Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers abandoned

The pitch at GMHBA Stadium was rain-affected in the days prior to the game. Ground staff worked throughout the day to rectify the situation and umpires considered the pitch safe for play to start.

However in the seventh over umpires abandoned the game, deeming there was foreseeable risk to the safety of the players.

Each team will receive one point unless the game can be rescheduled.

Fans will be refunded the cost of their tickets.

CA will conduct a thorough review into the extremely frustrating circumstances that have resulted in the game being abandoned and a huge disappointment for fans and players.

What an incredible match, Sydney Sixers defeated Adelaide Strikers by 1 run.

Opting to bowl after winning the toss, the Strikers witnessed the Sixers posting a total of 155/7 in their innings, spearheaded by Jordan Silk (66*).

Despite Silk's impressive batting, Jamie Overton shared the spotlight taking 3/23.

In response, skipper Matthew Short knocked a back-to-back half century to put Strikers in this one.

The Sydney Sixers have put aside a turbulent 24 hours off the field to extend their unbeaten start to the BBL season with a thrilling one run win over the Adelaide Strikers in a Friday night classic that went down to the final ball.

In the best game of the season so far, the Strikers needed 18 runs off the final over and got it down to just six off the final three balls after Jamie Overton (31 not out and 3-23) whacked Ben Dwarshuis for six.

But the left-arm quick held his nerve, with Overton needing a boundary off the final delivery but only managing to slice it out to the man in the deep for two.

The Summer Solstice was already the longest day of the year but it must have felt like it was never going to end as more details emerged of Tom Curran’s altercation with an umpire last week that’s seen him banned for four BBL games pending an appeal.

But the Sixers handled the loss of their star import – as well as Sean Abbott who had a stomach bug – to defend their home patch thanks to some classy bowling from their experienced leaders.

Defending their total of 7/155, Moises Henriques (2-11), Jackson Bird (2-19) and Todd Murphy (1-14) all chipped in to help veteran Daniel Hughes celebrate his 100th BBL game with a crucial win in front of a strong crowd of more than 18,000.

On a pitch where just about everyone else struggled, Jordan Silk (66 not out) made batting look easy with one of his finest ever knocks in the BBL.

The Sixers veteran came in with his side reeling after they lost 3-1 in the space of six deliveries, but he steadied things with skipper Moises Henriques (23 off 24) to help the Sixers post a more than competitive total.

The rest of his teammates combined for nine boundaries but Silk had no such issues, smashing seven fours and the only six of the innings off the final delivery.

He hasn’t been as dominant as he once was, but Chris Lynn wound back the clock with some vintage brutality to ease the pressure in the run chase.

There’s a reason he’s hit more sixes than anyone in BBL history, with Lynn (37 off 17) blasting another two on Friday night, including one off Ben Dwarshuis that threatened to land on the roof of the Bill O’Reilly Stand.

The Strikers always looked comfortable with Lynn at the crease, but his departure in the eighth over slowed things down with Matt Short (55 off 48) their main hope of reeling in the tricky target.

The skipper wasn’t at his destructive best and eventually fell in the power surge which left the lower order too much to do as the Strikers suffered their first loss of the season.

Matthew Wade has blasted 82 as the Hobart Hurricanes overcame the Melbourne Renegades and some fielding restriction drama to notch their first win of KFC BBL|13.

After missing a game with back spasms, Wade's 50-ball knock on Saturday night at Blundstone Arena got his side past Melbourne's 5-183 with an over to spare and six wickets in the sheds.

Wade shared a 140-run partnership with Mac Wright, a late inclusion for Ben McDermott who copped a blow at training.

Wright played a support role early but finished with five sixes and five fours in his 36-ball 63.

Wade, who muscled nine fours and three sixes, was caught in the deep in the 17th over but by then the damage had been done.

The Hurricanes are 1-2 from three games, while the Renegades are without a win from four matches.

There was confusion late in the Renegades' innings when a no-ball was called against Hobart quick Chris Jordan in the final over for an incorrect field.

Under competition rules, teams are limited to four fielders outside the circle if they don't bowl their overs in the allotted time.

Hobart's Tim David told Fox Cricket he was under the impression the team had not gone over time.

"I dare say if we were told we needed an extra fielder in, we wouldn't have bowled (with that field)," he said via the on-field mic.

"We were told the previous over the time on the scoreboard was wrong and we had until 8.45 (pm).

"The scoreboard said 8.43 and we bowled it, and it was a no-ball. Got to respect the umpire's decision."

Renegades allrounder Will Sutherland hit the ensuing free-hit for a boundary.

Earlier, imports Quinton de Kock (38 from 22) and Joe Clarke (38 from 25) got the Renegades off to a quick start after they were sent in to bat.

Melbourne were flying at 0-78 in the eighth over, before losing three wickets in four deliveries.

Hurricanes spinner Paddy Dooley (2-32) got rid of de Kock and danger man Jake Fraser-McGurk for a first-ball duck in consecutive balls.

