Sarfaraz Ahmed has been dropped from the T20I & ODI squads against West Indies.
Is this end of the road for Sarfaraz Ahmed?

sarfraz should have had some sharam and retired a long time ago, he went from icc championship winning captain to drinks carrier real fast. About time the team invested in some young wk who we can develop for the future rather than carrying old sentimental baggage.

Sarfraz is a nice guy so nothing personal against him.I don’t know what happened to him.He was pretty good up till 2017.He went downhill from then on.I didn’t like his captaincy. He was too emotional and used to throw tantrums. His keeping was not great either. There are plenty of good keeper-batsmen available now so I doubt if he will play for Pakistan again.

So last T20 Bangladesh supposed to be a farewell match. Hopefully both Haffez and Malik will not play for Pakistan again.
Sarfraz and Azhar needs to go from Test team as well

Was he dropped or was he rested?

Not easy carrying drinks..

I reckon he will be back for overseas tours.

Does Pakistan have any new backup WK who can play in absence of Rizwan. If yes, then playing days might be over for Sarfaraz.
Else he can play like Saha who plays only when Pant is not available.

I think he should announce retirement.

He is a CT-winning captain. He should retire with dignity.

They say rested

Why would he need resting when he has hardly played any cricket recently.

There's a message in all of this, but he just doesn't seem to be getting it.

Its still surprising that Pakistan haven't named a back-up keeper. So either they still want Sarfi around the team or don't trust they need a back-up keeper.

Tbh Riz could do with a break as well. Maybe be resting him for the T20 series wouldn't have been a bad idea.

Sarfraj was a good cricketer . Found him to be modest. Not a right way to show door to such player.Everyone has Ups and down. Cricket Management should gracefully retire him.

Sharam is too expensive for Pakistan cricketers, if Misbah and Hafeez could not buy it how would Sarfraz buy it. No one retires in Pakistan cricket. Even a nice guy like Wahab also wants to play 2023 WC.

He has every right to want to play. If the selectors don’t deem him necessary they can ignore him as they have for this series. But Sarfraz is under no obligation to heed any “messages”.

He’s been a good cricketer and captain for Pakistan and it’s nice to see hes willing to carry drinks unlike some of the former captains who would have considered it beneath their level to do so

His time was over when he was out as captain and Rizwan took. He is only even around as a backup until the younger ones like Rohail & Huraira develop. Neither of those two are currently ready for International level.

Unfortunately, he is just too old and his batting skills have declined.

One can only hope.

As good a time as any to make Mohammad Haris, Rizwan's understudy.

Having a 34 year-old backup keeper, while the first-team keeper is one of our best players so the backup will barely play, seems like quite a pointless situation.

Not Sarfaraz's mistake that the selectors keep selecting him. It's selectors incompetency that they are not grooming some young player as a backup wk-bat instead of Safaraz. But the positive point in this is that the actual backup wk-bats are getting the game time by playing in QEA trophy and they are not just there with the team to carry the drinks.

He is 34 not 44. Nothing he can do if the selectors keep picking him based on a few good performances at the domestic level.

I hope it is. He & team management wasted at least 2 quality years of Rizwan where he should have been our 1st choice keeper. I'm glad he's not included in the squad but knowing Pakistan cricket he will be back as a backup wicketkeeper for our next overseas tour. :facepalm

Given that Mohammed Rizwan is now firmly entrenched as first-choice keeper and is so far gone in his commitment that he'll jump off a hospital bed to play for Pakistan, it's probably better to have a senior guy such as Sarfraz as reserve keeper.

There's no practical benefit in having the likes of Haris or Rohail Nazir on the bench when they could be playing first-class cricket instead. The best way to develop their skills and game intelligence is by allowing them to play as much cricket as possible at this stage of their careers.

I'd rather Sarfraz stays on as reserve keeper for another couple of years.

He became too complacent after he became the captain in all 3 formats. And probably after the CT17 win, he started thinking that he has achieved the status of someone like Imran Khan. This IMO is the only reason he lasted for 2 more years in the team despite his & Pakistan's medicore performances.

Not sure if this is real.

the caption “Sardraz Ahmad’s deleted tweet. — Twitter” seems so out of place

Mohammad Haris has been named as the understudy to Mohammad Rizwan for the white-ball series against Australia.

Fair to assume that's the end of the international road for Sarfaraz Ahmed?

About time pakistan looked forwards rather then backwards.

Thank god. Finally. This should have happened back in 2019 after Sarfaraz was ousted out of the leadership role. But nevertheless, I am happy we won't be carrying a passenger anymore.

Waiting for another controversial and cringe-worthy tweet for Sarfaraz.

