[VIDEOS] Afghanistan fans fight with Pakistan fans at World Cup 2019

Action will be taken to punish fans involved in "scuffles" at the World Cup match between Pakistan and Afghanistan at Headingley, says the International Cricket Council.

Videos on social media showed fans clashing outside the ground and a group trying to break through the gates between the main road and the ground in Leeds.

Fans were also seen jumping over the fence that surrounds the ground and gaining access to the concourse behind the Western Terrace.

An ICC spokesperson said they were aware of "some scuffles among a minority of fans".

It was also reported that there were "physical clashes" in the stands, which led to some being evicted from the stadium.

"We are currently working with the venue security team and local police force to ensure there are no further incidents," the spokesperson added.

"We do not condone this type of behaviour, and will take appropriate action against any anti-social behaviour that spoils the enjoyment for the majority of fans."

West Yorkshire Police police said they were called to "reports of some trouble outside the ground linked to people trying to get in".

"Officers attended to disperse the group without any issues and remained on patrol in the area," a statement added.

I've just walked around to the Western Terrace and on my way say around 50 fans stood outside the ground trying to get into the stadium. Security were there and the fans were still trying to push the barriers down and get into the ground.

It's been a strange day today, particularly off the field.

Surely, it’s time to call the authorities in. Especially with the games conclusion looming and families leaving.

Pathetic scenes. What an embarrassment.

akistan and Afghanistan cricket fans brawled outside Headingley today in shocking footage as their teams played each other in the Cricket World Cup.

Dozens of people were involved in the fighting, with fans throwing punches and attacking each other with a metal barrier.

It is believed the violence was triggered after a plane flying the slogan 'Justice for Balochistan' was flown over the cricket ground in Leeds.

Others claimed it was caused by fans being evicted for not having tickets.

Balochistan is a region of south-west Asia, that is split between Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan.

Baloch nationalists have long-battled with the Pakistan and Iran governments for independence.

The region is rich in natural resources but is one of the poorest in Pakistan and insurgents have previously been supported by Afghanistan.

In footage of the brawls, a man is surrounded by several people who throw punches, bottles and kick him repeatedly.

One even throws a metal railing at him.

Some of the attackers were dressed in Afghanistan cricket shirts and several people intervened and tried to break up the fight.

West Yorkshire Police are believed to have attended but no arrests or injuries were reported as the trouble was dispersed.

There were also separate claims that the violent scenes started soon after two Afghanistan supporters were evicted from the stadium by security personnel for not having tickets.

Fans were seen jumping the boundary wall of the stadium to try and gain access.

Another video showed security fighting against fans who were trying to force open a stadium gate.

A third video showed two fans fighting each other as security tried to subdue them.

The International Cricket Council said that action will be taken against fans involved in a 'scuffle'.

Normally it's drunk idiots that do this. Pathan's are our brothers, this is a game of cricket, and it should be enjoyed.

Terrible day overall regardless of the win. Our team played bad and the brawls are just plain ugly.

Rioting in the stands continues.

The emotions of this match have spilled over. Monga reports from the ground that there is rioting in the stands: "They are still rioting. Bottles are flying across. 650ml juice and soft drinks bottles. They are full, and they are being hurled at each other." Good god!

Been to Pakistan match in London where my fellow Pakistani brothers were drunk and that was 20 yrs ago. So trouble happens with and without alcohol

ugly scenes that have made headlines in non-cricketing media, full force of the law should be applied.

.

The perpetrators need to face force of law

Pakistan have played all over england in recent years and in leeds last month and never had any semblance of trouble

I dont know who the instigator was, and really ashamed of the Afghan fans.

But i understand, this is the first time these guys are watching games, especially a rivalry game

Does Afghanistan have any other sport where the excel at? Does Afghan have a rival? All there life they have played against Ireland, now for the first time, they were playing agianst Pakistan and that to with a rivalry tag due to the political comments that were made.

Afghani fans need to understand, thats how derby matches are played..

Statesments will be made, thing is you need to know how to handle it and wait for the result on pitch.

Anyways, this is good for the long run if Afghanistan becomes a good team. Pakistan will now have 2 rivals, and they could make good money if they use this right.

That is Afghanistan aka Jaahil nation for you. Not surprised and now we win, all the more reasons why they would continue to be agitated and backward.

Thank to ALLAH we won even though Afghanistan handed us win. Ma Sha ALLAH!!! :moyo2

bro, if we also didnt excelled in any sport and played a world cup and were facing our rivals for the first time in the world cup, we would had also acted as backward people or jahil as you say.

