Williamson leads first West Indies trip in eight years

Kane Williamson will return to lead a 15-player squad on the BLACKCAPS’ first trip to the Caribbean since 2014.

Williamson will captain a squad with an experienced core, including Trent Boult and Tim Southee, combined with a group of newer players such as Finn Allen and Michael Bracewell, who receive further opportunities on the back of strong recent form.

With a tight tour schedule featuring six matches in 11 days across Jamaica (three T20Is) and Barbados (three ODIs) the selectors have looked to balance a combined squad across both formats.

The tour is also a vital part of the next cycle of ICC white ball tournaments, with the ICC T20 World Cup starting in Australia this October, and qualification points on the line for next year’s ODI World Cup in India.

BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead said the squad was looking forward to taking on the West Indies at home.

“It’s always exciting to be heading somewhere you’ve not been in a while and I know this group can’t wait for the challenge of taking on the West Indies in the Caribbean.

“Managing workloads is hugely important this year with the team playing some form of cricket every month in 2022 – and this applies to both players and staff.

“For Kane, Trent, Tim and Devon, this will be the first time they have played white ball cricket for New Zealand since last year’s T20 World Cup and tour to India - so this trip will be important for them.

“We also have players such as Michael and Finn who are relatively new to the international stage but have really put their hands up for selection when given opportunities.

“As a selector it’s been great to see these guys push their cases.”

Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Senior Selection Panel today named 16 players for the upcoming Goldmedal T20I Cup, powered by Kent Water Purifiers against India and for the three-match T20 International (T20I) Series against New Zealand.

The West Indies and India Men’s teams will go head-to-head in the five-match series, starting Friday 29 July, with the first-ever West Indies Senior Men’s team match to be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. The five-match series runs until Sunday 7 August with games being played in Trinidad, St Kitts and Florida.

The same pool of 16 players will then travel to Jamaica for the three-match T20I Series against New Zealand at Sabina Park that starts from Wednesday 10 August to Sunday 14 August.

An official squad of 13 players will be nominated ahead of each match.

The Selection Panel recalled left-handed batter Shimron Hetmyer. Left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell is recovering from injury and unavailable for selection, while allrounder Fabien Allen is also unavailable for personal reasons.

Lead Selector, The Most Hon Dr Desmond Haynes said: “We welcome back Hetmyer and it is good to see him again in West Indies colours. He will fortify the batting group and with his experience and adaptability we have a ‘finisher’ who can add value and win matches for the team and delight the supporters.”

Haynes added: “Everything we do, we have to take into consideration we have a big tournament coming up later this year, which is the ICC T20 World Cup, so we are planning and gearing up towards that event. It is good to give the players some exposure to the international stage and look to find the right combinations.”

Fans can book their mounds or seated tickets online and in advance at tickets.windiestickets.com or via www.windiescricket.com/tickets without having to travel or queue to print out at home or download to their device. Box offices are also open at the Brian Lara Academy, Trinidad with box offices to open from the 29 July at Warner Park, St Kitts and then from the 3 August in Lauderhill, Florida.

This should be a very interesting tour. These two don't play often yet whenever they do it brings interesting and entertaining Cricket. Even during West Indies glory days the New Zealanders then lead by the great Richard Hadlee always gave them a tough time. With Martin, Kane, Trent and Tim I am making New Zealand the slight favourites for this series.

The Sabina Park will host its first T20I in over five years when West Indies take on New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series. West Indies would be desperate to find answers to the oodles of question marks they are faced with in what will be their last T20I series before they announce their squad for the World Cup. That, for which, they will need to qualify, placed in Group B for the first round alongside Ireland, Zimbabwe and Scotland.

