The assassination attempt on Imran Khan left the entire nation and the world reeling, but in a recent interview, the cricketer-turned-politician has shed rare light on the traumatic experience his family, especially his sons living in the UK, went through following the gun attack on him.

In a wide-ranging interview with British television presenter Piers Morgan, Imran talked about the elements allegedly involved in the assassination attempt, the personal cost he and his family incurred in the wake of the attack as well as his take on Pakistan’s relationship with the US and his views of Rishi Sunak becoming the British prime minister.

Here are four talking points from the interview:

‘My sons were quite worried’
Imran spoke about the shock his sons, from ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith, felt after learning about the assassination attempt.

“The moment I reached the hospital, after two hours, I spoke to my sons and of course I spoke to my wife who was quite relieved but my boys were quite worried and I hope to see them soon.”

Imran disclosed that his eldest son (Suleman) always differed with his decision to join politics. “He was quite worried when I was shot,” he said.

The ex-PM also played down the threats to his life, saying “we don’t have any control on our life, it’s all in Almighty’s hands”.

‘They will target me again’
Imran said that the gun attack on him was “actually an attempt to permanently silence” him for “exposing the elite capture” who were strongly opposed to an “outsider” aiming to bring about a change in the current political system.

“These powerful people will try to target me again because they have a fear that my party will sweep the next elections,” he told the interviewer.

“They will try again, hence I have enhanced my security at home.”

Imran insisted that rule of law is something that is the difference between a civilised society and a banana republic. “One thing that is keeping us back is we do not have justice in Pakistan.”

Imran once again lamented that he could not get a case registered against three “important people,” following the armed attack on him, saying “one of the nominees in our complaint was an intelligence officer”.

“Imagine what a common man goes through in this country. When he comes against the powerful, he is helpless.”

When asked who he could trust in the system when he was cynical about the ruling elite of the country, Imran responded “it’s the chief justice of Pakistan” as he was the one who could hold a fair and impartial inquiry into the attack.

The Junta will regret its terrible treatment of IK and his family. When push came to shove it was only the PTI that stood with PK. Where was NS and gongi daughter? Where was AZ?

Well, he can use his sons now for emotional blackmail

But he didn’t care about his family when he was on his extreme ego trip to cause mayhem in Pakistan.

Islamabad court orders jail authorities to allow Imran’s contact with sons, check-up by personal physician Tahir Naseer

A special court in Islamabad on Tuesday instructed the Adiala Jail authorities to allow PTI founder Imran Khan to hold a telephone conversation with his sons abroad and also be allowed a medical checkup by his personal physician.

Last month, Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand approved two petitions filed on behalf of Imran related to the requests. The court had sought a response from Adiala authorities to provide the facilities.

Today, the judge heard a request by the prison authorities against the court order and dismissed it

A report to the judge from the jail superintendent on Monday had called for the court’s orders on January 10 and February 3 to be reviewed and set aside due to “being inconsistent and contrary to the basic rights and principle of recognition of the inherent dignity and equal inalienable rights of inmates”, arguing that extending the two facilities to Imran would be against the spirit of the Constitution, as well as Pakistan Prison Rules.

A court order issued today, available with Dawn.com, said the judgements passed on Jan 10 and 28 and Feb 3 were passed after taking into account all relevant factors and could not be received without any solid reason and thus, the jail superintendent’s request was turned down.

The order instructed the superintendent to “strictly follow” the three orders in “letter and spirit”. The hearing was adjourned to next Wednesday.

A day prior, Imran’s sons — Suleman Khan (28) and Qasim Khan (26) — had called attention to their father’s incarceration. The two, in a rare public appearance, had appealed for his release, claiming that their phone calls were set up with their father at odd times with limited duration, adding that the failure to miss the calls “meant going a long time before they could talk to him again.”

They had further claimed they spoke to Imran only once every two or three months.

Imran, imprisoned since August 2023, is serving a sentence at the Adiala Jail in the £190 million corruption case and also faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the May 9, 2023, protests.

And yet the little puppet gets vip treatment in a jeep etc. The junta make me sick. We were all.with the jawans as they fought of the horde from the east. But now is the time to unite the nation. Alas they are not interested. I hope we can see Khan out soon and the nation united. But for some reason they think this is the right way. The PAF saved our blushes and the jawans fought bravely. But that's their job.they should stick to that..leave the politics to the people.

Very intelligent young men .

The government crooks will attempt anything to break IK but wont work.
Unfortunately they don't need to do anything now. They can leave him there. The whole thing worked out for them. All we will have is memories.

I think this won't end well. IK isn't going to back down because if he was going to do so, he would have done it and as we know the Junta believe it's their right to rule PKs for eternity. The problem is that as long as there is no law, there isn't a constitution and as long those that seek plots and positions are in control, PK cannot develop in any meaningful way.

Since when has fighting for the rule of law been an ego trip. Since when has fighting illegal govts been an ego trip. By your pathetic logic, only the N Korean system should exist as all opposition would be outlawed

There are rumours that Imran Khan might be released from jail. The army is reportedly pushing for war with India, while the government is against it. The army plan, according to some, is to release Imran Khan so he can say “absolutely not” if America calls for a ceasefire

Imran pivoted from criticising the whole establishment to focus on Asim. It was a gamble but it has likely failed because Asim Minor has solidly established himself. Now it will be difficult for either side to bury the hatchet without looking silly.

tbh asim munirs rep is fairly high atm, he could ease imrans conditions, and if he steps out of line just put some new charges on him and stick him back.

History repeats itself. In pakistan.

For every fatima jinnah, bhutto, imran. There are jurnails ayub, zia, asim. To put the former under arrest. And kill the rest with impunity.

The only anomalous matchup was nawaz vs. musharaf. The former's ethnic background circumvented early demise.

Pakistan needs a public figurehead like Imran Khan. Personal issues between big egos should not be allowed to fester to the detriment of the country. A compromise should be reached, and if it means easing up on the facade of a sham democracy, the people would probably accept that.
