Jamie Smith - wicket-keeper batter playing for Surrey county is a player that everyone needs to stand up and notice.

This kid is simply dynamite. I saw Harry Brook playing in a county game a couple of years back and thought "wow, Harry is going to be a global superstar" and now I see Jamie Smith.

His bat swing is easily the best I've seen in a long long time. Effortless stroke-making at its finest. England are simply wasting their time on Ben Foakes. Jamie Smith is their future but he is ready right now so he should be their present.

England has an embarrassment of riches right now and Jamie Smith is another product of a fantastic factory of world class batting talent.

Jamie Smith scored 126 from 86 balls as England Lions were bowled out for 405 in response to Sri Lanka A’s first innings total of 332. The hosts ended proceedings on Day Three on 202/3, leading by 129 runs.

Following his century, Smith said: “It is certainly the most entertaining and most enjoyable innings that I have ever played. I would say it is the best innings that I have every played!”

Smith entered with England 122/3 late on Day Two. Accompanied by Durham opening batter Alex Lees, the pair put a stand of 169 runs before Lees agonisingly fell for 97.

Unbeknown to Smith in the middle, his century broke the record for fastest century by an England Lions player – breaking Luke Wright’s 91-ball century for the England Lions vs New Zealand A in 2008/09.

On his record England Lions ton, Smith added: “I didn’t know that it was a record century and I didn’t go out there to achieve that obviously.

“When you get in that situation and you’re flying along you are just focusing on being positive and trying to hit boundaries – hit the ball as far and as hard as I can.”

Under the guidance of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England’s Test team has adopted an aggressive style of play – particularly in their batting. The attacking nature has filtered through to the England Lions.

“You definitely take on board the style of play that the England team are employing because that’s the style they want to see,” added Smith.

“The coaching staff here give you the freedom to go out and play that way. I’m not focusing on whether I get out, it’s about how you can make runs and being positive.

“That has certainly helped me to make runs here and play the way I did.”

Reflecting on his first England Lions tour, Jamie said: “It is the next step in my career and it has been an opportunity to show my skills and test myself against some really good bowlers.

“It’s good to get in this environment and to play against spin and try and adapt my game to that.”

Going into the fourth and final day, the Lions need to take early wickets before chasing their total down.

On the state of play, Smith finished by saying: “The pitch is pretty flat but the beauty of us scoring so quickly is that it gives us an opportunity and time to bowl them out.

“We’ll aim to do that in the morning and then well hopefully have a chase. We won’t fear chasing any total.”

Jamie Smith picked up by Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred.

Time for him to showcase his extraordinary talent to the world.

Wow. Very much impressed. Looks like a serious talent. If he can score quickly like he has in the County Championship then I think he will fit into this England line-up like a glove. As great of a keeper as Foakes is, his style of batting doesn't feel in sync with Bazball.

Jonny on the other hand is very unreliable with both gloves and bat.

Nasser Hussain on debutant Jamie Smith via Sky Sports:

"I don't think people were in doubt that Jamie Smith would play an innings like he did."

"You never know, there's a big difference between county cricket and international cricket."

"First off all, the pace. West Indies, for all we've spoken about, they have a couple of bowlers that can hurry you."

"Secondly, the occasion, the biggest stage, playing with the likes of Ben Stokes. Can you rise to the occasion? That's what was impressive."

"And the role he plays. Stokes described Foakes as the best keeper in the world. Foakes was doing ok with the bat, it was about the style of play. They want someone to put the bowlers under pressure, like Baristow."

"Bairstow epitomised Bazball."

Jamie Smith brings up his third Test fifty in just four matches. His third fifty comes against Sri Lanka in the first Test.

I know it's early days and this is probably unfair, but he really does look a very rare talent doesn't he. So much of Pietersen in his game.

Maiden Test century for Jamie Smith

What a moment for the young English batter! Jamie Smith brings up his first Test century in just his 4th match, against Sri Lanka in the 1st Test.

After a impressive 95 in his last Test innings against West Indies, Jamie has taken to Test cricket like a duck to water. He's shown a great temperament and versatility, exactly what you dream of from your number 6.