The hosts would've been disappointed with their faring in the recently-concluded T20I series to India slipping to a 1-4 loss in their favoured format. The series followed a familiar script of inconsistency and batting collapses for the West Indies; in addition, a number of vital personnel missing from their ranks only hurt them further. With no clarity in Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine's availability for the T20 World Cup, and Evin Lewis, Fabian Allen and Sheldon Cottrell unavailable for various reasons, it leaves West Indies with an arduous task to figure out not just their best squad, but more so the best XI.

New Zealand, meanwhile, have named a full-strength squad for the series. While the ones that filled in for the Europe tour in the absence of their mainstay players were impressive, the addition of experience of Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Devon Conway only strengthens their squad. They have momentum on their side, going unbeaten across 4 ODIs and 7 T20Is against Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.

Daryl Mitchell was particularly splendid, continuing to showcase his versatality across formats and pressure situations. He finished as the highest run-getter in the T20Is against the three teams in Europe with 187 runs with a strike-rate nearing 150. Michael Bracewell enhanced his reputation of being an allrounder, as he picked a hat-trick as well as made vital contributions with the bat, staking a claim for a World Cup spot.

Their depth in batting shone through as they piled on the runs, while the bowling attack was more than potent. Ish Sodhi played a crucial role, featuring in all the T20Is on the Europe tour and finished as New Zealand's best bowler with 13 wickets at 14.15. With the three T20Is set to be played in Kingston, where the wickets favour the spinners, Sodhi will once again be pivotal.

When: West Indies vs New Zealand, 1st T20I, Aug 10, 01:30 PM local; 12 AM IST

Where: Sabina Park, Jamaica

What to expect: Temperature hovering around 30-32 degrees with bright sunshine is forecast for the game. The Sabina Park surface has seen a bit of slowing down in the recent past, with tricky phases for the batsmen. The spinners are expected to do well largely at the venue with visible turn available. Slower deliveries from the pacers can bring them rewards. Across the 3 T20Is at the venue, the average first innings score has been 134.

Team News

West Indies

Brandon King and Kye Mayers were left out of the last T20I against India, due to niggles, in what was a precautionary call. Evin Lewis continues to miss out of the squad after failing to clear a fitness test that was set up after the IPL. Akeal Hosein and Hayden Walsh Jr should be in the XI, given that they're the frontline spin options. West Indies continue to miss the services of allrounder Fabian Allen, who pulled out for personal reasons.

Squad: Rovman Powell, Shamarh Brooks, Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer, Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran (c/wk), Devon Thomas (wk), Dominic Drakes, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Obed McCoy, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Hayden Walsh Jr.

New Zealand

The challenge New Zealand will face is integrating the incoming experienced players with the ones that have had a successful European tour to find the right balance. Conway, Latham and Henry return after being rested for the second half of the European tour. Adam Milne, ruled out of the Europe tour with an Achilles injury, has not been named in the squad.

Squad: Kane Williamson (c), Martin Guptill, James Neesham, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee

What they said:

"I think the three matches will be important for a lot of players as well as some players who will be rested. But, in general, after that we will have to make a decision." - Phil Simmons

NZ 62/2 (7.4) CRR: 8.09

Whilst this may not look like a huge score in the making, WI's current mental state means that it will prove to be too big a challenge

Neesham fast becoming one of the best finishers in the game.

Nice little games for NZ to rebuild some confidence after the recent hammerings, ah if only being nice was enough. But they should be more happy and comfortable with this level.

Williamson returns as world-class catches highlights Caribbean T20I

Kane Williamson made a triumphant return to the T20I arena as New Zealand clinched a narrow victory over West Indies in an entertaining clash in the Caribbean.

World-class fielding on display in Kingston

Some of the catching from both sides had to be seen to be believed during the first T20I in Kingston and it was difficult to choose which catch on the day was best of all.

Shimron Hetmyer got the ball rolling with an athletic effort to snaffle New Zealand veteran Martin Guptill for 16, while Devon Thomas and James Neesham also hauled in superb grabs that would have claimed 'catch of the day' honours for most T20I matches.

