[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Mohammed Siraj - Performance Watch

I really like him.

Pakistan could do with a bowler like him... my, how times have changed; looking at the parosis fast bowling crop enviously.

Unpopular opinion perhaps but I somehow feel he's over rated. Sure he has a 5fer in Australia and a 4fer in this game but i feel he isn't top tier.

A few of his wickets seem lucky and he doesn't really bowl unplayable deliveries neither does he set the batsman up from what I've seen.

That said, I don't want to be harsh, and I would really like to know from other posters who rate him, as to why they rate him.

Do you think he can pick 300 test wickets?

No - Bumrah will possibly struggle to get to 300 unless he stays fit and plays regularly up to around 34.

He should be opening the bowling with Bumrah in Tests and ODIs. India shouldn't be playing more than 3 fast bowlers in a Test match, overkill. Bumrah and Siraj accompanied by a fast bowling all rounder instead of Shami/Ishant.

5 Wicket haul at Gabba.
4 Wicket haul at Lord's.

In Short career, He dismissed Steve Smith, Joe Root.
He has shows that he is going to become a big test match bowler for india.

There are no fast bowling allrounders in India. May be someone like Shardul Thakur can do that job? :inti

Siraj is test match bowler. Let's see what he will do in the future where as Thakur isn't test match material. You can be 100% sure he isn't going to take 100 test wickets. Personally I don't think he is even going to take 50 test wickets.

In Tests Thakur has taken 2.2 wickets per innings with a S/R of 38.50, whereas Siraj has 1.6 wickets per innings with a S/R of 62.30.

Thakur can crank up his bowling speed to 148 kmph.

WhatsApp Image 2021-08-07 at 11.51.21 AM.jpg

I have no reason to believe that if Thakur played the same number of Tests as Siraj, he would end up with less wickets.

Siraj has come along at the right time. Ishant and Shami have served well but are clearly on their last legs. Maybe 12-18 months more if at all.

Looking forward to see how Kartik Tyagi goes this Ranji season.

No - Bumrah will possibly struggle to get to 300 unless he stays fit and plays regularly up to around 34.

Bumrah being the Rolls Royce isn't playing more than 5-6 tests a year. So yeah, not going to compete in raw numbers game. But. He'll be someone who's going to win India more matches overseas than *any* other player - batsmen included - has done overseas.

Just love this guy's never give up attitude. Every team needs a player like him.

7 Tests in and he's playing as if he has played 70 Tests.

I like his attitude, I like the fact that he is in the face of the opposition and has no fear.

Well he's taken on Australia away and England away and risen admirably to both challenges. Quite a bit of FC experience before he debuted may have helped, but he's a strong character.

I like his bowling but his antics are over the top - what with the shushing & sledging. Though i guess it all is fine till he can back the talk!

You can unearth players like Siraj, Pant, Rahul… when there is proper system, high quality domestic coaches and selection based on merit. Both IK and Wasim Khan can learn something from this.

As a hyderabadi, I'm so happy and proud of Siraj. Wish him more success.

I like his attitude, I like the fact that he is in the face of the opposition and has no fear.

He tends to overdo it, really wasn't impressed with his antics to Olie Robinson. He gets white line fever a little too much imo and its not good as it brings out his inner Sreesanth aka idiotic behavior

I would credit the IPL (or the pajama league as our Bhaag Viru Bhaag likes to call it) for his attitude. He first played for the IPL back in 2017 and was paid $350,000. These sort of things build confidence in young men, and also a desire to work hard to get better as they know they will be rewarded for performance rather than sifarish.

Dude - this guy won India the game. I'm surprised KL Rahul got the MoM. 8 wkts is definitely better than 130 odd runs. Moreover he demolished the tail in crunch time (final session of the test) and we've seen in the same test how tailenders can stick around and disrupt your plans. Huge performance from this guy and India's bowling attack just seems to be getting more and more formidable.

