Gloucestershire have signed former Pakistan International bowler Mohammad Amir on a three-match-deal.

The 30-year-old left-arm pace bowler will be available for selection for The Shire’s upcoming LV= Insurance County Championship matches against Surrey, Hampshire and Somerset. Amir has played in 36 Test matches for Pakistan and has 119 Test wickets to his name. The overseas signing will provide Glos with an experienced seam option as cover for the absent Naseem Shah, who will be unavailable for selection until the T20 Vitality Blast campaign.

Amir has linked up with the Gloucestershire squad in Lancashire and will be in-line to make his first-team debut for The Shire against Surrey at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol, on Thursday 28 April.

Speaking of his excitement at signed for Glos, Amir said: “The County Championship is an amazing competition and I can’t wait to get going with Gloucestershire. I love playing in English conditions and I’m feeling really good, so I hope I can perform well for the team.

“I’m excited for the challenge and will try my best to help Gloucestershire win some matches.”

Amir made his Test debut for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in 2009, at the age of 17, and claimed six wickets in the match. By the time he was 18 Amir had become the youngest bowler in history to take 50 Test wickets. After soaring to international stardom as a teenager, Amir went on to enjoy a successful international career and made a combined 147 appearances in IT20, ODI and Test matches over an 11-year period.

Amir also has previous experience of playing in English cricket having enjoyed two spells at Essex as an overseas signing in 2017 and 2019. In 2017 he featured for Essex during their title-winning County Championship campaign and in the T20 Blast campaign, in which he took a combined 28 wickets across both competitions.

Most recently, in December 2021, Amir represented Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament and played alongside Gloucestershire’s Benny Howell. From there, just before the turn of the year, he went on to play for Galle Gladiators in the Lanka Premier League in Sri Lanka, and made six appearances to help the side reach the final of the T20 competition.

Steve Snell, Performance Director at Gloucestershire Cricket, said: “We are delighted to have signed a bowler of Amir’s calibre. We will sadly be without Naseem for a few weeks due to injury and while we help him get back to full fitness, Amir will provide us with quality and international experience in our seam attack for what is a strong first division competition.

“Amir fits the bill perfectly for what we need and we’re confident he will be a great addition to the squad for those three matches. He has indicated his hunger and desire to make pivotal contributions during his time with us and we look forward to making him feel welcome in Bristol with Gloucestershire.”

30 year old? I very much doubt that lol

These guys are wasting their money but it’s a 3 match deal I suppose.

Maybe he wants to return after Ramiz is sacked but either way he is done.

he hasn't bowled more than 4 overs in a match for about 2.5 years. Bizarre selection.

Strange that Amir has signed this deal. He earlier claimed his body wasn't capable of playing 4 or 5 day cricket.

With his dwindling T20 demand (Didnt get a contract in the hundred 2022 as well) maybe he wants to try red ball cricket again as otherwise his cricket career is not looking much bright currently. Though not sure whats the end game in his mind here.

It could be another brown quota selection following the excellent work by Yorkshire recently.

Thank you Azeem Rafiq :)

I'm pretty certain he wants to start playing international cricket again. Leagues have been easy money for him but the lack of proper competitive cricket can only keep you going for so long.

It’s all about the cash. He’ll obv get paid better for this than domestic red ball cricket.

Not sure how he’ll hold up, but I’d be interested to see if something has re-ignited in him

Your latest reminder that Amir is a fraud who is only interested in making money rather than being incapable of playing red-ball cricket, as he earlier claimed.

But then again, he does look like he will not take back his retirement so personally, I couldn't be happier. More power to him. I hope he makes as much money as he can, just as long as he stays away from the national side.

Not exactly much choice around at this stage for a last minute injury replacement for just a few games. Also won't necessarily play every game (conditions dependant), he's competing for the same spot as Zafar Gohar.

I suppose it's a case of he was probably going to be in the UK anyway and may as well play some cricket and make some money rather than sitting around.

