Sarfaraz Ahmed Says Hellooo

Oh hello - yes was waiting for this simplistic reply.

So Sarf said once and apologized.

It seems this was a normal thing in IPL (and probably is)

yes and he was fined and punished for it. And also apologized

hopefully some apologies come Sammy's way too

While this is pathetic and Sunrisers must apologize and investigate who the culprits were, let's not defend Sarfaraz. We all know how serious his apology was and under what circumstances it came.

I am not defending anymore here
But its really funny when i see posters jumping up and down comparing behaviour of fans with The captain of national cricket team..

Before giving me lecture please go back to the Sarfaraz thread and see how blatantly Pakistanis defending Sarfaraz

Classic whataboutery. Stop it and discuss the topic here.

Who were these racist people? If they were part of the crowd/spectators then it doesn't surprise me at all.

However, if these people were from the teams/support staff then its a bigger alarm that indicates a rotten racist culture in the dressing room.

Ohhhoo
Did Sammy anywhere in his post mentioned the same....stop imaging things sir.. Captain of your national cricket team caught live on national television for blatant Racism which shows racists culture in Pakistan national team.. So stop pointing fingers at others.. Look inside may be.. That will help

BreadPakoda Congrats on being a Pakistani :inti

No place for racism anywhere in the world.

Hope he names and shames those who were calling him this.

The problem is when desis use the word 'kalu' - they probably think they're not being racist, some might think its an affectionate term and will likely be baffled by the outcry here.

Woah, I didn’t even think of Sarfaraz. Where have I even defended him?

Typical response by Walawalker. Instead of condemning the wrong act of racism, the guy chooses to attack someone by saying that Sarfaraz did the same thing....I don’t ever recall encouraging Sarfaraz for his racist remark!

Zalmi fans have been calling Sammy “Sammy torr ey kho zamung rorr ey” since 2017, ever since he adopted the Sammy Khan gimmick and was turned into a cartoon character by Javed Afridi for marketing.

Translation: “Sammy you are black but you are our brother”.

torr and rorr translate to “black” and “brother” in Pashto. They rhyme.

Sammy actually found out about it in a live video session with Javed Afridi and Younis Khan in 2017 where Sammy asked for the translation and Younis said that it was racism. Sammy started laughing.

It appears that racism is okay and actually a laughing matter when you are getting paid millions.

Opportunists like Sammy who milk movements are the ones who defame genuine victims and put the whole movement in bad light.

Moreover, I don’t buy the notion that Sammy did not know what kaala/kalu meant until he played for SRH in 2013. The Pakistani media/players referred to the West Indies team as kaali andhi “black storm” in the 70s and 80s, and Sammy has been playing international cricket since 2004 and has played multiple matches against Pakistan and India.

Does he really think people are going to believe that he didn’t know the meaning of Kaalu/Kala until 2013?

These blacks need to stop taking offence to facts ie the colour of their skin is black. If someone tells them these facts to their face, they need to stop getting offended, defensive and sensitive. Be comfortable in your skin and people will eventually stop caring and stop doing it

kaala/kaalu has a negative connotation in South Asia. You guys aren't calling them black out of goodwill. By the way in Australia and some European they call Desis black, would you like that?

On the sub-continent kaala/kaalu can be used as a racist term or as a term of endearment or just to refer to a person who is black. Context is important depending on the use of a word in a language.

Could be a blurry line but on the face of it looks like it was used in a way of poking fun at the poor chap.

Oh I don’t doubt that in this case it was probably a case of it being used as a racist term. I was just making a broader general point about the word and it’s use on the sub-continent.

Let's face it, a lot of desis have no idea they are being racist at times.

Includes Harbhajan and the Monkey thing. Though no sympathy for a mug like Symonds in that instance.

Racism is inherent in desi society on both sides of the border. No point pointing fingers at each other

True. But it is still racist and it is about time desis abandoned this nonsense.

Bit suspicious also for Sammy to bring it up now that he no longer gets picked in IPL. Also you did not know earlier what Kaalu meant?

Desis can be very racist but colour based jokes are a part of culture of both Indians and Pakistanis and these comments are often passed on in humour.

Like i said, my friend's mother calls him Kaalu and calls his other brother who is bit fairer than him as Goru.

There is a point in highlighting it. Whether Pakistanis do it or Indians - its still WRONG!

