[VIDEO] Mashrafe Mortaza - An absolute waste of cricketing spot

Mashrafe in the long press conference on the eve of the first ODI against visiting Zimbabwe was upset after facing so many questions related to his retirement, particularly when the word "self respect" was mentioned

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan Sunday said Mashrafe bin Mortaza should be free to make his own decision regarding his career, and has requested everyone to get behind the cricketer at this point of time.

Mashrafe Saturday made a bold statement to the media over the issue that has been lingering in the arena since the World Cup 2019 in England and Wales in July last year.

Mashrafe in the long press conference on the eve of the first ODI against visiting Zimbabwe was upset after facing so many questions related to his retirement, particularly when the word "self respect" was mentioned.

“Like I have said many times before, we do not have any replacement for Shakib [al Hasan] as a cricketer and Mashrafe as captain. There is no way to undervalue his [Masharfe’s] contribution in Bangladesh cricket. We are trying our best to give him the opportunity, which we do not usually do,” said Nazmul during an interaction with the media at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

“What I think about his press conference [Saturday] is that you [media] guys were poking him, pressuring him, the time when you have to support him, you guys are giving him more pain. I think we shouldn't discuss about it, he said what he wanted to. Who will be the captain, the board will decide. He (Mashrafe) will decide when he wants to retire.

“It (new captain) can be anyone. And when he will retire, that depends on him,” said Nazmul, who is serving as BCB president for the second consecutive term.

Ahead of the three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, Nazmul had stated that the series would be the last for Mashrafe as captain.

Nazmul had also mentioned that following this series Mashrafe would have to prove with his performance and fitness that he deserves a berth in the national dressing room.

Mashrafe in the press conference Saturday had mentioned of being available for Bangladesh’s next assignment, the last phase of the three-part tour of Pakistan in April, if selected.

“Yes, he [Mashrafe on availability on Pakistan tour that comprises lone ODI and the second and final Test] was supposed to say that, and he said exactly that,” said Nazmul.

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza will step down from the leadership role at the conclusion of the team’s ongoing three-match series against Zimbabwe, which his side have already won with a game to spare.

Mortaza’s decision comes in the wake of the Bangladesh Cricket Board announcing that the Zimbabwe series would be his last as leader, after which he will have to prove his form and fitness to be considered for selection.

Mortaza, for his part, said that the decision to step down was his alone, while adding that he will remain available for selection. "I am leaving the Bangladesh captaincy," Mortaza said on the eve of the third ODI in Sylhet, on Thursday, 5 March. "The third ODI [against Zimbabwe] is going to be my last game as captain. I took the decision myself. As a player, I will keep trying to give my best if I get the opportunity. I wish the next captain all the best.

"I am everything due to cricket. If I didn't finish playing cricket, I would have been doing fish farming."

"I believe that Bangladesh team will reach the next stage under him. I will try to give him all the support through my experience. The three available senior players each have the ability to lead the side. Hope the BCB takes the best one of them."

Mortaza, who is a member of the Bangladesh parliament, said that he will remain involved in cricket once he winds up as a player, whenever the time comes. "I am everything due to cricket," he said. "If I didn't finish playing cricket, I would have been doing fish farming. My future definitely includes cricket, and if a player requires me, I will give it my best. I have to do my work in my constituency until the next election."

Mortaza is, by far, Bangladesh’s most successful captain in the format. He has led the team 87 times – a national record – and won 49 of those games, also the highest for a Bangladesh captain.

Most notable among Mortaza’s achievements as skipper include leading them to the quarter-final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017. Bangladesh also picked up famous series wins over Pakistan, India and South Africa under Mortaza’s leadership.

No Role For Mashrafe Mortaza In Bangladesh Cricket Team: Bowling Coach

Bangladesh bowling coach Ottis Gibson doesn't see a role for Mashrafe Mortaza in the 2023 ODI World Cup and said now is the time for the former skipper to bid adieu to international cricket.

The 36-year-old Mortaza, who claimed just one wicket in eight matches in last year's World Cup, has in the recent past often faced questions on his retirement, but the experienced seamer still hasn't divulged his plans.

He had given up the ODI captaincy during Bangladesh's last home series against Zimbabwe in February this year.

Gibson said Mortaza need to find a new role to contribute to Bangladesh cricket and doesn't see him in head coach Russell Domingo's plans for the 2023 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India.

"I think if Russell is now trying to build a team for the future, then I don't know what part Mashrafe will have to play in that. Perhaps now is his time, with all that's going on in the world, to move on," Gibson told Bengali daily 'Prothom Alo'.

Cricket activities around the world stand suspended currently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has so far claimed over 31 lakh lives globally.

"He can find other ways to pass on his vast knowledge and experience to the young guys. I don't think he has to be on the field to be able to pass on what he has learned over his career. He needs to find other ways to pass on that message."

Gibson said Domingo will have to give the youngsters more opportunities in order to build a team for the next World Cup.

"With the next World Cup in 2023, any international coach will now start to build a team. I am quite sure that's what Russell will be thinking," said the 51-year-old, who had assumed responsibility as the team's bowling coach in January.

"So he would want to see players like young Hasan Mahmud, (Mohammad) Saifuddin, Shafiul (Islam) and Ebadot (Hossain). We haven't seen Ebadot in white-ball cricket yet. There's Taskin (Ahmed) and Khaled (Ahmed) gets fit again. We have Hasan and (Mehedi Hasan) Rana. So there's a lot of young cricketers in the country."

Gibson, however, said that fast bowlers need more opportunities in the domestic set up if Bangladesh were to taste success away from home.

"The bowlers genuinely have a lot of skill but they lack in experience. They only get one spell in domestic cricket. Even if they pick two fast bowlers, the captain generally tends to go to the spinners if there's a crisis. The fast bowlers never really get to bowl in pressure situations," he said.

"It is a very different story when we go abroad. We are relying on the fast bowlers to do the job away from home but they lack in experience in closing out games, even back home in domestic cricket. We must look at the way we play domestic cricket."

this guy is probably the most useless player to play for any team, and that is a big achievement considering how many useless players have played for BD

Maintaining the same stance. A hero for Bangladesh regardless of how mediocre they are as a cricket nation and how embarrassingly low his pace level is.
