[VIDEOS] Is it time to start thinking about dropping Babar Azam?

Average of 21 cannot be called as terrible.

He needs to be given confidence. He needs a Rambo Raja to boost him up. :inti

Babar Azam's scores in the three-match series against Australia:

21 & 14 in 1st Test in Perth
1 & 41 in 2nd Test in Melbourne
26 & 23 in 3rd Test in Sydney

This is a poor show from Babar as he scored just 126 runs in 3 test matches. Should be dropped now?

Its not just this series, his overall performance in SENA isn't great.

Test performance in WI isn't great either.
I can’t believe it, a once in a lifetime talent for Pakistan will be remembered for scores against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies and Zimbabwe only

But in England he has superb average in Tests
He has some 50s,

He had decent numbers in Australia before this tour as well. The guy doesn’t improve, just gets worse the second time round everyone has had a good look at him.

In Babar Azam's 31 away test matches, he has managed to secure only two centuries. This statistic is far from impressive, especially considering his stature as a standout player of this era.

Maybe it's time to downgrade Babar's central contract. It's not deserving of the top most category given his lack of performances in the last year

Nah, you don't drop any good batsman based on one series. Also, Fans needs to lower expectations from Babar when he is not playing on home highways.

Overreaction lmao, yeah let's go ahead and drop one of our few decent battters

Remind me again, for all of our so-called experts, which domestic assets we possess that can replicate a tenth of what Babar has done in international cricket?

Where are your so-called golden boys, the ones who were so much more talented and such better batsmen?

Or have you forgotten from what hole you dug up those names from?

Nothing against Saud Shakeel, a player with great potential with some technical issues, but how has he fared on this tour?

We should not be worried about dropping Babar, we should be worrying about the evident drop in the IQ of some cricket fans alongside the dropping of catches in every game.

Take your agendas and respectfully shove them up your ...

Babar's central contract definately should be downgraded to B or even C given his lack of performances and the fact he is no longer captain.

There has to be accountability after letting down the nation consistently in big tournaments and players need to be reminded at all times that they are not above the game

I guess then we only have Rizwan on a PCB paycheck.

People only want to drop Babar for punitive reasons. They feel the need to punish him for his disappointing performances.

Pakistani fans are some of the most emotional in the world, and logic flies out of the window during these times.

Babar is and remains the best batsman in Pakistan currently. Suggesting otherwise is genuinely lol-worthy.

Pakistan Cricket is not finding a replacement for Babar Azam anytime soon.

You know how foolish a fanbase is when they try and replace their best asset, instead of trying to help improve the asset.

I'm glad to see that Babar still has the hunger and commitment to go rectify his technique. Bad phases happen to any cricketer.

Pakistan fans will be the first to throw you away if you don't meet their exceedingly obnoxious expectations of becoming the best in history.

Those posters here who love the statistical comparisons with the likes of Williamson, Smith, Kohli, etc. don't have the capacity to understand that Pakistan does not need Babar to try and become the next Williamson or the next Kohli.

Pakistan needs Babar Azam to become the best version of himself.

He has a very high ceiling and lots of runs left to give.

I think he won't be able to perform in the T20 New Zealand series. If so it will be upto the management if he deserves to get dropped in T20s. Tests rarely happen and in ODIs he still has his place.

There's nothing wrong in enforcing a culture of accountability and competition.

Dropping him for a few games will be beneficial for Pakistan. We will find another option and It will bring out the best in babar too.

Babar, honestly hasn't done nearly enough in test cricket to earn such god like status. He should be treated like any other senior player.

Babar is technically and aesthetically the best Pakistan batter.
However, it is a results driven business and no one should be allowed to rest on past performances— note the debate around Smith and Labuschagne in Australia.

All fine batsmen have slumps but if it is overly prolonged they need to give way.
Asian sides, particularly, find this difficult.

Yeah, naw.

Babar's acheivements in test cricket aren't that significant.

You talk about Saud Shakeel but he has comfortably out batted Babar ever since he came into the side. Yes, he isn't suited for SENA but in subcontinent he performed better than Babar. Give Kamran Ghulam his opportunity too

Babar is in horrible form for over a year now across formats. Even his head doesn't seem in the right place.

