Harry Kane: England striker can beat Wayne Rooney's goalscoring record, says Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate has backed England captain Harry Kane to surpass Wayne Rooney as the country's record goalscorer as the Tottenham forward prepares to win his 50th cap against Belgium on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

The Tottenham striker already has 32 England goals to his name, putting him sixth on the all-time list and 21 behind Wayne Rooney.

Southgate said: "In terms of what is possible, the goalscoring record is the really interesting one because his strike rate for us is phenomenal and he has time on his side to chase Wayne Rooney's record which would be a remarkable feat.

"I know from his perspective, while the personal achievement is something he is driven towards, it is the team achievement.

"He is so focused on the team having success and he would want to look back over the next few years at the team achieving."

When asked to pick out a stand-out moment for Kane on the international scene, Southgate recalled his first-ever goal for England.

He was England Under-21 boss at the time and had worked with the Spurs striker in the age group before he was given a debut by Roy Hodgson in March 2016 against Lithuania.

"I think his first goal for England with Roy because we were with the Under-21s and whenever one of your players get called up, you always want them to do well," Southgate added.

"I remember hearing he had scored and that was a brilliant moment for all of us because you want your boys to progress and do well.

"His goal at Hampden as well and of course his goals at the World Cup. To win the golden boot is an incredible personal achievement.

"It is a special moment for him. We have had three or four get to the 50-cap milestone in the last year and for all of them it is a fantastic achievement."

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been reportedly named by Pep Guardiola as a player he wants Manchester City to target in the summer.

Harry Kane is expected to tell Tottenham he wants to leave if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

As first reported by The Athletic, Kane is becoming increasingly concerned at Tottenham's failure to compete for major trophies.

The 27-year-old will not make a final decision on his future until after the European Championship this summer, at which he will captain England.

Any potential departure from Spurs would be complicated and would need to be sanctioned by chairman Daniel Levy.

Kane is contracted to Tottenham until June 2024 - after signing a six-year deal in 2018 when Mauricio Pochettino was manager - and the club have always insisted that he is not for sale.

Kane came through the academy at Spurs and remains committed to the club but, as he approaches 28, he is keen to play for a team that is capable of winning the biggest competitions in the sport.

The striker made his priorities clear when speaking to Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp last year. When asked if he wanted to spend the rest of his career at Spurs, Kane said: "It's one of those things; I couldn't say yes, I couldn't say no.

"I love Spurs - I'll always love Spurs. But it's one of those things - I've always said if I don't feel we're progressing as a team or going in the right direction, then I'm not someone to just stay there for the sake of it.

"I'm an ambitious player. I want to improve, I want to get better, I want to become one of the top, top players.

"It all depends on what happens as a team and how we progress as a team. So it's not a definite I'm going to stay there forever, but it's not a no either."

Tottenham could yet alleviate Kane's concerns in the remaining months of the season.

Jose Mourinho's side take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final later this month as they bid to win their first trophy since victory in the same competition 13 years ago, while they are just three points outside the top four with eight Premier League matches still to play.

However, the news that Kane is considering his future is likely to trigger interest from the biggest clubs, both in England and across Europe.

Manchester City could be looking to sign a new striker this summer, with Sergio Aguero leaving at the end of his contract. Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration for Kane, previously describing him as "incredible".

Manchester United and Real Madrid have regularly been linked with Kane, who is the joint-eighth highest scorer in Premier League history, while his former Spurs boss Pochettino is now in charge at Paris Saint-Germain, one of the continent's richest clubs.

"I do worry for the club. Will Harry Kane stay at the club next season? I don't know. What do you want in football? What do you want out of it?

"Do you want to get to Wembley, play in a cup final against Man City and sit with 10 men behind the ball for 90-odd minutes? Let's be honest, that's what is going to happen. It's the most predictable thing we are going to see in a cup final.

"Sometimes you look at a cup final and think a team may have a go and take the game to the opposition, but we know full well that this game will see Spurs sit back, Man City will have 70-per-cent possession - at least - and it will just be what time.

"Do you want to play your career like that? You are going to be playing in a big cup final and you will just be working on scraps.

"It will be interesting to see what he wants to do. Does he want to win trophies or does he just want to win Golden Boots? Golden Boots are an individual thing, not a team thing."

Harry Kane would be a perfect signing for Manchester City this summer, with the Tottenham striker ‘ticking all the boxes’ Pep Guardiola is looking for in the frontman.

That’s according to talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino, who believes there could be a clause in the England captain’s Tottenham contract that may allow him to leave the club if they fail to win trophies.

While Tottenham have again failed to win a trophy, Kane has maintained his stunning goalscoring form and is on course to win a third Premier League Golden Boot

Kane’s future is under the spotlight against with Spurs set to end yet another season without silverware.

