"I was an automatic selection for the World Cup" : Imam-ul-Haq

Imam is no world beater but he makes the mediocre Pakistani team on merit. He has outperformed all of his competitors. His competition is not with Buttler, De Kock, Sharma, etc. so these stats have no significance.

This must be a new thing to pick and choose your competition which renders all stats as insignificant because anyone can pick their level of competition.

If he can improve his shot range which will improve his strike rate, he is more than good enough for this average team. I really want to see in the next few games if he can improve his shot range and strike rotation.

Ok, then please go ahead and find Sharmas, Buttlers, Starc, etc in Pakistan's domestic cricket.

Selectors can pick a squad from the pool of players available in the country and this is the best set of available players. No amount of denial will change this fact.

This is what some people don't comprehend. They will criticize but not give solutions. We saw how much Sahibzada Farhan was hyped on this forum and he was clueless in International cricket.Even Fakhar who has been pathetic lately escapes criticism because he plays phaaast but scores in single digits.
Some posters have made it a business to criticize inzi and imam for everything.Just take a look at this team and think. We already saw how our alternative team was humiliated by Australia.

The same people making the same excuses for this Automatic guy

I find the hysteria around Imam bizzare. Pakistani fans are jumping on him like he's committed some crime.

I accept that he has a lot still to prove, but for heaven's sake give the guy a chance. He has had a decent start to his career and yes we know his strike rate needs to improve. Hopefully it will. But on what basis Pakistani fans think it's justifiable to direct all their anger towards Imam is not clear to me.

Even this statement Imam gave to the media before the Engalnd tour started - he was clearly angry at the accusations of nepotism which are unfair. He's in the team because he's performed, and so to pretend he's Faisal Iqbal type is just delusional. Despite knowing that the statement was made in anger against a backdrop of nepotism claims, Pakistani fans here still think it's appropriate to label Imam as arrogant.

A more experienced campaigner would not let all this negativity get to his head, but its clear from that interview that the nepotism claims are a cause of real upset to Imam. He needs to channel that anger and frustration into performing for Pakistan, so that all his critics shut up.

We don't have other realistic options. With imam at least we are able to play full overs

Looking at how Fakhar has been batting, having Imam at the other end is not a bad idea. You don't want two dashers and finding yourselves at 10/2 with Babar coming in by 2 or 3rd over.

If Imam is to not be dropped then it would be a smart move to bring Babar to open and utilize the powerplay, Imam can shift down to 3 whent he field opens up so he doesn't get tied down as much as he does during the opening powerplay.

Possibly he's getting more hate normal due to nepotism but his performances are generally ordinary having a strike rate of 70 and an average under 40 minus minnows is bound to get criticism.
Slow starts cannot be made up by the middle and lower order to post winning totals as there aren't Kohlis and Vivs in the team it's imperative the run rate improves in the first 10-15 overs.

So.

Time for this automatic selection to show he can bat at the top.

70 strike rate won't work!

Lets see what automatic selection with 55 average does

If this automatic selection plays at a strike rate of 50 today then he is in for it no matter how good his average has been or that his strike rate has been a borderline 80

Imam not doing himself any favours with this strike rate.

Chasing 373...... after 7 overs, if you need 7.69 RPO to win, this open should not eve be allowed to play club cricket.... let alone World Cup.....

One boundary in first 7 overs....

Not only that with a S/R of 63, you are putting pressure on Fakhar Zaman to score faster.....

Pathetic!!!

Imam-ul-Haq c & b Ali 35 (44b 3x4 0x6) SR: 79.54

chasing 373 ..... a S/R of 79 is CRIMINAL!!!!

I am glad he is gone. If I was Moin, I would have dropped his catch!

Matched his average against the top 5 teams improved his strike rate almost 80 but then it's a flat pitch nothing extraordinary.

He is a turtle. Ridiculous to take so many balls to get going and then not even making it count.

Will Imam ul Haq EVER play an innings of note?

Every single time we see him moving along at a gentle strike rate ensuring that Pakistan dont cross the line. It seems to me that the best he can do so far is to ensure respectability to the total. Thats certainly not enough at all on that especially on these flat tracks. Does he even have it in him to play an innings of note?

Imam ul Haq batting at a strike rate of 79.58 which means he is going at 4.77 runs per over. In a run chase that required you got over 7.46.

And people say Imam isnt the issue?

It was a pathetic knock in the circumstances. And is the only reason run rate is above 8 now

Maybe once he develops some shots.

And is not charging down the pitch against the fast bowlers to try and score.

This may take some time and he might learn. With his average, he has bought some time now, and he's going nowhere anyway at least until end of the World Cup.

So, might just pray that he pull something off.

But... from what I have seen in the PSL, T20I and till now in ODIs, he will continue to struggle in any high profile match, or any high scoring match for that matter.

