[VIDEOS] Azhar Ali's association with Worcestershire CCC comes to an end after 2 seasons

Last 2 scores - 92 and 88. Better signs after a very poor start to the season.

Two decent scores back to back.

It is Division 2 so he should be scoring hundreds for fun at this level in all honesty, but his record is at least returning to mild respectability now.

5* at the moment - chance to get another good score under his belt.

Last 2 scores - 92 and 88. Better signs after a very poor start to the season.

It is Division 2 so he should be scoring hundreds for fun at this level in all honesty, but his record is at least returning to mild respectability now.

I predicted this two weeks ago. Azhar Ali is bound to have a few big scores and get the final average in the 30s.

He is a 30s average player.

Azhar now 20* -could be a big innings today

42 not out so far today.

Finally finding a bit of form in the County Championship.

That's depressing, has been struggling but now scoring some runs , now we will stuck with him for another couple of years , thanks to spineless selector. Its time he should be replaced by a young player.

59* for Azhar - hope he gets a hundred today.

Jake Libby scored his first LV=Insurance County Championship century of the season as Worcestershire safely batted through the final day against Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground to secure a draw.

Libby has been the second-highest run-scorer in first-class cricket in the country for the past two seasons after showing prolific form since his move from Nottinghamshire.

He dug in to complete his sixth Championship century for Worcestershire, which was completed with a single off Wayne Madsen.

It was completed from 185 balls and contained 11 boundaries.
Worcestershire had lost only one wicket when batting through the final day against Durham at New Road, and it was a similarly solid performance today.

Once again, Azhar Ali played a significant role in making sure Derbyshire were given little encouragement in their bid to force victory.

The Pakistan batter struck his third successive half-century and featured in a partnership of 164 in 48 overs with Libby.

It was a flat and slow pitch, but the job still had to be completed, and Worcestershire accomplished it as they closed on 225-2.
Libby finished undefeated on 105 from 306 balls.

Worcestershire collected 14 points – eight for a draw, four for batting and two for bowling.

Libby and Azhar resumed on 59-1 and accomplished the first task of denying Derbyshire any encouragement through making an early breakthrough.

With the ball still relatively new, the second wicket pair were watchful but gradually blossomed.

Libby cover drove Luis Reece for four to reach his half-century, and Azhar went onto the back foot to Sam Conners to produce a similar stroke.
When Libby turned Anuj Dal off his legs for two, it completed the hundred partnership from 207 balls.

After lunch, Azhar brought up his fifty by cutting his 128th ball from Suranga Lakmal for his eighth boundary.

Libby ensured Derbyshire would have to bat again with a late cut for four at Alex Thomson’s expense before Azhar 60) was lbw to the same bowler working to leg.

After completing his century, Libby and the new batter, Jack Haynes, got their heads down before and after tea to ensure there was no opportunity for Derbyshire to force a late bid for victory.

The home side put the accent on spin in an effort to be able to turn to the second new ball as quickly as possible.

Wayne Madsen sent down 16 overs for eight runs at a rapid rate.

But the light deteriorated to prevent the new ball from being taken, and Libby and Haynes were presented with few problems before the two teams shook hands.

Azhar Ali has thanked Worcestershire’s players and coaches for their sterling support in helping him settle into the 2022 campaign at New Road.

The Pakistan star batter has responded in style to a challenging start to the summer when combating some seamer-friendly wickets and bitterly cold weather with a trio of quality innings.

He struck a fine 92 to help draw the home encounter with Durham and then followed that up with 88 and 60 in the drawn game with Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground.

Azhar was involved in two substantial partnerships with Jack Haynes – 195 versus Durham and 187 in the first innings against Derbyshire – before adding 164 with Jake Libby on the final day at Derby.

Now he will be hoping for more of the same heading into Thursday’s LV=Insurance County Championship match with Leicestershire at New Road.

He said: “I was quite disappointed the way I had started (the season), but the dressing room and the head coach, all the coaching staff, were really positive.

“They all said to me, ‘you are just one innings away,’ and I felt so as well.

“When you don’t score runs, you can start to doubt yourself, but I just had to stay positive and play as well as I could.

“I am really enjoying my cricket. I played for Somerset before, but Worcestershire is another really good club, and the boys are really nice, the club is nice.

“In April, it was really tough with the weather, especially with the wind being quite cold, and I was really feeling it.

“But the weather can change very quickly in England, it’s getting better now, a bit warmer.”

Azhar is keen to make his mark on his new teammates and pass on any information that may be of benefit from his decade long career at the top.

He said: “As a senior player, who has played a lot of cricket, I just want to make them feel good as well.

“They are very talented players, and on top of that, they are all very good guys.

