Sadly despite people being blinded by his 'hard work', he is what he is, a flash in the pan.
 
Well he had scored 3 hundreds in a row bound to get out cheaply eventually. Good ball pitched on middle and off and seamed back in.

No need to hate, he has one more innings in this test.

So far he needed dropped dollies to get a century in the first innings and since then he's back to his usual self against a solid team in the next two innings.
 
It was a good ball but he had a similar bowl b4..needs to be consistent

the ATG knock was built on multiple chances. So I don't think its a fair reflection of Shan's quality

He's an average player - we've seen that over 40+ innings now. He'll play good innings once in a while, and probably still the best opener in Pakistan. But by no means a world beater - average batsmen at best
 
He will always have faults. But he will also keep on overcoming them, and in the process keep oroving his detractors wrong. He did that once to me, and he will do that to many others throughout his career.

Some seriously amateurish posts in this thread.
As an opener in England if you play 6 innings you are going to get 2 to 3 low scores, it's about cashing in on the other innings where you get through 20 30 balls.

Nothing to see here

Now this thread more about personal milestones so Shan might as well leave with some good runs under his belt.
 
Please don't put unnecessary pressure on young Masood. He might against get out on a duck (or might hit a double century).

Fact is that , Pakistan must give him a complete season to showcase his talent before a call is.made.on his future.
 
Pakistan are about to bat. Apart from his brilliant century, he has not really contributed in his other two innings. He needs another score and this is a good pitch, so he has to take this opportunity.

This is heart breaking.

The guy played an ATG knock at the start of the tour and them 3 cheap dismissals..So frustrating

When you have been in the field for so long your footwork can suffer. People need to chill a bit, it's not as if Anderson is some Bum, the guy has 600 wickets for a reason
 
Shan is Anderson's bunny so this was happening anyway.

Unfair to judge Shan on the basis of Anderson's overs. He has been doing well since 2019.

The flaws are basics of batting and have nothing to do with how long he has been in the field.
 
Poor batting from Shan - clearly has not found an answer to Anderson.

One thing I don’t understand, yes he’s been in the field for a long time and yes he’ll be very tired but the manner he gets out to Anderson is to a basic incoming delivery? He’s a educated man with a good brain but how can you not grasp what Anderson is trying to do and has done over and over again is baffling.

For a educated man, how can you not understand the basics like footwork and angled bat etc?
 
People want this failure to be captain. He might be good at hardwork but is a completely average cricketer. Even his one success in this series came from howlers by England.

He's a mediocre batsmen who has a Test average of 32, can't expect too much from his technique

Crawley's double is a ATG knock. I am not sure how you can call Shan's inning an ATG knock. He had a SR under 50, had a number of edges and near misses, and was given at least 2 opportunities. It was good innings given the circumstances, calling it a ATG knock is a major stretch
 
The knock at the beginning of the series should have led to a win but bowling was to weak.

That knock did have Buttler drops.

Simply not good enough in moving conditions.
Shouldnt have been bought to UK for Tour. Walking wicket, but not his own all top 3 same.

Its good to have education but cricket has much more to it then just education.

Shan was really good in the first innings of first test but, after that they way he has been getting out has been a disappointment.

Showed a lot of character, guts and intelligence.

Make him captain.
 
Relax guys. Opening in English conditions is not easy. Look at the English openers. Burns has struggled all series too.

But nonetheless it's sad to see Shan get out the same way by the same bowler. It makes me wonder what Younas Khan is doing. Shan is a smart individual & should try to rectify his mistakes against Anderson.

What he needs to do is change his guard & open up his stance a little against Anderson & I'm sure it will help him. It certainly is worth a shot...he can't do any worse against Anderson as it is.

Can you mention one single pakistani batsman who is good against the moving ball? ( apart from Babar to some extent)

They are all mostly FTBs.

Exactly. It's not like we have a future Saeed Anwar waiting in the wings.

English openers have struggled in whole series too. Burns has done nothing. Abid Ali scored one 50 in the series & that too he was extremely lucky the whole innings.

Even Babar is not that good when it swings a bit...like we just saw him get out to a normal inswinger from Anderson bowled from wide of the crease...which a world class batsman like Babar should have been able to negotiate but he missed it completely & got out LBW

He overcompensated for his shortcomings outside the off-stump, and as a result he’s now vulnerable to LBW. With the 150, England’s bowlers kept testing him outside off and he was (usually) good enough to handle it. They have switched tactics since that innings successfully. Homework done.

He will figure out a balance, probably, but he ideally needed to do all this much earlier in his career.
 
At the top level in any sport, hard work complements talent. It can never be a substitute.

