Doubt Afridi had anything to be jealous off vis a vis Kaneria.

I think the issue isn’t jealousy but alleged racism/religious bigotry.

While I agree that Afridi has no class, I dont think he would have discriminated against Kaneria for religious reasons. He could have tried to get him out of the team if he thought it would effect his own spot.

That’s for his image and public consumption only. It is obvious that a narrow-minded and uneducated person like Afridi is not going to be tolerant towards non-Muslims, especially Hindus.

Kaneria is a liar himself but I don’t doubt that he must have faced some bigotry from the fellow Pakistani players especially when the team underwent rapid Islamization under Inzamam’s captaincy.

Stories of them not wanting to eat food with him etc. are surely true - even today, I bet not even 0.1% of the population, that too the educated Pakistanis, would be comfortably eating food with a Hindu.

It is funny how the alleged discrimination happened during Inzi’s regime when Kaneria was the blue eyed boy of skipper Inzi at the time and he and Sami benefitted the most from being captain’s favorites during those years.

You can look up the record books and see how often those two played and how average or below average they were and kept out a lot of deserving players because Inzi was guilty of favoritism.

Kaneria probably played most of his tests under Inzi. Obviously Inzi didn’t find him ODI material so he was not played in ODIs despite being his favorite spinner.

You make some fair points that I agree with. One shouldn't forget, Afridi was once asked about his view on Womens cricket and his response was something like "they belong in the kitchen" so I wouldn't be surprised if what you're saying is true.

But I do think your estimate of 0.1% is a bit too overboard. I'd say more like 10 to 30%. would have no issues eating with Hindus.

I mean Afridi starts a league for ancient players to make more money, there is a likelihood than Kaneria asked to take part ( he actually probably does need the money) and was rebuffed.

The sequence of events is plausible no?

He got so much preferential treatment under Inzi, it used to infuriate me. Watching his arms flailing away non stop with his bandar-like action was nauseating.

No other spinner got a look in! Not Ajmal, not Tahir, no-one! Especially with Kaneria getting walloped and at the end of the innings when the opposition have made 500-600 he gets some soft wickets to finish with 4-200 or something pathetic like that.

And he has the cheek to complain about being treated poorly? Disgraceful

Well we don't know that. I do know for a fact that Afridi has some rather primitive views on women and their place in society and the household. So its not a stretch to think he is a closet bigot too.

Kaneria is probably right about some of the stuff he said. I can definitely see certain players not wanting to eat food with him. In Pakistan even educated people have issues sharing their dishes with non-Muslim maids and sweepers. But at the same time I think, Kaneria is trying to milk the situation to his benefit by exaggerating certain things.

He is clearly still bitter to have his career cut short. But he shouldn't be because nobody put a gun on his head to do match-fixing.
