He probably would shake her hands if no cameras were around

Any video?

And this is a thread for Major to comment

Silly for Afridi,,,

Then why am i expecting anything but silly from him

idiotic-Maybe they should let organisers let the protocols. Had the boot been on the other foot and she had refused to shake his hand, she probably would have been sacked and accused by the victimhood brigade of being anti muslim or some rubbish like that.

And yet many women refuse to shake the hands of men. Well within his rights was Afridi here and I'm sure he explained why he didn't want to shake hands.

Yet another "bash Afridi" comments above. Maybe just maybe he didn't realise and actually didn't see the hand extended?!

Stop bashing Afridi.

I'm sure if Hasan Raza would have been around, Afridi would have been more than willing to shake the lady's hand.

I can't believe people are suggesting his does all this bravado only for the camera.

Maybe the fact that he is Muslim is the reason he didn't shake the hand. Some people may believe it is OK, but it is clear in the Qur'an not to shake hands with an opposite gender. Business or not, it don't matter.

If an olympian can refuse to shake Kate Middletons hands, then how can you people say bad things if Afridi does it and jump to your own conclusions.

DON'T JUDGE OTHERS WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW!

Can you quote the verse which specifically says that

Except polite people try to follow the culture of others

I love it how SOME Muslims always want to have it their way. But they are the first ones to cry victim when the shoe is on the other foot. Some cultures might not want to see women covering up. Some cultures might not want to let people eat beef, etc, etc. Tomorrow if someone tries to follow their culture/religion and ban something, you would be the first one to complain.

Imo in the SC these gestures by the opposite gendre are uncommon & are sometimes interpreted as being bold

Many people can be taken aback when they are faced with such situations .

I dont think it has any religious or racial undertones.

If he did it for religious reasons, I don't think there is any reason to bash him.

its his belief and culture, I mean japanese dont shake hands period (pretty much) is that rude ?

Afridi is like the royal Family, not to be touched by common people.

In all seriousness, it is on his own religious grounds so it is fine. He is strict in his deen and i don't see why we should make a massive fuss about it.

Or maybe he didnt see it :))

So, I honestly do not know what to think of people who cannot shake hands with the opposite gender without having any negative thoughts in mind.

the fact that first thought that comes to your mind is something bad, and hence not to do it ...when somebody offers a hand shake is weird...

Well it's not just Muslims, one of the Indian posters was saying Brahmins won't even eat from the same plate as a lower caste or Muslim or Christian because the believe them to be unclean. Personally I find this lack of willingness to shake hands rude and embarrassing but I can't tell people how to live their lives.

afridi needs to get with modern times and get out of the stone age

that's very rude and some may view it as sexist

afridi never one to stay out of controversies

he could have quite easily have done a slight bow and a smile to girl and say thank you and she would get mssg in a nice way.

But afridi is afridi lol

I never shake hands with women.

However, I make sure I let them know in advance or politely nod at them with my eyes looking down.

To ignore them like that, imo, is rude.

It's probably a culture thing more than religious aspect.

I'm sure other players would have done but it's his choice he didn't want to.

Why dont you shake hands ?

It is his interpretation of his religion. I've met Afghans and people from that region, it seems to be a common belief in that region. No one should be criticized for not performing a greeting they are uncomfortable with.

Such a shameful act by Afridi, the lady was so nice and offered just a handshake (not a handjob) and he embarrassed her infront of the camera and people, This really show the fundamentalist traits in Afridi. I feel sorry for the lady, should never present check to this brainless fellow.

Really :O what's wrong with you? its not like they are gonna bite you or anything!

I hope Afridi explained his reason before or after directly or through another person. Poor lady, but I feel it's a valid reason (Islam) but if its due to anger then he should apologise.

Making a fuss out of nothing to be honest. But then again, celebrity life is tough and people watch each and every move of a celebrity.

Forget about it and move on.

Some people may have geniune reasons to not shake hands like religion, or whatever but he should have tipped his hat & said thank you & not kept her hanging

He could have handled it better, do what many others do, just place hand on your chest as a sign of respect,

I shake women and men's hands because I live in the year 2014 which is in the 21st century.

Lady wanted to shake hands, but the Beast was not in the mood. :))

I posted about this in the match thread yesterday. I thought the lady was embarrassed, but she managed the episode well by smiling it off.

