Children's clubs tighten safety procedures and cancel classes after Southport stabbings​

Children's clubs are tightening their safeguarding policies or cancelling sessions while they conduct reviews, as the industry reacts to the killing of three girls in Southport.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested following the knife attack on children in a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on Monday.

Many clubs and classes for children are now reviewing how they keep children safe and reassuring parents.

Louise Willan, chief executive of Jets Centre in Liverpool's Waterloo area, said she has been through policies with staff, spoken to Sefton Council and emailed updates to parents.

"We have reviewed everything, even though they are very robust," Ms Willan said.

"We are quite tight. No visitor can come in unless we keycode them in. Plus, we have CCTV, as well as locked [outer] gates."

The club, which looks after 2-11-year-olds from "very diverse" communities, also asks for a password at pick-up time that is unique to each child, Ms Willan said.

"It's just very frightening. We are scared."

Last night's riots had "really upset the community", she told Sky News.

"We went to a lovely vigil and within half hour the town had been turned upside down. That's how sad it was that people have got that way."

Carnival Chaos Circus school in Southport cancelled its classes until further notice on Monday so it can "review safety and security at the studio", it posted online.

Liverpool Trojans Baseball Club has also made the "difficult decision" to pause youth sessions while it reviews processes to "ensure that we are keeping your children as safe as possible".

"We have looked on in disbelief as news of the horrific incident in Southport has unfolded", while concern for child safety is "at an all-time high", the club wrote on Facebook yesterday.

Anouska Cassells, a former nursery manager, runs music and movement classes for toddlers at her home in Hadfield, Derbyshire.

She used to sometimes leave her front door open, especially during the current hot weather, but now it is always locked, she said.

"From now, everyone will be greeted by me and exited by me. I can see who is outside," she told Sky News, adding she has updated parents directly.

She called it was beyond anyone's "wildest" fears that "anything could ever happen like this".

"The upset is horrendous, I can't imagine what families are going through. To drop a child off somewhere that they know and love, and for this to happen, is just heartbreaking."

Freedom Dancers in Greater Manchester is also double-checking its procedures.

"We have a locked door, CCTV at our studio and door camera in place however please rest assure we will be reviewing our safety protocols before you return to class. Safeguarding our students is paramount," it said in a comment on Facebook.

In London's Walthamstow, Sylvestrian Leisure Centre emailed parents to tell them about new "drop-off and collection procedures to ensure the safety of all children attending our holiday camp".

Guidance from the government's education department, published in April, says 'education settings' should have a "security lead... to develop and maintain policies and plans which promote a good security culture and deters someone intending to cause harm from targeting your setting".

There are no prohibitions on Muslims practicing their religion freely in the UK. Muslims can make money, find employment, and have equal access to the law. However, religion should always be kept out of politics. Unfortunately, a vocal group of marginalised Muslims seeks to use divisive influence for political gain. This mirrors the behavior of the far right.

Both far-right groups aim to create an "us vs. them" mentality. When people buy into the rhetoric from one side, they are also buying into it from the other.

Boy, 17, charged after three girls killed in Southport stabbing attack

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder and attempted murder after a mass stabbing in Southport.

Three children, six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar, died as a result of the attack at The Hart Space community centre.

A "Taylor Swift Yoga and Dance Workshop" aimed at children aged between primary school years two and six (seven to 11 years old) was taking place at the time of the attack in the seaside town, which is north of Liverpool.

The suspect, who is from a nearby village in Banks in Lancashire, but was born in Cardiff, Wales, was arrested on Monday and a knife was seized by armed police.

He has been charged with three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.

Agitators accused of Islamophobia for linking Southport attack to Muslims

British Muslims, activists and civil rights groups have decried riots in Southport and hate speech in the aftermath of a fatal stabbing attack, as they spoke of a sense of fear and rising Islamophobia.