Dropping him for a few games will hurt no one.

Babar has been simply overrated by cricket experts. He is even not close to Kohli. He is a good batsman but not in that league of Kohli yet and I m afraid he will never be. This is his 2nd Australian tour and his performance is very poor.

3rd Aus tour.

To be fair a big reason for the Babar Azam hype train is these faulty ICC rankings. Babar has not scored a test 50 for 1 year and he is still ranked No 5

In ODIs he has not played any game since WC & yet he regained the No 1ranking

Can u imagine a tennis player not winning any ATP event for 1 year and still ranked No 5. Can u imagine a boxer not winning any bouts for 1 year and still getting ranked No 1 in rankings. No way

Whoever designed the ICC ranking system needs to get his head checked. No way the ranking algorithm makes any sense

But the obsession with ICC rankings ahve created this massive hype around Babar Azam which has got badly exposed over the last 1 year

Babar is aethetically pleasing but his technique has many glaring issues. Big gap between bat & pad, inablity to play raw pace ( Mark Wood ), struggle against spin, tendency to square up against the outswing

No wonder he struggles in SENA

World cup runs deserve more value especially against good oppositions.

He went from being compared to the likes of Smith, Kohli, Williamson and Root to now being compared with the likes of Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali.

He’ll never be in my top 10 best cricketers of Pakistan.

For all his flaws, Azhar Ali had 10 away tons. Babar has 2 so far.

I posted this in the Day 3 match thread:

Super disappointing how poor our top 5 batters have been throughout the series. Openers, Babar & Saud have been completely useless with basically Shan & Rizwan scoring and Agha chipping in a bit. That is simply not good enough.

It's one thing for openers to struggle against new ball vs Starc & Hazelwood but Babar has the cushiest position in Tests at 4 and this is his 3rd tour here. His abysmal performance is completely unacceptable and it's a part-timer you are getting out to? Unreal.

I think there needs to be a lot more and louder criticism of Babar at this point. His performance for the past year+ has been garbage with literally zero notable performances. It dates back to the 22' WC, in which he was probably one of the worst players in the WC. Other than scoring a couple of times on Pakistani road pitches in the Test home series, he's been utterly useless. He was horrific in the WC both as captain & batter. He was useless in Test series vs SL and Pakistan won on the backs of great performances from Saud/Abdullah/Agha. Now, he's been horrible again in this Test series which easily could look a lot different if Babar was any better.

Fair to wonder how much Babar has tarnished his own legacy at this point. He will be remembered for the back to back abysmal WC performances, the epic failure in the Test home series vs Aus/Eng/NZ where they didn't muster a single win. He will just remembered as the King of soft runs and always went MIA when his team needed him most. I am disappointed beyond belief from Babar.

You don't drop him just yet but clearly, criticism is definitely warranted. I think taking off some time to relax, spend some time with family & friends and come back re-charged & re-focused would do him a lot of good.

There are barely a few or maybe just a couple knocks in his career that will be considered great.

For 2 years now everyone was waiting for him to go one step further, one step further but he fell back instead and now looks like a shadow of his former self.

Babar can feast and score all the stat padding 50's and centuries against the likes of Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, Zimbabwe and the C, D teams of England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, everyone knows exactly where his level is vs the A sides of Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and against India.

He is at the same level as Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq. Heck Azhar Ali has a double century against Australia against a more prime version of Hazelwood, Starc. Asad Shafiq also almost helped Pakistan chase a hurculean 400 plus score against a prime version of Starc, Hazelwood.

Babar Azam in comparison to chulo main pani daal ke sharam se doob ke mar jaana chahiye.

His fans saying everyone goes through a lean patch… truth is he’s in his peak years as a batsman right now.

Lean patches for a young batsman arent this long.

You expect a 2 year long lean patch from someone in their mid 30s about to enter the twilight of their careers.

Kohli has 3 year lean patch.

Kohli has 3 year lean patch.