Yeah, that's not in dispute. His ratio for the number of games he goes on to play should be top-tier but to get to 300 would be a struggle. The 180-220 he may or may not get to, should be taken at a rapid rate at good average/strike rate etc. Of course contributing to/being the catalyst for Indian wins.

The original reason for mentioning it is that if Bumrah is unlikely to get to 300? Siraj even less so but doesn't detract from his menace.

The last time I saw anyone bowl fast cutters( or that's what they looked like) was Paul Reifel against England in 1993 at Edgbaston. This guy looks possessed when he is bowling

Mohammed Siraj is a beautiful story that can always invoke an entire gamut of emotions — sadness for the tragedies he has endured, thrill for the way he is attaining mastery over his craft and joy for his success at the highest level.

A match-haul of eight wickets at Lord’s recently was a testimony that success Down Under earlier this year wasn’t a mere flash in the pan and the Indian cricket team’s most adorable ‘miyaan’ is here to stay for some years.

Siraj is one of the multiple stories of grit and glory chronicled in a new book on Indian cricket — ‘Mission Domination: An Unfinished Quest’ — co-authored by Boria Majumdar and senior PTI sports journalist Kushan Sarkar. The book has been published by Simon & Schuster.

The manner in which Siraj scythed through the lower-order with two sets of double breakthroughs just when it seemed the match was meandering to a draw, not only spoke volumes about his high skill-sets but also gave a peek into his mental fortitude in pressure situation.

This Indian team management always knew that Siraj is cut out for the big league having watched him from close quarters during the tour of Australia, when he lost his father Mohammed Ghaus, who died after a brief illness.

An excerpt from the new book reads: ‘Siraj had lost his father during the statutory period of 14 days hard quarantine in Australia in November. What this meant was that none of his teammates could even go to his room to give him a shoulder to cry on. At the time there were cops outside every room just in case the Indians tried to violate protocol. They were being guarded as prisoners who could export Covid to Australia!’ ‘As a result, his teammates were on video calls with him all day and were concerned he wouldn’t do something drastic or damaging to himself.

Only the physio could go to his room to treat him, and Nitin Patel used the window to go and console the young man who was in mourning.

‘Siraj broke down on multiple occasions, which is only natural but never gave up. He was steadfast and resolute. He wanted to fulfil his father’s wish of doing his best for India and when the opportunity came his way at the MCG on the huge occasion of the Boxing Day Test, he just did not want to let it go.’ Before his Test debut on the Boxing Day, Siraj had played a few white ball games for India without much success and wanted to make it count.

‘In fact, he said to us he was abusing himself for failing and coaxed himself to push harder on debut. ‘I was telling myself that I had done nothing worthwhile in the white ball games. And here are the same batsmen — Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, who I had bowled to and had success against while playing for India A. Then why couldn’t I do so at this stage? I had to. There was no turning back’.’ The 13 wickets in Australia earned Siraj overnight stardom.

‘Siraj did not turn back. 13 wickets later he ended up as India’s highest wicket-taker. It was only fitting that his teammates handed him the tricolour during the team’s victory march. He was so much more than a cricketer. He was a young boy who had turned into a man in the course of the two months in Australia.’ The book also has anecdotes on how Rishabh Pant and Navdeep Saini performed in the most hostile confines of Delhi District & Cricket Association and how Dinesh Lad convinced a teenaged Sharduk Thakur’s father to allow him to come to Mumbai to give himself a fair shot at top flight cricket.

Arvind Pujara spoke at length about how his son Cheteshwar went and played an U-19 match days after his mother’s death, without shedding a drop of tear. How fielding coach R Sridhar told a hamstrung Hanuma Vihari that he owes the team and needs to save the Sydney Test.

Seems Siraj in the thick of it again - did a 1-0 gesture at the crowd

He has a good f.c class record and was selected for test series against westindies last year,I got frustrated when the likes of shardul Thakur was selected in playing xi ahead of him but what makes me more fustrated that shardul only bowled 2 overs and got injured.