The northern English seaside town, which was struck by grief after a suspect stabbed children and adults on Monday at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday dance club, was plunged into chaos on Tuesday evening when rioters attacked a local mosque, chanted “F*** Muslims”, and assaulted police.

More than 50 officers were injured during the riots which erupted after a peaceful vigil. Tensions heated up as online misinformation and speculation spread over the knife attack suspect. Unverified claims have suggested he is a Muslim and a migrant.

Police have said the suspect is a 17-year-old who was born in the Welsh capital, Cardiff. He lived in a village near Southport. No further details about him have been announced since suspects cannot be named before they are charged. Furthermore, suspects under 18 have automatic anonymity.

Merseyside Police have said the tragedy, during which Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar were killed, is not being treated as a terrorism-related incident.

But figures such as the far-right agitator Tommy Robinson have stirred tensions, railing against Muslims and undocumented migrants after the attack while suggesting the government, police and media are conspiring to hide information from the public.

In a seven-minute video posted on Tuesday to his X account with the caption, “There’s more evidence to suggest Islam is a mental health issue rather than a religion of peace”, Robinson tells his 800,000 followers, “They’re replacing the British nation with hostile, violent, aggressive migrants … Your children don’t matter to [the Labour government].”

Nigel Farage, the hard-right populist MP, shared a video on X on Tuesday in which he asked, “Was this guy (the suspect) being monitored by the security services? Some reports say he was. Others, less sure. Police say it’s a non-terror incident … I just wonder whether the truth is being withheld from us.”

A slew of other accounts on social media sites blamed Muslims for Monday’s attack, which has shocked the United Kingdom and led to an outpouring of grief and sympathy for the families of the victims. Five of the eight other children who suffered stab wounds – and two adults – are in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police said some of the rioters “were believed to be supporters of the English Defence League” – the far-right movement founded by Robinson.

The Liverpool Region Mosque Network said in a statement that it was “shocked and horrified” by the knife attack against children and adults at the dance school.

“A minority of people are attempting to portray that this inhumane act is somehow related to the Muslim community. Frankly, it is not, and we must not let those who seek to divide us spread hatred and use this as an opportunity,” it said.

“I felt terrified for Muslims in Southport,” said Fatima Rajina, a research fellow based at the Stephen Lawrence Research Centre who specialises in issues including identity, race and British Muslims. “No one can ever tell Muslims that our fears are just a figment of our imagination. Islamophobia has always been facilitated by politicians’ dog-whistle politics who’re never held accountable.”

A post on X that has been shared more than 4,000 times, referenced another recent riot that some online agitators mistakenly blamed on Muslims.

“Before you ridicule any British Muslim for saying they no longer feel safe living in the country of their birth, just remember that in the past two weeks, we have been blamed for the Leeds riots and the Southport stabbings, neither of which had anything to do with us,” it said.

In the northern city of Leeds, people recently rioted after local authorities intervened in a child protection case.

The Runnymede Trust race equality think tank said of the Southport riots: “This is the inevitable, devastating, outcome of rising Islamophobia that’s enabled to fester on social media, in mainstream media, and by our political class. Our thoughts are with the people of Southport, and British Muslims across the country.”

The head of the Muslim Council of Britain, Zara Mohammed, said: “At a time of great tragedy, loss, and mourning, we must stand firm against the cynical forces of hatred and division. This does not represent our diverse Britain and the people of Southport. The government must address the increasing rise of violent far-right extremism targeting Muslim communities. More must be done to tackle Islamophobia.”

The Mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotheram, said the riots “only further traumatise a community that is already struggling to come to terms with this attack. Mindless violence directed at the very people who ran towards the danger yesterday, and outright Islamophobia, only distract from the work of delivering justice.”

Jenni Stancombe, the mother of the seven-year-old victim Elsie Dot Stancombe, called for calm.

“This is the only thing that I will write, but please stop the violence in Southport tonight,” she posted on social media.