Hmm this is a good point. Maybe he doesn't have an international comeback on his wishlist after all.

What a waste of money by this team. No wonder they gave zafar gohar a contract aswell than

Well good for him. Playing Mirza Premier League wouldn't pay his bills. He is unlikely to be picked in any other league barring LPL and PSL.

He bowls 78 mph cutters 75% of the time these days. I think he can cope with red ball cricket with that approach.

I know Amir is at a downhill for all the right reasons but if was competing for spot in the white ball team with Hassan Ali, I would still take him any day of the week.

pbly low on funds, which is ironic given he destroyed his career to run after league money.

LOL he just wants to stay relevant no one even remembers him anymore
No one talks about him no one cares about him.
He is forgotten now and i m pretty sure he will not be picked in PSL anymore.
He has been very useless in almost every league he has played of late.

I don't know if I agree with you. Amir for me has steadily gotten more and more limited with the passage of time. He was outstanding at the 2019 World Cup, a tournament that had pitches which offered swing. But without pitches offering him something he comes across as a highly mediocre and average medium pacer.

Hasan Ali has been out of form in limited-overs cricket for quite some time. But when he is performing he simply blows Amir out of the water for me. He is quicker, more skiddy, and a better practitioner of reverse-swing.

As a fan of fast bowling and as a fan of young Amir, I would love to see what he has left if he dedicates himself.

Unfortunately I don’t think he has the love for cricket anymore. He is just happy to do the bare minimum. That is why we see 70-80% slower balls / cutters from him.

The strange thing is he might actually pick up some wickets in county cricket because the pitches sometimes help these dibbly dobbly bowlers.

It’s a sad state of affairs what he has become - from the heights and ability of 2009/10 to just being a dibbly dobbler is a real shame

Money talks. He was always interested in Money right from the start. We all know what happened in the spot fixing case

Mohammad Amir makes his debut for Gloucestershire

0/21 in 10 overs

Not much happening for him 0/45 in 17 overs on his debut so far.

Going to be a tough ask these 3 matches given his last first class match was 32 months ago in August 2019.

Going to be a tough ask these 3 matches given his last first class match was 20 months ago.

He is a fraud, after all the big talk that he retired due to the need to protect his physical abilities and longevity, how did he manage to bowl 17 overs in a day after such a long lay off ?

Mo. ‘easy paisa’ Amir will always bend his back if you throw a decent few quid at him.

The guy is capable (although a bit past it now), but doesn’t always want to grind and wants max sums for the least amount of effort. He’s going to have a nice little pay day out of these 3 mini games.

Seems Amir's luck - catches go down:
==

A return to county cricket for Mohammad Amir, recruited for the next three games, proved a chastening affair as the Pakistani Test star bowled with express pace but no luck, twice falling victim to fumbles in the slip cordon as the hosts paid the price for not taking their chances.

Apart from the odd gully mohalla league, what has Amir been doing to maintain elite fitness and performances over the last 2 years?

Wickets falling but nothing for Amir

0/66

No surprise Hes ineffective now and has been for a while

Pace will be down and he ll be going through the motions Its a waste of money for anybody who thinks hes a decent option in any format now

I thought Last year’s The Hundred may have opened some of these counties’ eyes at just how finished amir actually is (despite nasser hussain trying to big him up).

It seems they need another dose. It would be better to get someone like Dahani if Naseem was injured

I find the express pace bit very hard to believe. He hasn’t bowled express for 12 years

LOL Amir 0-80 in an innings where every bowler except the part-timer took atleast one wicket.

Gloucs already ruing this decision.

Tbh, they would have been better off just singing a good Pakistani domestic bowler like Mir Hamza or Imran Khan. Hamza already has experience playing for Sussex and Imran Khan is someone who would have been perfect for those seaming conditions.

Faheem Ashraf would have been a good signing aswell.

I'm sure those hamstrings will be feeling tight at the moment after bowling 28 overs.