But it was this effort from Hayden Walsh that caught the eye most, with the West Indies spinner showing why he's considered one of the best fielders in the world as he sprinted along the boundary and dived at full stretch to help dismiss New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson.

Welcome back skipper

This calendar year has been a frustrating one for Kane Williamson as he has battled ongoing injuries, so it was great to see the New Zealand captain back playing what was his first T20I since last year's T20 World Cup decider against Australia in Dubai.

Williamson looked to be in good touch with the willow too as he smashed a quickfire 47 from just 33 deliveries in a knock that featured a quartet of fours and two massive sixes.

The New Zealand skipper was eventually out in the 18th over courtesy of Walsh’s athletic catch, but not before he had helped his side on their way to post a big score against the dangerous West Indies.

Steady Boult overshadowed by star all-rounder

Experienced quick Trent Boult made headlines on the eve of the match when he announced he was turning his back on his central contract with New Zealand Cricket, but he still turned out against the West Indies and picked up the valuable wicket of Jason Holder.

It was Mitchell Santner that stole the show for the visitors, with the star collecting three crucial scalps and conceding just 19 runs from his four overs on his way to claiming Player of the Match honours.

Santner's spell could have been the difference between two sides in the end, with West Indies' tail wagging as Romario Shepherd (31*) and Odean Smith (27*) gave the hosts some late hope with some powerful hitting that eventually proved in vain.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Cricket West Indies Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced the squad for the CG United One-Day International Series against New Zealand. All three matches will be day/night matches played under floodlights at Kensington Oval in Barbados on 17, 19 and 21 August.

The three matches are West Indies’ last remaining three fixtures in the ICC ODI Super League as West Indies aim to automatically qualify for the 2023 ICC World Cup in India. West Indies will be seeking to win the CG United ODI Series to secure one of the automatic qualification places reserved for the top 7 teams in the ODI Super League table, excluding hosts India.

CWI’s Selection Panel named one newcomer to the squad in off-spinner Kevin Sinclair. He made his international debut in T20I cricket last year against Sri Lanka and has so far played six T20Is. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie has been named in the 14-member squad and will have to undergo a fitness assessment on the finger injury sustained against India in the CG United ODI Series in Trinidad last month.

Allrounder Roston Chase is unavailable for selection due to injury while fellow allrounder Fabien Allen is also unavailable for personal reasons.

Lead Selector, The Most Hon Dr Desmond Haynes said:

“As we stated before, we are looking to broaden the pool of players and we have decided to give Sinclair an opportunity in the CG United ODI Series against New Zealand. He has been in the system for a while and was also in the ‘A Team’ to play against Bangladesh ‘A’ in the upcoming series. We believe with his calm approach and skills he will do well in the matches against New Zealand.”
Haynes added: “New Zealand is a very good cricketing nation, and this will be a very competitive series. We have the confidence in the players selected that they will do very well. This is the last series of the international season at home, and it would be good to end with some solid performances as we continue to build towards the ICC World Cup in India next year.”

Additionally, fans can also purchase tickets from box offices at Kensington Oval leading up to each match day. For all matches, adults can purchase half price tickets for children under the age of 16 and seniors can also benefit from half price tickets too.

Fans in the West Indies can watch the CG United ODI Series exclusively live on ESPN Caribbean or listen to live radio commentary on the West Indies YouTube channel . Fans in New Zealand can watch exclusively live on Sky Sport.

The first T20I between West Indies and New Zealand on Wednesday saw some exceptional fielding by the West Indies players at the Sabina Park in Jamaica. Shimron Hetmyer set the tone with a one-handed screamer to dismiss New Zealand Martin Guptill and what followed was another brilliant catch from his teammate Hayden Walsh Junior. The latter took a sensational catch on square leg to cut short Kane Williamson's stint at the crease. Odean Smith bowled a short ball to Williamson and the latter, who was batting on 47 off 32 balls, pulled it towards square leg searching a boundary but Hayden Walsh's stunner deprived him of a half-century.

