Man held after several people injured in Southport stabbing

Armed police have arrested a man with a knife after a stabbing involving multiple reported casualties in Southport.

Merseyside police said it was responding to a “major incident” at a property in the seaside town.

A force spokesperson said there were “a number of reported casualties” and more details would be confirmed when possible.

The force was called to reports of a stabbing on Hart Street in Southport at around 11.50am where armed police detained a male and seized a knife.

The male has been taken to a police station and there there was no wider threat to the public, the force said.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said its paramedics were responding to reports of “multiple stabbings” in Southport.

An NWAS statement on social media said: “We’re attending a major incident on Hart Street, Southport following reports of multiple stabbings in which we have dispatched multiple resources.

“We’re assessing the situation and working with emergency partners.”

Unfortunately the more these incidents get highlighted, the more we are witnessing them. Needed strong actions against the culprits.

Keir Starmer said this incident was “horrendous and deeply shocking”

“My thoughts are with all those affected. I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response. I am being kept updated as the situation develops,” he added on X.

Horrendous and deeply shocking news emerging from Southport. My thoughts are with all those affected.

I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response.

I am being kept updated as the situation develops.

Knife crime incidents have become increasingly common across England and Wales in recent years. According to the Home Office, in the 12 months to December 2023, some 14,577 offences were recorded.

Prior to winning the general elections in July, Starmer had vowed to tackle knife crime in the UK, and said it would be “an absolute priority”.

At the King’s Speech in July, Starmer’s government introduced a new crime bill for the country that also seeks to crack down on the sale of ninja and samurai swords, in an effort to tackle knife crime.

Man detained after eight people stabbed in UK’s Southport

Police officials have arrested the suspect and seized his knife, after the stabbing incident in Southport, England.

British emergency services have arrested a man after at least eight people suffered stab injuries in Southport, northwest England, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling the incident “deeply shocking”.

Police officials said on Monday that armed officers had detained a male and seized a knife after being called to a property in Southport, near Liverpool in northwest England, at 11:50am (10:50 GMT).
“There are a number of reported casualties,” the police statement added.

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said it had “treated eight patients with stab injuries who have been taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby hospital.”

The hospital said it had declared a major incident and its emergency department was extremely busy. It also asked parents only to bring their children in if it was urgent.

Meanwhile, police officials have restricted flights to Southport and have cordoned off the location where the incident occurred.

Local business owner Colin Parry, one of the people who called police, told the domestic Press Association news agency that he believed several “young girls” had been stabbed.

“The mothers are coming here now and screaming. It is like a scene from a horror movie,” Parry told the UK PA news agency.

“It’s like something from America, not like sunny Southport,” he added, noting that the police have now caught the suspect.

British PM Starmer, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Mayor of Liverpool Steve Rotheram have all expressed their concern and said that they’re monitoring the situation closely.

Knife attack seems to be a big problem in UK. Hearing news about these knife attacks very frequently.

Hard to ban knife though. It is not like a gun. Knives are readily accessible.

King and Queen 'profoundly shocked' by 'utterly horrific' knife attack

The King has said he and the Queen are "profoundly shocked" by the "utterly horrific" knife attack which killed two children in Southport.

He said: "My wife and I have been profoundly shocked to hear of the utterly horrific incident in Southport today.

"We send our most heartfelt condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have so tragically lost their lives, and to all those affected by this truly appalling attack."

What is the name of the culprit. Why is his religious identity being kept hidden.

Two children dead and nine injured in dance workshop stabbing

Two children have been killed and nine injured, six critically, in a "ferocious" knife attack at a children's dance workshop.

Two adults are also in a critical condition after being stabbed as they tried to protect children at the Taylor Swift-themed event on Hart Street in Southport, Merseyside Police said.

A 17-year-old boy, from Banks in Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Police said the motivation for the attack was "unclear" but it was not being treated as terror-related.

One witness described the scene as "horrendous" and said they had "never seen anything like it".

The King and the prime minister have led tributes to the victims, offering their "heartfelt condolences" to those affected.