Now 27, the striker is entering the prime of his career and many are expecting him to decide to quit his boyhood club soon as he is still yet to lift any major silverware in his career.

Kane has seen a host of former teammates come and go and win trophies after leaving White Hart Lane, including Kyle Walker at Man City and even Christian Eriksen, who overcome his difficult start at Inter Milan to help the Italian club beat Juventus to the Serie A title this season.

All eyes are on Kane ahead of the summer transfer window, amid reports of interest from Manchester United and Man City, as well as interest from abroad.

But while United have been strongly linked with a move for the England skipper, Cascarino says he’d be a perfect fit at the Etihad under Guardiola, saying he’d do all the things Sergio Aguero couldn’t provide the Spanish boss.

Speaking on Saturday’s Weekend Sports Breakfast show, Cascarino said: “For Manchester City this summer, it’s who becomes available, can you buy him and will he fit into the way you play…

“Now, I think only a Harry Kane ticks all of those boxes.

“He will do things Pep wanted from Aguero, to be a much better defending player for the team, to get in positions, make it awkward but then be available in the box and have incredible work rate.

“I don’t see too many like that.

“Erling Haaland is seemingly just going to be way too expensive and someone might say Kane is going to be as well, but I’m not so sure because he’s 27, nearly 28.”

Will Tottenham let him leave? That’s the question many are asking and the majority of Spurs fans are fearing before the summer window opens.

Cascarino can see him leaving, though, claiming there could be a clause in his deal that would allow him to leave the club if they failed to provide him with a trophy win.

“Harry might upset a few at Spurs,” added the host.

“I just can’t believe his contract at Tottenham doesnt have some sort of deal in it for him, that suits him if they fail.

“I don’t believe he would have signed his contract and just said, ‘you can charge what you like for me’. I can’t imagine that would have happened.”

Tottenham striker Harry Kane says he hopes to have "a good, honest conversation" with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about his future.

Reports this week claim England captain Kane, 27, has a 'gentleman's agreement' in place to leave the club - and has even formally asked to go.

Speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville, Kane said he would not want to end his career with "any regrets".

"There's definitely a conversation to be had with the club," said Kane.

"It's a moment in my career where I have to kind of reflect and see where I'm at and have a good, honest conversation with the chairman.

"As players you don't know what the chairman is thinking. He might want to sell me. He might be thinking, 'If I could get £100m then why not?' I'm not going to be worth that for the next two or three years."

Kane, who signed a six-year deal with the club that runs until 2024, remains without a trophy after Spurs lost April's Carabao Cup final to Manchester City.

Defeat by Aston Villa on Wednesday means Tottenham go into the Premier League's final day in seventh place - which would give them a place in the new Europa Conference League play-off round.

He added: "I'm sure that [Levy] will want to set out the plan of where he sees it but ultimately it's going to be down to me and how I feel and what's going to be the best for me and my career at this moment in time.

"I don't want to have come to the end of my career and have any regrets. I want to be the best that I can be. I've said before, I'd never say that I'd stay at Spurs for the rest of my career [and] I'd never say that I would leave Spurs."

Currently managed by interim boss Ryan Mason following Jose Mourinho's dismissal, Spurs must beat top-four hopefuls Leicester City and hope West Ham lose to Southampton on Sunday if they are to qualify for the Europa League.

Spurs also lost the 2019 Champions League final, and have not won a trophy since the 2008 League Cup.

Before the match against Villa, chairman Levy admitted the club "lost sight of some key priorities" during construction of the new stadium and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kane continued: "I'm at that stage where people might look at it as, 'he's desperate for trophies, he needs trophies'.

"I feel I can be even better than I have been. I'm not afraid to say I want to be the best. I want to get to the level of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"This season I'm there watching the Champions League, watching the English teams in there doing amazing. They are the games that I want to be involved in."

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, former England captain Alan Shearer said he thought Wednesday's match was Kane's last home game for Spurs, adding "and I don't think anyone or any Tottenham fan would hold it against him".

"He's given absolutely everything for the club. He's been magnificent. For all we know, he might have asked to leave last summer and they've persuaded him to stay one more year.

"There are some big hitters after him. Manchester City will need someone, Manchester United will need someone, Chelsea will need someone."

Harry Kane says he wants to reach level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and reiterates desire to win trophies
Harry Kane says he does not want to end his career with any regrets and has reiterated his desire to win trophies "season in, season out".

The 27-year-old has previously spoken of his desire to win trophies - something Spurs have been unable to do during his time at the club - and Kane said: "I don't want to come to the end of my career and have any regrets. I want to be the best I can be.

"I never said I'd stay at Spurs for the rest of my career and I've never said I'd leave Spurs. People might say, 'he's desperate for trophies, he needs trophies', but I feel like I've still got almost another career to play.

