Let’s see who eventually takes part.

Looking at the Asian XI I would play

Jayasuriya
Dilshan
Hafeez
Yousuf
Misbah
Afghan
Afridi
Gul
Murli
Akhtar
Vaas

In the climax of the Hollywood musical, Mary Poppins Returns, the eponymous English nanny turns the clock, the famed Big Ben of London, back by five minutes. Miss Poppins, played by the delightful Emily Blunt, had the magical powers to do that.

Over the next few days at the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium, the clock will turn several times over in the inaugural edition of the Legends League Cricket. The three teams – India Maharaja, Asia Lions and World Giants – feature some of the all-time cricketing greats.

The teams will play each other twice before the final on January 29.

The Indian team includes Virender Sehwag, who is expected to join after missing the first few games, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Irfan Pathan and Nayan Mongia.

The Asia Lions comprises men from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It features Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Mohammed Hafeez, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mohammed Yousuf, Misbah ul Haq, Habibul Bashar and Ashgar Afghan.

The World Giants are Kevin Pietersen, Jonty Rhodes, Brett Lee, Daren Sammy, Imran Tahir, Herschelle Gibbs, Daniel Vettori, Morne Morkel, Brendan Taylor, Kevin O’Brien and Monty Panesar.

Some players have only recently retired and look fit enough for the franchise leagues. Many of them may have bid goodbye a while ago and taken up coaching and commentating jobs, but they could still replay from memory and produce those scintillating strokes and magic balls.

The matches will be aired live by Sony Ten 1 and Sony Ten 3.

Shoaib Akhtar can still bowl quick: Misbah-ul-Haq

Asia Lions skipper excited to see so many legends in the tournament

He may have crossed 40, but Mohammed Kaif believes he still could do something on the field. “I can still move around a bit,” said Kaif on the eve of the opening match of the Legends League Cricket. “Watch me on TV,” he added.

Kaif, one of the finest fielders of his time, is leading the India Maharajas in the absence of Virender Sehwag in the first few matches. “He will join later,” said Kaif about Sehwag.

Kaif’s men take on Asia Lions at the Al Amerats Cricket Stadium on Thursday in the first match of the 10-day tournament. He said it would not be a walk in the park for anyone.

“When I was part of such a league a few months ago, I saw the passion and love for the game in the retired players,” he said. “The commitment was there.”

Kaif said he was happy that the organisers were able to bring players from all over the world. “It is a great effort,” he said. “Yes, fans love to watch India and Pakistan playing each other. I hope we could get some fine moments here (Pakistan players are part of Asia Lions).”

Misbah-ul-Haq is leading the Asian side. “It is good to see so many legends in this tournament,” he said. “We hope to entertain people.”

The former Pakistan captain said he was looking forward to playing against some of his former rivals from India.

“Playing with each other is fun and it is also very competitive whether it is Legends League or wherever we play,” he said.He added he was impressed with the venue here. “It is a scenic ground,” he said. “And the facilities are wonderful.”

Misbah said Shoaib Akhtar was still quick. “He can still bowl at 140kmph plus,” he said.

Misbah is about 50 years old and the guy is still hitting sixes. Marvelous fitness

Back to Back sixes by Misbah Ul Haq.

But departs on the third. 44 scored by him..

Good innings, bit nostalgic aswell. Loved reliving his batting in 2022 :)

The Delhi High Court has refused to stay 'Legends League Cricket' on a lawsuit by a person who claimed to have conceptualised having a tournament with retired legendary players, saying said that no one can claim copyright over the game of cricket which has several permutations and combinations of “innings” and “overs”. Justice Asha Menon said that plaintiff Samir Kasal -- who contended that the defendants i.e. organisers of 'Legends League Cricket' misappropriated his idea-- failed to make out a prima facie case for grant of any interim relief and that none of the features of his concept reflected original thought.

The plaintiff's ideas have been in the public domain for long and “none can claim an exclusive right to any of these ideas”, the judge added.

The first edition of 'Legends League Cricket' began on January 20 in Oman.

Justice Menon further said that the format of 'Legends League Cricket' was “significantly different” from that of the plaintiff and the defendant organisers were not copying any idea or concept of the plaintiff.

The cricketers cannot be injuncted from playing for the defendants or any other organizer, as the plaintiff can claim no such exclusive right, she stated.

To protect the interest of the plaintiff, the judge nonetheless directed defendant organisers to “maintain clear accounts of their earnings and expenditure in respect of the match/matches that are being organized at Oman (UAE) and file the same in court within one month of the conclusion of the league matches”.