“I’m sure they are going to be very good cricketers and also going to be very good human beings as well.”

Great - another 5 years of azhar scratching around, getting out like a schoolboy innings after innings and then scoring a pointless century

Along with AAs 100,was Jack Haynes 3rd 100 in a row. I have known Jack since he was 9yrs old. And even at that age he was touted to be a star. He is lovely lad and I for one is hoping that he goes all the way.

Tough last few day for Azhar haters.

It’s good to see him back in form with a slow start to his county stint. Hope he keeps this form for the rest of the season.

Double century-maker Azhar Ali is backing Worcestershire to press home their position of strength during the second half of the LV=Insurance County Championship encounter with Leicestershire at New Road.

Azhar will resume on a magnificent unbeaten 202 out of 456-3 – an overall lead of 348 heading into day three.

It continued his superb form for Worcestershire after scores of 92, 88 and 60 in his previous three innings.

Azhar put on a superb 281 for the third wicket with Jack Haynes – a record by Worcestershire for any wicket against the Running Foxes.

The Pakistan star said: “It was nice to make a big score, and I’m really pleased with the position we are in as a team. We obviously wanted to bowl first on this wicket.

“The toss didn’t go our way, but they batted first, and we made full use of the conditions, and we wanted to bat long and make sure that whoever gets in made a big score and played in partnerships.

“It was lovely to bat with Jack (Haynes). The way he batted was fantastic, three hundreds in a row, a great effort, and also the partnership was very good as well.

“I heard about the (partnership) record when it was announced, and very pleasing to achieve that.

“As a team, we are very happy, and hopefully, we can build on the situation tomorrow and get a win out of this.”

Azhar paced his innings perfectly and reached 200 in the final over of the day with a cover drive for four off Rehan Ahmed.

He said: “As a batter, you play different phases of the innings. There were times when we were a little bit more aggressive when the bowlers were a bit tired, and the wicket was not doing much.

“At other times, when they bowled well, we were patient and tried to make sure we didn’t lose wickets.”

Azhar also spotted some encouraging signs about the wicket for the Worcestershire bowlers.

He said: “There was a hint of turn in the last few overs from Callum Parkinson, not a huge amount but still encouraging for us.

“Hopefully, after a little while, it will start doing more for us.

“What is the plan? The team management will reassess in the morning, and hopefully, we can build up enough lead so we can just try and bowl Leicestershire out.

“It will be hard work, and we have we will have to bowl really well, but I’m sure if we bowl to our ability, we will be able to do that.”

Azhar has now been involved in five-century partnership in just over a week – three with Haynes, one with Jake Libby and the current one with Club Captain Brett D’Oliveira (52 not out) so far worth 122.

He said: “About a week ago, I couldn’t get a run, so really happy to be involved in all those partnerships.

“It is always exciting to be batting with Jack, the way he is batting right now, and Jake (Libby) made a terrific comeback at Derby.

“I’m really happy for those guys because they are very talented players and I’m sure they are going to go a long way.

“Hopefully I can help them out and we as a unit can help Worcestershire out to win more games.”

Azhar these days takes a while to get going most likely due to knee issues so it's imperative he keeps playing especially before a test series.

Azhar, who resumed on 202, set the aggressive tone with a succession of boundaries.

He eventually played on to Chris Wright to end his marathon nine and a quarter-hour knock on 225. He left the arena to a standing ovation and the congratulations of several Leicestershire players.

An innings full of class spanning three days and 350 balls included one six and 22 fours and was Worcestershire’s highest individual score since Moeen Ali’s 250 versus Glamorgan at New Road nine years ago.

I do hope that his experience in county cricket translates to success in international cricket and comes back to score mountains of runs at a better SR suitable in the longer format. He was always a dot ball machine who has amazing levels of concentration and grit with the ability to grind out bowling attacks. However his form has not been the best and his extremely low SR does not help, yes you should put a price on your wicket but you do need to at least push the ball in the right areas to score some singles and doubles if you're not able to hit the bowler for a boundary. He will be one of the more senior players in the squad (he technically is one) and I feel that he might have some life left in him before he retires so I don't have a problem with him if he can still contribute to the team somehow. Finally he should stay well clear of any captaincy roles or trying to offer some guidance to players within a Test match because he is not a leader, only a batsman. If his form is poor then he should consider hanging up his boots.

Worcestershire overseas batter, Azhar Ali, is to play for the Rapids in this summer's Royal London Cup competition.

The Pakistan star initially joined Worcestershire to play red-ball cricket in the 2022 LV=Insurance County Championship and has been a big success.

He has now agreed to also be part of their squad for the 50-over competition throughout August in a huge boost to the Rapids' hopes of glory.