"I've got seven, eight years, kind of what I've already had in the Premier League. So I'm not rushing anything, I'm not desperate to do anything."
Kane is currently top of the goal and assist charts in the league this season and already has two Premier League Golden Boots to his name.

Those achievements mean the England captain is already regarded as one of the best strikers in world football, but he says his "ultimate goal" is match the feats of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - considered to be the finest players of their generation.
Kane - who was speaking earlier this month to Gary Neville's YouTube show, The Overlap - said: "I've still got so much more to give. I can produce better numbers than I'm producing at the moment.

"I'm not afraid to say, 'I want to be the best'. I want to try and get on the level Ronaldo and Messi got to. That's my ultimate goal - to be winning trophies season in, season out, scoring 50, 60, 70 goals season in, season out.

"The pressure from myself is always bigger than anything anyone else can put on me."

Spurs do not want to sell Kane, but the fact that they will end the season empty-handed - and possibly without a place in Europe - will do nothing to convince him to stay.

They have missed out on the Champions League for a second consecutive season, and Kane admitted it has been difficult to watch the progress of City and Chelsea - two of the club's interested in signing him - as they reached the final while Spurs looked on.

"I want to be playing in the biggest games. This season, I'm watching the Champions League and the English teams doing amazing, and they're the games I want to be involved in," he said.

"It's a moment in my career where I have to reflect and see where I'm at. Ultimately it's going to be down to me, how I feel and what's going to be the best for me and my career."

While Kane is keen to leave Spurs, he is only halfway through the six-year contract he signed in 2018, meaning the club are under no pressure to preserve his value and sell him this summer.

Chairman Daniel Levy also has a reputation as being a tough negotiator and is understood to have convinced Kane to stay at the club when he considered asking to leave last summer.

But Kane said of the chairman: "He's been great with me. He's always rewarded me with contracts. I signed a four, five-year deal when I was 21 but I did well and he added to that. So he's been fair with me, we've always had a good relationship.

"But you don't know what the chairman's thinking - he might want to sell me. He might be thinking, 'if I can get £100m for you then why not?' I'm not going to be worth that for the next two or three years.

"I've given the club 16 years of my life, so I hope we can have a good, honest conversation and see where we're at."

Ian Wright makes 'alarming' Harry Kane to Chelsea transfer claim

Chelsea would suit Harry Kane's game down to the ground, claims Ian Wright.

Harry Kane would score an "alarming" amount of goals for Chelsea, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright. Chelsea are one of three Premier League clubs who Sky Sports claim have made contact with Kane's representatives with regard to a summer transfer. The England captain has told Tottenham he wants to leave the club at the end of the season.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also interested in Kane.

Chelsea's bitter rivalry with fellow London outfit Tottenham could make a move to Stamford Bridge that much more difficult.

The Blues could be in the market for a striker, with doubts over the future of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud.

Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland and Inter Milan's Romelu Lukaku have been linked.

However, Wright believes Kane would suit Thomas Tuchel's style of play at Chelsea and reckons he would score goals for fun.

He said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show: "When you look at Chelsea and the way they're playing under Tuchel and how solid they are at the back and how they can get the ball up front, you could see him scoring goals at Chelsea at an alarming rate."

Wright believes City would prefer to wait and sign Haaland next summer when his Dortmund release clause of around £64.6million becomes active.

He added: "I genuinely think that City, if they're going to spend money, maybe Haaland next year at a £70m clause, that sounds a lot better for me in respects of long term, the player he is, and the kind of money they want to spend."

Barcelona deal 'could be attractive' to Chelsea but Tuchel will wait
Chelsea transfer news Harry Kane alarming Ian Wright Tottenham

The former England striker also thinks Kane's injury record would put off City.

"Yes of course [Kane's injury record will have an impact], with the calibre of player they're getting and the amount of money, the outlay," Wright continued.

"City don't pay that kind of money, City are £60m-odd max, that kind of stuff.

"Harry Kane's going into the stage of his career with the injuries that he's had, playing a certain kind of football, I can't see the fit."

In an interview with Gary Neville, which was released on Thursday, Kane admitted a conversation had to be had over his future with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Kane told Sky Sports' The Overlap: "I think so [this is a crossroads moment in my career]. I think it's definitely a conversation to be had with the club.

"Yeah, like you say, I want to be playing in the biggest games. The biggest moments. Like, this season I'm there watching the Champions League, watching the English teams in there doing amazing. They are the games that I want to be involved in.

"I want to be in them games. So for sure, it’s a moment in my career where I have to kind of reflect and see where I'm at and have a good, honest conversation with the chairman. I hope that we can have that conversation."

Harry Kane will soon be the third highest scorer in PL history.

Harry Kane equalled England's scoring record with his 53rd goal - but his night ended in anguish with a 2-1 World Cup quarter-final defeat by France.