Merseyside Police declared a major incident after receiving emergency calls at 11.47 BST, on what was the first full week of the school summer holidays for many children in the UK.

Armed response vehicles, 13 ambulances and the fire service rushed to the dance class, which was being held for children aged six to 10.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told a news conference that officers responding to the calls "were shocked" to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a "ferocious attack" and had suffered serious injuries.

"It is understood that the children were attending a Taylor Swift event at a dance school when the offender armed with a knife walked into the premises and started to attack the children," she said.

"We believe that the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked."

She added: "As a mum of two daughters, and the nana of a five-year-old granddaughter, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering the families of the victims are currently going through and I want to send them our heartfelt condolences and sympathies".

Ms Kennedy said the 17-year-old suspect, who police said was born in Cardiff, will now be questioned by detectives.

Merseyside Police said it was not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack and that the "motivation for the incident remains unclear".

Ms Kennedy added that Counter Terrorism Police North West had offered their support to Merseyside Police but that the incident was not currently being treated as terror-related.

Journalist Tim Johnson, from Eye on Southport, said the attack happened at the Hope of Hart children's club, which is housed in a former warehouse building on a back street.

"It was horrendous. I've never seen anything like it," Mr Johnson said.

"There were so many police cars, it was a mass of blue lights. I saw ambulance men and women in tears. People were in tears in the streets."

Alder Hey Children's Hospital declared a "major incident", while the North West Ambulance Service said it had sent 13 ambulances to the scene.

Dave Kitchin, head of operations at the ambulance service, said they treated 11 casualties at the scene, who were sent by emergency ambulance and heli-med to Alder Hey and Royal Manchester Children’s hospitals, Aintree University Hospital, Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk District General Hospital.

He described the scene that met paramedics as "devastating", adding, "no doubt this incident will have a lasting impact on the whole community, and our thoughts are very much with them at this difficult time".

Great North Air Ambulance Service confirmed its critical care team was also sent to the scene.

A spokesman added: "We delivered advanced emergency care to one patient before accompanying them to hospital by road."

Colin Parry, owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs, which is next door to where the attack happened, said that shortly before it began there was a commotion outside because a young man wearing a green hoodie and a face mask had arrived by taxi but was refusing to pay the driver.

He said an employee called him back out a short time later and that he saw numerous "young kids, all bleeding".

"It's like something from America, not like sunny Southport."

Mr Parry told BBC Radio 5 Live that a builder helped lead some of the children away from the scene of the attack and neighbours helped take "about 10 girls to safety".

"The community was coming together, everyone was trying to help. Everyone was trying to save the young kids," he added.

In a statement on X, The King said he and his wife were "profoundly shocked" to hear of the "utterly horrific incident".

He added: "We send our most heartfelt condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have so tragically lost their lives, and to all those affected by this truly appalling attack."

The Prince and Princess of Wales called the attack "horrid and heinous" adding that they were sending "love, thoughts and prayers to all those involved".

They said on X: "As parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through.

"Thank you also to the emergency responders who, despite being met with the most horrific scenes, demonstrated compassion and professionalism when your community needed you most."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "I know the whole country is deeply shocked about what they’ve seen and what they’ve heard.

"I know I speak for everyone in the whole country in saying, our thoughts and condolences are with the victims, their families, their friends and the wider community and it’s almost impossible to imagine the grief that they’re going through, and the trauma that they’re going through.

"I do want to thank the emergency services and Merseyside Police who have had to respond to the most difficult of circumstances today."

Southport FC, whose ground is only a few streets from the scene of the attack, said it had cancelled a pre-season friendly against Morecambe FC scheduled for Tuesday "out of respect to those who have so tragically lost their lives".

It also said its club lounge would be open between 10:00 and 15:00 BST on Tuesday and specialist support staff available for anyone who wished to "gather, share their thoughts, and find support during this difficult time".

Everton Football Club and Liverpool Football Club also offered their condolences to all those affected.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she was "deeply concerned" about the "very serious incident", while Southport MP Patrick Hurley added that he was "hoping for the best possible outcomes to the casualties affected".

