Honestly this is very humiliating and very disturbing to look at. Why have they surrounded him like this?

The way they're dragging and pushing him. Then grabbing his wrists and pulling him from one direction to another. You'd think he'd committed a murder....

Think it was more to do with shielding him away from the press photographers who were clambering to get at him.

Could be am overreaction, but after seeing this video, i am actually fearing for Smith’s mental health - look at how expressionless he is through all of this, any other guy would have lost his cool!

I know he brought shame to his nation but I feel really bad for Steve Smith watching this. He's expressionless and I wonder what effect this incident will happen on such a talented cricketer. He's being treated as if he's some type of drug lord caught in a trafficking incident

Just the whole world losing it. They finally caught someone doing something with the ball and its all hysteria now.

He did wrong and the ICC punished him according to the laws. But the rest of the world is taking this to an another level. Really sad for cricket this.

Unnecessary. I think the cops were there originally to keep press and other people away but there are far too many and the way they're pushing him around is quite rude.

SA fans calling someone a cheat whilst there own captain has been charged more than once for the same offence.

SA are hardly champions of mortality.

Hope Smith can make a come back. Ball tampering is a part of the game. 1 year ban is a harsh punishment.

They are protecting him

There was a wider shot of this played in Aus, he was surrounded by a media pack and there were bystanders in the airport having a go at him as well

Wow, this is crazy. Treated like a criminal who has commited the most heinous crime. Feel really bad for him. CA have gone overboard with the punishments in my opinion, thrown their own players under the bus.

That's what media + govt pressure does. They had to look good again.

Things are getting out of hand The hysteria, excessive punishments and now this

Looking at this id think theyve committed murder not tampered with the ball

From being called the best after bradman to this in a matter of days, it probably still hasn't sunk in for him with everything being so drastic and swift. Wouldn't be surprised if he's mentally unstable at this point

Aussie Standards are supreme. South Africans and the rest of the world must be laughing at what their pressure has made Cricket Australia do.

For those defending him, do you think this is the first time they've done it?

How many times do you think they've done this now and won matches because they were able to get the ball to reverse.

Still doesn't deserve this treatment. It's just a sport.

If I didn't know what happened, I would think they just caught Pablo Escobar or El Chapo. :))

This is too much.

Would be more understandable if they were ushering him through a crowded place, but there doesn't seem to be anyone around. I don't have much sympathy for Smith, but this was harsh.

Funny how two people can watch the same video and come to completely different conclusions.

My view: police did nothing wrong. They’re clearly protecting him from the journos and any idiot who may have tried something.

They're protecting him. Well, trying to anyway. Maybe they're not doing the best job, but they are doing it.

This is just a protective escort from the crazy press. Nothing to do with treating him like a criminal.

huh? they are helping him get through so reporters and or citizens dont rush him

They are trying to escort him and protect him from journalists or anyone who may do any harm to him since he has brought shame to his country but the number of police was excessive and the way they were physically grabbing him seemed like they were arresting a criminal rather than simply walkimg next to him.

Lol at the pansies on PP.... they are actually protecting him from the journalists who are pushing and shoving to try and get upto him.

Even Kevin Pietersen called them out on FaceBook for this.

Manhandling him for no reason.

OK why exactly is everyone blaming the police or whoever they are. They are not the most graceful but they are clearly just trying to help him get away from media and fans.

This is so disgusting. I feel for Smith. Atleast this guy admitted the truth.

lol where were these guys when Butt, Asif, Amir were being sent to jail for spot fixing? It's not like they killed anyone. Cheating is Cheating and Smith, Warner and co deserve all the mockery coming their way

Even though video on OP looks bad... Overall it has created sympathy for Smith :smith

Looks like redemption has bugun already, sympathetic tweets from vocal critics of SandpaperGate are the proof - KP, Steyn etc..:19:

Shameful from SA police and also CA for putting them through this.Faf must be laughing right now.He did the same and got what 1 match ban.
Salman butt shamed his country and is captaining local teams, coming on tv giving opinions on cricket.

The Pakistani trio committed CRIMINAL offences and as you said, were going to JAIL. Smith is just going on a flight back home after violating laws of the game, but no criminal offences

I am feeling really sad for Smith now. Horrible! You can see the pain in his eyes. What he must be going through internally, I hope he remains strong through all this.

Like every police force around the world, SA police have occasionally been linked with corrupt activities. Would not be surprised if they set this whole thing up to add on an extra layer of humiliation.

Am I missing something? All they are doing is escorting him safely while trying to avoid the media.