Kane levelled Wayne Rooney's mark with a second-half penalty in Qatar.

But the 29-year-old spurned the chance to surpass Rooney when he missed a second spot-kick later in the game.

"It's tough to take for me personally and the team," Kane told BBC Sport. "It will be something I have to live with and take on the chin."

He added: "I couldn't be prouder of the boys. We had better spells, better chances but football comes down to small details - as the captain and the one who missed the penalty, I take responsibility for that.

"I can't fault my preparation or the details before the game. I felt confident taking it, just didn't execute it the way I wanted to."

The Tottenham striker scored his first England goal 79 seconds into his debut in 2015 - the year before Rooney netted his last.

Kane has achieved his tally at a remarkable rate, with his latest coming in just his 80th appearance.

Against France, Kane coolly drilled the first penalty into the bottom corner from 12 yards to make it 1-1.

But with England trailing 2-1, he blazed a second opportunity over the bar in the 84th minute.

"We know how many penalties Harry has scored for us, how many goals he has contributed to even get us here," said team-mate Jordan Henderson.

"He will be stronger for this in the future. He is a world-class striker and our captain. He will bounce back."

England boss Gareth Southgate added: "As you would expect, Harry is very, very low, but he has nothing to reproach himself for. We are in the position we are because of his leadership and goals.

"We win and lose as a team. He's been incredible for us and reliable in those situations; we wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for him."

Former England striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I really feel for Harry Kane. He's a brilliant goalscorer.

"I think there are people out there who think he shouldn't have taken the second penalty. I think he should have. That will live with him forever."

Kane has been in stellar form for England since March 2021, scoring 21 times in 29 games, including seven in the space of four days in World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino in November last year.

He now jointly leads a group of six Englishmen to have scored more than 40 goals for the Three Lions.

Ellen White is England's leading women's scorer, having netted 52 goals in 113 appearances before she retired after they won Euro 2022.

England men's 40-plus goals club
Player Goals Games
Harry Kane (2015-present) 53 80
Wayne Rooney (2003-2018) 53 120
Bobby Charlton (1958-1970) 49 106
Gary Lineker (1984-1992) 48 80
Jimmy Greaves (1959-1967) 44 57
Michael Owen (1998-2008) 40 89

With 49 goal to his name, Sir Bobby Charlton held the men's record for 45 years until he was surpassed by Rooney in 2015.

Kane had just three England goals when Rooney broke Charlton's record, but has scored at a phenomenal rate since.

Of the six players to notch 40 or more goals for England, only Jimmy Greaves has done so at a faster rate - one every 1.3 games compared with Kane's 1.5.

His record haul includes six at the World Cup in Russia in 2018, making him only the third Englishman to win a Golden Boot at a major tournament, along with Gary Lineker at the 1986 World Cup and Alan Shearer at the European Championship in 1996.

He has also broken a number of other England records, including scoring an unparalleled 16 goals for his country in a calendar year in 2021.

Kane still has some way to go if he is to challenge the global record for international goals, which is held by Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 118 goals in 196 Portugal appearances.

His international achievement comes in the middle of what is shaping up to be another prolific club season, with his 13 goals in 22 games in 2022-23 taking his tally of Spurs goals to 261 in 408 matches.

His 195 league goals means he is third in the list of Premier League all-time scorers, 65 behind record-holder Shearer.

Poor Poor Harry Kane, it’s okay to miss the penalty, you did your best, that’s what matters :(

Poor Poor Harry Kane, it’s okay to miss the penalty, you did your best, that’s what matters :(

And that is the reason why England never win anything in football. Failures are okay as long as you try your best. What sort of mentality is that?

Harry Kane has played in three finals for Tottenham. He didn't turn up in any of them. He has played in the Euros final for England and didn't turn up in that either. He has never won anything in his career and is a serial bottler in big games, but yeah sure he is the best striker in the world. :misbah

You should read the post again, a bit more slowly :yk3

Loving the Harry Kane memes.
My fav one is:

“Harry Kane sent the ball to his Majesty”

But it must be really hard to have that feeling after missing the Penalty like that, I can’t even imagine average humans going through that.

He’s a fantastic footballer. His scoring record in what is considered one of the best leagues in the world, arguably the best, speaks for itself.

But there does seem to be an issue that he needs to work on i.e holding his nerve in the absolute top games when the pressure becomes extreme and he is looked upon to deliver.

France captain Hugo Lloris says "it was not easy to find the words" when he texted Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane after his side had knocked England out of the World Cup in Qatar.

Three Lions skipper Kane missed a penalty against goalkeeper Lloris during France's 2-1 win on Saturday.

They will reunite as team-mates on 26 December, when Spurs face Brentford in the Premier League.

"It's a difficult time for the England national team and Harry," said Lloris.

"We had a text after the game. It was not easy to find the words. He needed some time to rest.