Steve Rotheram, mayor of Liverpool City Region, has urged the public not to spread "unconfirmed speculation and false information".

Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said she was "utterly shocked and devastated" to hear of the "truly appalling" incident.

Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said the council was "deeply shocked and saddened at the tragic events".

“Our thoughts are with all the victims of this attack and their families," she said.

“I’d like to thank all those who responded to the incident and helped in any way they could in what must have been extremely difficult circumstances.

“We know this has caused concern and upset in the local community and while there is no immediate threat to the public we will be providing help and support in the coming days and weeks”.

A fundraiser for the victims and their families has been set up by a group of Taylor Swift fans, named "Swifties for Southport".

Cristina Jones, from the UK and EU Taylor Swift Facebook group told BBC Newsbeat: "The idea that those parents are going through hell right now and the idea they had any financial stress over this breaks our hearts."

"We can't make it better in any way. But taking away some stress was definitely a priority for us", she added.

Don't know if he's right, but Andrew Tate is on social media claiming it's an illegal immigrant. Don't want to share the link.

Not an illegal immigrant. He was born in the UK but is originally from Rwanda. His religious identity is not known (Rwandans are usually Christians) but the fact that he is an immigrant is enough for the mouth breathers.

This is a heinous crime and I hope the murderer is tried as an adult.

Loads of fake news were floating around in SM, till the police issued a bulleting stating this lad was born in Cardiff...

Being born and raised up in the UK makes him an immigrant? Dont think so.....

The attacker is apparently underage (17 years old).
These huckers know what they are doing, so that they can get away with not being tried as adults. Saudi's got the right idea in that sense. Straight to chop chop square.

The news I was hearing from the Tommy Robinson brigade was that he was Syrian. I guess not.

Anyway, if people want underage youths to be tried as adults, then the law as it stands is not worth the paper it's written on. Lower the age of adulthood to 16 or 14, whatever makes people satisfied that the offender actually is an adult.

This is tragic, young kids being killed like this . The suspect is British , born here . His age won’t save him for never being let out of prison ever.

Again this is a death penalty imo but uk doesn’t have this.

The name floated on SM last night translated to "I have to go to my apartment" last night. Some one did put in a lot of effort into thinking that one up.

RIP to the deceased! And I hope the ones injured recover soon.

Sad, sad thing to happen.

The anger is understandable, but doesn't it all come down to perspective?

Why doesn't Tommy Robinson highlight stabbings in London, last years statistics were 12-13,000 stabbings, in a single year?! Many of the dead victims in London are school kids, teenagers etc.. Somehow that can be brushed under the carpet, cause what 'it's fine when the Brits stab each other?' It's all messed up.

It was just misinformation passed around by the far right.

I understand the need for juvenile laws , for small petty crimes at that age shouldnt ruin the entire life of the offenders. But this was not a regular crime. It was violent murder, there should be a provision in the law where such crimes are treated differently from say , getting into fights or shoplifting. This should put him behind bars for the rest of life

Wouldnt bank on that, current govt plans to empty prisions, not fill them more. This lad will be out in a few years

Most likely he/his solicitor will cook up a "mental health" and "diminished capability" story and get him trialled on manslaughter.

I'm not disagreeing, I think a 17 year old is an adult anyway. I think we should redefine what age constitutes as an adult. Personally I feel once you are past the age of 16 there are no excuses.

zero chance of that happening. The government doesnt plan to empty prisons, its just that chronic underinvestment in the prison system has led to a severe shortage of places. The tories ignored governance and spent most of their time fighting culture wars or wasting money on idiotic schemes like Rwanda

They will have to spend more money and that means tax rises or cuts in other areas which is never popular

Publicity is too high . There will be outrage . Sure may be in a mental institution but will do decades in there too. No sentence can be any consolation for the parents .

Yes , you can drive , vote , get child benefits at 17 but will be a jouvanile in prison system until 21? Strange

The govt plan as it stands is to release all non violent ones, however I wont hold my breath that they release violent ones as well. Off topic but both tax rises and cuts are coming.

