Interesting video on Kohli marketability and brand value.
This is what I keep on hearing from Shoaib Akthar whenever he talks.. this is what he envisions for Babar Azam.

Also, as some one has pointed aplty in the video comments
"Video is focusing only on the tip of the iceberg, when Kohli actually became a star. But he has been spending hours, everyday, on the cricket ground since he was a kid. This brand building and advertising does not require even 1% of skill and hard work compared to rising to rank 1 batsman in the world. Kohli becoming highest earning athlete in India is only a byproduct of Kohli at first place becoming most successful batsman in all three formats. So, neither rise of internet nor the marketing strategies but the sweat he shed on the field years after years makes him what he is today."

This. Haven’t opened the YouTube link but surprised YouTube has such a well thought out comment :))

Like Michael Jordan said, “let your game speak for you”.

If you perform, the financial opportunities will come to you.

but I think you should always have a trusted financial manager to handle the business side of things I think it helps in focusing on the game while a smarter guy(in finance) is taking care of your assets and businesses

I am sure Kohli has his manger or something taking care of the his finances

Which is why this video has also mentioned Sachin and Dhoni, and countless other cricketing legends.

Virat Kohli‘s brand is the most carefully crafted one out of all of these cricketers to have ever been famous, and it no doubt does wonders for his image and marketability. Pakistan needs a Kohli — our ads continue to be dominated by Wasim, Akhtar, and the likes of Shoaib Malik doing laundry detergent ads.

It generates money for the players, makes cricket more popular, and brings money into PSL and the PCB’s banks. None of our current players know how to do this.

And if you’re smart about financial opportunities, you create Air Jordans. This video is about being smart about financial opportunities and branding.

For all the hate Shoaib Akhtar gets, he (along with Wasim Akram) understand the value of a brand. Pakistan cricket needs an aggressive rebranding.

brand kohli took off big time in 2015-16. Until then it was MSD who was the king following the 2011 WC win. MSD at his peak was also featured in forbes richest athletes and was making around $25-20 Million dollars annually. But Kohli took it to a different level with his brand and will be difficult to emulate.

His brand is built upon his efficiency and professionalism. Credit to him. The way he started, many of us in India thought he would fall apart with this attitude problems but he turned it around, used his attitude for the good and displayed remarkable improvements.

He's playing in an era defined by trophies however and he's coming shirt at that. Needs to win a world cup for India and needs to win at least 1 IPL.

India is lucky to have continuity... Kapil and Gavaskar, then Sachin and Dhoni,
Now Kohli.
Pakistan had Imran and Miandad, Then Wasim Waqar and Shoaib.. and then the link was broken after that. then Lot of potentials like Amir, Shehzad,Akmal who self destructed. Now they have Babar.
Pakistan should be the second biggest market and much ahead of Australia and England. PCB still has lots of work to do in this regards.
Cricket coming back to Pakistan hopefully will re-invigorate this.

. then Lot of potentials like Amir, Shehzad,Akmal who self destructed.

I have often wondered how the above 2 names would have played under the influence of prescribed Modafinil under the supervision of a team psychiatrist. It would have made them focus on 1 task and possibly could have reached their star potential..

Interesting point about Jio being one of the catalysts behind Kohli's commercial success.

Gill is a threat to Kohli's market like Kohli was to Dhoni and Dhoni to Sachin.... Dhoni,Sachin wereok to let others shine, don't see Kohli doing the same.

Brand managing is everything in today's sport thanks to the GOAT Jordan.. no one can come near to what he did , not Lebron, not Tiger not even Beckham, Ronaldo.- the dude is still selling out old Jordans :))

There are very few people who have the combination of many invaluable traits to make a brand. Kohli is aggressive, emotional, speaks from the heart, his unbelievable consistency in performance, its no surprise he was successfully able to brand himself.

In contrast you see someone like Rohit Sharma, who perhaps is more talented and destructive with the bat than Kohli but lacks his charisma and hence has a non-existent brand

Not entirely true. Dravid and Kallis are examples.

Kallis suffered from coming from a poor cricket market where cricket was not the number 1 sport and the fact no one knows much about him outside his cricket.

Dravid was never an ODI and T-20 beast and was best in Test Cricket, a format which does not sell in the Sub Continent

Rohit is no where near Virat in run scoring. Kohli aced the chases in odis, was rank 1 batsman in odis t20 and test matches as well. Rohit started performing only after 2013 and by then Virat had already been vice captain to Dhoni.
To create a brand first you need to be really good and have a glut of centuries in Indian context. By the time Rohit started opening Kohli had 20 plus centuries already and almost 12 of them in winning causes.
Rohit is more talented which even Virat accepts and acknowledges, but Virat maximised his limited talent and worked really hard.
That’s the brand value to show that you may have limited talent but if you focus and work hard, Sky is the limit. That’s where urban youth of India looks upto him and connect with him.

Not entirely true. Dravid and Kallis are examples.

They only prove MJ’s point since they were considered great only in one format, Tests.

Meanwhile their contemporaries, Lara, Tendulkar, and Ponting, were great in ODI and Tests, and subsequently commercially very successful even though they had very little charisma to sell.

Good video though I'm not sure how free internet helped fuel his rise? His game did all the talking; he didn't need to spread the word of his talent, when billions watch India play.

I don't know if I would attribute Kohli's success as much to free internet as I would to Kohli himself whose ability combined with his determination to be the best is unmatched by any player in the world. And the fact that he is an Indian and hails from a country of 1.2 billion people who only watch one sport. Free internet may have made him richer but even without free internet he would have been the biggest sports personality in India.

Nice video. Kohli does have pretty much all the attributes of a megastar - his fitness standards being the most impressive.

Virat Kohli is often considered as the most prolific athlete of India. One of the greatest cricketers of all time, Kohli has won many laurels for the country through his contribution to Indian cricket. Before Virat, MS Dhoni also took Indian Cricket to stratospheric heights and had a glittering career. Because of their tireless efforts, the brand value of both these living legends has seen a phenomenal rise in the last decade.

There have been interesting fluctuations in the brand values of both these cricketers in recent times. Dhoni has witnessed an exponential increase in his brand valuation even though he only plays the IPL. Virat, on the other hand, has seen a decrease in his brand value despite being an active international cricketer.

Virat Kohli’s brand value has fallen from $238 million in 2020 to $186 million in 2021

Virat Kohli has cultivated a brand for himself through his batting exploits and never-say-die attitude on the field. But according to a report in the Times of India, Kohli’s brand valuation saw a massive fall from around $238 million in 2020 to $186 million in 2021.

Loss of captaincy of all three formats of the game can be one of the factors for the depletion of Kohli’s brand value. It is worth mentioning that despite a significant dip of $52 million in brand value, Kohli remains the top celebrity endorser of the country for the fifth year in a row.

MS Dhoni on the other hand saw his valuation rise to $61 million. The World Cup winning captain had a great IPL last year. Dhoni led the Chennai Super Kings to their fourth title in October 2021. Bollywood stars Ranveer Singh ($158 million) and Akshay Kumar ($140 million) occupy the third and fourth positions respectively on the list of top celebrity brand endorsers in India.

Once you become a brand you want to keep playing on and on to keep your brand value alive. Kohli ain't going anywhere for the next 3 years at least. :inti

If that happens, he'll lose whatever little legacy he is left with.