Hope this time no Shardul Trundler Thakur.

Should have debuted 2 years ago. But no! Shardul Thakur was the man BCCI picked

Did they pick Shardul for Tests? Siraj in my opinion, is best suited for Test cricket.

Only a bewda or a ego maniac or a lobbyist will pick Thakur over Siraj.

Highest wicket taker in the Gabba Test. Scores a 56 to get India out of a batting funk. Takes the critical wickets of Pope (1st innings) and Burns and Root (2nd innings). Siraj bowls with his usual passion but returns figures of 86/1.

You guys want to change your opinion of Thakur?

And more underestimating of Thakur. No cheap tailender wickets for him. Remember, he took Pope's wicket when Pope had scored 81, Burns wicket to break the 100 run opening partnership and finally the critical wicket of Root.

I think he deserved the MOTM on the basis of his 57 in the first inning. I am pretty sure we would not have won without his contribution in the first inning. :inti

A big upgrade over Pandya as someone I know would say :)

Absolutely. He deserved Man of Match because his 60 in second inning and the breakthrough of Joe Root in second inning guaranteed India's win :inti

https://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/how-sirajs-new-ball-burst-laid-foundation-for-spinners-to-skittle-out-new-zealand-for-62-7656153/

Just after 1 pm on Saturday, Ajaz Patel dismissed Mohammed Siraj to complete a historic ten-for – only the third ever in Test cricket – and end the Indian first innings in the second Test at Wankhede Stadium. Just after 3.30pm, he was back in the middle for an unbeaten one-ball stint at No. 11 as New Zealand crumbled in 28.1 overs for 62 – the lowest-ever total by a team against India.

On a day when the perfect ten was achieved for the first time since Anil Kumble’s feat against Pakistan in 1999, and as many as 13 of the 16 wickets to fall went to spin, it was the three that fell to pace that set the tone for the day. And in keeping with a day on which a Kiwi spinner registered ten wickets in an innings against India in India, an Indian fast bowler outbowled two New Zealand pacers.

After Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee had sent down 34 wicketless overs on a Wankhede track made for spin, Siraj ripped through the New Zealand top order in just 13 deliveries.

Siraj nipped out Will Young and Ross Taylor with some away nibble, and in between, consumed stand-in skipper Tom Latham on the hook. Siraj does not have Southee’s banana outswing, nor does he have Jamieson’s awkward bounce.

What he does all the time with his manic energy — most evident in his bustling run-up — is create this sense that something is about to happen soon. And often, he does make something happen.

Siraj would later say that he had seen the New Zealand pacers bowl wider and that had only made it easier for them to be left. So he decided that he would target the off stump and try to move the ball away. That is exactly what he did.

The inward angle on the off-stump line made both Young and Taylor play; the away seam movement took Young’s edge to second slip and uprooted Taylor’s off stump. “A dream delivery for a fast bowler,” as Siraj said about the latter.

The plan to Latham was clear in the lead-up to his wicket, and he still fell for it. Four of the five deliveries from Siraj to Latham were short or short of a good length. The sixth was dug in sharp and short with long leg and deep backward square leg waiting. Latham could not resist and picked out the latter man.

Siraj knew he would not get much of a bowl on this pitch and went flat out with the new ball. “I knew I would get a spell of 3-4 overs and wanted to bowl with full intensity and in the right areas,” Siraj said.

The 27-year old from Hyderabad had been out for a couple of weeks after suffering a split webbing while fielding off his bowling in the first T20I against New Zealand in Jaipur. When he resumed training, he said he did a lot of single-wicket bowling with the aim of getting the ball to move and consistently hit one area.

Admittedly, Kanpur was a lot slower and lower, but this was the sudden, stinging burst that India had missed in the first Test, with Ishant Sharma not quite finding his radar and rhythm.

It was just the start of the sixth over, and New Zealand were already 17/3 and ripe for the picking for India’s three spinners. Axar Patel would strike with the first ball of his second over, Jayant Yadav in his very first over, and R Ashwin with his very first ball.