No sentence will be enough, but a strong deterrent needs to be sent out, to deter others from doing it. This lad is pure evil, even travelled a few miles to get to the venue.

Public's going to forget in a few months, just like the lady who got scot free for killing 2 girls last year in London, came up with some BS on epilipsy. No outrage over it.

Thats just outrage bait circulating on Facebook. they will make non violent offenders eligible for parole early if they have served a significant time in the sentence. All non violent offenders wont be released overnight

Prisons cant be built overnight and overcrowding is a big problem. Britian is a first world country so they cant have their prisons like overcrowded slums so something has to give.

Public services need to be invested in , it takes years. Tories had no interest in doing so because it costs money and now the next government will inherit and try to fix their mess

Completely off thread, here but its more FT and Times articles than FB :D .

For public services to improve there need to be £££, which unfortunately we dont have and publics in no mood of Austerity 2.0 or 3.0. Tories inherited a mess from Labour and pointed out no £££ in the pot, Labour will do the same. Already Rachel Reeves has announced spending reviews and ordered cuts.

The circus will continue, whilst the Prisons are overcrowded, roads are potholed,no coppers on beat etc etc etc.

There is a concrete plan for reducing pressure on prisons, but the FB spin on it is that all non violent offenders will be released overnight. The actual situation is that there will be a staged reduction in numbers with people who have served 40% of their sentence.

there will be some cuts, some tax rises. Basically government has to maintain fiscal responsibility otherwise the currency will get devalued. Capital spending like infrastructure, energy generation is worth borrowing to spend on , and they have to build more in face of local opposition basically increasing housing supply, reducing rents and encouraging more equitable population distribution. And whether UK likes it or not, they need immigrants to reduce the median age of the population, though this creates political problems of its own

Riot police clash with protesters outside mosque as van set on fire

Riot police are on the scene at a mosque in Southport, as angry crowds throw bricks and set off fireworks after a number of children were stabbed in Southport.

Officers are believed to have sustained injuries as chaotic scenes unfold with men, several wearing balaclavas, throw loose bits of masonry and shout “England until I die”.

The three young girls killed in yesterday’s tragic knife attack have been named as Bebe King, six; Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven; and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine.

In tribute to Bebe, her devastated family said: “No words can describe the devastation that has hit our family as try to deal with the loss of our little girl Bebe.”

Meanwhile, the family of Alice Dasilva Aguiar paid this tribute: “Keep smiling and dancing like you love to do our Princess, like we said before to you, you’re always our princess and no one would change that. Love from Your Hero Daddy and Mummy.”

Eight other children suffered stab wounds and at least two are still in a critical condition, alongside two adults who were critically injured.

Armed police detained 17-year-old boy from Banks and seized a knife in connection with the stabbings, which is not suspected to be terror-related.

Police condemn 'sickening' violence outside mosque after false speculation over suspect

Merseyside Police has released a statement on the violence that has erupted outside a mosque in Southport.

The force says a large group of people, believed to be supporters of the English Defence League, began to throw items towards a mosque on St Luke's Road.

One officer has suffered a suspected broken nose and police vehicles have been set alight.

Bottles and wheelie bins have also been thrown at officers responding to the incident.

The violence appears to be linked to several false accusations spread online, with incorrect names of the 17-year-old boy that has been arrested shared on social media.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss says: "There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody, and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.

"We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK and speculation helps nobody at this time.

"It is sickening to see this happening within a community that has been devastated by the tragic loss of three young lives."

The unnamed suspect is from Wales, Merseyside Police has said previously, but there have been false claims that he was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK by boat.

UKs Foreign policy towards muslims has always been hostile. Difference now is the internal rhetoric formally of center right or left is abandoned for extreme right. Even their bull crap is taken as Gospel Truth, which is worrying.

Is the UK hostile to Muslims? Compared to which non-Muslim country with a significant immigrant Muslim minority?