The court issued summons to the organisers on the lawsuit by Kansal and said if an order of stay is passed at this stage, loss to the defendants, the players, the sponsors, the media partners and the public at large cannot be compensated.

“To say that because the plaintiff conceptualized a league match with retired cricketers in a 'T-10 Test Format' to be played at venues where there is Indian diaspora, and that being his idea, had become his exclusive right, is to stretch it too far to claim a right to seek an injunction against the 'Legends League Cricket' tournament organized by the defendants,” said the court in its order on January 19.

“In this case, the fundamental similarity will be the 'game of cricket' and no one can claim a copyright to the 'game of cricket'. Several permutations and combinations in the format of playing the 'game of cricket' have been evolved over a period of centuries. Therefore, it is reasonable that there can also be no copyright in the evolution of cricket over a period of time, from a '5-Day Test Match Series', to the latest of 'T-20 Matches/One-Dayers'. Any such permutations and combinations would involve “innings” and “overs”,” it added.

The plaintiff, represented by senior advocate Sandeep Sethi and advocate Srivats Kaushal, argued before the court that he was a well-known person in the sports industry and had worked with the defendant organisers on holding a limited-over cricket tournament with two teams namely, “Asia XI” and “World XI” made up of world cricket legends who have since retired.

What were the speeds of akhtar and how was murali bowling??? Does the former have the pace the latter got the spin?

Always a fan boy moment seeing Akhtar Yusuf and mahmood play.

But the Pathan Brothers stole the show.

Was a good match amongst oldies.

Let’s see what the rest of the tournament brings.

Irfan Pathan happy with wickets of Prof and MoYo!

We need a player like Pathan these days, can bowl handy off spin and bat at no. 6 also a good fielder.

two 6s and a 4 by Misbah who also scored the winning runs

Mohammad Hafeez has been one of cricket’s most durable men. The Pakistan all-rounder was 41 when he announced his retirement from the international game early this month.

His last match for Pakistan was the T20I was the semifinal against Australia in the World Cup at Dubai last November. He soon found himself playing in a tournament for the international cricketers.

Turning out for Asia Lions at the Legends League Cricket, he played a splendid cameo to help his side chase down a daunting target set by World Giants at the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium here on Friday night. His 13-ball 27 was what the Lions needed after the second-wicket stand of 88 between the Sri Lankan duo of Tillakaratne Dilshan (52, 32b) and Upul Tharanga (63, 43b).

Shortly after his team scored a six-wicket win with four balls to spare, Hafeez said he was happy to be part of the league. “I personally enjoyed the game to play with the (former top) stars of world cricket,” he said.

“Sharing the dressing room with them was really special. (As is) having World Cup winning Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga as a coach. As a child, I grew up watching him.”

He feels the league is a wonderful initiative. “I really want to congratulate the organisers on bringing (all the cricketers) under one roof,” he said. “As a fan I am very happy.”

Kevin O’Brien could not have been as happy, though. The Irish all-rounder’s 95 off 46 balls went in vain, as the Giants’ 205 for seven was overtaken by Lions.

“It was a very good wicket and I enjoyed batting out there,” said O’Brien. “The standard of cricket here is good. The batters are batting well and the bowlers are putting in good efforts.”

Former South Africa spinner Imran Tahir turned out be an unlikely match-winner, with the bat, as he guided the World Giants to a three-wicket win against the Indian Maharajas in the ongoing Legends League Cricket (LLC) at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Muscat, Oman. Tahir, who is known for his bowling rather than batting, smoked five sixes and three boundaries on his way to a 19-ball 52 as the World Giants chased down a mammoth target despite a middle-order collapse.

Tahir hit three sixes in the 18th over, which was bowled by Manpreet Goni, before hitting Naman Ojha for two sixes in the final over of the match.

After being put on to bat first, the Indian Maharajas innings got off to the worst possible start, losing the wickets Wasim Jaffer and S Badrinath, as both the batters failed to trouble the scorers.

However, wicketkeeper-batter Naman Ojha led the charge of the Maharajas, scoring 140 off 69 balls, including 15 boundaries and nine sixes.

Ojha and Mohammad Kaif (53) added 187 runs for the third wickets as the side managed to post a total of 209 for three in 20 overs.

In reply, the Giants got off to a flying start with Kevin Pietersen scoring a fine fifty at the top of the order.

However, Pietersen's wicket in the 9th over saw a change in momentum as the Maharajas took wickets in regular intervals, reducing the Giants to 101 for five.