Nathan Ellis then clean bowled Clarke off the first ball of the next over.

Jono Wells (40 not out from 24) and Aaron Finch (31 from 28) steadied before swinging freely late.

December 24, 2023: Following the abandonment of the KFC BBL match between the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers, the League can confirm the match will not be rescheduled.

The circumstances giving rise to the abandoned match remain the subject of an ongoing investigation.

While various options to reschedule were explored, it became apparent rescheduling would be challenging due to a variety of factors, including the existing schedule across the two Clubs and limited access to venues.

As a result, each team will be awarded one point.​

Heat’s brilliant unbeaten run continues despite 7-16 collapse and all-time Thunder first

Prime Minister’s XI skipper Nathan McSweeney showed just how versatile he can be in Australia’s Next Gen plans with the classy 73 that has kept the Brisbane Heat on top of the BBL.

The Heat did their best to derail the supreme start that McSweeney and opener Josh Brown (39) gave them at 1-107 in the 12th over with a stunning collapse of 7-16 off their final 18 balls at the Gabba.

The Heat were 20 runs short of expectations at 172 all out thanks to career-best T20 figures of 5-30 from Sydney Thunder’s left-arm quick Daniel Sams.

It hinted at a Thunder win when openers Cam Bancroft (46) and Alex Hales (28) made a flying start to 0-58 into the seventh over but Hales’ careless exit messed up the momentum.

The new-look Heat were clinical once they opened a wound with that first wicket and won by 15 runs with the Thunder reduced to 9-157. Confidence and not just being a bull-at-a-gate side are big steps this season. Spinners Matthew Kuhnemann (2-25) and Mitch Swepson, with his miserly 1-29, turned the game in tandem with the ball and paceman Xavier Bartlett got the big wicket of Bancroft.

The Heat now have four wins and a point from a washout to head the BBL.

Wednesday night’s 52-ball innings from McSweeney was full of all the fast hands and smart shotmaking that have the Australian selectors sizing him up for an international career.

He has two Sheffield Shield centuries for South Australia already this summer and 40 at No.5 against Pakistan in his PM XI’s appearance.

The right-hander was on from the start...an on drive and flick through square leg were fours almost immediately. He punched cuts and he delivered a straight driven four as well. Class in a word.

Just about every time Australian cricket zeroes on a new young toy, the value of a hardened, experienced pro does the job.

Daniel Sams is 31 but he’s still an absolute bankable asset in T20 cricket. When McSweeney hit him sweetly over long-off for six to open the 12th over, the Heat were cruising at 1-104.

The Gabba pitch always gives a bit to the clever paceman and Sams almost turned the game with four wickets in his final over. His change of pace forced skied shots and he cleverly mixed up his angles.
 
The dates for this season’s new-look KFC Big Bash League Finals Series have been confirmed, with a new four-match structure to take place from January 19-24.

The top four teams at the end of the regular season will secure a finals berth and, as has been the case in previous seasons, the top two teams will be rewarded with a double-chance. The KFC BBL|13 champions will be crowned at the Final on January 24.

Friday, January 19: ‘The Qualifier – First-placed team v second-placed team
Saturday, January 20: ‘The Knockout’ – Third-placed team v fourth-placed team
Monday, January 22: ‘The Challenger’ – Loser of The Qualifier v winner of The Knockout
Wednesday, January 24: The Final – winner of The Qualifier v winner of The Challenger

All four matches will be played in prime time, with exact timings to be confirmed.

Venue availability issues due to the respective men’s Test matches in Adelaide and Brisbane mean should they qualify, the Strikers home venue for the first two finals will be Canberra’s Manuka Oval, with the Challenger and The Final able to be held at Adelaide Oval. All Brisbane Heat home finals will be hosted at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Superstar Glenn Maxwell took three wickets and played a match-winning hand with the bat as the Stars made it two wins in a row

Melbourne Stars have continued their KFC BBL resurgence, with captain Glenn Maxwell leading the side to a second consecutive victory for the first time in almost two years in a rain-affected clash with the Hobart Hurricanes.

The Stars restricted the Hurricanes to 155 before wet and wild conditions blanketed Blundstone Arena during the innings break and reduced the target to 67 runs from seven overs under the DLS method.

Maxwell started the chase with Sam Harper but was stranded at the bowler's end as Hurricanes quick Riley Meredith (2-15) sparked the hosts with two wickets in the opening over on Thursday night.

Meredith sent the first ball of the Stars' innings down the leg side for a wide, but then had Harper out hooking off the next delivery.

Marcus Stoinis was out three balls later in much the same way, and when Canes captain Nathan Ellis bowled Hilton Cartwright in the next over the Stars were reeling at 3-6.

But Maxwell (35no off 18) and Thomas Rogers (21no) steered the Stars (2-3) home to make it back-to-back victories after a slow start to their BBL|13 campaign.

