Michael Bracewell will captain the BLACKCAPS for the first time on home soil in the upcoming five-game KFC T20I series against Pakistan, starting at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday, March 16

Bracewell was a star performer in the BLACKCAPS runner-up finish at the recent ICC Champions Trophy and is one of seven players from the squad set to join the T20 camp in Christchurch on Friday.

The 34-year-old Wellington Firebirds all-rounder has racked up 66 international appearances since debuting for the BLACKCAPS in all three formats in 2022.

Bracewell captained the BLACKCAPS white-ball tour of Pakistan in April last year and said he relished the challenge of leading the side.

“It’s a great honour and a real privilege to captain your country,” he said.

“I really enjoyed leading the side in Pakistan last year and we’ve got many players from that squad included for this series as well, which is nice.

“Mitch Santner’s done a great job since taking over as white-ball captain and I’ll really just be trying to build on his good work and create an enjoyable environment for the guys to perform in.

“Pakistan are always a dangerous short-form side with lots of power and pace and we know they’ll be hurting after an early exit in the Champions Trophy.

“For the guys coming back from Dubai, there’s obviously a level of disappointment, but also a lot of pride in the way we were able to perform and represent New Zealand.

“We’ve loved all of the support we’ve received from afar and are certainly looking forward to getting back home and playing in front of our own fans and in front of full venues.”

With T20 regulars Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and white-ball captain Mitchell Santner unavailable with IPL commitments, the T20 squad features a mix of established and returning stars.

Ish Sodhi has been recalled after missing the recent home series against Sri Lanka, while Ben Sears has recovered from the torn hamstring which forced him to return home on the eve of the Champions Trophy last month.

Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke have been included for the first three games of the series only, as the selectors seek to manage the workloads of the pace-bowlers returning from the Champions Trophy.

Matt Henry, who finished as the leading wicket-taker at the tournament despite missing the final through injury, has been selected for games four and five, subject to further assessment once the ODI squad arrives home on Wednesday.

Finn Allen, Jimmy Neesham and Tim Seifert have also been included in the squad after confirming their availability, if selected, for the build-up series’ to next year’s ICC T20 World Cup in India (against India and Afghanistan in January and February).

The trio were unavailable for the recent home series against Sri Lanka in December and January due to their overseas T20 league commitments, but have since returned for their Major Associations in the Ford Trophy.

Tim Robinson continues his run at the top of the T20 order, while pace-bowler Zak Foulkes (games 4 and 5) and wicket-keeper Mitch Hay retain their spots in the squad after impressing in the recent series against Sri Lanka.

Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman, who were both part of the Champions Trophy campaign, will provide the top-order batting experience.

Bevon Jacobs, who was part of the squad for the recent T20 series against Sri Lanka, was unavailable due to IPL commitments, while Kane Williamson wasn’t considered for selection after making himself unavailable.

Selector Sam Wells said the Pakistan series was important for several reasons.

“We’re certainly starting to narrow our sights on the ICC T20 World Cup in India next February and March,” he said.

“We made it clear in our planning and communication with players that availability for that tournament and the build-up to it was required to be considered for this series against Pakistan.

“Half of this squad is only returning from the Champions Trophy on Wednesday and so we’re going to need to manage those players really carefully.

“It’s nice to be welcoming back the likes of Ish, Kyle and Ben after time away from our T20 set-up.”

Wells confirmed Allen, Neesham and Seifert were back in the mix after committing to the T20 programme and lead-up to the World Cup.

He said all three were proven match-winners at the top level and were coming off some decent domestic form in the recently completed Ford Trophy.

“The Pakistan series will provide an opportunity for all players to put their best foot forward and push their case for selection in the 15-player squad for next year’s major global tournament.

“We’re excited for Michael to captain the team for the first time on home soil. He’s a natural leader and in good form at the moment so I’m sure he’s looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Gary Stead will lead the coaching staff, alongside batting coach Luke Ronchi and bowling coach Jacob Oram.

Well balanced squad selected by NZL. It will be a good series if Pakistan plays their A game.

NZ should have selected Sodhi for CT given it was played in SC, if he has fit.

Anyways good squad.

Will PCT be able to win anything after their 7000 kms of travel whilst their opponents have had 0 travel and been based in one country and know the pitches inside out?

There should be an * against All NZ wins....

Matt Henry ruled out of remainder of T20 series | Foulkes retained

BLACKCAPS pace-bowler Matt Henry has been ruled out of the remainder of the KFC T20I series against Pakistan as he continues his injury rehabilitation programme.

Henry injured his right-shoulder during the recent ICC Champions Trophy semi-final win against South Africa and has also been managing an ongoing left-knee issue.

Canterbury pace-bowler Zak Foulkes has been retained for the remaining two matches of the series in Henry’s place, after the 22-year-old was called in for the first three games,.

Will O’Rourke, who was originally listed for the opening three games, has instead joined the T20I squad for the final two matches in place of Kyle Jamieson.

The BLACKCAPS lead the series 2-1, with the remaining games at Bay Oval in Tauranga on Sunday and Sky Stadium in Wellington on Wednesday night.

2 1/2 years to make a semi final team at least; wonder how many of the CT duds will survive?

Beyond Saim, I have no hope (Fakhar will be 37).