But Tahir turned the tables with his knock of 52 as the Giants chased down the target with three wickets and as many balls to spare.

Misbahs team gets their 2nd win.

Its great listening to a pakistani captain who can actually communicate in English and give some proper answers to questions

It's strange watching Shoaib run in and bowl at 110 km/hr, he should not be playing

This is such a strange concept given than many of the players are still active whereas others are long retired.

Its interesting watching a few overs on youtube but I don't think I could watch a full game.

How the hell do these leagues make money?

I highly doubt if the league would make any profit in year 1.

Its a great concept though. Akhtar & Lee would have been a sight to watch 8-9 years ago.

Ravi Shastri is the league commissioner and Wasim Akram the only apex council member, according to the league's website.

Shaz and Waz getting together lol.. Who here remembers that cringeworthy show where they invited blonde girls to swoon over.

The organisers of Legends League Cricket on Friday confirmed that West Indies opening batter Chris Gayle will be playing in the upcoming second edition of Legends League Cricket. Gayle owns almost every record there is, including that of the most runs (now 10,000+), most hundreds, fastest hundred, and most fours and sixes in the shortest format of the game.

The left-handed batter has racked up 15 Test hundreds and over 7,000 runs across 103 matches and frequently turns up for many T20 franchises in jerseys numbered 333-his highest first-Class score, which he made against Sri Lanka at Galle, to become only the fourth batsman after Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag with two Test triples in a lifetime.

"It gives me immense pleasure and excitement to be part of this prestigious league and to play with the iconic legends of the game. India, see you at the venues," said Gayle in an official statement.

Earlier it was confirmed that the tournament will be played across six cities in India. Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi, Jodhpur, Cuttack, and Rajkot will be hosting the matches and the dates planned for the tournament are from September 17-October 8, 2022.

The first season of the league was played in January this year in Muscat between three teams - India Maharajas, World Giants, and Asia Lions - and comprised seven games.

In Season 2 the format will have four franchise-owned teams. There will be 15 matches in the league's season 2 and they will be played in these six cities.

Earlier, Sourav Ganguly, the former India skipper and current president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be playing a special cricket match in Legends League Cricket. Ganguly made the announcement on Instagram, confirming that he would indeed be playing a very special match in the Season 2 of Legends League Cricket.

New Delhi: The second edition of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) is set to be played in six Indian cities, with players from many countries participating in the tournament.

The first season of the league was played in January this year in Muscat, Oman between three teams - India Maharajas, World Giants and Asia Lions - and comprised seven games. However, season 2 will have four franchise owned teams. There will be 15 matches, which will be played in six cities -- Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi, Jodhpur, Cuttack and Rajkot from September 17 to October 8.

Former Indian captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has also confirmed that he would be participating in a very special match of the LLC.

"Enjoying the training to get ready to play for one off charity fundraising game for azadi ka mahotsav..75 years of Indian independence and also for women empowerment with the top legends of the legends league cricket @llct20 need to hit some cricket balls soon," wrote Ganguly on Instagram.

However, the major concern before the organisers is visa availability for former Pakistan cricketers, who are also set to take part in the tournament. Questions are emerging that has the BCCI or the Government of India altered its stance vis-a-vis its cricketing ties with Pakistan.

Notably, India and Pakistan haven't played a bilateral series for nearly a decade now and they only face each other in Asia Cup and ICC events due to political tensions between the two countries. The Indian Premier League (IPL) also doesn't allow Pakistan players to take part except in the first season of the league in 2008.

Asked about the situation, few BCCI officials aren't much aware about the visa issue.

"I can't say much. If Pakistani cricketers get a visa from our government, then they will play if not then no. We (BCCI) have no role in the tournament or visa things," the official told IANS.

Another official questioned, "how can Pakistan's players be allowed to play on Indian soil when we have no cricketing ties with Pakistan. I am sure they will not get a visa."

The LLC season 2 has a long list of former cricketers from Pakistan including Shoaib Akhtar, Misbah-ul Haq, Shahid Afridi and many others comprising the Asia and World XI teams. So, it will be interesting to see the Indian government's stance on giving visas to Pakistani players, especially when the nation doesn't have bilateral cricketing ties with the neighbouring country.

It is also noticeable that all Pakistan cricketers, both former and current, many of whom are playing in the League are strong advocates and promoters of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL).

The Government of India and BCCI have strongly objected and condemned the organising of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) and have banned all cricketers playing in KPL from playing any form of cricket in India.