Desis are extremely racist, and it is so natural that our people don't even know what is racist, what is acceptable. Even if all anti-racism controls are in place, who can stop a crowd member or some random fan outside the team bus from using such slurs.

No point blaming Sammy or denying it. Just go to IPL game & u will find some lowlives shouting Kalu / Kaliya at West Indian players ( to be honest we do such things to fellow dark skinned Indians as well )

Few years back an African American cheerleader was sacked by their IPL team for being black !!!

So yes its a problem but more at a societal level. We need to evolve as a society on matters like racism , LGBTs , women rights

I guess more than IPL & BCCI - its civil society that needs to step up & raise awareness

10 years back gay jokes were common in Bollywood movies & even top actors like SRK wud crack gay jokes at awards functions . But today nobody wud dare make such jokes in Bollywood - this is result of greater awareness abt LGBT rights by NGOs & activists

We need similar stuff on anti - racism front

I did condemn and i am not supporting any kind of racism here
But i am just laughing at the hypocrisy of few posters here.. The moment this news is out Sarfaraz Racism thread come alive and kicking..Spare some time and go that thread to see how blatantly Posters defending Sarfaraz racists remark..

No, spare some time about the people who went after Sarf and have little to say for this case.

Basically dont worry about others and what they said - state your opinion on this.

Kalu is a very common word in subcontinent. It is not nice but it is what it is.

Sammy should not take it to heart.

Nobody should use this word though. It is derogatory. Besides, Sammy is a really friendly dude.

IPL should apologize.

And non desi not?
Bottomline is there are racist in all societies and should be condemned.

I dont know about desis being racist but they are definitely the most self-loathing group in the World.

Racist abuses are hurled at European Football matches all the time. Sometimes the African Footballers are subjected to Monkey Chants and even Bananas are tossed at them. Even Muslim footballers receive abuse in England ( thats never happened to Muslim Cricketers in India). Since all this and much more happens in the developed Western World, so what if a few desis also get carried away and pass on some crude remarks?

Let the White Man develop a perfect, Non-racist society before Desis can have something to emulate.

This is what happens when you don't learn the local language

Brett Lee actually did Indian songs with asha bhosle and appeared on indian tv

From February 2018 - Seems Shoaib Malik also had a dig at Sammy:

When Darren Sammy was introduced as a "Khan" during the presser — a nod to him leading the Peshawar Zalmis to victory last year — Multan Sultan captain Shoaib Malik quipped that he's "never seen a Pathan like [him]."

So many Indians milked it when Sarfraz referred to a player as Kaliya iirc. Even when Sarfraz's was an innocent gaffe and immediately apologised.

The same Indian fans seem to be far more understanding and apologetic towards the racist comments now.

Why wait all these years? Don’t tell me Mr Sammy that you never knew the meaning of “Kaliya/Kaala/Kalu” before?

None the less, there is no room for racism in cricket and administration should take full responsibility for the incident. It’s too late to look into the matter in regards to Sammy’s case, however moving forward IPL/BCCI should educate players, and enforce strict penalties for anyone who breaks the rule including fans in stand.

Making rules without enforcing it will not yield the outcome. Make it absolute clear that racism of any kind will not be tolerated.

Racism comes in many guises. There is no place for it in any way or anywhere.

Those who condone this, how would you feel if you were called those names.

I have a slightly dark skin. I got called kala in the past. It is not the end of the world and I wasn't offended.

I think many people get offended too easily nowadays.

But that doesn't make it right for people to call you that.

The sad thing is this is common in Indian culture the fact that they called perara that too cuz he is south Asian but because he is dark call him Kalu rather than his name same for Sammy I feel sad for both just call the player by their name gosh

Kalu is also used for family, friends, and just about anybody dark. In the right context, it is not racial but a descriptive term. The context is important, and Sammy also needs to understand the cultural sensitivity.

It's no different than saying brown, is that an insult?

yes and he was fined and punished for it. And also apologized

Lol, apologized?

He still laughs at it and isn't ashamed of himself at all.

Flocks of people defended his racism in that thread and still do.

So, no need to act so innocent.

Sammy himself said he and Perera were called "Kalu" , their itself it shows its not a race thing. Though not a good thing in the sub continent the term Kalu is pretty commonly used against people with a dark complexion but i dont think the intention behind it is racism.