"I think he can be proud of what he has done for the national team.

Harry Kane: Tottenham striker can be 'number one in world', says Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Tottenham's Harry Kane is a "machine" who can be "number one in the world", says team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Kane showed no signs of a World Cup hangover and scored a header in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Brentford.

It was the England captain's first match since he scored one penalty and missed another in the 2-1 quarter-final loss to France.

"To underestimate his strength is a big mistake," said Hojbjerg, who got the equaliser.

"He is a machine. He has the quality to be number one in the world.

"The biggest mistake you can do in football is to doubt Harry Kane."

Kane is England's joint record goalscorer with 53 goals in 80 international appearances but in Qatar earlier this month missed a penalty that would have given him the outright lead and potentially taken the match with France into extra time.

After that miss, 29-year-old Kane wrote on social media: "It's come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for.

"There's no hiding from it, it hurts and it'll take some time to get over it but that's part of sport.

"Now it's about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge."

Against Brentford, Spurs found themselves 2-0 down after goals from Vitaly Janelt and Ivan Toney before Kane pulled one back with a powerful header, with Hojbjerg equalising six minutes later.

A section of the Brentford fans chanted "you let your country down" at Kane and Spurs boss Antonio Conte was unsurprised to see his striker score on Monday.

"About Harry I have zero doubt about his mentality," said Conte. "He's facing a strange situation. He had a really good World Cup and also the team played to the quarter-final, then he missed a decisive penalty.

"If you are strong mentally you move on and Harry did this. I think the fans were scared because he is playing for Tottenham, not for what happened with England."

Kane has now scored 13 Premier League goals this season and has 196 in the competition overall, with only Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208) passing 200.

The header against Brentford meant Kane has scored against all 32 teams he has played against in the top flight.

"You wanted Harry Kane to get on the scoresheet because there were a few demons he wanted to put straight," added ex-England striker Carlton Cole on Final Score.

We saw how overrated he is at the World Cup.

The English media have a habit of hyping some of their favourite players to make them look like the best in the world.

Kane is nowhere near the likes of Messi and Mbappe!

Harry Kane moved within one of Jimmy Greaves' Tottenham goalscoring record with a trademark finish to earn Spurs a safe FA Cup passage against Portsmouth.

Moments after Emerson Royal's header hit the post, Kane exchanged passes with Ryan Sessegnon before curling into the far corner from 18 yards.

Kane has now scored 265 Spurs goals, one behind the legendary Greaves.

Fantastic performance from Kane away at Crystal Palace in midweek.

Two great goals and dragged a lacklustre (on the night) Spurs side into a winning position when they had been dominated in the first half.

Emma Raducanu

“Harry’s obviously such a great role model and very professional and I think to be able to speak to him is really cool,” said Raducanu, who was pictured training in a Tottenham shirt last year. “We haven’t spoken so much but he’s obviously an outstanding player, and it’s just pretty cool isn’t it? For someone of his achievements, it’s pretty remarkable how he’s so humble. I respect him a lot.

Kane 'open to signing new Tottenham deal'

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is open to signing a new contract with the club, according to The Athletic.

The England captain currently has a deal at Spurs until the summer of 2024, but Kane will reportedly enter talks with the club after the January transfer window.

The report adds that Kane's priority is to stay and succeed with Spurs.

Amid Manchester United rumours, Gary Neville suggested that "Kane would be a great signing but getting him out of Tottenham is not going to be easy."

Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness agreed with Neville, indicating that the Bundesliga giants could not afford Tottenham's £130m asking price for Harry Kane.

Harry Kane has equalled Jimmy Greaves' record as Tottenham's all-time top scorer with his 266th goal for the club.

The 29-year-old England striker reached the landmark with the opening goal in Monday's game at Fulham, his 199th in 300 Premier League games for Spurs.

Greaves, who started his career at Chelsea, scored 266 goals in 379 games for Spurs between 1961 and 1970.

Kane, who made his Spurs debut in 2011, has played 415 times for the club.

Harry Kane breaks Wayne Rooney's all-time England goalscoring record

Harry Kane described becoming England's all-time top scorer with 54 goals as "a magical moment" that "means everything".

The Tottenham striker scored a first-half penalty as Gareth Southgate's side won in Italy for the first time since 1961.

Kane's strike meant he moved ahead of Wayne Rooney in England's all-time top scorer charts.

"It means everything," the 29-year-old said.

"I was so excited to put the England shirt on and get back out here and get the campaign started for next year's Euros.

"It had to be a penalty and once it hit the back of the net, huge emotion. A magical moment."

Former Manchester United striker Rooney, who had held the record since 2015, was one of the first people to congratulate Kane.

He tweeted: "Congratulations to Harry Kane on becoming England's all-time leading goalscorer.

"I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick. Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend."