My Italian colleague before resigning to her job tried to give me a hug before she left. But she confirmed with me if I am ok with it.

I asked her why she wanted to confirm. She said in her previous job, some subcontinent dude made a big issue out of it when she tried to hug him.

Looking at the video, Afridi looks very serious - perhaps he had more sobering thoughts on his mind?

Shaking hands in not a definite no no in Islam. But some follow it more closely than others.
The key thing is to ensure that if you dont plan to (and that too the sponsors) you make it a point to let them know in advance.

I've seen him shake hands with women before. Just one of those didn't see it moments.

+1. Little bit of politeness is in order :)

May I ask why some people dont shake hands with the opposite gender??

Dont have anything against it, just confused as to why something as simple as a handshake might be considered too far by some.

On this case: Well as the pics above show its not a religious thing, to me he looked really angry at something, didnt smile or anything, so while I dont think he meant any disrespect to the woman, it was a bit rude.

Nothing more than that however.

It's Afridi's choice as to who he shakes hands with.......but at the end of the day the incident must have been quite embarrassing for the PCB and sponsors etc.

In his defense he was not even looking at her and posing for the camera.

The sponsors pay for the series so whoever organized it should have checked first

A girl all dolled up in flour and baking powder refused to fist bump me at a Shisha lounge here in Canada, because she was married and it would be inappropriate. Why did I offer a fist bump because we both supported Imran Khan or something dumb like that. But yes, these sort of things happen and it's nothing to get offended over.

I didn't get offended if a pretty married girl felt that her temptations may get the best of her if her fist touched mine. In fact, the temptations aren't her fault either.

Yes that is true. But if his reason for not shaking her hand was because she is a girl then that is sexist and wrong.

Yes but it could be argued that the PCB team management may have known that this lady would be part of the presentation party.

Wow!!! Hypocrisy much Lala?! I wonder what happened to Lala's self righteousness here? And to all the Afridi clones who claim that he didn't see her extended hand, get real. He clearly saw her hand and ignored it. Watch the video again or stop denying.

Wow!

Didn't Afridi once imply that Pakistani women shouldn't play cricket and should instead be in the kitchen and cook? Even if there was no intention here, there is a possibility that Afridi might be sexist.

How do you know he saw it?

Also some people get more strict and get more religious as they grow up. Maybe he was more flexible on the issue in the past.

This thread should be stickied. It is actually hilarious how butt hurt people get over a non issue.

Can't speak for Afridi, but when in such situations I avoid a handshake but if the lady is not Pakistani/Muslim I do a handshake to avoid rudeness. However, the girl in the footage seems to be a Pakistani so she should have known the culture and should have been aware of it. Can't see anything wrong with what lala did!

I think discussion here is deviating from cricket. Religion is a very sensitive issue for many, including me. Those who do not follow any religion or are loosely attached with a religion sometimes casually make remarks which can be offending to those who believe in a religion. I request the mods to please delete the post or at least please request everyone to avoid bringing religion in this. If he did it on religious purposes, it's perfectly fine. This forum is not the place to discuss why it is not allowed in religion and all that.

No problem with him not shaking hands its his choice but he should have at least acknowledged her. Afridi does seem to care for his little girls a lot and is not shy to mention them and give them opportunities to talk to media and so on so I wouldn't call him sexist but still the least he could have done is acknowledge the young lady.

Yet, your tolerance levels for others is fit for a caveman.

Yes that is true. But if his reason for not shaking her hand was because she is a girl then that is sexist and wrong.

Its got nothing to do with the girl, its a religious commandment that Afridi follows.

Before u make an ignorant comment support ur statement with some evidence if you have studied religion, you would know that in islam men and women are of equal stature, blind faith is sad....

When did he say anything about equality? Its a well known fact that touching a non-Mehram is forbidden in the Deen.

Guys, let's stop the religious stuff in this thread.

Maybe if you want to discuss such stuff start a thread in the Time Pass forum.

For those who think Afridi didnt see her stick her hand our for a hand shake, pretty sure he's looking directly at her hand before he quickly turns his head away.

Yes clear evidence that he did see her outstretched hand but chose to ignore it.

I like how every time there has been a man handing the reward he reaches out and shakes the hand and the one time it is a woman he just happens to "not see it" lol. Could've at least looked at her and politely declined.
