Dubai: Star player Chris Gayle has decided to leave the IPL’s bio-secure environment due to “bubble fatigue”, his team Punjab Kings said on Thursday. Gayle had played two games for the team since IPL’s resumption and now wants to refresh before the T20 World Cup beginning next month.

The West Indian flew into Dubai from another bio-bubble created for the CPL and staying in a protected environment has taken a toll on him like many other international players in COVID times. Over the last few months, I have been a part of the CWI bubble, CPL bubble followed by the IPL bubble, and I wish to mentally recharge and refresh myself,” said Gayle in a statement issued by Punjab Kings.

A comment by former West Indian fast bowler Curtly Ambrose that Chris Gayle will not be his automatic pick in the Playing XI for the ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman has angered the ‘Universe Boss’, who has hit back, saying, “I have no respect" for the legendary pace bowler.

Gayle, who created quite a stir by abruptly quitting the Punjab Kings bio-bubble during the IPL 2021 Dubai leg recently to “mentally refresh" himself for the ICC T20 World Cup, was a part of the 2012 and 2016 West Indies World Cup-winning sides.

“I am speaking about Curtly Ambrose. I am singling out Curtly Ambrose, one of your own. I highly respected him when I came into the West Indies team," Gayle said on The Island Tea Morning Show, a St Kitts-based radio station, on Tuesday.

“When I just joined the team, I looked up to this man. But I am now speaking from my heart. I don’t know what, since he retired, what he had against Chris Gayle. Those negative things he has been saying within the press, I don’t know if he is looking for attention, but he is getting the attention. So, I am just giving back the attention which he requires and which he needs.

“I can tell you personally, and you can let him know that Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss, have no respect for Curtly Ambrose whatsoever," added Gayle.

Gayle said that Ambrose “continues to be negative" about the team, adding that “we don’t need negative energy" ahead of a crucial campaign.

“I am finished with Curtly Ambrose," the 42-year-old Gayle said. “I have no respect, any time I see him I will tell him as well — ‘Stop being negative, support the team ahead of the World Cup.’ This team has been selected and we need past players to support us. We need that, we don’t need negative energy. In other teams, their past players support their teams, why can’t our own support us in a big tournament like this?

“We have won the tournament twice, and we will be going for the third title. The team has seen what is happening. It is going to reflect on the team. I am not going to take anything from any senior player. Curtly Ambrose pull your socks up, alright? Support for West Indies, ok? Support West Indies, that is the thing."

Ambrose recently targeted Gayle for his lack of form as he prepares for the T20 World Cup. This year, the hot-shot cricketer has just scored 227 runs in 16 T20Is, averaging 17.46.

“For me, Gayle is definitely not an automatic choice for starting," Ambrose had said on a radio show in Barbados. “When you look at his exploits over the last 18 months, he has struggled not only for the West Indies, but other T20 franchises. The few home series we played, he hasn’t had any scores of significance."

Considering some of the legends who have represented West Indies, Gayle is by far the most Badtameez individual.

He’s got no respect for Ambrose but didn’t say anything about Kumble who also dropped him from Punjab Kings?
 
Gayle schtick was fun for a while by now he is taking himself too seriously and seems like has started to believe in the stuff we used to think he says about himself tongue in cheek.

Ambrose is a huge legend of the game and Gayle would never be as big a name as Curtly in my opinion. He is starting to lose it now I am afraid, referring to himself in the third person, calling himself Universe Boss.. growing narcissistic tendencies..

I don’t find anything disrespectful in what Ambrose said. Besides, for a Universe Boss, Gayle seems to be as sensitive as a girl. National team players around the world are subject to a lot of scrutiny. Doesn’t mean he should throw a hissy fit over a simple comment.
 
What wrong did Ambrose say here? Gayle definitely should not start in the lineup. He is well past it.

