West Indies opener Evin Lewis jumps 288 places in T20I rankings

Rival openers Evin Lewis of the West Indies and India’s Lokesh Rahul have made huge gains in the latest MRF Tyres ICC Players Rankings for T20I Batsmen after slamming fine centuries in the recent two-match series in Lauderhill, USA, played on 27 and 28 August.

The first match, in which a T20I record aggregate of 489 runs were scored, saw Lewis slam a 49-ball 100 in the West Indies’ total of 245 for six that has helped him move up 288 slots to reach 51st rank. Rahul’s unbeaten 110 in India’s reply of 244 for four has given a lift of 67 places which has put him in 31st place.

The West Indies, which won the series 1-0 with the thrilling one-run win in the first match, not only saw some of its batsmen improve their rankings significantly but the team has also narrowed the gap with India in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings.

Two-time ICC World Twenty20 champion West Indies, which was six points behind second-placed India’s 128 points before the series, is now just one point adrift at 125 with India on 126. New Zealand leads the table with 132 points.

India’s Rohit Sharma has moved up five places to reach 17th place following knocks of 62 and 10 not out, while Johnson Charles of the West Indies has vaulted 26 places to a career-best 23rd following innings of 79 and 43.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for T20I Bowlers, India’s Ravichandran Ashwin returned to the top five as he moved from seventh to fourth position. The off-spinner, who enjoyed a career-high rank of second in February and March this year, grabbed two for 11 in the second match.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (67th) and Mohammad Shami (82nd) were the others to move up the bowlers’ rankings for India. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra, playing his first match since the ICC World Twenty20 in 2014, has re-entered the rankings at 104thposition with three for 24 in the second match.

For the West Indies, Dwayne Bravo moved up five places to 33rd rank, all-rounder Kieron Pollard moved up seven places to 96th position and Brathwaite inched up from 127th rank to take the 119th slot.

Forthcoming T20Is

The team and player rankings are likely to see more changes in the coming days as 15th-ranked Ireland is due to take on 17th-ranked Hong Kong in a two-match series on 5 and 6 September, sixth-ranked Australia and eighth-ranked Sri Lanka will feature in a two-match series on 6 and 9 September, while fifth-ranked England and seventh-ranked Pakistan play a solitary T20I on 7 September.

Ireland could narrow its gap with the United Arab Emirates to two points from 19 with a 2-0 win over Hong Kong, Sri Lanka can overtake Australia only with a 3-0 sweep while England will remain ahead of Pakistan even if it loses the one-off match.

Latest in the long line of T20 superstars from West Indies. Hopefully WI can avail his services in Tests and ODIs and not lose him to T20 leagues.

Absolutely destroying an overhuped Indian bowling lineup. Hitting sixes at will vs the likes of Shami and Ashwin.

Smashing it today, I remember his brutal innings against us in the 3rd T20 earlier this year

Boy he really killed the bowlers today. I watched a bit of his innings in last overs. He just went berserk

Should be signed up for the PSL (assuming he is available).

This guy is quite unbelievable. Only 25 years old, debuted last year, and has some power hitting. I don't just mean his 33-ball 97 not out from yesterday, but he's already shown some immense hitting with a 146 vs SL in an ODI; and two T20I centuries. For a guy that debuted 1 year ago, TWO T20I centuries (102 vs India; 125 vs India) and he also hit a 51-ball 91 vs Pakistan.

This is excluding all his domestic heroics as well.

I don't really know what more to say about this guy. He will win you matches single-handedly and will probably be on my list as one of my favourite emerging players.

WI do really have a good future with their batting: Lewis, Hope, Blackwood, Chase, Bravo, Brathwaite. If they fix their bowling they could climb exponentially in both Tests and LOIs.

Evin is a hit rock miss kind of guy. When the guy clicks, he will totally destroy the opposition. When he does not, he looks like a hack.

Overall, he is worth the risk at the top order. Can win you matches without breaking a sweat.

He's still 25. That's the thing. T think the term 'hack' is subjective but if you're going to strike the ball at a SR of 200+ I guess you'll be labeled as one.

He's not a complete product yet. Needs to cut out unnecessary hacking.

The way he demolished India's bowling attack in that t20 was quite something.

His 91 against Pakistan also left an impression- although he was quiet for the rest of that series from memory.

Surprised there wasn't already a thread for him.

Since when do ppers started taking T20 innings seriously :afridi1

On topic, i saw the highlights and it was brutal hitting. Some of his sixes were huge and out of the ground. But i can make out that like most Windies players, he is also legside hack and Barbados were feeding him on his strength. Definately in upcoming IPL he will fetch millions.