West Indies vs New Zealand, 2nd T20I

New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to bat

Teams:

West Indies (Playing XI): Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Nicholas Pooran(c), Devon Thomas(w), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Hayden Walsh, Obed McCoy

New Zealand (Playing XI): Martin Guptill, Devon Conway(w), Kane Williamson(c), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Trent Boult

Pitch report: The same pitch that was used in the first T20I. It has an even covering of grass, it's compact and hard. There will be good pace and bounce, the batters will be able to hit through the line. Batsmen can score runs if they apply themselves well, reckons Samuel Badree.

Nicholas Pooran: We are playing with the same team. King is unfit. We have 15-16 players in the squad, it's important to rest these guys. We are backing each and everyone with the World Cup around the corner. We need to start well and finish off the innings well. I am happy with the guys, we have a really long batting line up. The guys are getting better with each and every game.

Kane Williamson: We are going to have a bat, same surface like the other day. Bracewell comes in for Ferguson. The game is always moving forward. We need to put up our best performance. We are just trying to keep working hard. As a side we just need to keep getting better. Last game was a close one.

Team changes: Michael Bracewell comes in for Lockie Ferguson. West Indies - unchanged..

Wellington Firebirds pace-bowler Ben Sears could be in line to make his ODI debut after being called up to the West Indies tour to replace Matt Henry, who’s been ruled out with a rib injury.

Henry first experienced pain in his left side during training last week and with the injury failing to improve, the decision was made to replace him in the squad.

Coach Gary Stead said the move was precautionary and about ensuring Henry didn’t aggravate the injury further.

“It’s a shame for Matt to have to return home at this point of the tour,” Stead said.

“Although the injury is not overly serious - we felt there was a significant risk it would become worse through playing.

“With the upcoming ODI series starting on Wednesday and consisting of three games over five days, we saw it as prudent to bring in a fully fit replacement.

“Ben comes fresh from a successful tour with the BLACKCAPS in Europe and while he is yet to play ODI cricket - we believe he’s ready if called upon.

“At 24-years-old he’s an exciting young prospect and we like the pace and skills he possesses.

“Matt is on his way home as we speak and will begin his rehabilitation immediately with an eye to being ready for the ODI series in Australia in early September.”

Sears arrives in Jamaica on Sunday local time and will fly with the squad to Barbados on Monday.

The BLACKCAPS depart for the three-game Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series in Australia on September 2.

Rovman Powell: Playing for WI is always a dream, imagine captaining in your home ground, that's a childhood dream. Four changes for us. It's difficult but the boys are upbeat. NZ batted well last game, we served some bad balls. Always tough to chase 200. Hopefully the guys can rectify things today.

Kane Williamson: We are gonna have a bat. It's the same surface, the conditions are pretty much the same, we want to make the first use of it. We want to keep improving and adjusting. One change. Lockie Ferguson comes back in for Boult.

Teams:

West Indies denied New Zealand the chance to seal a series sweep by defeating the visitors by eight wickets in Kingston on Sunday.

Kiwi batters fail to fire

The New Zealand top-order all reached double figures during their respective innings, but only one batter scored more than 24 as the hosts' bowlers put the clamps on the visitors.

Glenn Phillips looked the best of the New Zealand batters, with the Kiwi No.5 smashing 41 from just 26 deliveries to help the visitors post a below-par score of 145/7 from their allotted 20 overs.

After scores of 185/5 in the first match of the series and 215/5 in the second, Kane Williamson's side would have been disappointed with their efforts after they won the toss and elected to bat first.

West Indies' top-order fit for a King

The Caribbean side shuffled the deck chairs at selection with four changes to their XI and the decision to rest skipper Nicholas Pooran paid off as the West Indies' top-order looked composed in chasing down New Zealand's score with ease.

