What's new

[VIDEO] Where does Wasim Akram rank as a fast bowler?

And few others like Ambrose, Steyn, Imran are about equivalent but Wasim's WC exploit takes it over them.

What's with the recent comparison between Steyn and Akram?

Steyn got owned by Babar in SA even though he only just found his feet in Test cricket.

Even Steyn would be mad with some of you guys at this comparison.

that was a dilapidated washed up steyn vs a pre prime babar. Ofcourse babar would win there.

prime steyn from 2008-2012 was the best bowler on earth. Better than wasim at his peak. However I can understand AB fan's point of view regarding wasim being greater because he won a world cup and had similar figures in test cricket.

He had similar figures yes but in terms of impact steyn was more devastating.

steyn still> wasim. Only imran and maybe mcgrath are ahead.

Believe me if Wasim played in a much professional unit he would’ve had 550+ wickets.

Surely he is in the top 3 of fast-bowlers.

If Asian fast bowlers were more comfortable bowling at home conditions, then that does not make wasim the greatest

Maybe wasim would have struggled on modern flat pitches. But u can never know.

But wasim is said by every great cricketer to be the top 3 bowlers of all time. So u have to take their opinion

The greatest ever... people who doubt Akram to be the greatest have no clue about cricket.
Forget stats when step kn the field. No bowler was even close to him. Sadly there is nothing in this thread to argue.

This is possibly the greatest response in history. I mean just denied.

Don't worry about the bowling average 3 lower, or the better strike rate, or the more rounded record. Just nope

How is he better than Donald, McGrath, Marshall, Steyn, Curtly, Hadlee, Garner, Trueman, Imran

Replaying to the GOAT post of 'nope'

he isn't.

he is better than curtly, trueman though.
the thing is he was excellent in odi too. Do we disregard that?

in tests he is out of top5. just sneaks into top 10.
in odi he is top 3.

So how do we quantify his greatness? as an overall bowler he is probably top 5.

purely as a test bowler he is top 10.

But were judging it on test cricket

Hahaha...I am the OP of the thread, I decide what's the criteria, lol.

Anyways, only tests is not the criteria over here. Robert doesn't consider ODI games as international games. So, for him, he is judging on tests only.

I would say in ODIs, he is on par with McGrath as the greatest Odi fast bowler of all-time. In tests purely, the order will be Marshall, McGrath, Ambrose, Hadlee, Imran, Steyn, Wasim and Donald .

But overall as fast bowler, only Marshall and McGrath can be considered superior to him.

I concur with this. overall yes.

test cricket is real cricket though. so that should be a bigger factor when assessing quality.

However in wasim's case he was a great in tests too. So yes overall he would be top 3.

Agree with that, but my focus is on test cricket only though. Otherwise some other blokes like Pollock sneak in too

Def behind McGrath, Garner and likely behind Hadlee overall. Also can't be considered above Trueman, as he didn't play ODI cricket

Fair, if you consider ODIs as important as tests.

I never saw ODI aren’t international though - that is oxymoronic - I said tests are the gold standard. Wasim is arguably the best ODI fast bowler.

Garner has a better test average and strike rate than Wasim.

And if you go by ODIs he is rated the highest of all time by the ICC, averaging 18. I’ll see your Wasim 3fer in a WC final and raise with Garner’s 5fer.

I don't care if they have a problem with me - Wasim is overrated on this board. The arguments are based on something akin to mythology, or refer to something unquantifiable called "talent" which is why they are proof against reason. There are plenty of better bowlers - Imran, Marshall, Garner, Hadlee, Amrose, Steyn, McGrath. Just look at the numbers. Not much better. But better.

The only time I recall saying that Tendulkar was overrated was when someone said he was the best ever, which would mean he was better than Bradman. I don't think he was better than some contemporaries such as Miandad, Lara, Ponting and Kallis.

So how exactly did Wasim Akram end up in Wisden's All Time XI not Imran, Garner, Hadlee, Ambrose, Steyn, McGrath? Also, why exactly did Sachin Tendulkar end up in Wisden's All Time XI not Miandad, Lara, Ponting and Kallis?

Good point. But Garner comes behind Wasim in tests for me as he had 250 wickets compared to Wasim's 400 and among the Windies in tests, behind Marshall and Ambrose and roughly at same level to Holding and Roberts.

Garner was an ODI legend, but Wasim is greatest ever in ODI, McGrath 2nd. So, Garner is no.3 in ODI and ahead of the rest. Btw, with ODIs, it's not just about stats but the impact they leave behind. I don't consider both formats equal. Tests remain more preferred but equally does World Cup particularly when rating players of sub continent. Garner obviously right up there taking both formats.

I wonder if Wasim would have played as many tests as he did had he played for WI with a conveyor belt of world class bowlers coming up ahead and behind him. Yes he had Waqar and later Shoaib, but not three of both! Garner would have started earlier and gone on longer for any other side, possibly playing ninety tests instead of just fifty-eight.

Opinion. We all have one.

Ok, in what ways is akram better than Steyn in tests

Where should we start?

Quality of batsmen
Competition among peers
DRS/Neutral umpires
Frequency of test matches played annually

Not everything can be boiled down to numbers and stats.

De Villiers and Kohli are very similar stats-wise (not in T20Is) but we all know who is the better player and match-winner.

Lovely collection of Wasim's best deliveries in Australia

Off course numbers and stats matter, over a period of time it shows the consistentcy Of the performances, and according to the stats Steyn out guns akram in every way in tests.

Competition among peers is just a stupid argument. One of Steyn's biggest factors was how much he distanced himself from his peers. Historically only Trueman and McGrath did so to the degree he did.

