Imran suffering from ‘serious’ eye infection: PTI

The PTI on Tuesday claimed its incarcerated leader Imran Khan was suffering from an “extremely sensitive” eye infection, which could damage his eyesight permanently if not properly treated, while his sisters questioned the veracity of the claim.

In an official statement, the PTI, quoting ‘credible journalistic sources’, said that the former prime minister had been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion in his right eye, which had caused a dangerous blockage in the retinal vein.

“Doctors have stated that it is an extremely sensitive and serious medical condition, and if timely and proper treatment is not provided, there is a severe risk of permanent damage to his eyesight,” the party claimed.

The PTI claimed that the jail administration was insisting that the treatment should be carried out within jail but doctors were saying that the treatment was not possible within the limits of the jail.

The party stated that a petition regarding Khan’s medical check-up had been pending before the court since August 2025 but had not been heard. It urged the government to allow visits by the family and friends in light of the report about the infection in his eye. It has demanded that the treatment be allowed at Shaukat Khanum Hospital or any other reputable hospital of his choice.

Claims about treatment at Pims

However, Imran’s sisters contested the report that their brother was suffering from an eye infection and underwent treatment at a state-run hospital in Islamabad on Saturday night.

According to a senior doctor at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, the ex-premier was brought to the hospital under strict security on Saturday night for the procedure, which took quite some time. “Whatever procedure was going on, it was completed when the time reached in the am. So we can say that he was taken back on Sunday,” he claimed.

The doctor said there was “extraordinary movement” on Saturday night and the operation theatres and the anaesthesia room were cordoned off ahead of Mr Khan’s arrival at Pims.

Another doctor, however, denied this and said it was better not to discuss it as the PTI would make an issue out of such a development.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala jail, Aleema Khan, however, said she was not in a position to confirm this news.

“We have not been allowed to meet our brother for the last three and a half months. How has this news been leaked out to the media and who has told a journalist about Imran?” she wondered.

Uzma Khan said she met her brother for 20 minutes on December 2 and he did not mention anything about his eyesight during that visit. She recalled that Mr Khan had mentioned something about his eyes in a previous meeting that was held two months before their Dec 2 meeting, saying that only eye drops were given to him. She said they were not aware of his eye condition since they were not allowed to meet him in jail.

Noreen Khan said that if the news regarding Imran’s eye was correct, it should have been shared with the family. “They test us by spreading such rumours and have done it in the past. However, if they tried to damage Imran’s eye, their eyes would not be saved,” she warned.

PTI MNAs file fresh plea

Also on Tuesday, PTI MNAs arrived at the IHC to file a fresh petition seeking permission to meet Mr Khan.

Speaking to the media outside the IHC, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that Tuesdays were the designated day for meetings with Imran.

He said that the party leadership had approached the IHC chief justice multiple times but had not been granted a meeting.