If you do not have the talent, working with the greatest coach in the world and batting for thousands of hours in the nets will not be enough.

Masood will never be good enough to score consistently against the top sides. He simply does not have the ability.

However, if he was not so hard working and determined, he would have been far worse.

Surely our standards haven't dropped this low, that we are happy with openers who average 30.

They adjusted the line, tightened up his scoring areas and gave him nothing to leave easily.

Analysis, homework, planning and execution.

Hmm, and who will be held accountable for the lack of planning and homework in our team?

Do you expect planning from the coaches in the dressing room who themselves admitted that during their playing days, they used to mostly pray and turn up on the field mercularly

He's averaged 40+ since 2019 including 38-40 in Australia and South Africa. Even if he fails in his next innings, he'll be guaranteed a 50+ average and I'm pretty sure he'll still end the series still as Pakistan's leading run scorer.

The problem in this batting line-up isn't Shan Masood, it's Misbah for prolonging the careers of Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq. Not to forget he was also the one to reward the mediocrity of the former by handing him over the captaincy.

Easy to blame the coaches.

Players have to take some responsibility too.

Weak players blame coaches, good players improve and work on their weaknesses.
 
Shan Masood in this series has not done anything different to what Younis Khan did in his entire career, one big daddy knock with multiple failures. Let's acknowledge that he is an improved cricketer and a lot of players will punch above their weight if they take a leaf out of his book.

Coaches have to be held accountable too as they are doing a job and being paid handsomely. Weak coaches throw the players under the bus whereas good coaches put their hand up, take the blame, protect the players and work over drive behind the scenes to lift them up.

Exactly! Very well said. Sad to see some of the usually sane posters don't see it that way. Oh well. I guess they can be happy with Hafeez in the playing 11 in T20's.

Very good post. Shan was given a lifeline in 1st test and took advantage of it. Scored a big 100. If Babar or Asad or captain useless himself would have shown up even once in any innings from there on for the next 2 tests we would have been in an entirely different position right now.

You keep going back to your Misbah hatred but are failing to suggest any blame on the players themselves, which is flawed thinking.

If we go back to the series in South Africa, Graeme Smith and Shaun Pollock mentioned that he was the best batsman during the series. He's about to outperfom a peak Babar once again in another tour outside Asia.

I don't think we can call him Asad Shafiq material.

He was poor prior to 2019 but that is history. Times have changed since then and he is one of Pakistan's two best batsmen in the side. I appreciate that epitomises Pakistan's frail batting line-up and that he's an average player but for a mediocre team like Pakistan, he is more than good enough.

There are no other openers in Pakistan who are capable of averaging 35+ in each of Australia, South Africa and England or being able to accumulate an overall 35+ average after playing these 3 sides at their home grounds. I can promise you that.

Other than Shan, nobody looks even remotely capable of scoring a big hundred. My definition of a big hundred is a 150+ score.

Shan has 1 score of 150+ in 42 innings, and he was given multiple opportunities to get there in that innings. Otherwise he doesn't have the quality to score big either, like the rest of this team
 
Shan Masood previously had problems outside the offstump and bouncers. He worked very hard to improve in those areas. Now bowlers have countered by targetting his stumps and he will now have to work equally hard to fix this. Given his work ethic, i back him to put in the hard yards to fix the problem as well.

Hopefully the selectors realize that, and send him to domestic to work on his game. International cricket isn't the place to work on your deficiencies, here you have to deliver better than an average of 32

10 years ago we made an opener averaging 30 our captain :butt
 
Tbh probably too much pressure on him because fans after the 150 want him to be captain, score centuries every innings, fix load shedding, etc.

Just give him some breathing room and see how far he goes. Sky is the limit.
 
This guy got out the same way so many times. Needs to be dropped. Can’t even play an inswinging bowl correctly. The fact that he ends up reviewing a plumb decision shows that he has no mental awareness whatsoever. Back to the drawing board for him

No can't name any but Shan Masood tried and tested failure, need to move on.
 
His saving grace is that he won't have to face James Anderson all the time and Anderson will retire in the not too distant future.

However, other bowlers will be onto his footwork.
 
Masood shaping up this morning vs Anderson once again. Big task on his hands to overcome his Anderson struggles and score substantially to help Pakistan save this game.
 
Don’t care if parchiis like Imam & Masood score 10k runs they were brought through the wrong channels got fast tracked, when more deservedly players were not given chance.

That’s why pak are borderline minnows IK keeps preaching merit he should start from home!!
 
Anderson will always be his Kryptonite.

He’s done really well to score 170 runs in these 3 Tests.