That's 7 T20 matches worth of bowling.

Hopefully better for Amir in this game - bowling at the moment after Hampshire won the toss and decided to bat

:)) good one

Wonder who is Amir gonna bash after he fails in the county first class scenes

WICKET! Amir gets Gubbins LBW!

Standard of batting is pretty average in England County, just as in eng national team

Amir looked very decent in that spell to be honest.

It’s also a sad state of affairs in England because a bum like Vince could make a comeback into the Test side, in fact this has been talked about

Thankfully it wasn't. Amir was absolutely pathetic in the little Test cricket he played in his last few years.

Actually, no.

In Amir’s final 12 Tests he took 38 wickets at an average of 25.73.

Amir never gets the cricketing respect that he deserves (from Pakistanis).

He was superb in the last two years of his Test career.

And at the 2019 World Cup he took 17 wickets in 8 matches at 21.06, with an economy rate 0.6 better than Mitchell Starc.

The Chemistry is totally different when a desi interacts with another desi, especially when both have some sorta of achievement under their belts which results in the need of having a donkey to carry their egos.

And the same chemistry is totally changed when a desi interacts with a Caucasian. The ego and they donkey, both disappear.

Then why were people crying so hard when he retired?

His pace is likely too diminished to play on flat tracks but could still prove to be useful in SEN conditions.

Amir is a great SENA bowler, just unsuited to Asian conditions.

Amir in England/NZ/SA/WI conditions: 25.77 average 2.75 economy 56.0 SR in 23 matches.

His numbers in UAE/Australia/SL are horrible as they're poor conditions for a swing bowler.

Its hard work in use and in asia but frankly he refused to be put the work n effort required

His pace was down n he seemed to be going through the motions He wanted an easy life and easy money His committment was questionable and it proved when he retired from tests

Now hes only back to fc cricket due to the lack of game time hes getting in the t20 gigs

Hes in for a quick pay day and doesnt give a damn about playing for national colours

UAE is a graveyard for fast bowlers and if Pakistan continue to make wickets like the ones for AUS series, you can kiss Shaheen’s career goodbye because he wont be around long. Amir wasn’t committed to playing Tests, period; the money wasn’t right. But Pakistani fast bowlers shouldn’t be sacrificed on dead pitches.

At the end of the day, most of an athlete's career is short and you need to make enough so you & your family is well off when you retire. Frankly speaking, it's Pakistan's own fault for not managing him properly even when he complained about workload issues. They would do absurd things like playing him in UAE Test matches when it doesn't make sense or playing him vs Zimbabwe when there's zero need for it. There's a reason why a Pakistani fast bowler hasn't hit 200 Test wickets in a very long time.

His pace declined and he saw his career quickly coming to a close so he decided to retire in Tests & maximize his earnings in T20 leagues. I understand why fans would be upset about it but the player also needs to look out for himself and maximize his earnings in the short career he has.

Pakistani cricketers are well paid for pakistans standards

If he continued putting the effort in post 2017 for the next 7 years amir wouldve finished as a semi great and earned a decent amount His family wouldnt have struggled

300 test wkts potentially wouldve earned his futire work too like shoaib wasim waqar n co have made through media and coaching work on the intnl stage

Look at what hes been reduced to Playing nondesript leagues in bangladesh west indies etc Hes a non entity now on the world stage

Hes been silly and couldve had a lot more glory accolades and hence money playing for pakistan but short term greed got to him

An athletes career is short but playing at the highest levels can set certain players with star quality up for life

He couldve had a lucrative career post retirement in the cricketing media coaching world like the likes of wasim if only he knuckled down for pakistan

Amir had the star quality not afforded to many which couldve worked well for him post retirement but hes wasting it

No ones gonna touch him or respect him in cricketing circles when hes barely got 100 odi wkts and 100 test wkts

If babar retires tmrw for t20 leagues what will be his legacy and future earning potential ?