Police get more time with suspect as five held over unrest

Police have been granted more time to question a boy over the deaths of three children in the Southport knife attack.

The 17-year-old has been in custody since he was arrested in the Merseyside town on Monday.

Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar died and eight other children were injured in the stabbings at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

A peaceful vigil took place on Tuesday evening but unrest broke out shortly afterwards near a mosque, leading to the arrest of five men over the disorder.

Merseyside Police said the disturbance was believed to have involved English Defence League supporters and those behind the violence had been fired up by social media posts which suggested an Islamist link to the stabbings.

A protest in central London on Wednesday night also saw violent clashes with police, with bottles and cans thrown at Metropolitan Police officers.

Flares were also seen being thrown towards the gates of Downing Street in Whitehall.

Disorder also broke out in Hartlepool in Teesside, where Cleveland Police said they had made several arrests.

The 17-year-old boy, who was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after Monday's attack, has no known links to Islam.

The suspect, who has not been named because of his age, was born in Cardiff and later moved to Banks in Lancashire, a village that lies a few miles north of Southport.

Five of the children remain in a critical condition, along with two adults, following the attack at the Hart Space centre on Hart Street.

The disturbance broke out outside Southport Mosque on St Luke's Road, near the scene of the attack, a short time after thousands paid their respects to the dead and injured at a vigil at the Atkinson Theatre on Lord Street.

In a message widely shared on social media, Elsie's mother Jenni Stancombe condemned the violence.

"This is the only thing that I will write, but please stop the violence in Southport tonight," she wrote.

"The police have been nothing but heroic these last 24 hours and we don't need this."

Jonathan Hayes, who runs a business next door to the Southport studio where the attack took place, was in a critical condition after being stabbed in the leg and has undergone major surgery.

From his hospital bed, he told the BBC he did not see himself as a hero, as some press reports were portraying him.

Instead, he said: “Some would say confronting a guy wielding a hunting knife is utter madness”.

Leanne Lucas, the yoga teacher who organised the dance class which was attacked, has also awoken and has spoken for the first time, her family told the BBC.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said 49 of her officers had been injured in the disturbance, along with four others from Lancashire Police who had been drafted in to help.

The force said eight "sustained serious injuries including fractures, lacerations, a suspected broken nose and concussion" and were treated in hospital.

They added that three police dogs also suffered lacerations, cuts and burns.

A police representative said a 31-year-old from St Helens, a 39-year-old from Southport and a 31-year-old from West Derby in Liverpool had been held on suspicion of violent disorder, while a 32-year-old from Manchester, "with a probation address in Southport, was arrested on suspicion of affray and possessing a bladed article".

On Wednesday night police said a fifth arrest had been made after officers called to a domestic disturbance recognised a man from footage of the disorder.

Merseyside Police said a 39-year-old man from Southport had been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, threats to kill and a racially aggravated public order offence.

The force also said a 32-year-old man was charged with possession of an offensive weapon after a knife was recovered.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told a news conference that more arrests would likely follow.

"It's impossible to say [how many will be arrested]. It's really early days in the investigation," she said.

"Initially, there were about 70 people who made their way away from the vigil and were making their way towards the mosque.

"They suddenly became about 200 in number and then others joined that number."

Merseyside Police Federation's Chris McGlade said his injured colleagues were the same "courageous officers" who were themselves trying to come to terms with the "unimaginable tragedy" of Monday's attack.

A Section 60 Order giving police extra stop and search powers and the ability to disperse disruptive crowds was put in place and later extended until Thursday evening.

Extra officers would also remain in the area for reassurance, police said.

The town's MP Patrick Hurley said "thugs" travelled to the area to use the deaths "for their own political purposes".

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had earlier warned about disinformation linked to the attack.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss said there had been "much speculation and hypothesis" around the teenager and "some individuals" were using it to "bring violence and disorder to our streets".

"We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK, and speculation helps nobody at this time," he said.

Rumours of a second protest in Southport town centre earlier were unfounded, Sefton Council said.