I don't take T20s seriously, but you have to appreciate how effortless he made it look to hit that 97. He's also hit 146 in an ODI too.

When he is figured out will struggle to buy a run. He needs to develop his off side game too.

Carlos Brathwaite 2.0

From what I've seen, he seems to throw his bat blindly too much for me to be excited about yet.

Want every WI cricketer to succeed and beef up their Test line-up.

If they become one of the top Test sides, I don't care if they play world cups and only play batting totay leagues.

No one is ever the "complete batsman" at 25 and after 1 year of international cricket. He has shown he has talent, but indeed he has to improve still. I just can't remember a 25 year old hatting at 300 SR to nearly get a century of late, other than Lewis.

Good point, and my Test prejudice is a big part of my lack of excitement. Still hope he grows.

few years ago Y Pathan hit century off 37odd balls in IPL. We all know he is big hitter but had no defence or game to construct innings on tougher pitches. Thats the problem with these power hitters that they all know how to hit 6s but would struggle to buy you a run when ball is moving an inch and/or turning sqaure.

But his hitting ability reminds of peak Gayle. Stand and deliver

Test-wise, WI have a good batting line up. If Hetmyer and Bravo get into the team, along with the names mentioned in the OP, they'll be really good.

A shame their bowling isn't anywhere near of their glory days.

Yeah I don't doubt that. Most batsmen struggle with lateral movement and Lewis would be prone to that.

Indeed, a Gayle for sure. He doesn't have the aura of Gayle but does possess the hitting ability - to be honest I see more consistency in Lewis too.

Hope unlike Gayle, he stays down to earth and dont let fame and money get to his head.
If he managaes to work hard, he can oneday surpass Gayle.
Most cricketers gets carries away when they get fame and money at young age. Hope its not the case with him.

Gayle relies on a lot on power so he ends up hitting sixes even if he doesn't middle it.

Lewis has a superb bat-swing and his timing is amazing. Some of his sixes yesterday were so effortless.

I thought he was this good from the first time I saw him playing in CLT20 for Trinidad & Tobago against Brisbane Heat.

This guy can take the game away from the opposition even more than the likes of Afridi, Gayle etc when it's his day. That innings against Pakistan in the third T20 was brutal, as were both of his innings against India

I liked Evin Lewis ever since that breezy innings against India in that USA T20I. But what actually made me consider that he might really be a very good player was when he played Imad Wasim comparatively well in the later matches of the UAE series, while his friends looked like absolute tools against Imad. To be honest, he has the talent and potential to be a very enteprising opener, but the lack of foot movement, prejudice against bending the knees, and minimal movements forward I feel he'll be inevitably figured out and just be bowled at with a good length on off stump, he'll invariably struggle against that (a bit like what Junaid K has done to Gayle).
With that being said, at 25, he has a lot of time to iron out such flaws and rectify them..... Considering he remains a Hard Worker and doesn't fall prey to the Money Game.

Reminds me a bit of Warner- he went from club cricketer, to BBL state rep, into List A & Shield & then tests all within about a year.

He achieved his early success by just confidently backing his style/talent at each new level- no compromises.

Later on he survived by growing & adapting & moderating his game- with the same attacking idea as the base or the stage once you are set, depending on format.

Rare player to pull off that transition though- Pollard can only do T20/ODi just barely.

Hits the ball incredibly hard for a short guy. Obviously very strong wrists.

Also seems very hard to get out once he's set - signs of a top bat.

Was a matter of time before he got going in ODIs. Exceptional hitter.

Can be a huge player in shorter formats

He has got some quick hands and picking up the length with ease

What I like about him is he so strong on both front foot and back foot.

Injured.... his knee got stuck into pitch....
looks serious... carried back to pavilion on stretcher

This knock has been coming for a while- great innings.

I mentioned in one of the other threads how odd it was he hadn't got going in ODIs yet- happy to see he has overcome hurdle.

Welcome Back Evin Lewis

He announced his comeback in T20Is. He scored brilliant 50 runs in just 28 balls including 5 fours and 4 sixes in 1st T20I against Sri Lanka

Was supposed to be the next big superstar.

What happened to Hetmyer

Poor attitude and overweight (hence the nickname Hefty). Form has dropped off big time for WI. His SR since 2022 is about 119 which is terrible for a supposed powerhitter.

Hetmyer seemed like the new age superstar for West Indies when he arrived. Like Evin Lewis.

WI produce these freak talents frequently.

Special batting from Evin Lewis, on verge of a century against Sri Lanka in the 3rd ODI 2024. Currently at 85*(53)