There are no prohibitions on Muslims practicing their religion freely in the UK. Muslims can make money, find employment, and have equal access to the law. However, religion should always be kept out of politics. Unfortunately, a vocal group of marginalised Muslims seeks to use divisive influence for political gain. This mirrors the behavior of the far right.

Both far-right groups aim to create an "us vs. them" mentality. When people buy into the rhetoric from one side, they are also buying into it from the other.

the biggest problem is that the fringe on both sides are the most vocal. the vast majority of people just want to live their own lives, and they dont care about your religion. they have their own stuff to deal with.

It is the most hostile it's ever been.

Politicians use Muslims as bogey men more frequently than I've ever experienced. This included Starmer indirectly blaming Muslims for pressuring MPs so that the speaker wouldn't have to call a vote on a Gaza amendment a few months ago, the recent comments of Farage and Anderson.

Muslims are unable to protest peacefully without being characterized as Islamist insurgents.

The right wing media is constantly spewing up Islamophobic garbage that is lapped up by millions.

I think as Britain goes into a deeper decline the next ten years will be horrible.

Jumping the gun on Manchester airport incident had already given ammo to the far right. Many posters here and the media and that tik tok lawyer were guilty of giving that a religious tone without facts. This is just the sequel to that. Hard inconvenient reality.

All the cheering for labour fading away. Starmer has enough cushion in majority that he can ignore the Muslim vote bank for a long period of time and take steps what majority of British voters wish for.

Do you think if the posters and tik tok lawyer were silent on Manchester then the attack on the mosque wouldn't have it happened? It is bizarre to call it a sequel and it shows how much dumb logic can contribute to these societal issues.

A week before the Manchester attack we had Indian posters wet their pants over Muslims allegedly rioting in Leeds - based on news reports pumped out by the UK media.

Please don't type in code words and be clear because it's difficult to understand what you are on about?

Ironic that the protests in Rochdale were carried out quite peacefully by what I assume were mostly British Pakistanis.

Yet here we have had a mosque attacked despite having nothing to do with the murders yesterday, and the police also being assaulted by white EDL thugs.

Any incident is jumped on by these thugs. The right are smarting from the loss in the elections and the way Yaxley Lennon is given attention by the DM and DT tells you that it's not a coincidence. The EDL are thugs and anti terrorism legislation needs to be used to ban them

Thirty-nine police officers injured in Southport unrest

Thirty-nine police officers have been injured after unrest broke out in Southport hours after a vigil took place to remember the victims of a knife attack in which three children were killed, the North West Ambulance Service said.

Earlier, Merseyside Police said eight officers sustained serious injuries including fractures, lacerations, a suspected broken nose and concussion.

Other injuries included one officer being knocked unconscious, as well as some suffering head and serious facial injuries. Three police dogs were also hurt, with two having bricks thrown at them.

The disorder, which police said was believed to involve English Defence League supporters, began only a few streets away from Wednesday's vigil location, near to a mosque on St Luke's Road in Southport.

Those involved threw bricks at the mosque, set fire to cars and wheelie bins and caused damage to a local convenience store, police said.

In total, 27 officers were taken to hospital, and 12 were treated and discharged at the scene, the ambulance service said.

As a result of the disorder, a 24-hour section 60 Order has been introduced in the area, giving officers enhanced stop and search powers to stop individuals, police said, adding that it will be in place until 19:54 BST on Wednesday.

A section 34 Order has also been introduced, allowing police to direct people who are engaging in antisocial behaviour or are "likely to become involved in such behaviour".

Merseyside Police said extra officers will remain in the area "to provide a visible presence and reassure communities.

In addition, a small number ambulance resources will remain at the scene on St Luke's Road and will continue to support the police.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss said it was "sickening" that this was happening within a "devastated" community.

He said the force has faced "serious violence" in the Merseyside town, and he was "so proud to have witnessed off-duty officers parade back on duty to support their colleagues who had displayed such courage whilst under constant and sustained attack."

ACC Goss also thanked officers from Greater Manchester Police, Cheshire Police, Lancashire Police and North Wales Police for providing mutual aid and support.