It added: "We have confirmed that there is no disruption or disorder in Southport at this time and the town centre remains fully open for business."

Following the night of disorder, a clean-up operation began, with many members of the community coming together to help.

Volunteers brought brushes and shovels to clean up the Sussex Road and St Luke's Road area following the riot.

Melted plastic from wheelie bins which were set alight could be seen stuck to the tarmac on St Luke's Road.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said there had been "a tremendous effort by members of the public" to help.

She said locals had assisted in cleaning up the streets, "using hose pipes and brushes, and donating food and dog food to officers to restore the pride and respect they have for their town".

Ibrahim Hussein, chairman of Southport Mosque, said he was moved to see locals turn up to help rebuild parts of the mosque damaged in the disorder.

"It brings tears to my eyes because although I know the people of Southport and I know how beautiful they are, but this was still a moving experience to see all that," he said.

A crowdfunding page which was launched by a Taylor Swift fans group in the aftermath of the attack to raise money for Alder Hey Children's Hospital, which has treated many of those involved, has raised more than £300,000.

Keir Starmer will host senior police leaders in Downing Street on Thursday afternoon after a second night of violent unrest across England.

The prime minister is expected to stress to police chiefs that those who perpetrate violence and “sow hatred” should be met with “the full force of the law”.

The meeting comes after a 17-year-old boy was charged with the murders of three girls. Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, were fatally stabbed on Monday at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on Hart Street in Southport, Merseyside.

Dozens of arrests have been made as disorder following the Southport knife attack spread to different parts of the country.

More than 100 people were arrested in central London on Wednesday evening as officers clashed with protesters on Whitehall, close to Downing Street, during a demonstration.

Unrest also broke out in Hartlepool where eight people were arrested, several officers were injured and a police car was set on fire.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will meet senior police leaders on Thursday to offer them his "full backing" in the face of ongoing unrest.

Dal Babu, former Chief Superintendent and firearms commander in the Met, has blamed the disorder on the "reckless" spread of misinformation about the identity of the suspect charged in the stabbing.

Speaking on BBC R4's Today Programme, Mr Babu said the police have taken the "unprecedented" decision to confirm the suspect "was born in this country".

In London, demonstrators were seen launching flares towards the gates of Downing Street and at a statue of Winston Churchill.

People could be heard chanting phrases such as "stop the boats" and "save our kids" as they threw bottles and cans at officers.

Earlier, the Met said conditions placed on the protest had been breached.

The Met said it made arrests for a range of offences including violent disorder, assault on an emergency worker and breach of protest conditions on Wednesday evening.

In a statement, the Met said officers were deployed to "ensure disorder was contained" and that some "suffered minor injuries".

Several officers were also injured in Hartlepool after violence broke out in the town, Cleveland Police said.

Ch Supt David Sutherland said of the Cleveland arrests: "At this stage we believe the protest is in connection with the incident in Southport earlier this week."

The force said they "expect further arrests to be made in the coming days".

Disorder was also reported in Aldershot. Local MP Alex Baker said a peaceful protest "descended into intimidating behaviour" at a hotel in the Hampshire town.

"This incident was exacerbated by people from outside our community who came here determined to cause unrest," she said.

In Manchester, two men were arrested for violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.

A teenage boy accused of murdering a 15-year-old girl has told jurors he did stab her.

Holly Newton was stabbed multiple times in an alleyway in Hexham, Northumberland, in January 2023 by a boy who she claimed had been "stalking" her, Newcastle Crown Court has heard.

A 17-year-old youth, who was 16 at the time and cannot be identified, has admitted manslaughter but denies murder.

He told the court he could not remember the attack.

Prosecutors said the boy followed Holly for about 45 minutes after she left school on 27 January 2023, before attacking her in an alleyway next to a pizza shop at about 17:00 GMT.