Right-hander Brandon King (53) got the hosts off to a flyer on his return from injury, while fellow opener Shamarh Brooks (56*) played a more cautious role as the hosts put on 102 for the opening wicket to leave New Zealand requiring a miracle.

That never eventuated as Rovman Powell (27*) came in to guide the run chase home, with the stand-in West Indies captain smashing Jimmy Neesham for six on the final delivery of the penultimate over to seal the contest.

West Indies find winning formula

The decision by the West Indies to play two spinners proved pivotal in the result, with Akeal Hosein (2/18) and Hayden Walsh (1/16) proving difficult to dispatch and pacer Odean Smith (3/29) reaping the rewards with career best figures.

King, who won the Player of the Match award for his impressive half-century, said the bowlers deserved much of the praise for the victory.

"Today credit has to be given to the bowlers," he said after the match.

"They did an excellent job for us and made my job that much easier."

Williamson said his side was outplayed on the day, with New Zealand now turning their attention to the three-match ODI series that commences on Wednesday.

"The West Indies adapted to the conditions nicely," Williamson said.

"We knew that with 140 things would have to go well for us with the ball and they outplayed us today."

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced changes to the West Indies squad for the three-match CG United One-Day International (ODI) Series against New Zealand which starts tomorrow on Wednesday 17 August. All three ODIs will be day/night matches played under floodlights at Kensington Oval with the 2nd and 3rd CG United ODIs on 19 and 21 August.

From the original squad, left-handed batter Shimron Hetmyer is unavailable due to personal reasons; allrounder Keemo Paul is ruled out with an injury and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie has failed to recover from the hand injury sustained during the CG United Series against India last month.

The replacements are middle-order batter Jermaine Blackwood and leg-spinning allrounder Yannic Cariah. Blackwood is called up for the ODI squad for the first time since 2015. Cariah earns his first squad call-up for the West Indies after being promoted from the West Indies A squad that has been playing against Bangladesh. Cariah captained the West Indies Emerging Players team that won the CG United Super50 Cup (then the Colonial Insurance Super50 Cup) in 2019. Odean Smith, the seam-bowling allrounder, has been added as a reserve.

CWI’s Lead Selector, The Most Hon Dr. Desmond Haynes, said: “Hetmyer has to attend to a family matter in Guyana. Unfortunately, Motie is not yet able to rejoin the squad and Keemo is struggling with an injury. However, it provides an opportunity for Yannic Cariah to get a chance. He is someone that has been performing well on the regional circuit and we feel now is the right time to integrate him into the senior team set-up. Odean Smith has been added on the back of some notable performances in the T20I Series. He has displayed the all-round ability to change games and we look forward to his continued development.”

Shamarh Brooks played the sheet anchor role to perfection in guiding the West Indies to a five-wicket victory over top-ranked New Zealand in a low-scoring opening day-night One-Day International of a three-match series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday.

After the home side's bowling combination pace and spin dismissed the visitors for 190 off 45.2 overs batting first, Brooks' 91-ball 79 with nine fours and one six provided the much-needed solidity to take his team to 193 for five off 39 overs in reply.

His 72-run fourth-wicket partnership with captain Nicholas Pooran (28) steadied the chase and ensured there would be no repeat of the collapses which have become an all-too-common feature of their game in recent years.

Nicholas Pooran | West Indies captain: We looked at the surface and it seemed dry. Against Australia last time, it played similar. We felt like three spinners would be a good idea. Was about taking a risk and it worked out for us. These guys taking their opportunities in their first game was really good to see. We've been looking for leg spinners and it was nice to see him (Cariah) do well. We knew it was going to be tricky for sure. Brooks batted well and we knew that we were only one partnership away. It gets better here at night once you get set. Glad that we could break the losing streak today and get some points.

Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain: I thought we couldn't get any rhythm to our batting, so credit to the West Indies bowlers. I thought they put on a complete performance. I thought at the halfway stage that it could have been competitive. West Indies batted well and we couldn't extract enough either. Guys were trying hard (with the ball) but it didn't quite go our way today. Was nice for the guys to get some overs in the belt. Hopefully we can execute better in the next game.

Shamarh Brooks | Player of the Match: Watching the Kiwis bat, I realised that it was very tough batting early on. Idea was to just get some partnerships and chase the total off. Wasn't an easy track to start on but the longer you spent out there, easier it got. It's a big thing (to beat NZ) and there has been a definite improvement in our performances. Just want our guys to grow from strength to strength. Just told him (Pooran) that we've never had a partnership together in this format.

It was a great win for Windies. They broke a 9-match ODI losing streak.

Surprised to see Kiwis struggling against Windies.

Kiwis are #1 in ODI ranking and Windies are #9.

NZ - 30/1 (7.4 overs).

Tim Southee and Trent Boult combined to demolish the West Indies top-order batting as New Zealand scored a series-levelling victory in the second One-Day International of a three-match series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Friday. After Finn Allen's 96 anchored the Black Caps to 212 off 48.2 overs batting first on another challenging pitch, Southee and Bolt claimed three wickets apiece as the home side limped to 63 for seven off 22.4 overs when a second heavy shower resulted in a prolonged delay to the day/night fixture.

Set a revised target of 212 off 41 overs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern scoring method, Yannic Cariah's 52 in his debut ODI innings and a swashbuckling 49 off 31 balls by Alzarri Joseph gave the tourists a fright in a frenetic 85-run ninth-wicket partnership.

However Southee was summoned by stand-in captain Tom Latham and he responded immediately by bowling Joseph while Allen completed an excellent boundary catch to end Cariah's effort as the West Indies were eventually dismissed for 161 off 35.3 overs to lose by 50 runs and set the stage for the series decider on Sunday.

Southee's final figures were four for 19 while Boult's six-over spell at the start of the innings earned him three for 18.

Earlier, opening batsman Allen's effort off 117 balls with seven fours and three sixes was one of just four double-figure innings as the Black Caps, beaten in the first match by five wickets at the same venue two days earlier, were again found wanting against the home side's combination of spin and pace.

"I've always known I've got the grit in me but I never showed it. Showing now that I can do it is good," said Allen on receiving the 'Man of the Match' award.

"The wickets haven't been batting-friendly but I have enjoyed the challenge."

In just his second ODI, off-spinner Kevin Sinclair claimed four for 41, including the last three wickets, terminating a last-wicket stand of 31 between Mitchell Santner and Boult with a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Boult.

Former captain Jason Holder set the tone for the innings with an excellent opening spell, the fast-medium bowler snaring two early wickets and then returning to end Allen's quest for the hundred in finishing with three for 24 off nine overs.

"It's disappointing to lose so many wickets in the powerplay," said West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran in reflecting on the opening period of his team's reply when they slumped to 27 for six.

"Just one good partnership in the top order might have been enough to see us home."

Brilliant from New Zealand. I thought Windies would win it because target wasn't very high.

Series is nicely tied at 1-1.

West Indies vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI

New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to field

Nicholas Pooran - Looks like a good wicket to bat first. It's an important game for us, we'll have to bat well and post a good score on the board. Hopefully, we'll bat well and put them under scoreboard pressure. No changes for us.

Tom Latham - We will bowl. Fresh wicket, a bit of weather about, hopefully we can land the ball in the right areas and make the most of the new ball. It's about trying to build partnerships, it's tricky to start, so when you get a start, it's important to make the most of it, like Finn Allen showed the other day. We're just looking to put up a performance, try and improve game-by-game. Trent Boult is fit, but Kane hasn't pulled up as we liked. Ferguson replaces Glenn Phillips.

New Zealand have strengthened their bowling with Lockie Ferguson replacing Glenn Phillips, Kane Williamson remians unfit. No changes for West Indies

Bordering on ridiculous now!

