[VIDEO] New Zealand win 1st Test by 101 runs despite heroics by Fawad Alam (102) and M. Rizwan (60)

NZ have luxury of runs and knowledge that they only need one more wicket, hence the over attacking field placing.

Don’t think so. Sarfraz’s ship has sailed...

His technique isn't very good either. He arches really low when he bats and as a result, the ball that comes into the pads is hard for him to negotiate. He is a fine player of spin though, and I honestly don't know if he's going to do as poorly as Haris Sohail has done.

Maybe there is a chance for him in the next game, who knows.

Impressive by Fawad- somehow he knows how to survive and guy will be a run machine in Asia. Sadly his best 10 years were wasted....

We have wasted Fawad’s career. Easily could’ve been a 45+ averaging bat!

A lot of the cracks that would have been papered over had we won the first Test (and hence the series) against ENG have been exposed in all their glory here. Even without digging into the older scorecards, some obvious patterns listed below.

The potency of the bowlers, the "anchorage" that comes from seniors, patterns in the dismissals of the openers.

- Wasn't Shan strangled down the leg side at least once? Maybe I am mistaken but also against SAF (correct me if I am wrong)
- Azhar, Abid and Fawad's shortcomings are obvious
- Haris (managed to avoid the tour; conclusions from 2018 tour and AUS tour stand)
- Rizwan (drives hard the ball without bending front knee. This means being susceptible to being caught behind if he misjudges length or the ball moves, or if he does not get to the pitch while driving (i.e. scooping) the ball, he will play it in the air. I hope everyone noticed that NZD positioned a catching short cover for him too)

Really good points here.

Haris is turning into a lost cause now.

We are repeating the same mistakes on the field (dropping catches, failing to correct techniques, etc.)

The point of a coaching staff is not to pass on stories and experiences, and force different techniques and playstyles into players. It's about looking at the faults in the players, working on them, and developing the players into something better. Shan Masood didn't even get help in Pakistan, if I'm not mistaken, he went to train in some facility in England.

True. He could replace Haris for the next game. Let’s see what the management does.

I don’t think he’s been tested on fourth/fifth stump line properly this innings. Swing has also finished. Looks like a prime candidate for a nick the way he squares up after his 3-step trigger movement

Rizwan has improved so much in the last two years. Wonderful to watch his recent progress.

Shows value of a discarded cricketer going back to domestic, identifying his shortcomings and then working on his game to improve them. In last 15 years I think I can only remember Hafeez and Asif doing that as well.

Almost all our players who get dropped instead whine about how they were dropped ‘unfairly.’ Those who do knuckle down and go back they just play as it was before rather than thinking what are the weak aspects of their game they need to improve on. And obv domestic is lower standard so they normally end up doing well in domestics without ever Really improving any skill set or aspect of their game. And when they get called back they get exposed again for the same shortcomings.

If he was back to 132-135kph range he would be back taking wickets. His discipline is immaculate. Did not give any lose balls which is why he had such a good economy rate.

However his delivery is coming so slow that the batsman can adjust and negotiate. The 4-5kph he has lost are really the death knell.

If I'm not mistaken, it was a shoulder injury before the Australia tour. Concerning how he hasn't been able to bring his pace back after 1 year. Shocking.

So its been a while a test has gone to 5th day in NZ. As per commies its the first time Jamieson is playing on a day 5 of test match.

Harris has only himself to blame. Your natural ability and talent will take you so far. If you don't remain disciplined as far as taking care of your fitness, diet and working hard on your game, your form will eventually suffer and other teams will work him out as well.

Yes, and the problem is half of the side has not gotten the memo that from 2010 onwards and the advent of T20, the athletic and fitness standards have gone up.

Someone I looked up to a lot, Younis Khan, was not even remotely as gifted as MoYo or Inzamam. However, I was not surprised 10-15 years ago when he started excelling, scoring in 4th innings and finally when he surpassed both of his more gifted contemporaries.

Haris wants to go in the opposite direction. And he's fully cognisant of his downward trajectory but indifferent and oblivious towards its implications. He's among those PAK cricketers for whom getting selected is the fulfilment of their dreams. Not the YK, Babar school of thought where selection is the start towards fulfilment of ambitions.