Curtly Ambrose is an achiever who has earned his stripes to have an opinion of his own which someone like Chris Gayle must learn to "respect" even if it's not in his favour, said iconic Sir Vivian Richards. (More Cricket News)

Ambrose, a known critic of the 'Universe Boss', had told a radio channel in the Caribbean that Gayle shouldn't be "an automatic choice" in the West Indies playing eleven for the T20 World Cup as he has very little performance to show even in franchise cricket for the past 18 months.

To this Gayle had lashed out on Ambrose, saying the former fast bowler of late 80's and 90's was a "negative person" for whom he had "no respect".

Richards, who had been Ambrose's first international captain, came to his former pace spearhead's defence.

"It's Curly's honest opinion and he's entitled to that and he is just as much as an achiever as Chris Gayle at the highest level," Richards told 'Daily Observer'.

"So when you hear it's coming from an individual who would have also been an achiever and being a legend in the department of the sport we would have represented, you must have respect for that too."

Richards urged Gayle to take Ambrose's criticisms positively as he might just not be the only one taking a dig at his current form.

"If I was Chris, the best positive way I would look at it would be to set my mind on what I would like to accomplish because it is just not Curtly because there are so many folks who would have had their criticisms about Gayle," added Richards.

Gayle had an angry repartee at the former pace bowling great, stating that he no longer looks up to him in respect like he did in earlier times.

He has been a legend in the Limited Overs Format but this tournament has been a bridge too far for him. Needs to be dropped for good now.
 
He has one T20I fifty since 25th March 2016

Most of his legend came from IPL where flat wickets and short boundaries suited his style of play. At the international level, he is a very good player but he is nowhere as good as his self proclamations. Now he just sounds arrogant and silly.
 
Gayle is a great cricketer. Not the GOAT but a great nonetheless. Stellar test opener, and devastating LOI player. Legend. 💪🏼
 
Looks like a shadow of his former self. Was never a fittest in the room yet still dragged his career till 42.

Should retire now. He's just there achieving nothing. May even be hurting his legacy.

Although I won't be surprised if he ends up playing next year wt20 and 2023 wc as well. Strange things happen in WI cricket.

They were never gonna succeed in this tourney and on these wkts where you need to get in and rotate the strike Wi poor fitness and lack of brains has been glaring in this tourney

I thought he would have retired after the horrible PSL he had some years back....yet played well in lesser leagues and they recalled him for a tournament on tricky pitches.

The 42-year-old veteran has been a pivotal force in the rise of West Indies cricket and clearing the air about the Jamaican's adieu, CWI chief Ricky Skerritt has said Gayle will be suitably "thanked and honoured"

West Indies host Ireland in the three-match International (ODI) Series and a one-off T20 International (T20I) from January 8 to 16. The two-time World Champions then travel to Barbados to face England in five T20Is at Kensington Oval from January 22 to 30.

"Gayle has been a phenomenal performer for Jamaica and the West Indies since he was a teenager. He deserves to be thanked and honoured by fans. Cricket West Indies will find the right way to make that happen in a manner that Chris can enjoy," Skerritt said

Gayle, who has represented West Indies in 103 Tests, 301 ODIs and 79 T20Is, was reportedly going to play the one-off T20 against Ireland to bid adieu to an illustrious international career. But Skerritt said that the board has not yet started the planning for Gayle's swansong game.

"The story about a farewell selection match for Gayle v Ireland was fabricated by mischief-makers. We're not defining what such a game (farewell) will look like. The planning has not yet commenced," he added.

Meanwhile, Kieron Pollard has returned from the hamstring injury to lead the West Indies camp. The 34-year-old all-rounder was ruled out of the tour of Pakistan after failing to recover from a hamstring injury he sustained during the 2021 T20 World Cup.

"We have tried to maintain the general make-up of the squads from the Pakistan Tour before Christmas, with the captain and some senior players coming back in," said head coach Phil Simmons.

