Starts the video by claiming that he does not want to show-off. Proceeds to do exactly that.

He is running a foundation. The whole world is aware of his philanthropy. However, did he have to "film" himself bringing two children into his house for a couple of hours, feeding and clothing them? I don't think so.

Time to jump into politics?

It is inevitable; only a matter of time.

He is going to the Imran Khan route. From cricket stardom to philanthropy, and then cashing on his popular to enter the world of politics. Pretty soon he will establish a hospital as well, probably named after both or either parents.

Initially he will join either of the existing parties, most probably PTI to ride on their popularity, before breaking away to form his own party eventually.

It is good for him to share and encourage others due to his celebrity status. Stop being negative for the sake of it.

Well done Afridi and we all can do this.

Reminds me of an instance when I was once stopped at a traffic light and young boy barefooted on hot summer day asked me for morey for shoes, I checked my pockets and only had notes in thousands, I said I don't have change as at that time I didn't feel generous enough to give him a thousand rupee note, the kid quickly reached his pocket and said he has change for thousand.

Point being, a lot of kids on the streets are put out there to beg barefooted. There's a lot more needed to change than to just give them food and footwear, it doesn't solve the problem. They'll take those shoes off, sell them or whatever and be back on the streets begging again.

That is what everyone who advertises his/her good deeds says. Afridi is a practicing Muslim which is why he should be aware of the Islamic teaching that if you do good with your right hand, your left hand should not find out. No exception has been made for people with celebrity status.

The fact that he has established a foundation and collects donations from people all over and outside Pakistan is more than enough encouragement that the public needs. However, recording himself bringing two children in his home for a few hours and feeding them was unnecessary.

That is true. Unfortunately, they are a lot of "professional" beggars these days as well, but we can never know. All we can do is do our part and help them in any way we can. They might sell the shoes that you give them, but the satisfaction that you get from helping someone is immense.

It’s very sad that people are criticising Shahid Afridi for self-projection. The bottom line is that poor people are being loved and supported.

Yes of course, we cannot deter from helping someone just because we think that they're professional beggers but in this case I just didn't feel he was worthy and tbh I would have given him the thousand if I didn't find any means of getting change.

Around the same time I was Pakistan. I exchanged some money and walked out and there was an old lady, very nicely dressed, I was surprised when she asked me for money, so whatever loose noted I had from the exchange, something like 500+ rupee, I gave them to her. She was like beta I'm not a beggar, my daughter is unwell and I need a lot more money for her treatment. I said ok aunty get in the car with me we'll go to the hospital and I've exchanged this money to give for a wedding to someone but we can use it towards your daughter's treatment. She refused to come with me I thought she was scared to come in the car with a stranger so I said ok let's just walk to the hospital. She refused. I kept insisting and she kept refusing, and just wanted the money, about 20k. I was like wth? I later regretted giving her those 500 as they should have gone to someone more deserving.

Beggars come in all shapes and forms in Pakistan. There are so many different tricks they play and you can never know who's genuine. It's very tricky when you genuinely want to help someone and all they're doing is tricking you and the money that should go to deserving people ends up going to these scammers.

Afridi has not exactly been secretive about his desire to enter politics.

But I'd rather take this gesture at face value, i.e. encouraging others to be generous.

You make it seem like as if he is committing a crime.

Ordinary people will get a hospital out of it.

what was the message he was trying to give? It was in Urdu, i am sure you know how to comprehend URDU.

Get off of your pedestal

I am not on any pedestal; I just don't believe that you need to showcase your good deeds to the public.

First the Lion episode and now this - he really needs a good PR Guy.

No such thing as bad publicity when it comes to Lala.

If he can get away with holding a beheaded goat's head next to his crying daughter while he is laughing, the guy is a demigod.

Millions of people post selfies of themselves or their food or their shoes or whatever on snapchat, twitter and instagram, at least he's setting the right example here and posting himself doing things beneficial to society.... even though he follows his own very strict version of Islam apparently where women shouldn't play cricket, yet omits the idea from the Hadith which says that when you help someone your right hand shouldn't know what the left is doing... :shhh

Can you explain the last part in more detail?

I guess there is nothing wrong in educating the masses through a 45sec video of love care and generosity . After all he has many followers all over the world and even if 1% take the message in a positive light it will be better for all humanity.

Sometime we forget about the needy and those who really are struggling to make ends meet . I too am guilty of it and its very humbling to see someone who has everything one could wish for, still has time to be able to send the right message of humanity. Never mind if he has other intentions the main thing to consider is the message. I respect and thank him for that.

There's a well known Hadith that when you give charity/donation/Zakah or even help the needy that you don't brandish it and wave it as an accomplishment to other people like "Look I just helped someone!!", you be discreet about it and keep it to yourself, that's what that phrase means.

Thanks.

Can you explain how he was brandishing and waving it as an accomplishment if that is what you are trying to imply.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Seven are (the persons) whom Allah will give protection with His Shade* on the Day when there will be no shade except His Shade (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection), and they are: .......... and a person who gives a charity and conceals it (to such an extent) that the left hand might not know what the right has given......."

There are also stories of the sahabah being very generous and freeing slaves, donating to the poor, etc...

These stories or hadith are meant to inspire people to also do good deeds.

Afridi is popular on social media. If this can inspire even 100 more people to help out those less fortunate, how can that be a bad thing?

How many of those stories are the sahabah saying "Hey so today I helped so and so.." more often than not it's a recount from someone else. If you are a decent human being than it doesn't take much to look into the world and see who needs a helping hand.

This is the same as Kohli posting the video on twitter of his wife calling out a guy to not litter. Yeah you should be proactive when you see someone is littering, but do you have to post it on twitter to show how good of a human being you are?

This type of behavior seems pretty common in South Asia, don't see it as much by US celebrities who do just as much for the less fortunate. Angelina Jolie has adapted an orphaned kid from every continent, yet to see her post "Today I saw this kid and adopted him" on social media.

Either way i did write in my initial post that people post so much useless crap on social media, that at least this one raises awareness for something good.

What is the point of posting it on twitter? If he was promoting it for others to contribute to his foundation to raise awareness, I would understand that.

After writing all that then you contradict yourself in last paragraph.

Question: how do you know about his intention. He didn’t say I’m doing this because I’m Afridi rather he said I want you to do the same within your capacity.

Every charity organization should stop posting videos to create awareness?

Banda thora tu dimagh lagai

How wrong you are my friend.

US celebrities dont do this?

Ever heard of the ALS challenge?

Ever seen celebrities publicly respond to terminally ill kids, visit them in hospitals, and have it in the public eye when it could have easily been in private?

Go and google most charitable celebrities. You can find lists with how much each celebrity donated to charity. How would this be public knowledge if these celebrities donated anonymously?

How many celebrities name their charity foundations after themselves?

I am not criticizing them.On the contrary, what they are doing is very good. They are role models for millions of people. Spreading awareness on issues and inspiring people to help other people is a noble thing.

One thing I do agree with, is that Afridi did it in a slightly cringey way. Could have done it with a bit more class. But I dont doubt his intentions, its just that he likely doesnt have a social media team like Western celebrities do guiding them.