What they did was wrong, but they will surely have to learn.

I am not extra harsh on them as this rivalry thing is all new for them.

More fighting on the Western Terrace and more fans thrown out of the ground by security.

I've got friends sat there and they are saying Afghanistan fans didn't like the fact that Pakistani fans were abusing Afghanistan players and started fighting with them.

Nobody should be abusing players. Extremely poor behaviour.

Afghan fans have embarrassed themselves, their team and their country. I hope there are some serious repercussions following this.

It would be good if the ICC makes an example out of them and punishes not just the fans but also their board or cricket team. If they had any points on the board, ICC could've docked some points. But maybe suspending their test status or banning them from playing official internationals for 1 year would be fair.

So you would be ok with ICC docking Pakistan points for the pitch invasion and rioting in the stands after the match?

Violence is a tad bit worse than verbal abuse. That being said, I see no condemnation for abusive slogans towards Pakistan.

That's why the man got beaten up because he asked the Afghan fans to stop those.

True.
If we lost, that would be different scenarios as well our Awaam is no less ideal either in regards to handling the defeats. Not long ago Pakistan team was at the receiving ends which to the extent players’ family were targeted as well.

Since Afghanistan is new to rivalry, that is understandable but their hatred for Pakistan is centurions old and still linger among the young generations unfortunately.

Agree with you - shame to see sport marred with acts of violence.

Hopefully these fans are not going to get away with this behaviour and will be punished by the authorities.

last time i was at an event with a small contingent of an afghan crowd the same rubbish happened. not surprised at all, a lot of afghans hate pakistanis.

told my mates if u go dont go with family, this was hundred percent gonna happen. pakistanis like trolling and afghans are mad sensitive.

Thank you for the ethnocentric view on things, where giving stick to players is more worthy of admonishment over 1) 16 thugs jumping one guy 2) throwing bottles and other things at the crowd 3) beating up a journalist 4) (allegedly) illegally flying a plane near a busy international airport.

I like Nabi if anyone from their team. I wonder what he did.

He didn't do anything, the security guys were trying to catch the guys that rushed into the stadium just after the match finished and in an attempt to catch those guys, one security guy unfortunately tackled the wrong man(Nabi).

Wow I came here expecting there to be idiots from both sides but it's clearly the Afghans who are going crazy. Disgusting behavior.

I think the incidents were incited by the Afghanistan fans. All evidence shows as much. Attacking Pakistan fans, journalists, trying to forcefully enter without tickets. Anything done in response or self-defense is mitigated by the initial provocation. Not to mention, violence is far more serious than a pitch invasion.

That being said, in 2001 when Pakistan fans were known for pitch invasions I would've been more than happy for the ICC to punish Pakistan for it. I remember the fans invading a pitch when Pakistan had 2 runs left to win. The match was awarded to Pakistan but I think they should've awarded to England as a deterrent for the fans.

Why was all this happening.. crazy! Do Afghans seriously feel a strong sense of rivalry?

I don't know if the team should be punished for the actions of their fans. But I think this is the worst display of cricket fan behaviour I've seen (even worse than Inda 96) because there were multiple incidents. And for the captain to praise the crowd was unbelievable

In most cases I would say no except when there is this amount of violence involved. I think with violence, you need a strong deterrent early enough otherwise it can be a slippery slope.

Agreed on Naib praising the crowd being odd. Here's an opportunity to say something like, "thank you for the support. Please continue to do so in a respectful manner and refrain from violence or abuse."

Instead he praises the supporters and condones their behaviour.

Afghanis should understand that they are being brainwashed and manipulated by Indians on social media and otherwise. Their hatred is irrational and directed towards civilians who have nothing to do with politics.

What a shame that muslims are fighting each other over this.

Afghanis being thrown out of everywhere have been told to get out of Headingley as well. Desperate to be a Cricketing power now they can all home with a defeat in their pocket. Pak fans outnumbered them about 10 to 1 in the stadium.

Afganis first started the fight outside stadium when they were climbing the fences to get into grounds for free.
Than they started chanting Indians slogans and alao started swearing.

This hatred is only among the expats and the elite class sitting in Afghanistan benefiting from present non-Pashtun puppet government. A common Afghan tribesman is probably more anti-India than Pakistanis themselves. That is why Pakistanis should not look much into these antics from Afghan 'fans'.

