[VIDEOS] "I let myself down with some below par performances" : Sohaib Maqsood

Not every player has to play for Pakistan, he's a good quality domestic batsmen for our bowlers to improve apon.

Hasn’t improved as a batsman in the last 5 years , also his fitness.
I would say still a better option than Malik and Asif Ali for T20s.

Big upgrade over Asif and Malik....should have been tried against Zimbos atleast in t20s......he can be the X factor down the order Shadab Imad Rizwan won't have much power hitting ability at international level..... Nawaz and Yamin has....but they r not a reliable bowlers....

Imad is more than capable of striking a few big shots at the end

One of the laziest guys ever to play for Pakistan during the last decade. Fitness levels was absolutely embarrassing for a top level athlete.

Great innings by Sohaib the other day:

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/gek17e" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Brutal innings. Hardly any slogs in the entire knock. Just needs to be more consistent as he definitely has the potential to be a good hitter.

Extraordinary knock to make his team qualify out of nowhere.

He has always been an excellent hitter. 'Good hitter' is term you should use for players like Babar, Zeeshan Ashraf, Zeeshan Malik etc.

That was an innings of a lifetime. Not been a big fan but credit to him, that was an exceptional display of powerhitting.

He was dropped in 2016, yet there was no communication of the head coach with the NCA coaches on how to rectify his issues. This is where a proper system is so important.

He is still the same player, with the same balance issues.
It is a shame because he has insane raw ability, but his basics are so wrong that they hide away all of that natural talent.

Not so fast. He is a TTF at the international level. It's gonna take more than a couple of good knocks to make a comeback.

in t20is anything can happen in Pak cricket. Umar Akmal and Shehzad were picked up for SL t20is with a few good knocks in psl as well.

Today showed what could have been if he had been a little bit more patient and intelligent regarding his batting when he was playing for Pakistan.

Some of the blame has to go on the player for not succeeding at international level. But Misbah and the think tank at the time have some blood on their hands. He started his international career well at up the order. The think tank then decide to turn him into a low order slog when he is a top order player and that's where his success at domestic level was.

I think, 76 of his 82 came from boundaries, of which 13 x 4; which is the amazing part of the innings. On such smaller boundaries, most of such innings are made from lobs that might not clear boundary fielders on standard grounds, but hitting boundary four needs lots of skills, more than hitting a six.

Just a testament of his ability. It's shocking that those three Umar Akmal, Jamshed and Maqsood all failed to become quality LOI batsmen. They should have become our mainstay in the batting line up for a decade. I really thought all 3 would come good, yet not even one. It's sad how things went wrong. And that talent all came at roughly the same time, we could have actually had a good batting line up if those three had done well. Compare to Babar, where he feels like the literal sole huge batting talent in the squad/around selection (in LOIs) right now.

They had the shots, power game, a decent ability to craft an innings (a skill which some of them e.g. umar lost over time). And while fitness wasn't great (though umar was actually pretty fit at one point of time), they were never say Sharjeel level fitness at least when they entered the team. They should have succeeded.

Brough in place for Darren Sammy in PZ squad - has the opportunity to be a hero today

but out for 15

Sohaib Maqsood's career in 2 balls:

Lovely pull shot for 6
Next ball wild slog up in the air and out

His technique is all over the place No strong base whatsoever

His body parts are always going in one direction and his shot attempt the other

Hes playing like a hack these days

Technique yes but also if you bowl a couple of dot balls to him, you know that the next ball will be a wild shot. He seems to have zero patience and game awareness these days.

Yes true He cant seem to play the percentages and score quickly playing low risk shots and rotate the strike

That shot was never on All he had to do was knock it into the gap pick up one or two Ive no idea what he was thinking

Brainless stuff

Spent time at NHPC - nothing to show for but then Abu Dhabi pitch seems to be a batsman's graveyard?

Another nearly man when it comes to Pakistan batting.

But nearly is never good enough in the long run.

The occasional good innings, but most of the time has not done as well as he should have.

Has been a fantastic and crucial innings from Maqsood so far, but worth remembering he was dropped on 1 and 25, both chances that would be taken at international level.

Shoaib Maqsood 2.0 has been quite consistent in domestic cricket for the past 1 year if you look at his record in Pakistan Cup, National T20 cup and PSL, he’s done really really well scoring at 150+ SR.
He’s “ripe” for international cricket and can and should be tried. He has 3-4 years in him.
Instead, Azam Khan and Haider Ali can use a few years in domestic cricket

Since the national T20 cup where he was promoted to the top order he has played some top knocks.

Batting position plays a big role, Rizwan has been the biggest example in recent times and it all started when he was promoted by KPK management to open the innings in National T20, same tournament where Sohaib was also put up the order.