Pakistan are probably safer going for the win here

NZ will leak runs in desperation

We don’t appreciate our cricketers enough, to be completely honest. People are steamrolling the bowling but they’ve done fantastically in this match. They were let down by the fielders and then by the batsmen who collapsed like no tomorrow. I repeat Kane Williamson’s slowest century stat again. Full credit

Yep. Asides from Rizwan and Faheem rearguard, Abbas and Naseem’s discipline in New Zealand’s first innings is the reason for that. Not many wickets but no cheap runs given on part of those two so had to batt long. Even Yasir was decent surprisingly. Imagine if Naseem wasn’t leaking runs for fun and going at almost 4 per over.

Love Wagner’s attitude!

What i hate is our player’s attitude. Why have they become so timid? How can you let someone curse you in the face and not say anything back? I still remember how Afridi and Miandad used to give it back to the bowlers.

Yeah it's hard as spectators to sympathize with a team that makes the same mistakes over and over, it gets to a point where it becomes annoying and infuriating.

This two have to carry till 100 overs (2nd ball) - Faheem won’t last long if he comes into bat against new ball. Still 80+ overs to go - what’s the weather update?

Exactly bro there is just no fire in the belly of our players!

Our bowling wasn’t threatening though. So were never in a position to win the game. Other sides may have lost games too but were in with a shout till day 3 a few times.

I wonder if Naseem had shown discipline and not leaked runs at 4 an over would that have put pressure on the Kiwi batsmen and induced mistakes out of them.

Sun shining and don’t see a cloud lol.

Great post bro. Haris himself is the reason why he hasn’t achieved what he should’ve with such potential.

Think he should get dropped and Pakistan should bring in a youngster instead of him!

Sadly, yes. The way things are going, at the end of this tour there should be vacancies at Numbers:

1-3, 5 and 7 of the batting line-up. I have a feeling we'll keep Abid for the series against SAF given it is at home and given he's more regularly posted in comparison to Shan since the tour of ENG in the summer. Which means Imam may come in unless M. Wasim has other plans.

lol What the heck? There is nothing here to be lucky about.

It doesn't matter whether you are in the U.S. are not, the matches are happening at the same time no matter where in the world are you watching from.

Yes, it's all pretty obvious; however it's a two fold problem. And we should probably try to come up with some solution when we identify a problem.

You said you got trundlers in the national team?

Well, your Shaheens got all out yesterday for 97 and miserably lost the game (this match was also happening in the same time regardless of whether you are in the U.S., are not).
So there goes your bench strength.
Trundlers not only rule in your national squad but they are rampant in your Jr. Squads too.

Our domestic cricket standard is absolutely poor enough to be able to continuously churn out international quality batsman and we have a SEVERE lack of talent.
These "Talent spotter" threads on PP are as cringe worthy as it gets.

And the second problem is indeed Misbah and Waqar.
Whatever little talented player shows up in domestic and we try to fast track him into the national team, gets slaughtered by these two.

LOL, your focus on the US portion of my comment is...interesting. I more so meant that both matches start in the evening, so it's a convenient time to watch both side by side.

To your second point, I would gladly have Pak get smoked with a team full of youngsters, then with a team full of hacks who've been around for ages or are on the wrong side of 30. It's simple really, if your going to lose, at least lose by giving yourself the best chance to succeed. With Misbah/Waqar at the helm and these Trundlers who always resurface, how can we ever expect to keep up with the likes of Aus, Eng, Ind?

I agree our bowling was not bad in first inning badly letdown by fielders and the non review of Williamson.
Whereas for many other teams fielders take blinders.

Had we played a decent bowler instead of Naseem, we might have forced one of the two options to occur:

We would have taken wickets with the added pressure and restrictsd the run flow, allowing us to compete for the win.

We would have made it take longer for New Zealand to reach a respectable target, making the draw more likely.

He is too young to play, and Waqar Younis is doing nothing to make him into a better bowler. He hasn't improved since the England series, and that's partly because of how he has been used but also because of his lack of discipline.

Wagner bowling looks so harmless and predictable if Pak were on top this match he would have gone for plenty.

Wagner is better off having no leg side fielders to Fawad. There is more chance of him making Fawad play the hook

It’s as good a day 5 wicket for batting as I’ve seen.