Kohli had a gigantic body of work which merited his selection. Even during this lean 3 year phase he scored many vital match winning fifties for India and generally didn't look to be playing badly apart from not scoring any runs.

Babar in comparison hasn't done much in his career in comparison to the hype he has generated

Azhar has 10 away tons. Babar has 2 away ton so far in 31 tests. A long way to go to catch up to Azhar's number for away ton.

It’s time - he needs to learn to value his talent. He’s been all over the place.

Yes, but my post said he is the best aesthetically and technically Pakistani batter.
Technique is no longer valued in Pakistan cf India where the batsmen are well schooled and have wonderful techniques (whether this continues with the dominance of T20 remains to be seen).

So, whilst he has undoubted deficiencies, I’m not sure there is a Pakistani batter who has a sounder technique — perhaps damned by faint praise

Azhar Ali was a fine Test player — actually a really good one

Babar wanted a rest for the test series but it was declined and reports are suggesting that babar will be rested for the t20 series.

Sarfraz scored fewer runs in this Test series than Sajid Khan.

If you're gonna troll, at least do so with some intelligence.
And Yasir Shah scored more runs than Smith in the 2019 series so what

All good players have a poor run of form. Sarfraz was forced to play at a fast Perth pitch where all our batting bar Shan failed. If a little patience was shown and he got the chance to play in Melbourne and Sydney than I can guarantee he would have been in the runs

Any how it’s pointless doing discourse with those who have already made their mind

What's Sarfraz's overall record in Australia ?

That record doesn't give much confidence he'd transform into Don Bradman after his Perth failure.

Of course he should be dropped.

He didn’t do anything in the T20 World Cup 2022, Asia Cup 2022 & 2023, and the ODI World Cup 2023. That is four consecutive tournaments without performing.

In tests, he hasn’t done anything of note since scoring a century in the SL tests in 2022.

There were no performances of note in 2023. Performances against Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabawe, C New Zealand sides don’t count. Now that he isn’t the captain, he has to earn his place in the team and he isn’t doing that at the moment. No more free riding in the team for this fake king.

You will see he will be on fire during the T20I series against New Zealand.

He was aight, but he was never compared to the likes of Kohli and Smith unlike Babar who some say is better than Kohli.
Becouse Azhar Ali don't had PR brigade unlike Babar Azam . Azhar was better rest batsman than Babar Azam .

Resting Babar is fine, I don't disagree with it.

But the rest should come in another format.

I don't think Babar is needed for the whole T20I series against NZ. Play him at the beginning and then give him a leave, however many weeks before PSL.

It will give him a chance to get out of a mental block.

Our next test is in 8 months, I don't see Kamran Ghulam getting a chance there.

We play about 4-5 tests a year. We unfortunately do not have the luxury to be experimenting too much.

Ghulam will probably have a better chance of getting a place in white ball cricket, or, he will compete with Saud/Agha in test matches.

Well Babar, cant play genuine pace and cant play spin. Guess we have to wait for T20 series vs Zimbabwe to see those 100s.

This is the toughest test of his mental strength in international cricket.

He needs some time away from this political atmosphere of PCB. Although I am not a big fan of PSL, but a more professional environment maintained by Mohammad Akram at PZ might rejuvenate his energy levels.

Babar needs to be dropped for two reasons:
  • For his own sake
  • To send a clear message to the rest of the dressing room that no one will make the team by reputation
Babar needs time off to assess his priorities in his life. His diet and belly is unacceptable for someone who's trying to compete with the Fab 4. He also needs to practice and work on his technique particularly against spin.

What good is perfect technique if the runs that he is attempted to score are not to create the impact his team needs? He should forget about chasing records. Test cricket is gone for him, at best he will end up with 18-20 Test centuries now.

He won’t get to 30 ODI tons. And T20i runs mean nothing. So in the last decade or half decade of his career, he needs to chase wins and score runs that matter. If records come along the way, fine so be it. But chasing records and failing is the worst kind of cowardly failure

False comparison — Smith is arguably the best batsman of the last ten years and Kohli is another legend.
Only fools (or deluded Pakistani fans) would have compared Babar with Smith, Kohli, Williamson and Root.
He was a tier below, but had the opportunity to perhaps get to their level — he has failed to date.