I think he tries to score, but he just can't because of lack of shots. Charging down the pitch against the pacers just will not work.

He will be useful in dead rubbers though, or when a high score isn't required.

Mr automatic selection doesnt look like a team player

I just wish we could recall Sharjeel Khan somehow.

Or more realistically, I'd like hafeez to open and let middle order be the same

With imam you can expect us to lose high scoring encounters 10 out of 10 times

Striking at 79, but the first thing he will do after the match his check up on his average to make sure it still intact. Kind of cringy how he checks up on his average, shows how his personal achievements are more important than the team. I supported Imam at first but now I am starting to dislike the guy.

He played fine, had he gone early we may have had a collapse.

Should be backed.

Scored a match loosing 35(44) at 79 SR when team is chasing 374...

"I'm automatic selection with 55 average" :imam

Of course there would've been a collapse only which Imam stopped by batting slowly on a flat pancake and costing his team yet again the extra runs needed to win.

Sarfraz the specialist captain cost us the match

Seems to be automatic selection in every game also, why not pick Abid and see if we get an idea of more options

ROFL
Imam calling himself automatic selection I thought its some sort of a joke before seeing the clip. Guy is not only crap as a cricketer but is arrogant and shameless as well.

IF his uncle Inzi was not chief selector he would not even be allowed in the Pakistan team nets.

Inzamam has left Shakeel Sheikh behind, shame on PCB and Imran Khan for continuing with Inzamam. He should be kept away from every post of PCB.

Impressive knock at a very good strike rate.

He will have to do this in a run chase too.

Been really impressed with Imam in this innings. His strike rate, shot rotation and ability to score boundaries has improved a lot.

Clearly a first XI player on merit.

Can't judge that right now, only judge the innings at the end of the match judging by how well England play.

Even though Imam might not have the best skills or most talented batsman. I think what people call "arrogance" in his personality is what we need currently. He is not brainless like our other cricketers. Always willing to give a fight.

I think as a nation we love mediocrity and like typical "Thanks to management" attitude. He is best option to go alongside Fakhar no matter how much people chant parc**

Superb knock with a better strike rate today. Now if he can only improve his strike rate during power-plays..

His best... impressive 150 not out.

I am glad we have people in the lineup who can get big 100s.

Fakhar, Imam, hopefully Babar too. We need to score big runs in this world cup judging by how the pitches are behaving.

If he plays like this in the WC, I have no issue him being there.

Brilliant innings today! :14:

great knock.. good to see Pakistan top order in good Knick going into WC.

Watch England chase this score down in 40 overs. Great individual innings let's see if it can lead to Pak victory, only then can it be properly judged.

Sarfaraz is to be blamed if we lose for batting at a strike-rate of 79. Cut your Imam hate.

I thought he would get out when the slog was on, would have been nice to see him stick around a bit longer as the last specialist batsman, but it's not his game to be fair, so he has proven he can provide a solid base as an opener.

Cut your Sarfraz hate, he played well and formed a good partnership with Imam when Harris gave away his wicket. He miscued trying to up the run rate.

Very well played today Hes proving myself and all the other doubters wrong Long may it continue

Good knock today, at an unusual strike rate for him.

He can score runs, just needs to score them faster.

I’ve always criticised him not because of any personal vendetta or nepotistic vendetta against him but simply because I disapproved of his over cautious approach. Today he was sublime. No denying it!

Sarfraz fans call other players selfish when they don't bat at the required rate but when their hero doesn't bat at the required rate he is defended to the hill. :yk

Look at these imam haters trying to undermine his performance. Smh.
He played a wonderful innings. I'm pretty sure that even if we had a total of 380, eng would have chased it down. So don't criticise Imam for it.

It sure would help if Babar could stop making pretty 15s... then again, he doesn't seem to possess the same elite mentality as Imam. In fact, very few Pakistani batsmen possess such hunger and consistency considering our poor history with regard to scoring ODI hundreds.

Leading run scorer in the Asia Cup, leading run scorer in South Africa and now leading run scorer in England, but somehow, he is not an automatic selection for the World Cup.

Pakistani fans are in a league of their own.

Exactly. Babar is a homeless man's Hashim Amla but he escapes criticism because he's "talented." :)))

Exactly and we talk as if we have David Warner whose place he is blocking.Imam is least of our problems

If some of our hypocritical fans applied the same astronomical standards to Babar as they do to Imam, he would be getting crucified for his performance up till now in this series. However, their darling can do no wrong. :angelo

You can give these folks their Sahibzada Farhans, Saad Alis, Saud Shakeels, Saif Badars.

Some of our fans deserve the humiliation. Mamoon is right. He is showing signs of improving yet you all keep going on about how he is being selected. Babar Azam doesn't seem to have the same desire as Imam.