Kohli is statistically ahead of ABdV, by a large margin

DRS/Neutral umpires works both ways

Steyn bowled to a no. of high quality batsmen. His peak (08-2014) was an incredibly high scoring period, significantly more so than during Akram's career. Bowled to Tendulkar, Sanga, peak Clarke, Ponting, Dravid etc. Only 3 ATG batsmen during 90's (Sachin, Lara, Waugh)

What is the relevance of frequency of test matches. Steyn had significantly higher frequency.

Bowling in the Bushfire Bash match.

I think Akram was the most visually pleasing fast bowler...

I have yet not met any cricket lover who disliked him....

Lmao he still is better than many medium-fast bowlers.

A legend and a once in a generation bowler.

what about the batter friendly vs bowler friendly pitches?

Don't even get me started on that.

Steyn played on some absolute mambas in SA while Wasim had to deal with barely shin-high bounce on dead pitches that'd only aid reverse swing.

Everyone knows SA is one of the toughest places to bat in Test cricket.

You calling it stupid without providing anything to back yourself shows your maturity.

How the hell does DRS/Neutral umpires work both ways?

And Wasim didn't bowl to great batsmen, wow.
Do you even watch cricket lol.

Viv. Tendulkar. Lara. Martin Crowe. Gooch. Waugh brothers. To name a few

Best left arm fast bowler of all time. Beautiful bowling action and a great speaker with a lovely smile. Recent Pakistani cricketers look like Banadeshi cricketers compared to Legend Wasim

greatest odi bowler. Test bowler top 7? maybe? I would like to think higher but he got too many wickets off the tail.

You saying that Akram had greater competition among peers is the poor argument. Surely less compeition (standing out further) is a positive. Even in Akram's prime he did not stand above a Donald, Pollock, Waqar, Curtly and a green McGrath

Wasim bowled to less ATG batsmen. Only 3 middle order batsmen averaged 50 plus in the 90's: Waugh, Sachin and Lara. As such it was an easier era for bowling, so Steyn should be scaled up compared to Wasim. The fact that Yousuf averaged 50 shows how much easier batting was in Steyn's era, as Crowe > Yousuf. DRS works both ways in that some wickets Wasim would have got would not have actually been out. This would be roughly the same as the wickets that were not given out.

Funniest bit of this post was calling Mark Waugh great. By far worst Aus batsman to play 100 tests

Hes up there One of the 10 best ever

For me Marshall is the greatest, mcgrath and hadlee follow him

Put the rest in any order after them

The game becomes beautiful when a genius arrives. Wasim Akram was one such.

Amongst the best ever as an ODI bowler but not in tests but a very good test bowler who underachieved

I can guarantee that if he had a good fielding side at his disposal, his test average would be similar if not better than Mcgrath.

People forget how good a fielding side Australia was during the peak of Warne and Mcgrath while what utter garbage our fielding unit was. I am not even factoring in the leg before wicket appeals that were denied because the batsmen played on the front foot.

very true. this applies to india as well actually. :ua

australians ruled at the time due to superior fitness. other teams just never intended on training for elite fitness levels.

I actually rate Zaheer Khan and Srinath very highly as bowlers and believe they are extremely underrated.

The LBW rule change interpretation would have impacted all bowlers equally as more LBWs on offer would have meant bowlers attacking the stumps and the batsman would have adapted accordingly. He was a very good test bowler, but for me he didn't get enough top order batsmen and basically that's where tests are won and lost. No doubt our poor fielding was a factor but lots of time he bowled within himself at the start. Overall it was an amazing career but I just feel that he could achieved much more in tests.

First, I didn't count the leg before rule as a factor here, and secondly, unlike his counterparts who have a better average than him namely Ambrose and Mcgrath, were both bowlers who relied on line and length to get the batsmen to make errors instead of attacking the stumps like Wasim had to.

My point is, there's a role of our garbage fielding in Akram underachieving in terms of test statistics.

You are right that it was a factor but I watched most of the tests in the 90s, and WA was always consistently good but in my opinion he bowled within himself at the start where on flat wickets you had to bowl fast, which he could do when he wanted. When you saw the likes of Donald, Ambrose and Mcgraw bowl, you could see the terror in the batsman eyes when they had the new ball in their hands, I didn't see enough of that from him.

The problem wasim had that he was diagnosed with diabetes in his last few years of cricket

No wonder his stats dropped a bit post 1996 Can you imagine playing with an illness such as this

As well as this youve got the politics of playing for a board such as the pcb and all the headache that comes with it, the player revolts, changes in captaincy every yr, interference from outside, the threats etc etc

Wasnt his dad kidnapped at one point too in the late 90s? He did well inspite of all this going on

He was undoubtedly an ATG fast bowler and I'm not sure why he had to do the 90s fad thing of getting involved in unscrupulous off field activities.

He should thank his lucky stars that his long term reputation has largely remained untarnished unlike some other of his teammates and counterparts from the sub-continent.

Top 3 ATG bowler, probably in the top two.

Also Top 3 ATG dodgy character.

Very lucky the judge had a soft spot for him and people tried their best to protect his reputation.

Thats true. Fielding of Pakistan and India were awful in the 90s and even 2000 era.

Had Wasim played for Aussies, do we really think he wouldn't have been as effective as McGrath if not better?

This is something to think about. Team you play in matters as well. Your teammates can make you look better than you are.

I guarantee had Wasim played for South Africa or Australia in 90s era they would have won just as much trophies and accolades as they did with McGrath.

Sanjay Dutt on Wasim Akram:

“I am honored to be here with Wasim Bhai. He is a brother I have known for many years and one of the greatest cricketers I have seen in my entire life.”

“Wasim Bhai, God of cricket, thank you. And his reverse swing, my God. Everyone would be afraid of him”