It was a given that the Indian spinners would be hard to handle on a track given just how much purchase Ajaz had got. But Siraj’s surge had roughed New Zealand up so much that they just caved in. When No. 8’s 36 deliveries is the longest any batter has lasted in the middle, it tells you everything about what has preceded him.

The left-hander Henry Nicholls’ dismissal summed up New Zealand’s predicament. Ashwin came first ball from round the stumps and tossed it up outside off. Nicholls pushed forward to defend, assuming some away turn. But there wasn’t any as the ball slid in with the angle between bat and pad to strike off stump. To say that Ashwin was too good right away for Nicholls’ hopeful forward defence would be an understatement.

They went caught off the outside edge at slip, they went caught off the inside edge at leg slip. They went to tumbling catches at short leg, they went to rebound catches off the wicketkeeper at silly point. In short, it was all happening, and there was nowhere to hide.

India rubbed it in when they did not enforce the follow-on after a first-innings lead of 263 runs. Having bowled nearly 110 overs across three and a half sessions, New Zealand were back in the heat and humidity within three hours for more punishment.

One of the options to accommodate the incoming skipper Kohli for this match was to make Cheteshwar Pujara open. That happened in the second innings, as Shubman Gill had taken a hit from Nicholls on the elbow while fielding at forward short leg and did not come out to bat.

Pujara nudged his first ball from Ajaz for four and even pulled him later over the deep midwicket boundary, his first six in Test cricket since the Pune Test against South Africa in October 2019. He’d yorked himself charging out to Ajaz in the first innings but he now stepped out and drove him for four through extra cover.

Agarwal, who had stretched his first innings to 150 in the morning, kept batting fluently, hitting six fours. He and Pujara closed the day with India 332 ahead, shutting the door firmly on New Zealand.

If Siraj doesn’t perform against Pakistan then he will be labelled a traitor or accused of taking money from ISI like Shami was during t20 wc

Siraj has the tools to do well & he proves again and again in different conditions that even more important, he has the brains to figure out a way to be effective with those tools.

He's essential now to the Indian attack and a very good bowler. I respect him a lot.

In the faces of the opposition.

Working batters out.

Bowling to a plan.

Attacking the batters.

Brilliant to watch.

Brilliant find.moulded into a good bowler by BCCI talent development. Gave him full exposure to play all the A tours in various countries to hone his craft. He was playing local tournaments till age of 22 and was not in the radar at all.
Great zeal and enthusiasm too hopefully he goes long. 200 wickets is the first target for him.

Special bowler and he's figured something out that I haven't exactly been able to put my finger on. It's to do with his ability to move the ball both ways off the pitch. He basically uses a partially scrambled seam( 3/4th seam I think it's called) to bowl off-cutters and leg-cutters. What really astonishes me is that when bowlers normally bowl cutters, they lose pace and carry once the ball bounces. Siraj's cutters however go through with speed, bounce, and carry, almost like standard seam deliveries. His stock ball is basically jagging left and right off the pitch at 130+ kph.

It's really impressive and quite unique from what I've seen among global bowlers. Most bowlers either try to swing the ball or try to bowl orthodox seam. His bowling technique is really quite unusual. Don't know if anyone else gets the same impression?

Temba Bavuma hopped before going down in pain as Mohammed Siraj hurled a throw back at him and hit him accidentally during Day 5 of the Centurion Test between India and South Africa. Bowling the 62nd over of the innings, Bavuma defended a ball back to Shami, and as it rolled back to Siraj, the fast bowler, in the heat of the moment, picked it up and threw it back, catching Bavuma flush on the shin.

Immediately upon copping the blow, Bavuma started hoping before Siraj walked up to the South Africa batter, apologising to him and keeping his hand on his shoulders. However, the impact of the blow was such that Bavuma went down, forcing the physio to rush to the ground to treat Bavuma.