A big future beckons for the 24-year-old.

Sky Sports Cricket's Michael Atherton on Jamie Smith:

"He has had an excellent start to his Test match career.

"He has looked an excellent investment by the Test match selectors and his keeping has been great.

"A couple of half-centuries before this maiden hundred.

"He played the situation beautifully yesterday and benefitted from Sri Lanka being sloppy this morning."

This was a great call by @shariqnoor . Called it a year before his selection. I thought Ollie Robinson would be ahead in the pecking order. But Jamie Smith has proven to be a terrific player.

He is batting is good enough for him to bat at no.3 or no.4 for England.
Interesting to see how he does in Pakistan and New Zealand this year.

The only concern I have is I have not seen him how he plays when he's struggling for form. That's the true test of any cricketer.

The guy is dynamite when in form and will be a superstar. But let's just wait on how he fares in India against spin. I would still believe that he'll be fine. He's technically solid and his bat swing is incredible.

Yep. He looks a very solid player. Will do well in Australia also because I think he can handle bounce.

What a call out by the OP. You should be a selector. You have an eye for talent.

Taken Jamie Smith 12 balls to move from 15 to 50. Wonderful batting in second innings of third Test against Sri Lanka

Sky Sports' Mark Butcher:

"Smith has got a fantastic idea of how to bat with the tail and he has given evidence in his short Test match career he can play in different gears."

"He has a defensive technique and puts away the bad ball, there's no shot he doesn't have and the power of the striking is eye opening."

"In the space of a couple of overs he has put the game in England's favour and he has been unbelievably impressive and another superb pick from the England selectors."

Jamie Smith heroics for England in 3rd Test remind Paul Collingwood of Adam Gilchrist, he told reporters after Stumps on Day 3:

“He (Smith) is certainly an entertainer.”

“You go back to the days of Adam Gilchrist when he came in at seven for Australia. He (Smith) is going to put a lot of teams under pressure when you have the skills and the power he has. It sucks the life out of the opposition when someone has the ability to do something like that. He’s certainly shown some great skills in his short Test career.”

Fifty up for Smith against Pakistan in the 3rd test. Taking his team out of trouble and never looked like out of control so far in his inning.

Sky Sports' Nasser Hussain:

"Got his tempo right. Got his shot selection right. Runs are more valuable when they come in a crisis and that's exactly what he's done. A revelation since he's come into the England side."

Fell short of a well-deserved Hundred but it was a great inning.

--------------

Sky Sports' Michael Atherton:

"What an excellent innings this has been from the young Surrey wicket-keeper. Rather rescuing a desperate situation for England just after lunch. He's played quite superbly."

Exceptional cricketer. Has the potential to be England's best ever keeper bat.

Ultimately, i do see him moving up the order and leaving the gloves to one of Rew or Robinson. Think he is good enough to bat 4/5.

Shown acumen to bat under pressure in his short career thus far. Looks as if he has a long future in an England shirt.

Same thoughts.
He is good enough to bat no.3 or no.4 and he is equally good against both pace and spin wonder of Pope can be replaced by either Rew,Robinson or Jordan Cox.

Taller boundary riders might have helped today

Phenomenal knock though. Just the right aggression

Jamie Smith: England batter eyes regular finisher role in T20 side after making debut against India

Jamie Smith wants to nail down a role as a T20 finisher as he seeks to be England's man for all seasons.

After cementing his position as England Test wicketkeeper in 2024 despite missing last month's tour of New Zealand as he took paternity leave, Smith is now desperate to establish himself in one-day internationals and T20s.

He has seven ODI caps and briefly caught the eye on his T20 debut in Chennai on Saturday, confidently stepping out of his crease and belting India spinner Varun Chakravarthy for six from his fourth ball.

While England went 2-0 down in the five-match series after an agonising two-wicket defeat, Smith's 22 off 12 deliveries is what England require from their number six towards the back end of an innings.

And with more seasoned performers ahead of him in the batting order, Smith, given his chance in the second T20 because Jacob Bethell was unwell, will grab at any chance he receives with both hands.