Former West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy in an Instagram story had alleged that he and Sri Lanka allrounder Thisara Perera were subjected to racist slurs during his stint with Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sammy, who is the only captain to have won the T20 World Cup twice - in 2012 and in 2016 - expressed his anger over realising what the slur that was thrown at him actually meant.

“I just learnt what that ‘kalu’ meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL. They call me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong Stallion. My previous post tells me something different and I’m angry,” Sammy, who had played 26 matches for SRH between 2013-14 had written on his Instagram page. He did not say when exactly he faced these remarks and by whom.

But the allegations have not been backed by Sammy’s former SRH teammates Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel and Venugopal Rao, who all said that they are unaware about any such instances.

“I don’t think I have heard anyone using those (derogatory) words,” the wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv was quoted as saying by the Telegraph. “I’m not very sure… Not aware of it,” Venugopal, now director of Andhra Cricket Association, said. Irfan, too, added that he is not aware of any such issue being discussed at SRH in 2014, but revealed that he has heard racial jibes being thrown at players in domestic cricket.

“I was there with him (Sammy) in 2014. I feel had this really happened, the matter would definitely have been discussed. So I’m not aware of such things as nothing was discussed in a larger way. But at the same time, we need to educate our people because I’ve seen them (racial jibes) in domestic cricket,” the former left-handed bowler said.

“Some of our cricketers from the south, especially, have faced that in the northern and western parts of the country, though I don’t want to name anyone,” he added.

“What happens is among the crowd, someone tries to act like a jester. It’s not because people are racist, but it’s like someone trying to be popular by saying something seemingly funny that amounts to crossing the line on certain occasions,” Pathan further said.

Sarfaraz Ahmed Says Hellooo

Why will Sarfaraz Ahmed say Hello in this thread? Sarfaraz has nothing to do with the OP. Instead of condemning Indian players you and others have chosen the easiest path to justify it by bringing in Sarfaraz. It seems it is becoming the mentality of most Indians to justify stuff like this by comparing it with our neighbours. Aise banenge superpower lol? :inti

A lot of Hindus refer to Lord Krishna as 'Kala Krishna Kanhaiya' (Kala referring to black). He was apparently, almost completely black in colour.

When the good Lord wasn't spared, I doubt ordinary cricketers will have it any better.

But it doesn't stop millions of Hindus from worshipping Krishna. So even if it is 'racist', it is not meant to demean.

Sammy has lots of Indian fans too.

Meant not to demean. I don't think every player would accept that, and why should they.

I am sure you will like Aussies/Britishers calling Kohli/Sharma '****' too? I mean they also have aussie and english fans so it will be ok too. :inti

Ishant Sharma is one of the guilty parties here. Tagged Sammy as Kaalu in a Instagram post in 2014

BCCI needs to censure him for this act

Technically desis dont use Kaalu in the same fashion as whites use ****** / monkey to demean blacks. Kaalu is widely used even among desis to denote dark skinned fellow

But all this wont cut ice with foreigners. Hence best to educate our folks. Bit like Aussies use word " ******* " more as an endearment than abuse but trying explaining that to a desi

Days after former West Indies international Darren Sammy accused IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad players of racially abusing him during his time with the franchise in 2013 and 2014, an Instagram post from 2014 of Ishant Sharma all but confirms Sammy’s allegations.

Sammy had earlier alleged that he and Thisara Perera were called 'Kalu', which in Hindi means black, during his playing days with the SRH team.

However, a few of Sammy's teammates at the time had refuted the claims, but Sharma's post captioned with a photograph of Sammy with India international Bhuvneshwar Kumar, South African Dale Steyn – “Me, bhuvi, kaluu and gun sunrisers”, tell a different story.

Sammy had also made it clear that before he call out names, the players should reach out and clarify the air.

"Knowledge is power. So recently I discovered a word that I was being called was not what it actually meant, I need some answers. So before I start calling out names I need these individuals to reach out and please tell me there's another meaning to that word and when I was being called it, it was all in love," read the post along with the video.

Sammy said he was ignorant back then and hoped the concerned players would start a conversation with him to clarify the air.

A day earlier, Sammy’s former teammates at SRH Parthiv Patel, Irfan Pathan, and Y Venugopal Rao had refuted such claims. “I don’t think I have heard anyone using those (derogatory) words,” wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv, who has played 25 Tests and 38 ODIs for India, had said on Sunday. “I’m not very sure… Not aware of it,” added Rao, director of the Andhra Cricket Association.