With the rise of Mohammad Haris and his selection in the squad, it's almost certainly the end for Sarfaraz. Domestic until retirement for him, like Asad Shafiq.

when alls said and done will be consdiered an under achiever, his keeping and batting was fresh air after kamran, to think he averaged 50+ with a s/r of 75 for a bit at the start of his career. simply wasnt mentally prepared to be a captain. think he will still be the reserve test keeper for another year or two.

I had big hopes for Sarfaraz when he first started out. With the emergence of Rizwan and most likely others waiting for their turn I would be surprised to see Sarfaraz represent Pak again at international level.

Leading the team to the Champions Trophy win will be his career highlight.

But overall he flattered to deceive and largely underachieved.

I would also say that he hung around in international cricket much longer than he should have done.

I still don’t understand the hatred for Sarfraz here. There’s always an underhand comment. Sarfraz hasn’t been a regular for 3 years (justifiably so) but people are still talking about him with every excuse to have an underhand dig at him. He’s out of the team. Rizwan is undisputedly the no1 keeper. What’s the problem now?

I think he did as well as his skill set allowed Youd never call him the best keeper batter ever He was an honest performer, solid rather than spectacular and served his country well with the high of the champioms trophy being the highlight

He ll be the first to acknowledge tho that rizwan is a much better upgrade on him in all depts and that its the right decision to drop him as to continue as an understudy to him would not benefit him or the team in the long run

He was a great talent when we first emerged. He won the u19 WC in 2006 which showed that he had a great future ahead. The bad thing is that he was not given preference over Kamran Akmal due to the former being a better choice at the time. When Sarfraz did manage to get chances after the 2011 WC, his batting was quite ordinary and he had no originality when it comes to his playing style. His first purple patch came in 2014 during a Test series against SL when Adnan Akmal was injured and showed that he was a WK batsman who could play at a very good strike rate. This continued all the way to the 2015 WC when he replaced Umar Akmal as a wicketkeeper and became the main WK halfway through the WC and played very well as an opening batsman against South Africa and Ireland.

He then took over the T20 captaincy and became our greatest captain in the format by making Pakistan the number 1 T20 side for a long time. He then grabbed the ODI captaincy and went all the way to win the 2017 CT which was his biggest achievement; this shows us that he had all the tools since his u19 days to succeed in international cricket. Unfortunately the 2017 CT victory was the start of his downfall, he immediately got complacent with his batting and wicketkeeping and focused just on his captaincy by shouting at his players.
Pakistan ended up losing a lot of ODI games under him and our bowling was very one-dimensional and non-threatening at times. He didn't fare too badly in T20i's from what I remember but he was hiding down the batting order many times in both of the shorter formats. This is not what a captain is meant to do as he must set an example for his team and lead from the front. You don't have to be the best player in the team to be a captain but at least put in a good shift so you can motivate your players to get over the line and win games continuously.

What made him a successful captain before was his street-smart approach to the game and allowed his bowlers to outfox the opposition and then allow his batsmen to play their natural game. It's such a shame given he's 34 and could've still been a regular if he maintained good fitness and just focused on playing good cricket. I'm afraid he's thrown it all away.

Why not induct a youngster in the test side as back up keeper give him that confidence someone like Haseebullah/rohail.

rohail is over hyped imo, had a golden choice as northerns first choice keeper to play a full season and didnt do anything, continues to flop in pakistan cup, and the few times ive seen him keep he looks ok but nothing particularly special.

haseebullah needs one full first class season, altho hell have tough competition from bismillah khan who is a decent domestic keeper, especially given balochistan is not very talent heavy, might even see him palying as a specialist opener full time like he is on the list a. i dont think hes kept in a professional game.

the only one i think who has potential is mohamad haris, if he can adapt his game to long form cricket he would be coming of age at exactly the time rizwans reflexes, fitness, might be waning. however need him to play a full season of domestic.

until there is someone worth grooming it makes to sense to keep a player who can come in and u know exactly what youll get, someone who is decent behind the stumps, good against spin and can pbly average mid 20 away from home. given rizwans professionalism, injuries notwithstanding, i can see him playing another 6 or 7 years easily.

Not sold on Haseebullah's wicket-keeping ability. He seems like a batter who also happens to keep wickets. Haris I have seen behind the stumps and he seems better and more technically correct than all the other young keepers in Pakistan. Better to invest in him and just let him be Rizwan's understudy. I think he could learn alot and improve just by being a part of the squad.

Not the least bit impressed by Rohail.

no reason he cant be with teh squad, i just hope he doesnt go the abdullah shafique or haider ali route, where he is around the squad so much he misses the first class season.