Of course Amir is playing in County Cricket for money - are Shaheen, Azhar, Hasan, Rauf, Rizwan, Zafar and co. signing County contracts so they could take pictures of Buckingham Palace or tour the food places in Cheetam Hill ?

Amir spearheads Glos resistance on day two v Hampshire
6 May 2022

A ruthless spell in the evening session from Mohammad Amir resulted in Hampshire being pegged back to 28-4 after the hosts initially bowling Gloucestershire out for 179 on day two in Division One of the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Hampshire looked set for a first-innings lead in excess of 200 after Muhammad Abbas ripped through the visitors with a textbook showcase of line and length bowling with six for 45. But Ajeet Singh Dale and Jared Warner added 55 for the last wicket to reduce the deficit to 163.

And then Mohammad Amir continued the Pakistani bowling dominance with three for 11, with Ryan Higgins also pilfering a scalp, to leave Hampshire 28 for four, with their lead 191.

To start the day, Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott had failed to reach the bonus point for 350 runs despite a spirited morning effort, with Graeme van Buuren pinning Abbott lbw and Dawson flailing to deep extra cover – Hampshire all out for 342.

Abbas came into his own with an incredible seven-over spell of four for 16. Abbas’ second over was an Ageas Bowl classic. Marcus Harris left the first ball and pumped the second for three before the overseas found George Scott’s tentative outside edge behind. James Bracey was shelled at third slip first ball, played and missed the second before he finally tickled behind – Abbas coming over, around and then over the wicket again. A plan hatched by Keith Barker during their meeting last year.

Hampshire were now in the box seat and relentlessly hunted down further wickets. Miles Hammond was the next to feather Abbas to keeper Ben Brown before van Buuren was leg before on the cusp of lunch.

Abbas’ spell initiated murmurs in the Hampshire dressing room that it had produced more heat than other efforts in recent weeks due to compatriots Amir and Naseem Shah watching on.

Marcus Harris ended the procession to Abbas by loosely driving Abbott to second slip and Tom Lace had his off stump left lopsided by James Fuller.

Ryan Higgins countered with an entertaining 46 in conjunction with Dom Goodman before taking on Felix Organ one too many times to top edge to deep midwicket. Abbas then completed his five-wicket haul with a short ball into Goodman’s ribs, which was gloved through to Brown. Amir followed two balls later with a sharp edge to second slip – Abbas celebrating by running down to his friend and laying his hands on his shoulder in a consolidatory manner.

The hosts debated whether to enforce the follow-on or not at the fall of that ninth wicket, only for Dale and Warner to put on 55 – the highest partnership of the innings. Dale, against his former county, laughed at his No.11 billing with a brisk 36. Organ eventually got Warner to push to short leg to bowl Gloucestershire out for 179.

Gloucestershire’s glee was increased as, in 11 evening overs, Amir had Organ jabbing to the cordon second ball, before Ian Holland fell in the following over – caught behind attempting to leave Higgins.

Abbott and Abbas were lbw in successive balls to Amir coming around the wicket, as Hampshire saw their openers and tail disappear in a little over 45 minutes of havoc.

Don’t lump the others with Amir who is widely regarded as a sell out. Apart from Mickey fans, do you expect the rest to do a bhangra over a guy who retired prematurely because he expected more from the PCB allegedly when really he just wanted to make a few extra quid with the least effort rather then bend his back for the national team, that too when the board supported him after spot fixing.

Sure he’s going to get paid, who asked him to do it for free? easy paisa Amir always gets paid :)

Well either he makes his money now or goes back to his village milking cows at 5am. What would you prefer Shazzy :afridi

Mohammad Amir will also sit out of the match v Somerset due to a tight hamstring. He requires a period of rest after being away from red ball cricket for a number of years and bowling a large amount of overs in a short space of time since joining Gloucestershire. The Club is exploring the potential to play Amir in the two County Championship matches in June v Kent and Lancashire.