I’ve been saying this guy needs selecting rather than Azam Khan.

- Before that in National T20 cup 2020 he was the 3rd highest run scorer with an average of 32.75 and SR of 167.94.

Thanks for pulling up the data.
It seems he’s worked out his game and something has clicked for him since the National T20 cup.
Some posters said batting position but I reckon it could be more than just that.
Anyway, let’s not forget that many players reinvent themselves like great examples in Hafeez and Rizwan.

I would select Maqsood over fat players like Sharjeel and this other guy who is son of Moin Khan.

Add another 50 to already impressive last year or so of whiteball cricket for him. One of the most powerful ball strikers in Pakistan when on song.

We keep getting told he can’t do it on the international stage but he deserves a go ahead of azam, sharjeel asif , talat and the rest

Good stuff from Sohaib today.

I don't think any player has been as consistent across the board in PSL/domestic limited-overs cricket as Sohaib Maqsood in the last 6 months.

Deserves to get selected.

Looks a much better player when hes playing orthodox power shots from a good firn base than trying to hack and muscle deliveries

He needs to learn from the likes of rizwan and babar that slogging isnt the way to success

Be selective and play proper shots on merit

Maybe he gets the number 5 spot in the t20 WC purely by default. At 34 he isn't a solution but we are desperate.

I would advise against expecting too much from this lazy cricketer. But it's not like the Haiders or Khushdil's can offer anything more.

Has played 4 impactful innings in this PSL 6 so far. Wasn't expecting him to perform well.

Watching him bat in wc2015 was painful tbh. Don't know if he still suffers from Umar Akmal syndrome or has he learned to be patient and content with strike rotation over wild slogs.

He has no idea on how to build on a good start to his innings. Will score 30s and 40s on his best days

Amazing - Maqsood going from strength to strength - holding up Pakistan's innings

Erm, HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED NO! He clearly was ball watching and then responded to a run that was never on!!!

Do you know how running between the wicket works? It was Fakhar's call, and Maqsood responded to it, trusting his call. It was just a bad call by Fakhar.

Lol at all those saying he dine well. He was in 15 off 14 and then 17 off 32 before he got run out. How ridiculous..they teach you work on singles from junior cricket and this dud was blocking the ball at his feet and shouting no straight away lol.

He is one of those players who are good enough for domestic level cricket but not made for international cricket.

He is one of those players who are good enough for domestic level cricket but not made for international cricket.

Yesterday he's the only one that looked international calibre from the entire batting line up, despite the cut short innings!

Can't believe he's already 34 years old. I remember at the start of his career he made a couple of fantastic knocks chasing runs against South Africa, and then he was anointed to become the successor to Tendulkar/Inzamam.

Then he nosedived and was involved in the botched run chase against us in the 2015 WC. Now he is probably a TTF.

Don't think any of the batsmen shone lightly yesterday barring Fakhar. Time to refresh Saturday!

You let yourself down with some below par running, game awareness and calling!

Enough of being this nice guy who keeps getting stepped over! Take a stand for yourself!!

Head and above shoulders above all Pakistan batsmen at the moment - good stuff from Maqsood in 2nd ODI

Would’ve been a much bigger player in a different country. He reminds me of a good Indian batsman with the way he bats.

He looked good while he was there, may be worth persisting with him for a couple of series and see how he goes.

If Masood doesn't come off, then honestly Pakistan should reconsider Umar Akmal and Sarfaraz Ahmed in the middle order. They have played match winning knocks in the past and should they show form at domestic level they must be given another chance.

He can get away with his hacking on Pakistani wickets against low quality bowlers but will always get found out in international cricket against professional bowlers, teams and think tanks

True. Could have been groomed as an opener. Looks to me like a player like Rohit who takes some time on the crease to get going. He has the talent to score daddy hundreds for sure.

He tried to counter-attack, but it didn't work out.

He played his role well, but the others are failing him!!

The others above him are neither keeping their wickets in tact or trying to attack the bowlers.

Drop imam, move Rizwan to opening and Maqsood to 4.

It is not tape ball cricket, hyped for nothing. Not international level.

Poor technique against the short ball,No ability to rotate strike and atrocious runner between the wickets. Not suited to 50 over cricket.
Can be tried in T20's in hope of quick fire 30

We have found a decent (for our standards) middle order batsman for next few years. Should bat at 4/5 with Haider at 5/6.

Hasn’t improved as a batsman in the last 5 years , also his fitness.
I would say still a better option than Malik and Asif Ali for T20s.

Bumping this again, if he performs in t20 then select him in t20 not ODIs.

Pakistan’s main problem is selecting t20 stars for ODIs and tests

Haris rauf , Hasnain and Faheem are another example