The english guys who were supporting Afganis were also throwing bottles so its ot limited to Pak and afgan fans

This is only the beginning in Cricket of Afghanistan. We might see more in the future as well

Nothing to worry about. Jealous Afghan people who never have anything to shout about or be proud about just needed to express their frustration. They are always looking for freebies everywhere and most likely tried to skip the line or something like that. Now that they've had their big match they'll go back to playing associate sides like the UAE or Holland! No one else is interested in playing them:ma

Shows you that India-Pakistan have kept it dignified for years. Even in the tense 90s home games, the away teams weren't physically bullied.

That is centurions old of hatred speaking here. Nothing to do with rivalry unfortunately.

Weird.. most of my Afghani friends consider themselves part Pakistani as well as most of them have done some kind of business and have family in Pakistan.

What the heck, did they go for a cricket match or for a war? Absolutely disgusting stuffs!

Pakistan hosted more than 3 million Afghan refugees for more than 40 years.Almost 2 million Afghans are still living in working in Pakistan.I don't know any Pakistanis who have mistreated them.Pakistan taught them cricket as well yet these idiots are always acting against Pakistan.

Some Nations should be left alone. Its best to remain neutral towards them.

Was at the game
Me myself seen 3 fights today all started by Afghanis.

These Afghanistani fans are disgusting if they can't bare loss then their team should not take part

Try ignore these kind of posts. I know it's difficult at times.

Yes bro, I know you for long and always respected you for your calm and sane analysis and posts.
But, sometimes it becomes difficult to ignore stupidity of some PPers.

Anyhow, one should not paint whole Afghans as bad, I had some wonderful experience with some of them, stupid fans do exist everywhere, specially in SC ones. Whoever has done such pathetic acts should be barred for life in entering any cricket venues. Cricket matches are supposed to be enjoyed and not to be taken this seriously that it results in physical confrontation.

Afghan cricket fan ran on the pitch to attack Pakistani players Imad Wasim and Wahab.

In another unfortunate development, an Afghan cricket fan invaded thepitch to attack Pakistani players Imad Wasim and wAhab, after Imad hit the winning runs. Security personnel averted this huge incident as they restrained him near the pitch.

Think this is the straw that broke the camels back.

Don't think anyone in Pakistan would support them getting pak nationality as promised by IK before.

Totally agree with that 100%. It's a shame nationalism is always brought forward when such negatives occur.

Just pointing out I saw no issues with Afghanistan fans when it was a nail-biter against India, and less so against Bangladesh.

Still does not deserve an excuse for how they behaved. I am yet to see PAK/BD/IND fans react in such disgraceful way in this wc.

Currently at a minor injuries unit waiting for stitches after a can was thrown in my face. Thank god the boys pulled off the win. We have we will

No, you got this wrong. I'm saying Afghanistan fans did do wrong and they chose today's game to showcase that too.

My original reply there was towards this
It would turn ugly if afg win or lose this by narrow margin at the stadia.

Why should Pak fans or the board get punished for the savagery of Afghan fans?

Oh ok, my bad. Pethatic display from the fans. I totally agree with you

The problem is Yorkshire & Headingley. Never had this issue at other grounds.

Is this for real? What are these fans on? They should be deported for such behaviour.

whhy should they be deported if they are british national or resident?

Why not just fine or put them in lock up?

*** is the police doing about all of this ? Afghans are having a field-day today . Did anyone call the police and officially raise this ??? Maybe a petition ? This has been the most anti Pakistan WC I have ever seen. From attacks violent attacks from afghans to banners supporting extremism in broad daylight.

Afghans officially are the worst cricket fans. Zero sportsmanship. This is why I wanted this win badly.

Obviously i meant if they are not British nationals. Does every obvious thing need to be mentioned?

British citizens do not behave like such savages

They are definitely illegal immigrants and their real place is Guantanamo Bay

The Police were called at the first incident when the barriers outside were being swarmed by the fans and taken down.

The Police can only do so much so soon. It's just wait and see now.

Videos are available, people should be identified and those who took the law inbto their hands and tried to beat cricket fans, journalists and players of Paksitan nationality should be arrested.

ICC management is pathetic they are supremely responsible for the security of the attendees as well as players.

God forbid if this man had actually been successful in attacking wahab or Imad. I shudder to think what would have happened.

Dont understand the hate Afghans have for Pakistan, we housed them in our country since 1979 after the USSR invasion of Afghanistan and allowed them access to the entire country and trained, educated them and their future generations. Extremely Ehsan Faramosh people

This is bizarre, that guy should be charged with attempt assault. Idk why the Afghan fans are acting this way, this isn't some UFC fight.