"I want to play all formats for England," he said, ahead of the series resuming in Rajkot on Tuesday. "That's the main goal. I'm seeing these games [as] an opportunity I get to experiment and showcase my skills, I want to do that.

"It would be nice to fix down a role so that everyone knows that you are going to be that number six batter in T20, it gives you a little bit more clarity to train and prepare with.

"I've got a very clear role in the Test side, keeping wicket and batting seven. That makes it much easier to prepare for. I feel confident I can go out and perform in any role that is thrown at me."

If he is to be an all-format regular, Smith may have a busy 12 months ahead with next month's Champions Trophy followed by a home Test series against India in the summer and next winter's Ashes in Australia.

The 24-year-old is therefore thankful he had some downtime before Christmas as his partner gave birth to their son, Noah, which meant Smith opted out of England's most recent Test series in New Zealand.

His decision brought about the possibility of him losing his Test place and while Ollie Pope performed well as England claimed a 2-1 series win, it was a risk Smith was all too happy to take.

"There's no regrets on that front," he said. "The six weeks I spent [at home] was the best six weeks I've ever had. It was a break for a little bit and then it was some early mornings and late evenings!

"It's been fantastic to get some time away from the game and a busy schedule, it's always nice and it's something you don't get the luxury to get.

"I'm grateful for the support of the guys here and the England and Wales Cricket Board in general for the way they went about it and allowing me to make that decision on my own without any added pressure."

While many of his England team-mates in India put themselves forward and were snapped up for the Indian Premier League, Smith declined to throw his name into the hat for November's player auction.

"With a young family at home and the potential to be away a lot with England this year, there's a lot of cricket, it was best for me to pull out this year," Smith added.

"Family has always been my priority, you are a long time on the road and any time I can spend at home, is good. This is a long tour, two or three months so I want to be at home as much as I can.

"Hopefully I can showcase what I am about as a cricketer for potential IPL moving forward. it's definitely something I want to try."

Jamie Smith at No. 3 at the Champions Trophy:

15 vs Australia
9 vs Afghanistan

As great a batsman he is, he is appalling behind the stumps.

Came in on a hat-trick ball, went on to slam an 80-ball century before lunch.

Jamie Smith, absolutely sensational

Hope England turn him into a specialist batter and put him up the order. He is on Brook's level but can play spin even better than him.
Rew or Jordan Cox can come in as the keeper bats. Either that or Root can move to no.3 and Pope can take up the gloves can move down the order if they are adamant with his selection.

Only Andy Flower has scored more runs as a wicketkeeper in a single Test than Jamie Smith.

Seems to be a really good talent. I am sure he has turned IPL scouts interest towards him. Possible IPL contract upcoming.

Life changing $$$ is always good!

Jamie Smith has become the joint‑fastest batter to reach 1,000 Test runs ( just 21 innings). He joins Quinton de Kock at the top of the list.

Smith’s brisk 51-run knock from just 56 deliveries took his runs tally in the ongoing series past the 400-run mark, becoming only the third wicketkeeper batter from England to amass the landmark.

He now has 407 runs in five innings at a remarkable average of 135.66, meaning he was in touching distance of setting a new record of scoring the most runs as an England wicketkeeper in a Test series.

Most runs by an England wicketkeeper in a Test series:
  • Alec Stewart – 465 runs against South Africa in 1998
  • Les Ames – 417 runs against West Indies in 1930
  • Jamie Smith – 407* runs against India in 2025

He is immensely talented, no wonder England binned Foakes for him.

He is going to be their all-format keeper for years to come now that Buttler is getting to the end of his career.

Jamie Smith has etched his name alongside legends by becoming one of only three wicketkeepers in Test cricket history to score over 1,000 runs while maintaining a batting average above 50. With an impressive average of 55.57 from 1,056 runs, Smith joins South Africa’s AB de Villiers (57.41) and Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower (53.70) in this elite club. While de Villiers and Flower are celebrated for their longevity and class, Smith’s entry into this rarefied list signals the emergence of a new-generation keeper-batter who is not only reliable behind the stumps but also a formidable force with the bat.