Azhar's record in Test cricket is formidable, with more than 7000 runs at an average of 43, but he also has a superb record in List A cricket for his country and at domestic level.

He has scored 6278 runs at an average of 47.20 with 17 hundreds and 36 half-centuries.

His highest List A score came in January 2016 when he hit an unbeaten 132 for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd versus Lahore Blues in the National One Day Cup in Pakistan.

Azhar Ali said: "I've really enjoyed the first two and a half months with Worcestershire and been delighted to contribute to a good start in the Championship.

"We have fought hard, gained a couple of wins and showed great determination to earn draws which are also important, and are in contention for the second half of the season.

"But I also love List A cricket and am delighted to be able to play the entire Royal London Cup campaign.

"The Rapids had some good victories in last year's competition, including a magnificent performance to win at Essex.

"I hope I can play my part in helping them to do even better and qualify for the knockout stages, and then, who knows what can happen?

"There are some fine players in our squad, and we have the capabilities to do well."

Worcestershire Cricket Steering Group Chairman, Paul Pridgeon, said: "We are delighted Azhar has agreed to play in the Royal London Cup in addition to Championship cricket.

"His record in all forms of the game is outstanding, and having his skills and know-how to call upon in 50-over cricket can only be beneficial.

"Azhar has made a great impact on the field, helping with the development of people like Jack Haynes, but also in the dressing room. He has been everything you would want from an overseas player."

The Rapids launch their eight-match Royal London Cup group campaign on Tuesday, August 2, against Kent at New Road.

Instead of leeching national team he should concentrate playing in country and franchise leagues to make more money. He is blocking promising players due to his personal milestone.

I find this argument that players should hang up their boots voluntarily for someone else to take their place extremely problematic.

Azhar is in the team because he is getting selected on merit - by selection committee after selection committee, captain after captain.

Players who were not good enough have been axed from the team.

He is not in the team because there is any undue pressure on selection committee.

The selectors obviously think he adds value to the team more than any other player who could take his place. And he may be adding value in many ways - with batting, stability, leadership, experience, information about conditions etc.

It is unfair to put burden of retirement on a player who is making the team on merit.

Will we leave a job which brings all the joy in the world to us, provides security for our family and for which the organization is happy with us - because some outsiders think we are not to their liking?

Spineless selectors are equally to be blamed. This pathetic "legend" has given nothing ( baring couple of performances long time ago ) but depressing news and performances throughout his career.

Cricket community should celebrate the day he will be dropped from tests also for good. No cricketer in past has given so much pain to the cricketer followers for refusing to retire .

So many young cricketers waiting for their turn but this leach is not leaving the scene .

So Azhar Ali back for Worcs soon for the 50 over competition

As a top order batter his strike rate will be under scrutiny. SR will need to be minimum of 80-85 (and ideally more) in the 50 over cup.

So Azhar Ali back for Worcs soon for the 50 over competition

They couldn’t have made a worse signing he was playing like a tailender in Sri Lanka how is he going to play at a decent strike rate at his age in the 50 over competition.

Out for 8(20) Azhar in Royal OD Cup game vs Kent

County Cricket is not everything. Pujara had a solid season but failed once again for India

Point is that Azhar is in the wrong format for Worcs.

Agreed. The most suitable format for him is as a commentator in his armchair at home. He has no business on a cricket pitch.

QOTW nomination right here. spot on comments.

34 runs in 6 innings.

He has actually managed to reduce his average even further, to 5.67.

somehow manages to be in the team 11..

Pakistan think tank played and didnt give Shan Masood a chance who was the highest run getter in the same county championship..

The seniority cult in Pak dressing room is sickening to the core.

They have also saved his spot for the next series by dropping him for Fawad who also failed as expected..

Had Shan given a chance at 3 in this SRL series, he would have cashed in and made no.3 his spot and sent Azhar packing forever..

Improvement from the previous game - gone for 7(18) vs Yorks

Azhar Ali is caught behind for 11 off 22 vs Derbyshire

R08K2hA.png

This is getting ridiculously embarassing now.
His last 5 scores read 11, 29, 7, 0, 8.
We know, 50 Over cricket in England is flattest than every cricketing nation. Plus, majority of the quality English domestic players are playing the Hundred.
If he is not able to score here, then he should take retirement and gracefully accept that he is not good enough now.

He is really embarrassing himself now. The sad thing is that Babar will still continue to select him.

Very disappointing run of scores for Azhar.

Struggling is an understatement.

Stop the press!!

Azhar Ali is 26*(28) vs Northamptonshire in the RL OD Cup as Worcs chase 248/4