"The word that Hasan Minhaj described was degrading to us black people. I instantly got angry about it, knowing now what that word meant. Knowing now what it meant, I will be messaging those people - you guys know who you are.

"At the time, I didn't know what it meant. I thought it meant strong stallion or whatever and saw no problems with it because I was ignorant about what it meant. I thought it was something uplifting. Whenever I and Thisara Perera were called it, there was always laughter. I thought hey, the teammates are happy, it's something funny.

"You could understand my anger when it was pointed out to me that it wasn't funny but degrading. I'll be texting you guys and asking you guys. When you repeatedly calling me that word over and over again, to the point where I even thought of it as my name, did you mean it as a degrading word in any way?

"I've had great memories in all the dressing rooms I've been in. I've always been one to build up a team, not bring it down.

"All those who used to call me that, you guys know yourselves. Some of you have my numbers, you have me on Instagram and Twitter. Reach out to me and let's have a conversation.

"If it was anything similar to what Minhaj said it meant, I'm very disappointed and angry and deserve an apology. I saw all of you guys as my brothers."

Doesn't look bad to be honest. It looks friendly and doesn't really have any racial undertones to it. Feels like Sammy knew it and was also quite ok with it then.

Sammy is milking the BLM movement like an Australian cow in spring.

People like him discredit such movements as well as the genuine victims.

No one outside the cricket fraternity will even notice. Besides, when these sort of things blow up, everybody and their dog pipes up from underneath the woodwork.

However that said, I can't fault him for speaking up due to the racism directed at him. Desis need to have more awareness of the issue as some of them think its a big joke.

One of my mothers cousin is named Kaalu. Thats his pet name. His parents, family everyone calls him kaalu. We call him Kaalu mama. Its a common pet name in bengal.

It basically comes as a shortened form of Kaalia, one of lord Krishna's 108 names.

No one went to WI or elsewhere and called Sammy Kaalu. Its a common pet name in India.

What next? Hindus should stop using the Swastika because it resembles the hooked cross of Hitler?

Things have to be looked into with context. Sammy could always object, he didnot.

I understand what you're saying about symbolism in Hinduism as correlation to the word. But with Sammy being a black man and the fact he's now spoken up because obviously someone has whispered it in his ear, I believe the connotations are much different.

Sadly and wrongly it's such a big part of our culture that it will take years of education to get rid of it. Just imagine just being defined by your colour and that in a racist and condescending way.

So Sammy doesn't have a problem when its “strong black man”, but has a huge problem if it is “black man”. What a hypocrite.

And kalu itself, means dark person, not black. A minor yet big difference. It is used for everybody, including family and friends.

It's the connotations that the word imply. The word Kalu is more akin to blacky than black.

Problem is the culture of subcontinent where calling someone Kaala is considered a norm without realizing that its completely wrong. Defining someone through his skin colour or body shaming someone due to certain facial features or maybe being bit heavy (Inzi being called Aalu in stadium comes to mind) is something which the society needs to get rid off. Yes things have gotten better but they are still far from where they should be.

Some people were taking high ground when Sarfaraz’s incident happen, when they actually knew how society bas been. I am seeing some similar people from across the border here trying to justify this when they were all over Sarfaraz. There is no excuse for either this or what Sarfaraz did and cricketers playing internationally should be better aware of how sensitive these issues can be.

Sammy could have been a easily called Sam or something else as his nick name but no Hyderbad’s players went with Kaalu and here are some people trying to justify that. Irrespective of why Sammy didnt know it before or it being a social problem, this shouldnt be justified.

I can remember when Sarfraz said what he said to Andile Phehlukwayo, I was saying a black person could find it offensive. People were still defending Sarfraz. Now look Sammy is offended by being referred to as black rather than his name.

My only question is when he found out what it meant at the time, why did he not report it? Why has he waited until now? Furthermore why not say the names now?

Have you been following this at all before you typed this out?

He had thought it was a term of endearment or a positive term. It was only After watching Hasan Minhaj’s piece has he realized what it actually means.

Anyways I don’t think the players who called him that word meant malice or any harm. But that still doesn’t make it okay.

He found out when he watched Hasan Minhaj's video a couple of days ago. That's literally mentioned in the OP.