In response, Kane told Channel 4: "I was on the pitch when Wayne broke the record. I know what it meant to him and I was so proud of him.

"I remember when I gave him the boot for breaking the record he said he would be giving it back to me one day. A special man."

In team sports, individual honours without trophies mean nothing.

Forget that. Trophies are team achievements.

Harry Kane is class but his record in internationals is inflated by penalties (1/3 of his goals) and bashing minnows like San Marino and etc.

Jamie Vardy has won a Premier League and a FA Cup with Leicester. Yet Harry Kane can't win even a League Cup with Tottenham. He has played in three finals for Tottenham and one final for England. He didn't turn up in any of those matches. People make too many excuses for this guy because he is the golden boy of English football. He is as much responsible as anyone for Tottenham's failure to win a trophy in the last decade. He is a serial bottler in big matches.

I agree that his record is inflated by bashing minnows in qualifies and scoring penalties.

Harry Kane: England & Tottenham striker 'has big decision to make' on future, says Gerrard

England and Tottenham forward Harry Kane has "a big decision to make" about his career, says former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

The 29-year-old, who became England's record scorer with his 54th international goal against Italy last week, has been at Spurs since 2009.

Tottenham have not won any silverware in that time.

"He's got a big decision to make career-wise," Gerrard said after England's 2-0 win against Ukraine.

"I've been there myself, where you're thinking 'is my team good enough to get me the medals? Am I going to get out of my career what I want to get?'"

Gerrard progressed through the Liverpool youth system, making his debut in 1998.

The 42-year-old, who was speaking as part of Channel 4's pundit team for the game against Ukraine at Wembley, said in 2005 that he wanted to leave the Anfield club and had been linked with a move to Chelsea.

But a transfer never materialised and Gerrard remained at Liverpool until 2015, when he joined Los Angeles Galaxy.

Harry Kane says children 'fine' after car crash in Germany

Harry Kane's three eldest children have been taken to hospital with minor injuries after being involved in a three-car crash in Germany.

The crash happened on Monday at 17:15 BST near Munich, where the England captain plays for Bayern Munich.

A local volunteer fire chief told the BBC all involved were "very lucky" no one was seriously injured.

A spokesperson for Kane added: "They are fine and only went to hospital for a routine check-up."

The striker had just landed in London for his team's Champions League quarter-final match against Arsenal the following day when the crash happened, German newspaper Bild reported.

Bavarian Police said a Renault with four people was turning into a junction when it collided with an oncoming Mercedes carrying Kane's children - aged between three and seven - on state road 2071 in Schaftlarn.

The Renault then also collided with a Land Rover.

Bavarian Police said all of the nine people involved suffered minor injuries, including one woman taken to hospital by helicopter.

Speaking to BBC News, Hohenschäftlarn Volunteer Fire Department chief Daniel Buck said: "The cars had a lot of damage - all of the cars. The first thing that we were seeing was a lot of injured people from all the cars.

"The good news was nobody had really strong injuries, more minor injuries, like they have pain in the neck from the head up, normally typical for a car accident.

"Thank God nobody was really injured. It was really lucky for all the people."

Police are investigating the crash.

Kane joined Bayern Munich on a four-year deal in 2023 after leaving Tottenham.

He has four children with wife Kate - Ivy, seven; Vivienne, five; Louis, three; and baby Henry, born last August. The youngest was not thought to be in the car, it has been reported.

Kane's family initially remained in London following his £86.4m move, but earlier this year the family reportedly moved into a mansion in an area nicknamed the "Beverly Hills of Bavaria".

European football journalist Guillem Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues Show this week that Kane was settling in well.

"He has adapted so quickly. His four kids and wife are there, he is trying to learn German," he said.

Inspired by Ronaldo & Messi, Kane 'motivated' by new England start

Harry Kane says he is carrying the hurt of England's Euro 2024 final defeat into the start of Lee Carsley's spell as interim boss - and motivated more than ever to help them win a major tournament.

The Bayern Munich striker will win his 99th England cap when they face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin in the Uefa Nations League on Saturday (17:00 BST).

Speaking on Friday, Three Lions captain Kane said he had not fully got over the pain of the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final in Berlin on 14 July.

"It's tough whenever you get so close to reaching one of the pinnacles of your career and it's taken away," added the 31-year-old forward.

"It makes me even more motivated. It puts the fire in the belly to try and get there. Our task is to get better."

Kane told BBC Radio 5 Live he wants to keep playing for a long time, taking inspiration from several modern-day legends.

"I think when you look at players like [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Luka] Modric and [Lionel] Messi, all these players who are playing in their mid to late 30s, that's the inspiration for me because it shows that you can really play at a high level for a long time," he added.

"I want to play football for as long as possible and at the highest level for as long as possible.

"I use those players for motivation and inspiration to be able to do that.