Latham ruled out with fractured hand | Nicholls & Mariu added, Bracewell to captain

BLACKCAPS ODI wicket-keeper batsman Tom Latham has been ruled out of the upcoming Chemist Warehouse ODI series against Pakistan with a fractured right hand.

Latham was struck on the hand by a delivery while batting in the nets during training this week, with an X-ray revealing the fracture which will require a cast and at least four weeks rest and rehabilitation.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead confirmed Henry Nicholls would replace Latham in the squad, with current T20I captain Michael Bracewell to continue to lead in the ODIs, with Mitch Hay taking the wicket-keeping gloves.

Nicholls, who has 78 ODI caps to his name, has missed much of this season with a calf-strain sustained in November, but returned this month with five 50-plus scores in his six domestic innings.

The selectors also confirmed opener Will Young will come out of the ODI squad for games two and three of the series to be with his wife as they await the birth of their first child.

Young will play Saturday’s opening game in his hometown of Napier before being replaced in the squad by 23-year-old Canterbury batsman Rhys Mariu who’s earned his maiden call-up, as the batting cover.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead was confident the team would adapt to the changes.

“We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons,” he said.

“What it does do is offer opportunities to others players and it’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as welcome back Henry.

“Henry’s been in good form since returning from his three month injury lay-off and he’ll add valuable skills and experience to the team.

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series and we wish him a speedy recovery. The side is in safe hands with Michael who’s done a great job through the T20I series.

“Finally we wish Will and his wife Elise all the best next week as they await their first child which is such a special and important time for them.”

With more than two years until the next ICC Cricket World Cup, ODI squad selection preference was given to players on full national and domestic contracts.

The BLACKCAPS ODI squad assembles in Napier on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s opening game at McLean Park.

Even the NZ commentators have laid into the team ie bowling attack, batting ie the team has been completely surprised by the pace, bounce, swing, seam of the NZ conditions and the team did not get better as the series progressed one bit.

Babar, Rizwan were chilling in Pakistan when they could have arrived early in NZ to acclimatize to the conditions.

This has easily been our worst tour to NZ ever.

We are the stage sadly where even if we prepare we are far far behind modern cricket. What a shambles.

What is there for them to acclimatise. They have played in nz multiple times.last time in 2018, babar had avg of 6 in 5 odis.so this time he over performed .

The tour is unnecessarily long.

Both sides are depleted. 8 games are too much. Should've been 6 games (3 T20s and 3 ODIs).

Pakistan is depleted too. No Saim and Fakhar (2 of their best batters).
Pakistan is depleted due to injuries however NZ is clearly more depleted.

If your entire batting lineup relies on just 2 guys then you're a weak team plain and simple, especially when one of those guys is a 23 year old

Pakistan is a weak team tbh... They were never been good since that world cup 2023 humiliation. Pakistan moved in opposite direction to the whole world by doing nonsense selections.

We do have talent coming up. Our talent is not on par with aussie, Indian or NZ talent but it isn't as bad as what the current team represents.

For starters Azan Awais deserves a chance in the test team, it's utter nonsense that Imam, Hurraira or someone else gets selected over him, he is a good test batsmen.

Maaz Sadaqat deserves a chance in all formats as well.

Then guys like mubasir khan are significantly superior to guys like shadab, Niazi etc.

Agreed. I am still in shock at how Abdullah got selected without any performance in domestic before his comeback... How?

How Shadab got selected. Imam also looked mediocre. Rizwan still playing at 4 despite his pathetic form and our own batting coach knows that he is not suitable but he is quiet.

Abdullah was backed by Babar that's why. Before his debut he had only 7 List A games to his name and 11 FC Games but they thought it was a good idea to make him a world cup starting opener lol.

And I don't get this whole infatuation with his technique. It's not good nor is he techincally proficient.

He's a bunny against inswing since theirs too much space between his bat and body, similarly he's completly vulnerable on anything that's pitched at a test match line and length on the offstump line.

Why is playing a cover drive now the gold standard of what classifies as a good technique. Infact the best techniques in the world are those that have their bats close to their body, Very similar to Ponting, Sachin, Lara, Since it allows you get in position to pull the ball on the offstump line and length and flick any inswinging deliveries to the boundary.

Pakistan penalised for slow over-rate against New Zealand in the second ODI

The visitors were also fined for slow over-rate in the opening ODI against the Black Caps.

Mohammed Rizwan-led Pakistan side have been fined five percent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the second ODI in Hamilton on Wednesday.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after the visiting side was found to be one over short of the target after the time allowances were taken into consideration.

As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which governs minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fees for each over their team falls short of bowling in stipulated time.

Skipper Rizwan pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Wayne Knights, along with third umpire Paul Reiffel and fourth umpire Chris Brown.

This is the second consecutive instance when Pakistan have been fined for a slow over-rate. In the first ODI against New Zealand in Napier, which the visitors lost by 73 runs, the team was found to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were considered.

Trailing 1-0 in the series, Pakistan were bested by 84 runs as Mitchell Hay scored a career-best 99* to help the hosts post 292/8 in the first innings. Ben Sears led New Zealand’s charge with the ball, registering career-best figures of 5/59 to help bowl out Pakistan for 208.

The third ODI between the two sides is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, in Mount Maunganui.

Just remember, the only match pakistan won on the entire tour was when a young team was selected and Rizwan, Babar and Naseem were not there.