He added the disorder involved many people "who do not live in the Merseyside area or care about the people of Merseyside".

“Sadly, offenders have destroyed garden walls so they could use the bricks to attack our officers and have set cars belonging to the public on fire, and damaged cars parked in the Mosque car park," he said.

“This is no way to treat a community, least of all a community that is still reeling from the events of Monday."

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after Monday's attack on a children's dance club in Hart Street.

ACC Goss said: "There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody, and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.

“We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK, and speculation helps nobody at this time."

'Fears for safety'

PM Sir Keir Starmer said on X that the people of Southport were "reeling" after the "horror inflicted on them yesterday".

He said that those who had "hijacked the vigil for the victims with violence and thuggery" had insulted the community and would "feel the full force of the law".

Families living nearby told the BBC they feared for their safety as stones flew past and police officers rushed to put on riot gear and pick up shields.

"I can’t believe this is happening in Southport," one young woman shouted from the front of her car as she tried to drive her young daughter away.

The disorder began after hundreds of people gathered near a local mosque attacking the front of it, throwing bricks, bottles, fireworks and rocks, many with hoods up and scarves hiding their faces.

Merseyside Police said those behind the violence had been fired up by social media posts which incorrectly suggested an Islamist link to Monday’s stabbings.

The Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had earlier warned about disinformation linked to the attack.

The suspect has no known links to Islam.

Ms Cooper later said it was "appalling" that police officers in Southport were facing attacks from "thugs on the streets who have no respect for a grieving community".

"I think everyone should be showing some respect for the community that is grieving and also for the police who are pursuing an urgent criminal investigation now, and who showed such heroism and bravery yesterday in the face of these horrific attacks," she said.

In a statement on X, Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell also said she was "absolutely appalled by the disgraceful scenes of violence".

"This is a community which has faced unimaginable tragedy, and it is grieving.

"Such behaviour is abhorrent and only causes further harm and suffering," she added.

'Focus on victims'

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy posted on X that more than 1,000 residents from Southport had come together at the vigil to remember the little girls who had died, those who were still critical in hospital and all those who witnessed and were traumatised by the events from yesterday.

"This is where all of our focus should be," she said.

The Liverpool Region Mosque Network said the violent scenes were "causing further fear and anxiety within our communities".

It added: "We must all unite and stand together against all forms of hate, violence and division."

Southport MP Patrick Hurley said he was "deeply concerned about reports of violent protests tonight".

He said they involved "people from outside our Southport community attacking our police and local people".

27 police officers injured and a religious place of worship attacked for no reason. I wonder why this has not been reported as a riot in the same way the Leeds incident with the Romanians last week?

Hold your horses Bhaijaan, that is still to be confirmed.

Ok bro.
One of the posters reaction prompted me to assume the identity of the culprit.

This is why people must behave and not post anything stupid as it could always lead to misunderstandings.

Let’s all be responsible.

Think you already made up your mind on the suspects religion in post #8.

What is the name of the culprit. Why is his religious identity being kept hidden.

There’s people out there that are upset about the suspect not being an illegal immigrant and a non muslim.

Meanwhile, any right minded person was horrified at the murder of these innocent children and would condemn however was responsible.

Kindly provide reference to the quote.
I only asked if the identity of the culprit has been made public or not.

It’s a heinous acts and we must get to the bottom of this before we can crack the whip on someone or a community.

Agreed but be honest. People's first instinct was to pray for the murderer to have some Muslim link.

In my heart there is only Prabhu Sri Ram and only love and empathy lives where he is.

But you were praying for the perpetrator of this horrific crime to be linked to be Muslims.

You can believe what you prefer .

I only care about humans suffering from heinous crimes from certain sections which people of your kind are always blindly defending.

Which side are you on?
Surely not humanity if you support such terrorists doesn’t matter which religion he belongs to.

Southport MP condemns rioters as victim’s mother calls for calm

The Southport MP, Patrick Hurley, has said rioters must face the “full force of the law” after 39 police officers suffered serious injuries during violent protests following a vigil for the victims of Monday’s knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club.