Azhar Ali scored over 7000 test runs with a Test average above 40 - pretty solid performance to be fair.

Sorry but how can he possibly hold a candle to Rizwan now in that regard. 2nd best possibly but Rizwan is clear now as #1.

Oh yes who can forget about his pursuit for milestones and batting stats.

When he retires he’ll regret not being able to exceed the likes of Inzi, MoYo and YK when he had PCB’s full backing from a very young age.

There are hardly any memorable innings that he’s played because he’s been a low impact player who’s feasted on inferior bowling attacks.

His mindset is just not good. When he playing minnows and B/C bowling attacks, he should be taking these opportunities to improve his batting skills and pull off something special, for example go for a 60 ball ton in ODIs but instead he limits himself to run a ball hundreds. This type of approach does nothing but hold him back.

He’s shown little improvement against spin. His shot range against the spinners is severely limited.

2 x test hundreds away from home is unacceptable. He’s starting to look like a superior version of Asad Shafiq in the longer format.

If Pakistan don’t want to drop Babar and want to continue to marketing him as one of the best modern day players then they may as well organise a 7 match T20I series against Nepal.

The 2nd point is particularly crucial. The fact that Masood gifted a Babar jersey to David Warner after the Sydney match shows the extent to which Babar ko sar pe chara ke rakha huwa hai.

Yes when facing Zimbabwe and Nepal in white ball cricket.
Well, there are matches against Ireland & freaking USA/Canada in the world cup. If he & his best mate can't muster up atleast one 100+ partnership as well as individual 100's on those free ridings then he should simply hang up his boots for good. I am expecting "this too shall pass" on US soil.

I won't say drop him but at least give him a rest so he can rethink about his game and work on his shortcomings

Not the time to drop him yet. Who would replace him? He is still one of the best batters from Pakistan.

Doing good in Australia is not easy. Most teams fail. Most batters fail.

Pakistan's T20 Captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi during the New Zealand vs Pakistan T20 series pre-game Presser:

“I don’t think Babar Azam’s form is that bad. He is the best, and he has scored so many runs for Pakistan on many occasions in the past. A few bad innings don’t make much of a difference, because he is a great player. He has performed as a captain and as a player for Pakistan, and Babar Azam will always be our best player.”

He is not even on level of azhar ali, misbah and shafiq the test batsman. Forget comparing him with younis khan, saeed anwar and inzi.

Does anyone know the last time Babar and Shaheen played first class cricket domestically?

My opinion is that these players, after tasting fame and T20 cricket, stop playing domestic cricket and regress. First class cricket is where players iron out deficiencies and grow. With that, regression is natural.

I frequently see him getting bowled this way. Trying to tap it too close to the body with an angle bat. Any movement from the ball lead to his dismissal. pandya dismissed him in the world cup. I think Bumrah also dismisse dhim like that once. Then he edged one to slip. There is a technical weakness around the off stump that is being exploited by bowlers.

Ramiz Raja on his YouTube channel urged Babar to avoid social media and focus on his game for better results:

"It seems the entire nation does not have a problem with anything except the form of Babar Azam. Unfortunately, what happens is when you lose a match and you have not scored runs and if you are Babar Azam, then you become a headline - How did we lose? What did he do? What was his contribution? And then this is the era of social media. Anybody can criticize and ridicule anyone, this should be discouraged as much as possible,"

"Cricket is in our blood but don't know for how long if we continue to lose matches like this in Test cricket. Fan following increases with wins and fans identify themselves with success stories. Babar Azam has had a famous success story. There is no doubt that he has been a big player in all three formats,"

"So what does he have to do? First, avoid social media. Second, stay in the moment. When you are not able to score runs, it becomes a mental game and you start second-guessing. So you start worrying and that worrisome look is evident on Babar's face. He is trying hard, so frustration will be there. What's important is how he is batting."

bhai they themselves don't even know when they last played first class cricket here in Pakistan.