"I feel I am in a really good place both mentally and physically to have another great season, hopefully that continues for many years to come."

'I've never sung national anthem for Ireland as I wouldn't for England'

Carsley has been given two games as interim boss, but could get more as the Football Association search for a permanent replacement for Gareth Southgate.

Southgate resigned two days after the defeat to Spain.

A win against the Republic of Ireland followed by victory over Finland, also in the Nations League, on Tuesday at Wembley could well help Carsley's cause of landing the job full-time.

The next England manager will not only be expected to take the team to the 2026 World Cup but charged with winning it.

Carsley insisted he was not taking over a team low in confidence.

"I definitely don't see this as a fresh start," he said. "I believe we're in a strong position. They [England] were in a low position when Gareth Southgate took over. It's totally different now.

"Standards are so high. Hopefully they can go that one step further [to winning something]. That last push is the hardest thing."

Carsley will be facing the national team he represented 40 times as a player. When asked by reporters if he would be singing the national anthem he said he would not - but added it had nothing to do with facing the Irish.

"The anthems are obviously a massive part of the game especially with internationals and something I really respect," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I have never sung the national anthem for Ireland as I wouldn't for England. That's just because of my own personal match preparation. I am fully focused on the game.

"When I was playing for Ireland, I always struggled with the wait between the warming up, going back in the dressing room, the walk in the tunnel and the wait while the anthems were on, because usually in the Premier League it was quite quick.

"It has been no different since I have been coaching England Under-21s. It's really in that zone and preparing for the game."

Return 'felt strange' after Southgate exit

Kane described the start of Carsley's interim spell in charge as "another exciting chapter in my England career".

Asked if it felt like a new era, he said: "It felt a little bit strange when we first came into camp.

"The boss has his own ideas and identity. We did a lot of good things with Gareth but ultimately the new coach has fresh ideas. It's been good."

There are four uncapped players in the squad including Newcastle defender Tino Livramento, Lille's Angel Gomes, Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Chelsea forward Noni Madueke.

"There are a lot of young players excited to be here and express themselves," said Kane, who revealed he had spoken to Southgate since the manager stood down.

"It's great for the experienced players as well, I have been playing for nine years for England now. I still remember that excitement from the first camp."

Harry Kane didn't hesitate when choosing if he would prefer to play with Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi

the Englishman picked out Argentina legend and Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi as someone he would have loved to have played with.

Speaking to ESPN, he explained: "I'd love to play with Messi. One of the greatest players to ever play our game.

"I'm sure he'd be able to give me a few assists!"

Kane may have chosen Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo in the team-mate stakes - but in a separate interview with ESPN, he actually revealed that both players were his inspiration and motivation to become one of the top strikers in world football.

"I think of what they've done, they are as good in their 30s as they were in their 20s.

"Me just turning 30 now, it obviously gives me excitement to know if I keep my body in good shape, and I keep my mentality right, I could be playing at the highest level for as long as I want to do it.

"Those players have set the bar - those and a few others as well. It just motivates me and tells me that it's possible [to keep playing].

"It is great watching those players still performing, two of the greatest players ever to play our game."

Captain Kane unhappy at England squad withdrawals

Captain Harry Kane is unhappy with the number of players who have withdrawn from the latest England squad, insisting "England comes before club".

Nine players have dropped out of the squad for Lee Carsley's final two matches as interim manager before Thomas Tuchel takes charge in January.

"I think England comes before anything. England comes before club," Kane told ITV Sport.

"England is the most important thing you play as a professional footballer and Gareth [Southgate] was hot on that and he wasn't afraid to make decisions if, you know, that started to drift from certain players."

When asked if the desire to play for England has drifted this international break, Kane said: "Yeah, it's a shame this week obviously.

"I think it's a tough period of the season, maybe that's been taken advantage of a little bit.

"I don't really like it if I'm totally honest. I think England comes before anything, any club situation."

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Aaron Ramsdale and Levi Colwill have dropped out.

Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite was one of the replacement players called up to the squad, until he became the ninth player to withdraw.

Liverpool's Jarell Quansah is set to be his replacement, having trained with the team for the past two days.

England likely must beat Greece in Athens on Thursday and Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Sunday if they are to be promoted to League A of the Uefa Nations League.

Harry Kane confident Tuchel ‘energy’ can preserve England’s fragile culture

For Harry Kane, it has been a time for straight-talking. The England captain did row back slightly on his comments from Wednesday – the bombshell ones when he wondered whether the unprecedented number of withdrawals from the squad for this window was the result of players “taking advantage” of a tough period in the season.

At one point, as Kane took a break from the preparations for Sunday’s Nations League tie against Republic of Ireland at Wembley – the final game of Lee Carsley’s interim tenure – he expressed a surprise at the wall-to-wall coverage his words had driven. Memo to Harry: Seriously?