Merseyside police said those involved in the violent unrest in the north-west seaside town on Tuesday evening – who they believe included supporters of the English Defence League – set alight cars, threw bricks at a local mosque, damaged a local convenience store and set wheelie bins on fire.

The violent protests, which began at about 7.45pm, followed a peaceful vigil for the victims of the attack outside Southport’s Atkinson arts venue attended by hundreds of people, with many in tears as they laid flowers and cards of remembrance.

The mother of one of the three girls killed in the knife attack made an impassioned plea to “stop the violence”, the Liverpool Echo and PA Media reported.

Jenni Stancombe, the mother of Elsie Dot Stancombe, reportedly wrote on Facebook: “This is the only thing that I will write, but please please stop the violence in Southport tonight. The police have been nothing but heroic these last 24 hours and they and we don’t need this.”

Elsie, seven, Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, and Bebe King, six, were fatally stabbed in Southport on Monday. Eight other children suffered stab wounds and five are in a critical condition, alongside two adults who were also critically injured, police said.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, remains in custody.

North West ambulance service said 27 officers were taken to hospital, with 12 others being treated and discharged at the scene of the rioting. Merseyside police said eight officers suffered serious injuries including fractures, lacerations, a suspected broken nose and concussion. Three police dogs were also injured.

Hurley said the violence was the result of “propaganda and lies” circulated on social media about the identity of the attacker within minutes of Monday’s tragic incident.

The MP condemned “beered-up thugs” who threw bricks, telling BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “These were thugs who got the train in, these were not the people from Southport.

“They were using the horrific incident on Monday, the deaths of three little kiddies, for their own political purposes and actually to attack the very same first responders and the very same police, who had been on the scene on Monday, were then being pelted with bricks the day after by these thugs.”

He hit out at the “swirling morass” of social media “lies and propaganda”, saying they had fuelled rumours about the attacker’s identity as well as criticism of politicians. False claims had spread online that the suspect was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK by boat.

He told Times Radio: “We’d had all sorts of lies being spread and misinformation being spread about the alleged perpetrator and some people with the best of intentions then they tried to rebut this, they tried to argue back, but all that happens is you’re just amplifying people’s false messaging.”

He added: “This misinformation doesn’t just exist on people’s internet browsers and on people’s phones. It has real-world impact.”

Dozens of people turned up outside Southport mosque on Wednesday morning with brushes and shovels to help with the clean-up operation.

Writing on X, Keir Starmer, the prime minister, said on Tuesday night: “The people of Southport are reeling after the horror inflicted on them yesterday. They deserve our support and our respect. Those who have hijacked the vigil for the victims with violence and thuggery have insulted the community as it grieves.”

The home secretary, Yvette Cooper, described the rioting as “violent attacks from thugs on the streets”, which she branded “appalling”.

In a post on social media, Merseyside police said shops had been broken into and looted, adding that “those responsible will be brought to justice”.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Alex Goss, a Merseyside police assistant chief constable, said: “The actions in Southport tonight will involve many people who do not live in the Merseyside area or care about the people of Merseyside.

“There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody, and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.

“We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK and speculation helps nobody at this time.”

The suspect, who was born in Cardiff, is from the village of Banks, just outside Southport. A road in the area was cordoned off by detectives on Monday afternoon.

Police have said that, although the motive for the attack was unclear, it was not believed to be terror-related.

A 32-year-old man from Standish was arrested on suspicion of possession of a flick-knife in Eastbank Street, near where the vigil took place on Tuesday evening.

He was taken into custody and there were no reports that anyone was injured during the incident, Merseyside police said.

It’s a heinous acts and we must get to the bottom of this before we can crack the whip on someone or a community.

The whip has already been cracked on a community, the mosque in Southport has been attacked, and a shop in the area which presumably belongs to an Asian has been broken into and looted. It is now boarded up and closed.

Unfortunately, none of these communities had anything to do with the murder of those three girls.

I think the shop owner was Sri Lankan poor guy has lost everything because of rumour mongering and fake news.
