good enough to be picked in t20is. Hassan Ali and Wahab Riaz are currently better batters than him. While his bowling is better than Anwar Ali, it's still not good enough to be 3rd seamer's.

Let's hope he works hard and improves.

Otherwise let's keep hoping for a good pace bowling allrounder to come through or Amad Butt improves leaps and bounds in both disciplines.

Part of the 15 member squad vs Zimbabwe for 1st ODI - could this be his comeback series?

I just don't think he has it in him. Full on Tapia cricketer , bowling action is ugly with literally disabled left hand ...still hasnt made an impact after playing for so long ..only in the team cus of qabila culture aka Babar

Worst cricketer to have debuted for Pakistan in the last 15 years.

Avgs 40 with the ball and 14 with the bat in odis
Should have been the other way around :misbah

He should be replaced by shadab who is much better in all three facets of the game

Faheem Ashraf vs the top 5 sides in ODI:

15 matches played
Batting average: 12.90
Bowling average: 76.00

He's turning 27 years old in a few months, how long are we going to string along this fake all-rounder?

Not good enough. Can't believe people were doing banghra over a few good overs against Zimbabwe.

He’s coming off an injury so the pace isn’t quite there yet. He will be back to 140ish relatively soon.

Played a decent little knock today and he’s in good form, played well during the National T20.
However, this is a series that he NEEDS to do well in with both bat & ball.