Play was halted for a brief period as Bavuma received treatment. Thankfully, there was no long-term damage and after the while, Bavuma was back on his feet and carried on.

This throwing the ball back at the batsman must stop. It seems like Siraj does this more than others. He needs to be fined.

And do you think that will happen?

I can only hope that at some point ICC will take notice of this. It has become cool to now throw the ball back and look all pumped up. Hope cricket will not continue to go this way.

Poor from Siraj. Should stay away from these antics and instead concentrate on his bowling alone.

Finally someone speaking sense:

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar was slightly unimpressed with Mohammed Siraj attempting to run out Temba Bavuma, which saw the India pacer unintentionally hurt the South Africa batter. In the 62nd over of play of Day 5 of the first Test in Centurion, Siraj picked up the ball and inadvertently threw it back at the batter hoping for a run-out, but Bavuma hadn't even moved out and he copped the blow on his shin.

While the world of Twitter did not take too kindly to Siraj’s act, Gavaskar feels the 27-year-old fast bowler should be talked to in regards to aggression.

"There was no attempt to take the run. You are a little bit aggressive; you've gotten a bit carried away. But if there was an attempt to run, it would have been understandable. He's there. He didn't take the run. There was no need, absolutely no need for that. Siraj should be spoken to. At the end of the day, how gracious Temba Bavuma was when Siraj gave him the thumbs up," Gavaskar said on air.

The Bavuma episode aside, Siraj has made improved by leaps and bounds. If 2021 is to be carefully glanced, Siraj's rise is perhaps the biggest individual positive for Indian cricket. The way he started off at the Boxing Day Test and led the Indian pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav, claiming a five-wicket haul in the Gabba Test was a sign of greater thing to come.

He kept it up in the Test series in England grabbing a four-for as India completed a historic win at the Lord's cricket ground. Siraj was in hot form for his IPL franchise RCB as well, and was one of the four players retained by the franchise for the next season. And the 27-year-old quick ended the year on a high with disciplined bowling against South Africa in Centurion.

Prophetic post from yours truly from 4 months ago. India very fortunate that Siraj pulled a hamstring. Otherwise he may have been given a 5 over spell and no more like happened in the first Test.

Siraj is test match bowler. Let's see what he will do in the future where as Thakur isn't test match material. You can be 100% sure he isn't going to take 100 test wickets. Personally I don't think he is even going to take 50 test wickets.

After this innings he has 23 wickets, so at his current pace he may get to 50 after 4 more innings :))

People told me to go drive auto with father: Mohammed Siraj reveals MS Dhoni's advice helped ignore critics

Mohammed Siraj has revealed that it was advice from former India skipper MS Dhoni that helped him ignore social media trolling and overcome the criticism.

Over the last year or so, the rise of Mohammed Siraj has been one of the most inspirational stories of Indian cricket. In his debut Test series just a few days after the death of his father, Siraj played an instrumental role in helping India beat Australia away from home in a historic victory.

Since then, he has become a mainstay of the Indian Test team and also earned a call-up the T20I and ODI side. He was also one of just three players to be retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction.

While Siraj has risen to prominence in the last 12 months, that was not always the case. His maiden appearance for India in both T20I and ODI cricket saw him bowl expensive spells while his performances in IPL also did not impress many. This led to him being subject to a lot of criticism

Talking in the RCB podcast, Siraj has opened up on the trolling he had to face after a game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). "When I bowled two beamers against KKR in 2018 (2019), I received a lot of criticism. People even told me to leave cricket and ‘go drive auto with your father’. There were so many comments," said the Indian pacer.

Siraj revealed it was advice from former India skipper MS Dhoni that helped him rise above the trolls and ignore the critics. “When I was first selected for India, Mahi bhai told me one thing; 'Don't listen to anyone. You will play good today, and everyone will praise you.

"Tomorrow, when you perform badly, the same people will bring you down. Never take an opinion'. I remember people trolled me so much back then. The same people call me the ‘best bowler’ now. I don't need to listen to that. I was the same Siraj then and I am the same Siraj now," said the RCB fast-bowler.