West Indies have picked up the pace. Going along nicely now.

WI - 65/0 (16.4 overs).

A bit slow from West Indies but openers have set a good platform.

WI - 148/0 (30.4 overs).

Shai Hope 51 off 100 is a terrible innings. Can't even blame the pitch when your partner at the other end scores a run a ball century.

Stand-in captain Tom Latham top-scored with 69 to lead New Zealand to a series-clinching five-wicket victory over the West Indies in the third and final one-day international series in Barbados on Sunday. Kyle Mayers' second one-day century and a blistering 91 by captain Nicholas Pooran took the hosts to 301 for eight in their 50 overs. But the Black Caps made light of an imposing target as four of the first five in their batting order scored half-centuries to reach 307 for five off 47.1 overs and underline their status as the top-ranked nation in the 50-over format.

New Zealand's come-from-behind 2-1 win over the three matches was their first ODI series success in the Caribbean. It followed their 2-1 Twenty20 series triumph the previous week in Jamaica.

In the absence of injured regular captain Kane Williamson, Latham led the New Zealand effort and enjoyed a 120-run fourth-wicket partnership with Daryl Mitchell, who made 63, which tilted the contest in favour of the touring side.

"It's nice to come here, where other teams have struggled in the past, and get the series win," said player-of-the match Latham.

"It was a better wicket today and we knew the target. I am just happy to be able to make a contribution."

Opener Martin Guptill with 57 and Devon Conway, who plundered 56, also played key roles in the chase.

The West Indies cause was not helped by heavy dew on the outfield after dusk which required the ball to be changed four times during New Zealand's innings and made it difficult for the home bowlers.

For the West Indies, Mayers' 105 off 110 balls with 12 fours and three sixes dominated an opening stand of 173 with Shai Hope, who made 51.

But it was Pooran's explosive 55-ball contribution, with nine sixes and four fours, that enabled the hosts to get beyond the 300-run mark.

"We missed our chance to take the series in that second game and paid the price here," said a downbeat Pooran.

"We have a special bunch of guys here and I believe we will get better."

New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner, who was named player of the series, claimed two for 38 in a containing 10-over spell while left-arm swing bowler Trent Boult was the leading wicket-taker with three for 53.

Jason Holder was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with two for 37 in seven overs.

WEST INDIES FINED FOR SLOW OVER-RATE IN 3RD ODI AGAINST NEW ZEALAND

West Indies have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the third and final ODI in Barbados on Sunday.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Nicholas Pooran’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.12.2 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Playing Conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over short. Consequently, West Indies will lose two points from their points tally during the Super League.

Pooran pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid leveled the charge.

After defeat to New Zealand to end their Cricket World Cup Super League campaign, West Indies' hopes of automatic qualification for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 took another blow after they were punished for a slow over rate.

Nicholas Pooran's side were docked two Super League points for falling two overs short of completing their overs in the allotted time, imposed by match referee Richie Richardson even after allowances for the slow rate were considered.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid levelled the charge after the hosts' five-wicket defeat, with Pooran pleading guilty to the offence.

It means the West Indies drop to 88 points, a total unlikely to result in a top eight position at the end of the Super League cycle, and a ticket straight to India.

Ireland (9th on 68 points) have a superior net run rate to the West Indies, and with wins worth ten points, two victories at home to Bangladesh in their series next year would likely result in a higher finish. Waiting to strike, Sri Lanka (10th on 62 points) and South Africa (11th on 49 points) both have multiple series left in the cycle.

A finish outside the top eight would mean West Indies' path to India 2023 would be via the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe next year.

The bottom five teams of Super League move to the Qualifier, and are joined by the top three finishers of Cricket World Cup League 2, and the top two finishers of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off.

How the Super League fits into India 2023 qualification
The next Super League action takes place in Australia, with Aaron Finch's side hosting Zimbabwe in Townsville from 28 August to 3 September.