Think Abid will be a monster on dead, flat tracks :))

We should bring in Haider, Abdullah and Saud Shakeel in the playing XI.

Give the youngsters some experience and groom them!

Hopefully M. Wasim will look into these matters.

Think Shan worked with Gary Palmer or someone with a similar name. Alastair Cook's coach or something. I think a lot of the errors are manifesting, as they often do with PAK, in terms of failure to execute the basics. They are over-thinking and second-guessing their shot selection and running, dropping catches etc.

Having said that, a half decent line up on this pitch could have given these NZD bowlers a run for their money. There's nothing devious about the pitch.

I disagree actually. Batsmen like Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor don’t give you their wicket over and over again. Our slips were too far back, catches weren’t taken, and DRS reviews missed.

Our bowling did well. You need an exceptional, exceptional bowler like Cummins to generate those nicks again and again otherwise even he can’t do it all day if Australian fielders don’t take catches.

To that end, Shaheen, Abbas, Faheem all did well even though we wish Abbas could bowl at 135kph. He can’t, and isn’t as penetrative as he used to be, but he still created the opportunities and bowled very well. Yasir took wickets too despite it being a first day track, you can’t expect him to not be expensive. Naseem was the only real issue - and that’s the management’s issue for selecting an unfit player, not his.

Total tuk tuk mode.
There is no intention to take a run at all.

They are just waiting for the enviable to happen in hopes full doing tuk tuk for 100 overs and draw the game.

Tbh this Wagner short stuff is pointless. Pak have no reason to play at it

I am fine with that as long as Abid at the very least scores big at home. His more regular 30s have meant that he's often "contributed" more than Shan. His presence in the field will be a liability and we'll have to see how long he remains a part of the squad after scoring at home.

Fitness isn’t Naseem’s issue. Limited skill set and lack of readiness for this level is.

Yes his selection is the management’s fault but probably also a sly move on their part because they know they are giving the fans the ‘toffee’ of playing a 17 year old ‘talented’ bowler of the future...

Solid Fawad

I wasn’t sure about his selection but boy has this guy stood and fought for us

Tbh there is nothing fascinating about Wagner’s bowling.

I’m not a fan of bouncers so yeah... yorkers are more fun to see.

I think he has the perfect skillset for that enforcer’s role like Archer or Wagner. Why doesn’t he?

Would say that NZD supersede even IND in field placements. If they had an off-spinner and if Misbah was playing on this pitch, I think they would have employed a similar field to what IND did for Smith.

But overall, these guys go with each of their plans per batsman with 100% conviction. If Wagner is dishing short stuff there will not be just one sweeper on the leg side. There will be 2-3 sweepers. When they think someone is likely to chip the drives in the air, they will bowl in the area and keep their fielders in play.

Kane's done incredibly well to get the most out of them. Would say probably captain of the decade in terms of cricketing acumen. Kind of like Misbah's polar opposite lol.

When did Fawad start using the Chanderpaul stance? Is it just a 4th innings variation or is he always like this now?

I so want Fawad to score atleast a 50, he is the sort of gutsy player with focus that Pak need.

After what happened with Naseem, I won't play Haider nor Abdullah until both have had two complete seasons of FC Cricket.

This is a good variation in the NZ attack. The guy probably releases the ball at 8ft and he gets natural bounce on a good length. Plus all the angles he comes in from

When did Fawad start using the Chanderpaul stance? Is it just a 4th innings variation or is he always like this now?
He has always been like that and it's because of his unorthodox stance Swlwctors robbed him 10 years of test cricket despite scoring a century in his first stint.

We need to find a #3 man.

I guess Azhar can be used for another year or so until Haider Ali or Zeeshan Malik are ready. Or try Usman who just made a double ton at #3.

For the next series, Pak can play: Imam, Butt, Azhar, Babar, Fawad, Rizwan as the top 6.

And if Fawad fails then Saud can come in.

On a positive note, PAK actually have done well to play out 150+ overs here; but there was absolutely no attempt by the batsmen to score, hence scoreboard didn’t move. I think on any tracks, one has to play shots and move score board.

This is very typical of Misbah’s batting with lots of dots and a bang in between.... here just the bang was missing.

Interesting. Places like Sri Lanka are really open to unusual techniques. England not so much.

I wonder how Steve Smith would have come up the ranks in some countries.