So what's happened to him in IPL - not seeing too much hype coming his way?

"Brainless Cricket": Why Commentators Were Fuming After Mohammed Siraj's Delivery To Rahul Tewatia
IPL 2022: Mohammed Siraj has taken eight wickets in 10 games but his economy rate this season has been plain dreadful.

Rahul Tewatia and David Miller starred in a chase yet again as Gujarat Titans notched their eighth win in nine matches in the ongoing IPL 2022 season. Tewatia in particular is making a name for finishing off things when the team's backs have been against the wall. And yet again the left-hander produced the goods as GT beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets on Saturday. With GT on the backfoot at 95 for four in 12.5 overs, Miller and Tewatia got together to forge a 79-run unbeaten stand off just 40 balls. For RCB, the bowlers once again failed to live up to expectations in crunch situations with the team paying the ultimate price for it.

Mohammed Siraj, who was retained by RCB ahead of the IPL mega auction, was once again taken for runs and despite taking two wickets was disappointing overall with his line and lengths.

Much would have been expected from the fast bowler, but he has failed to live up to expectations so far this season. He has taken eight wickets in 10 games but his economy rate of 9.39 is just plain dreadful for a bowler of his potential.

In the 13th over of Gujarat's chase, Siraj strayed on to the pads of Tewatia who smashed it for a boundary. The delivery from Siraj left Simon Doull and Matthew Hayden scratching their heads.

Speaking about the delivery, Hayden said that an U-12 cricketer would have hit for a boundary.

"There is one of those boundaries we are talking about towards the short side of the ground. An U-12 cricketer could have played this away to the ground," said the former Australian opener.

The former New Zealand fast bowler was especially critical of the delivery.

"Some brainless cricket. I gotta say, I have seen a little bit of it in the last couple of overs from our commentary box end. Use the big size of the ground, take pace off it, go across the left handers, stop bowling down that middle, middle and leg stump line and help yourself to the short side boundary stuff," said Doull while on air.

In the next few balls, Siraj finally managed to get his radar right, and did exactly what Doull was asking for in the com box.

"Thank you. Two balls in a row," the New Zealander expressed his relief.

The defeat left RCB in a precarious position. They still are in fifth position in the IPL points table but have played two games more than sixth-placed Delhi Capitals and a game more than seventh-placed Punjab Kings both of whom are on eight points -- only two points behind RCB.

Mohammed Siraj was retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping Rs 7 crore ahead of the mega IPL auction.

The team would have expected a lot from the Indian pacer in IPL 2022, but instead Siraj's performances this season proved to be a damp squib.

So much so that he was even dropped for a match. He, however, returned to the playing XI for RCB's playoffs matches but yet again failed to rise to the occasion. On Friday night, when the team needed him to put in a good performance, Siraj once again had a nightmare outing. He bowled just two overs where he was plundered for 31 runs.

Siraj was smashed for three sixes in the two overs he bowled against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 and in the process, registered a record he would quickly want to forget.

Siraj has now conceded the most number of sixes in a single edition of the Indian Premier League. He has been whacked for 31 sixes in IPL 2022 season.

His teammate Wanindu Hasaranga has been hit for 30 sixes this season, but in all that has managed to take a whopping 26 wickets, making him the joint-highest wicket-taker with Yuzvendra Chahal this season.

In fact, thanks to his economy rate of 7.54, which is slightly better than Chahal's, Hasaranga currently leads the Purple Cap race.

In comparison, Siraj has an overall economy rate of 10.07 this season and has taken only nine wickets in 15 games.

Before the 2022 season, West Indies star Dwayne Bravo had held the unwanted record, having been hit for 29 sixes in the 2018 edition.

Chahal, who has been a revelation for RR this season, features twice in the top 5 list. He conceded 28 sixes in the 2015 season and in IPL 2022, he has been hit for 27 sixes.