"COVID-19 has also played a part in the final make-up of the squad. The challenges in the next couple of months are getting the young players in both squads to not only improve on their skills but maintain the attitude and desire we saw in Pakistan.

"We do need to start the year on a high. And we know both Ireland and England have very good teams, so we expect a very strong challenge as we look to improve our chances of automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023 and building the T20 team for the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022."

The Universe Boss Chris Gayle is another big name that is missing from the list of players who have registered themselves for the auction. At the age of 42, Gayle is past his best. He also seems to have played his final international match for West Indies, though a farewell appearance can't be ruled out.

Gayle, in fact, didn't fully participate in IPL 2021 either. He had pulled out of season 14 midway through the second-half in UAE. Punjab Kings had confirmed that the T20 cricket great had decided to do so because of bio-bubble fatigue. There were question marks over his continuity in the sport, and his decision to not register for IPL seems to have sort of confirmed his intentions to discontinue.

Gayle is one of the biggest legends in the tournament's history, having terrorized bowlers year after year. However, he chose to not sign up for the mega auction before this year's edition of the cash-rich league. He has now opened up about why he opted to not play IPL 2022. Gayle said that he felt he did not get the respect he deserved and was not treated "properly" in the last few seasons of the IPL.

"For the last couple of years, the way the IPL went about, I felt like I wasn't treated properly," Gayle told UK's Mirror.

"So I thought 'okay, you didn't get the respect you deserved after you did so much for the sport and IPL.' So I said 'okay, that's it, I'm not going to bother to enter the draft,' so I left it as it is," he said.

"There is always going to life after cricket so I'm just trying to adapt to normality," the southpaw added.

However, he did not rule out a return to the league next season.

"Next year I'm coming back, they need me!" said the West Indies icon, who has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and most recently, Punjab Kings.

"I've represented three teams in the IPL, Kolkata, RCB and Punjab. Between RCB and Punjab, I would love to get a title, with one of those two teams," he said.

"I had a great stint with RCB where I was more successful within the IPL, and Punjab, they've been good. I love to explore and I love challenges so let's see what happens," he added.

Chris Gayle has played 142 matches in the IPL and scored 4965 runs, including a record six centuries. He averages 39.72 with a strike rate of 148.96.

He has a record six centuries in the IPL and his knock of 175* against the now-defunct Pune Warriors for RCB in 2013 still remains the highest T20 score by any batter.

On 30th October in 2020 Chris Gayle became the first ever batter to hit 1000 T20 sixes.

Gayle retired with a career total of 1056 T20 sixes. He remains miles ahead of Pollard who takes second place with 897 sixes.

His strike rate shoots up the roof in the games he actually performed in.

The funny thing is, it took Travis Head 2 years to prove why every Indian is a choke fraud.

Indians overglorify that one innings achieved on road pitches in some random bi laterals because they simply do not have what it takes to shine in cups.

For example Travis Head has already won wtc 2023 and wc 2023 single handidely. India could have easily bundled Australia out for 100 or 150 in both cases. No one asked India to let Travis score 137 and 163 from 40- 3 lol.

These 2 innings are greater then anything Any Indian batter has ever achieved as these innings were achieved on the highest of highest of stages.

These centuries alone are worth 1000 centuries.

Kohli in over 10 years couldn't do a damn thing for him team. Botched 2022 wc against England, was a circus clown in 2024, Botched wc 2015 heck couldn't a damn thing in any cups either.

He's lucky that bumrah saved his sorry bum in the final and allowed Indians to oberglorify his stat pad 70+ in the final 🤣🤣. Otherwise people would be burning his house down.

If the conversation is about T20 then no one beats Chris Gayle but in t20is Virat Kohli stands clear with two MOTt in t20 world cups and 5 crucial knocks in knockouts of the t20 world cups.

There is no comparison here, life always gives justice to your efforts and that is why he retired with a t20 world cup and that too with a MOTM in finals.