That’s what I was thinking :S

The police are there for Smiths protection and to make sure the media or anyone else can not get close to him. Meanwhile the fans heckling him - well you can expect that. The odd guy shouting “cheat” is really no big deal & honetly speaking it’s to be expected.

Pretty much. You see such aggressive 'behaviour' from bouncers and the like as well - it's their job description to protect one person or the other.

I really don’t get all the sympathy on this forum for Smith & Co.

CA decided to take a zero tolerance approach to call tamoering - and if we have so many posters being like “awww that’s so sad! A little bit cheating should be allowed - that’s so harsh!!”

A few SA fans shout “cheat” at Smith at the airport because Smith & his teams tried to cheat against SA - and we have posters on being like “awww that’s disgraceful to see - poor Smith!!”

Security are trying to protect Smith from the media and ensuring Smith gets out the country safely - and we have posters coming up with “awww Smith isn’t a criminal! Get the corrupt SA police away from Smith!!”

For gods sake - get a grip people!!

If CA want to make an example out of these players and show to their country as well as the rest of the world that they will not tolerate cheating - good on them!

If a few people shout “cheat” at smith because Smith and his team tried to cheat against them in a Test match - that is to be expected! Imagine the abuse Aussie fans would be giving a player who tried to come to Aus and cheat against them!

If the SA police is trying to do their job and safely escort Smith through the airport - fair play to them! Even with all the security their in the OP we can see the media trying to swarm smith and shove their cameras and mics in his face. Imagine how he would have got on if their was no security there to help him through!

Steve Smith cocked and up and - he’s hes not a criminal - but he’s not absolutely innocent and he is a cheat so now he will have to face a bit of backlash. Eventually this will pass and we will probably see him return to the Aus team sooner or later, but such a sympathetic attitude towards a guy who admitted cheating is ridiculous to see and is exactly what enables other players to go down the same route as Smith & co.

What will you say about the sympathy on this forum for Sharjeel,Asif,Amir etc.

Seemed like they were protecting him and wanted to rush him out of that «danger area» of journalists etc.

What he did in the field he got the punishment for that already but overemotional South African police is behaving like he has murdered their President. Smith should have asked them not to touch him like this. Disgusting stuff.

Watching Smiths live press conference.
Feeling very sorry for him

Agree, this was not the first time he cheated, smith is a serial cheater, deservers what he gets

May be payback time for AUS media pushing :faf at Ozzie Airports last time around !

Heck this is too harsh and very tough to watch

Feel really sorry to smith,he got more than enough from all he deserved for the act

The police are maybe going a bit over the top but they are protecting him from the bystanders and press pack.

I am surprised at how much publicity this story has got. Its made the headlines even in the mainstream, non-cricket media.

Pathetic by the media, Steven is actually a good kid. Everyone makes mistakes in life, I hope he will rise to be a better player on his comeback.. I hope he keeps his head up and comes back strong, I personally am eagerly awaiting this..... #FAITHINSTEVE#

This doesn't look they are trying to protect Steve from media persons. There are so many better ways to protect someone (use chain or something)

What is more interesting here is that Smith was NOT allowed to wear any attire with Cricket Australia Logos!

Hence plain White T-shirt and Cap.

The punishment dished out to the three turned has them into criminals. If CA had deferred to the ICC forpunishments and let things cool down, things would have played out very differently.

Because CA went OTT, this episode will remain etched in the minds of everyone forever.

Are you being sarcastic or do you genuinely believe that? Because if you genuinely believe that - please provide the evidence to back up your claims and if you’re being sarcastic, please feel free to point out where I have claimed Smith to be a serial cheater.

What will you say about the sympathy on this forum for Sharjeel,Asif,Amir etc.

The absolute same. Feel free to find any post from me where I say the likes of Sharjee, Asif or Amir do not deserve their punishments and we should sympathise with them.

Yes - what I do say is that the likes of Amir were give in a punishment, they completed that punishment, so now I’ve got no issue with them playing. I’ve said the same thing for Smith in my last post - eventually this phase of his career/punishment will pass at which point we may very well see him back in the Australian team and that is fair enough.

What makes it worse is bashing the police officers who are just trying to protect smith and get him through the airport safely without being swarmed by reporters!

Warne, Pietersen, and Steyn post on PP?

What’s that got to do with the price of potatoes?

Is your argument here that Warne, Pietersen & Steyn agree with some PPers, therefore the PPers are correct? Sorry - I didn’t realise those three got the final say on matters and we’re the moral compass we should all be following :|