Maxwell (3-29) had earlier taken three middle-order wickets to help restrict the Hurricanes to a modest total.

"I took a gamble to bring myself on," Maxwell told Fox Cricket.

"With that little bit of drizzle and that rain it actually changed the pitch, I was able to get the ball to skid on a bit faster.

"You get a couple of lucky wickets with just timing."

Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf (3-24) chipped in with three scalps late in the innings as the 'Canes were bowled out with two balls remaining after a bright start.

Mac Wright (33) set the pace early for the Hurricanes until mistiming a waist-high full toss off Usama Mir to Stoinis diving low at deep midwicket."

Caleb Jewell (45) maintained the momentum for the Hurricanes and smashed three consecutive boundaries off Beau Webster in the ninth over.

The Hurricanes opener sent a scare through the Stars' camp with a sharp straight drive off Maxwell that left the Australia international needing attention after getting a hand on the ball to prevent a certain boundary.

The off-spinner responded with the next delivery, darting a straight ball into Jewell's pads to trap him lbw for 45 off 37 balls and spark a middle-order collapse.

Nikhil Chaudhary looked set to rescue the hosts with positive play as he took 10 runs off two balls from Rauf.

But the Stars quick responded by taking pace off the ball as Chaudhary swung hard again but was caught in the deep for 32 off 16 balls before the rain arrived.

Who Is Nikhil Chaudhary? Ex-India U19 Star Setting Big Bash League On Fire

Nikhil Chaudhary has emerged as a rising star in the Big Bash League (BBL) thanks to all-round performances for Hobart Hurricanes. The 27-year-old, who represented India U-19 cricket team, showed his mettle with the bat when he took Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf to the cleaners to slam 32 off just 16 balls against Melbourne Stars. Chaudhary was once again in the news during the match against Sydney Thunder as he performed with the ball and took two wickets to guide his team to victory.

Originally from Delhi, Chaudhary moved to Punjab with his family at an young age and his initial dream was to become a fast bowler with an action that resembled former Australia pacer Brett Lee. "I started as a fast bower. I wanted the same action like Brett Lee as did everyone at school," he told ESPNCricinfo.

The dreams of becoming a fast bowler were never fulfilled but as an all-rounder, he found success for the U-19 cricket team and was even selected for the Punjab team. During his stint with Punjab, he played with stalwarts like Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh - an experience that helped him.

"I learned a lot of things from him, like how to build an innings, tackle big targets and how to go deep into the innings," Chaudhary said of Yuvraj during the interview. "I knew my capability of scoring runs at any stage of the game. I really wanted to crack the IPL and also play for India."

In 2019, Chaudhary trialed twice with Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai Indians but there was no success. However, things changed when he travelled to Brisbane for a holiday with his family and with the borders shutting down due to COVID-19, the cricketer decided to try his luck in Australia.

Melbourne Stars’ Sam Harper taken to hospital in stable condition after scary nets incident

There were concerning scenes at Melbourne Stars training on Friday, with keeper-batsman Sam Harper involved in a scary incident at the Melbourne Cricket Ground nets.

The Stars confirmed in a statement to foxsports.com.au that Harper was struck in the head whilst batting at training and was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Tom Morris, who first reported the news, wrote that “those who saw the incident were visibly shaken and emotional”. One witness described the incident as “gruesome”.

Harper has a history of concussion and head knocks, having been involved in a nasty collision with Nathan Ellis in a game between the Renegades and Hurricanes in early 2020.

That was understood to be his eighth concussion according to The Sydney Morning Herald, who reported at the time that Harper first suffered head knocks while playing football for Yarra Valley Grammar.

Before that, Harper was at the centre of another terrifying incident in 2017, this time in a Sheffield Shield match.

On that occasion Harper was accidentally struck on the head by Jake Lehmann’s bat while wicketkeeping at the Adelaide Oval.

That serious concussion resulted in a “very lonely” hospital stint for Harper, who later had to learn how to walk again.

“It’s certainly a time of my life I won’t forget … I wouldn’t wish it on anyone,” Harper said in 2020, speaking to former teammate Guy Walker on his podcast series, The Athlete Diaries.

“It was such a fluke that the bat would hit me in the head, it has never happened before. I don’t remember too much about the day. I remember that night, the first time I remember when I was conscious and could actually think where I was, in a hospital at the Royal Adelaide hospital, I wasn’t really sure what happened that day. I was just feeling horrendous.

“The next three weeks were very lonely, I’m not going to shy away from that. They were probably the worst three weeks of my life.

“... I was in a walking frame for seven days. There was something in the back of my brain which sends signals to the legs … they help you walk two steps forward which we take for granted, but at the time these weren’t as clear as they should’ve been which was making the simple task of walking (hard)."

“I literally had a physio walking me 10 steps down the hallway helping me walk again. My brain knew how to walk but my legs weren’t coming to terms with that. I was almost embarrassed.”