RCB pacer Mohammed Siraj had a forgettable outing for the franchise in IPL 2022. The pacer leaked runs at an economy of more than 10 and took only nine wickets in 15 games, conceding 31 sixes, the highest by any bowler in the tournament’s history.

Siraj’s poor show also invited a lot of harsh criticism and trolls on social media platforms. The pacer is one of the most promising red-ball pacers in India and will get an opportunity to make amends in the series-deciding fifth Test against England. Speaking about his poor show in IPL 2022, Siraj said that the tournament was a bad phase for him, adding that he will work hard and come back stronger.

“This season the IPL was a bit down. The last two seasons my graph was up and this time it has come down. But then I see what I have done in the past two years and take that along,” Siraj told PTI on Wednesday. “This year was a bad phase for me but will make a strong comeback by working hard. I will work on my ability, believe in my strengths.”

Siraj is also hopeful that he will do well in the fifth and final Test of the postponed series against England. India leads the series 2-1 and the final game of the series will be played at Edgbaston from July 1-5.

“My preparations are going well for the Test. There in England, the Dukes ball is used, it is always good to bowl there in the English conditions and it is helpful for the bowlers,” the Hyderabad-based speedster added.

Siraj believes that it is very important for India to win the Edgbaston Test and the series to boost their position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.

“This Test is very important for us and we are leading 2-1. It is good that the Test has been rescheduled and we are confident (of doing well) as we have the lead, it is a good feeling,” added the right-arm speedster.

“The important thing in a Test match is your line and length and how consistently you can bowl at one spot. That is what I have learned, the same thing I have learned in Australia and my aim is to perform consistently for the team and bowl in one area and create pressure. Even if I don’t get wickets, my aim is how I can put the opposition in pressure,” Siraj said.

Ahead of the England tour, India will take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series. Senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have been rested from the series.

1 wicket so far for Mohammad Siraj - needs to support Bumrah now

2nd wicket, gets Broad.

Brought back on to attack the tail.

Indi made a blunder in ignoring him for wtc final. He would have helped them win.

Taken to cleaners today. Went at 6.4 when his team desperately needed some control.

So far in this match against England at Edgbaston he has conceded 130 runs in 21.3 overs.

That's not great even by ODI standards.

Watching him I sense a bit of Haris Rauf in him - some good deliveries, plenty of awful ones and always liable to lose his cool.

Exceptionally good signing.

Good for Siraj. Already Umesh, Sundar & Pujara have had good time this season. Hopefully Siraj will too. W

Mohammed Siraj has had two good matches in Zimbabwe so far, leading India's attack from the front with the new ball.

India's new ball weapon Mohammed Siraj underlined hitting consistent areas as the key to his success in the ongoing ODI series in Zimbabwe after another tight spell from him played a part in India beating Zimbabwe and going 2-0 up in the series.

Siraj, who finished with figures of 1/16 in eight overs in the second ODI, had also impressed in the first with his control.

“In West Indies and England also I bowled well, my rhythm was good in the first match as well, so my plan was to hit an area consistently without worrying whether I will get wickets or not,” Siraj said.

A non-regular in the limited-overs setup, Siraj played a big role in helping India control the scoring rate early on.

“I just kept belief on myself, because ups and downs are part of everyone’s life, so I just kept belief that I can do it no matter if it is a white ball or red ball.

“So just wanted to keep hitting the right areas and bowl dot balls to build up pressure on the opposition. Starting with the new ball, I went for wickets a few times but as you know white ball doesn’t swing much, so I was planning to consistently hit one area and bowl maiden overs.”

Siraj bowled as many as four maidens in the two ODIs so far in Harare, and the pressure he has applied from one end has helped yield wickets at the other.

Siraj also highlighted the role of VVS Laxman, who is acting as the head coach on this tour in Rahul Dravid's absence.

“Laxman sir was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad [in the IPL] when I was selected for the first time. He understands my skills and gives me a lot of confidence and it feels good when a coach is around."