Appearing via videolink from the unit where he is being held, the boy was asked by his barrister Nigel Edwards KC who stabbed Holly.

"Me," the youth replied, adding he also stabbed another youth who was trying to break up the assault, although he has also denied wounding offences.

"Do you remember that happening?" Mr Edwards asked.

The boy, who the court heard has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, replied: "No."

The boy told the court he had been abused as a child, self-harmed and attempted suicide on multiple occasions.

Mr Edwards asked the boy what he wanted to do in Hexham the day Holly was killed.

"I wasn't going there to hurt her or kill her," the boy replied.

When asked what he wanted to happen that day, the boy said he was going to "try and take my own life again".

Jurors have previously heard he told police he had been trying to stab himself and his mind went "blank".

On the morning of the attack, Holly had complained to friends that the boy was "stalking" her after he turned up uninvited at her home in Haltwhistle the night before.

Her mother had arranged a meeting with police about the boy, but Holly was killed hours before it was due to take place.

Holly had also been "nervous" of leaving school that day because she thought the boy may be outside waiting for her, but she walked into town after he lied about his location, the court has heard.

Jurors have been told the knife the boy had taken from his kitchen broke during the attack, which passers-by eventually managed to stop.

Locals come together to rebuild wall outside mosque

This morning I saw locals removing the damaged wall at the mosque here in Southport. Children helped to sweep away the debris.

I have returned a few hours later and a team of builders are putting cement and bricks down to rebuild it – it is almost complete.

This is the spirit of the town that I have witnessed over the last two days coming together in the face of adversity and tragedy.

And still people from the local community are coming out with cold drinks and packets of crisps for the workers.

The suspect, who is from the Lancashire village of Banks, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court, and also faces a charge of possessing a curved kitchen knife.

He was remanded into youth detention accommodation.

The Cardiff-born teenager could not previously be named due to his age but Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC ruled it could be made public following applications from the media.

The defendant is due to turn 18 next week.

The judge said he was mindful of "misinformation" that had spread regarding the accused's identity.

Southport saw a night of unrest on Tuesday following a vigil in memory of the victims, with protesters gathering near a mosque in the Merseyside town.

Five men were arrested - with one later charged with possessing a knife - after a police van was set alight and bricks were thrown, with 53 police officers injured.

Judge Menary said: "Continuing to prevent full reporting at this stage has a disadvantage of allowing others up to mischief to continue to spread misinformation in a vacuum."

He acknowledged his decision was "exceptional" but said "the balance clearly comes down in favour of the public interest in allowing full reporting of these proceedings".

Arguing against naming the defendant, the prosecution said he had an "autism spectrum disorder diagnosis" and had been "unwilling to leave the house and communicate with family for a period of time".

He attended an appearance at a youth court at about 09:00 BST, arriving in a prison van with a large police escort.

In front of a packed press gallery, he glanced at reporters before he was asked to sit down before District Judge James Hatton.

Wearing a grey police-issued tracksuit, the defendant pulled his sweatshirt above his nose and lowered his head during the five-minute hearing, in which he did not speak.

None of the families of the victims or the defendant were in court.

The accused will next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on 25 October for a pre-trial preparation hearing.

Muslims are unable to protest peacefully without being characterized as Islamist insurgents.

it is definitely not more hostile than its ever been, post the 7/7 bombings i remember the atmosphere was tangibly fraught, i felt uncomfortable in London with Londoners thinking every bearded brown dude might blow themselves up. Muslims just had protests of nearly a million people a few months ago for Palestine, and the right wing got bricked, its swings and round aboutss but to say Muslims cant protest is hyperbole.

the right wing media has spewed the same stuff for decades now, Muslim groomers, race wars, terrorists, honour killers, its all been in the news non stop since 9/11.

whilst i agree with this, banning them wont solve anything, its easy enough to rename and rebrand when your as small as them. you need to understand why this is happening, these guys are essentially in the left behind economy in dead end towns with economic standards of eastern Europe.