Yeah that's actually more of a detriment to these guys than any kind of a favor. I'm glad Abdullah is doing well, and obviously he has solidified his position in the team. But I don't think any player should be playing test cricket or ODI cricket without sufficient FC or List-A experience.

My fear is that they will take the wrong lessons from his success and start fast-tracking more young guys to the national team based on their talent, rather than their actual, quantifiable performances.

yep, from what i hear abdullah has played a lot of club cricket at lower levels, and thats why he didnt come through via any of the national age ranks. he has cricket players in his family so maybe they guided his development, altho im purely guessing now.

as u say i fear that theyll try to do this with other guys, however guys like hurrera who are likely somewhere around international selectors radars have had a full season of first class, and he actually developed and improved through that visibly.

Yes his father was a first class cricketer. And he has played a significant amount of Second XI cricket too. But even if he turns out to be a prodigy there's nothing to suggest that the next 20 or 50 guys will be too. Which is why it is so important for these young guys to get the necessary reps in domestic.

Agreed. Huraira had a good season and Haider Ali has done well for Northern too. But again, I'd like to see these guys do well for a number of seasons and ideally play some A team cricket too before they play test cricket for Pakistan. Right now I feel the pitches in domestic are back to being really flat yet again. So I'd like to see how some of these guys do if they change in the next two seasons before I start thinking too highly of them.

Rohail has a 100 against New Zealand A to be honest I agree he has under performed he should be doing alot better espically in the longer format but I stil think he's good enough but needs work.

Haseebullah kept wickets in u19s World cup and he looked very good and looks like a proper test match batter obviously proberly will only get limited opportunity to keep whilst bismillah is thier.pluss I think rohail kept wickets in the u19s World cup couple season.

Haris I only see him as a t20/odi specialist.

to me rohails performances (hundred in u19, fc debut, against nz A) are more a sign of some obvious weakness that teams he plays against regularly have picked up on, and that those who have not seen him before are unaware of.

That's a fair point.

Happy Birthday to Sarfaraz Ahmed - 35 years old

Still in the reckoning, I reckon!

Sarfraz's selection based on region quota similar to S Africa. Rhis guy is finished2-3 years ago but still keep coming back same goes with Hasan Ali.

Tanvir Ahmed about treatment of Sarfaraz in terms of Central Contract in Category D

"I don't know why Sarfaraz is silent - A captain who has won Champions Trophy. A player who has several achievements, I don't why he is tolerating such an attitude from PCB"

"Had I won Champions Trophy and faced such an attitude, I would have told PCB what they actually deserve. But, I think some players somehow want to be in the team regardless of respect," he shared his two cents.

If only Tanvir used to bowl with such unbridled intensity as he vomits crass.

Well, Sarfaraz has earned a central contract once again.

Personally I think PCB should have some pay as you play contracts for those players who are on the fringes like Sarfaraz.

This could end up as a contract where he doesn't play for Pakistan all year.

Seems to be very much part of the Pakistan setup so seems will be there for a while

As per a media report:

Sarfaraz Ahmed has been given permission by the PCB to participate in Kashmir Premier League (KPL) season 2.

He has been picked by Kotli Lions in the players' draft in Islamabad in the platinum category.

In a fans interaction on social media, Ramiz Raja was asked about preferring Mohammad Haris over Sarfaraz Ahmed.

"It's difficult to drop Sarfaraz Ahmed due to his services for Pakistan but we are planning for the future, I know Muhammad Haris has talent and he will perform"

When Sarfaraz retires, he will burst out like a volcano. Marks my words :))

Saeed Ajmal:

"Haris has been included in the squad for the T20I series against England, I don't know why Sarfaraz Ahmed is being ignored, wonder what the beef is against Sarafraz or what has he done which has meant that he has been removed as captain and dropped from the side; This has happened before with a lot of captains in the past"

Best wicketkeeper of the tournament (Nat T20 Cup): Sarfaraz Ahmed (13 dismissals), PKR 100,000

Sarfraz has been very lucky , overall an average cricketer but played way too much cricket for Pakistan than he deserved .

Sarfaraz knock in QeA trophy

Probably not in Tests but definitely in T20s and ODI

Our fans have such short memories :))

Sarfraz had the same strike rate issues towards the end of his international career that Rizwan has. He averaged less, and had a lower strike rate. Struggled to clear the fence. Now we want him back? What are we, reducing reuse and recycling for the good of the environment?

Rizwan deserves the criticism he has copped in the WC and in the last 2-3 months. This however just shows blind hatred, because you want to replace him with a like for like replacement.

We have Haris now. And should invest in new keeper batsmen. It’s time to stop going backwards every year.