Kane said that the autumn camps after a tournament summer could sometimes be overlooked and he had merely wanted to remind everyone – namely the players – that this cannot happen, partly because the culture and togetherness for the next campaign is sown during these get-togethers.

Kane almost walked into trouble because he was asked whether it was a problem that Thomas Tuchel, the next permanent England manager, who does not begin work until January, had not been here to influence that. Well, it’s not all about these camps, the culture does build after them, too – was the gist of Kane’s recovery.

In essence, though, Kane did not budge too far from his original sentiments, which had dominated the buildup to Thursday’s 3-0 win over Greece in Athens, the result that has left Carsley’s team needing victory against the Republic of Ireland to ensure they top their Nations League group and are promoted back to the competition’s A section.

Kane repeated his line about how Gareth Southgate had worked so hard to create a more inclusive environment which the players wanted to be a part of. It was the basis for the runs deep into four tournaments under the previous manager. But was it a fragile thing? “I think so,” Kane said. “It takes a long time to build and maybe not so long to lose if you’re not careful. It’s something that you don’t want to lose as you start to get more younger players into the team.”

Tuchel has signed an 18-month contract. It will be a one-ticket gig – the 2026 World Cup – and he has not disagreed with the notion that it will be win or bust for him. Tuchel will not have long to build but slow and steady has never really been him; rather quick and explosive. The idea is Tuchel will hit the ground running and build irresistible momentum. It normally ends in tears with him after two or three years. The Football Association hope the glory can come first.

Kane was brought to Bayern Munich by Tuchel in the summer of 2023 and the way that he tells it, the plan feels sound. Tuchel enjoys working with English players, as he showed at Chelsea; he likes the English mentality, Kane explained. It is clear that Tuchel has the tactical smarts but it is his energy and motivational skills that Kane believes can make the difference.

“Thomas will experience only having 10-day camps and then not seeing us for a while but in those 10 days he’s going to want to bring as much energy as possible – and I think that will be good to see,” Kane said. “For international football, having that energy in short bursts is really important. He will understand the assignment and that a big part of it will be him bringing energy to the squad. I’m hoping that come March [and his first camp] it will be a real injection of energy to lead us up to the World Cup.”

It did not work for Tuchel at Bayern last season. After 11 straight Bundesliga titles, the 11th that he got over the line after joining in March 2023, his team finished third, 18 points behind the champions, Bayer Leverkusen, leaving him out of work. “I think he found it difficult from the moment he got to Bayern,” Kane said. “There were some bigger issues that I don’t know too much about that didn’t quite work out.”

Top of Form

It was widely reported that Tuchel fell out with key members of the squad but if Kane has seen the value in home truths this week, then Tuchel has long embraced them. Kane believes that a player ought to be able to handle them, although not all do.

“Thomas is pretty straight in how he talks and maybe there were some players who didn’t like that or agree with that,” Kane said. “Each coach has their own way of trying to talk to players, to criticise them, to try and motivate them and not every player is going to love the manager. Probably come March there will be [England] players who might disagree with some things. But I think ultimately the way he wants to get us playing will be exciting.”

Kane did not agree with Carsley earlier in the week – specifically when the manager dropped him for Greece; he preferred to give Ollie Watkins a taste from the start of a high-stakes England encounter. Nobody could remember the last time Kane had been left out for a big game, not even Kane himself.

Was it a shock? “Probably a little bit,” Kane replied. “When he told me, it was like: ‘OK’ … getting my head around it. I wasn’t down about it or worried. I understood where he was coming from. Part and parcel of being a captain and a leader is you sometimes have to take things in your stride.”

When Carsley broke the news to Kane, he said he would return him to the lineup against Ireland. Kane knows what he has to do. To him, the fundamentals have always been everything.

England captain Kane feels he is 'taken for granted'

England captain Harry Kane says he is "taken for granted" and feels people have become "bored" of his goalscoring record.

The 31-year-old is the Three Lions' all-time top scorer and will look to add to his tally of 69 in Friday's opening World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley (19:45 GMT) in new boss Thomas Tuchel's first game.

However, despite his impressive goal return for England, Kane has still attracted criticism in the German media for his performances for Bayern Munich, where he has scored 76 times in 82 appearances.

"It's like when [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi were throwing these crazy numbers out there and the next season they'd score 40 goals instead of 50. It was like they were having a bad season," Kane said.

"People take it for granted and maybe a little bit with England as well. I've scored 69 goals and when you score against Albania or Latvia, or these teams, people just expect it so it's not spoken about so much.

"If I was 25 now and doing what I'm doing, the excitement around me would maybe be a little bit different to what it is now. That's part of where we are with football. I've seen it with some other players as they get into their 30s.

"Maybe people just get a little bit bored of what you do, but I'm certainly not bored. I'm excited for these games and the games ahead."