The league phase of Legends League will start from September 17 and will feature four teams in Gujarat Giants, India Capitals, Manipal Tigers and Bhilwara Kings.

Around 90 cricketing greats will take part in 16 matches across 6 venues.

Speaking about LLC and his role in the tournament, Ravi Shastri said, "It's a fabulous opportunity. It's a new string to the bow. Sometimes, it can just be the motivator that is needed to keep yourself fit and engage in something different. I am always ready and willing to work for the benefit of the sport and to promote the sport in different parts of the globe."

He added: "Basically, my job in this league is to ensure that the cricketing part of it is run properly. There is a sense of pride in what you do. The work ethic has to be solid. There is an integrity quotient attached to it. Hence, you have the Anti-Corruption Units. These are not exhibition games. It's the proper stuff under proper guidelines and every aspect is being looked at like the way you would play an international game. When that happens, players start taking it seriously. They know they are not out here for a holiday. They realise that there are people watching them across the globe, it's important for them to enjoy the league and express themselves."

Should we allow so many T-20 leagues in our country when we already have the PSL? I believe these things will hurt the PSL. The PCB should strictly state that apart from the PSL and the women's T-20 league, no other T-20 league will be allowed in the country.

LLC Masters, World Giants stop India Maharajas by two
Doha, Qatar

World Giants pulled off a thrilling two-run win over India Maharajas in the second match of the LLC Masters at the Asia Town Cricket Stadium in Doha. The edge-of-the-seat thriller followed after World Giants had posted 166 for 8 in 20 overs riding on skipper Aaron Finch’s 53 off 31 balls with seven boundaries and three sixes and Shane Watson’s 55 runs off 32 balls with five boundaries and three sixes.

A captain’s knock of 68 from Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh’s four-wicket spell for 13 runs for Indian Maharajas, unfortunately, went in vain. It was Gambhir’s second consecutive half-century after his 54 against Asia Lions in the opener and his 68 in this match came off 42 balls with nine boundaries and one six. With eight runs needed off the last over, Brett Lee gave away just five runs to give the defending champions World Giants a winning start.

Earlier, World Giants won the toss and elected to bat. ‘The Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle, who opened with his skipper Aaron Finch, smashed the second delivery from Irfan Pathan to the extra cover boundary. Pathan kept Gayle quiet with the rest of his deliveries. Harbhajan Singh, who bowled the third over struck with his first delivery clean bowling Gayle with a beauty that spun in to hit the leg stump. Gayle trying to play a paddle shot, missed the turn and fell for 4. Shane Watson greeted Harbhajan with two consecutive boundaries – the first an elegant sweep to fine leg and another a pull to backward square leg.
World Giants went past the 100-run mark through a classy square-driven boundary from Watson off Irfan Pathan in the 10th over. Tambe bowled a brilliant 11th over giving away just five runs. Watson raced to his half-century hitting Pathan for two sixes in the 12th over. Tambe removed Watson too by having him caught at long-on by Murali Vijay.

Jacques Kallis got out, caught by the agile Mohammad Kaif at mid-wicket off Pathan for 8. Ross Taylor, who had played some lovely knocks in the second edition of this league, and Kevin O’Brien pushed the score to 135 for 4 in 15 overs when Kaif produced another flying catch, diving forward to get Kevin O’Brien out for 4 off Harbhajan Singh. Two balls later, Harbhajan trapped Ross Taylor for 1. One ball after, Harbhajan also had Morne van Wyk sweep and edge his pad to get caught by wicketkeeper Uthappa for 1. Tino Best and Chris Mpofu picked 18 runs off Yusuf Pathan. who bowled the 19th over and World Giants ended up at 166 for 8 in 20 overs.

Chasing a run rate of 8.30, Robin Uthappa opened with his skipper Gautam Gambhir. Brett Lee bowled a tight first over giving away just four runs. The 50-run partnership came in 5.2 overs. Gambhir was severe on Chris Mpofu and hit him for a six over the covers and also scored three boundaries to pick 20 runs off the over.
In the last over, India Maharajas needed eight runs off six balls. Stuart Binny pulled Lee to Powell for 2 to make it seven runs off three balls. With five runs needed off the last ball, Pathan could get only two runs. Lee gave just five runs in the last over to seal his team’s victory.

Misbah taking Harbhajan to cleaners and then getting out to a scoop. That was some nostalgia.

Shocking pitch today. The World Eleven scored 40 runs in 4 overs chasing 100 runs in 10 overs. However for the next 6 overs, they could not deal with the massive rank turn, spin on the pitch and could only score 14 runs in the next 6 overs.
