[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Is the end getting close for Azhar Ali's career?

Azhar Ali should retire after the tour of Australia

He is a nice guy and has served pakistan very well in the last 9 years but for last couple of years he has only been the shadow of the player he once was. Staying on will harm his legacy more than not. He has failed in 4 out of last 5 series he has played ( only was successful against nz in uae last year).

averages in the last 5 test series

against ireland away 3
against england away 16.75
against australia in UAE 25.25
Against NZ in UAE 61.4
Against South Africa away 9.83

and he is averaging 22 in the current series.

IMO its time.

The very little reflexs he had are gone, should have dropped and made to retire before this series, let alone be made captain.

Wonderful servant for Pakistan cricket but everyone has a shelf life. Age and a dodgy knee have put paid to his hopes of prolonging his Test career.

Should do the right thing and call it a day.

Last two years:

12 Tests
584 runs
25.39 average

He runs the risk of being another specialist captain.

I was willing to give Ali a shot as captain, maybe 12-18 months and the 3-4 test series Pak will play in that time but he is getting worse by the day. This was once a batsman with sublime timing and concentration to help him against the new ball. He has lost all that for a while now and is left looking like a punch drunk boxer on the ropes.

It will look like a circus
Being made captain and after one series resigns

Due to bat at number 3 tomorrow after opening in the 1st Test versus Australia.

ugh he’s going to choke the innings batting at number 3.

ugh he’s going to choke the innings batting at number 3.

His only use is as an opener.

At least he can blunt the new ball so his defensive cricket may have some value.

Batting at 3 means a loss of momentum.

I think there is something to be said about evolving your skills as your get older. Younis Khan had been transforming and improving his game with time and it worked great for him.

Azhar has a lot of experience and that is extremely important for a team where players learn their skills on the job.

Adelaide Pink Ball Tests are like 60 over ODIs.

You need to keep the score moving, because if there are no rain interruptions you only want to bat 60 overs.

And now his average is down to 24.70 in the last two years.

Since Misbah and Younis retired, his Test average is just 26.92.

But worse than that, his Test average outside Asia since they retired is a pathetic 12.33 - he has scored 185 runs in 15 innings in 8 Tests, with just a single fifty in those 15 innings.

It was a monumental error for Misbah to appoint him as captain when he is clearly absolutely finished, but it was also negligent of the PCB Board to endorse such a mistaken choice as captain.

This is what I would do if I was Mickey Arthur.

I would say the following to Azhar Ali:

"Congratulations on a wonderful year. I've been proud to have you in the team I coach.

It's time for us to look forward and try to plan the next stage of your career.

As you know, you are the same age as Alastair Cook and AB De Villiers. It probably seems strange to you that their careers are coming to an end while you are in such awesome form. But I'd like to talk a little about that.

Misbah and Younis were great servants to Pakistan cricket and they saved us from disgrace. They were the best trainers we had, the fittest players we had. Younis was probably the greatest ever Pakistan batsman. They were brilliant role models to young players like you.

But I'm not sure whether you noticed what happened to them as batsmen when they become older than anyone else in world cricket. They still scored some big innings, especially in Asia, but if you think back to South Africa, to England, to Australia, I think something else happened.

Younis kept his average up, but he failed in 5 innings out of 6 in South Africa, in 6 innings out of 7 in England and in 8 innings out of 10 in Australia and New Zealand.

Think back. It's true, isn't it? You were there, Azhar!

And the consistency of those Younis Khan failures meant that we lost 8 of those 10 Test matches.

This happens to every batsman outside Asia. You reach a certain age and you fail much more often than you succeed, even if your occasional big innings keep your average up.

I'm telling you this Azhar because that is why Alastair Cook and AB De Villiers are at the end of the road. Soon you will be the oldest batsman left in Test cricket.

I know that you are the best batsman in the team. But I also know that sooner or later - I hope much later - this will happen to you.

Like Cook, that's why I'm relieved that you are not the new captain. I know you could do it, but I want you to focus on keeping your batting world class for as long as possible, without the worries of captaincy.

Take every Test series one at a time. As long as you are performing, you will be the first batsman named in the team.

Where I'm different to the people who went before me is that I don't think we can afford for two veteran batsmen to lose form at the same time. I want you as the only older batsman in the team. That's why there is no road back for Salman Butt, even though he is your age. You stayed clean and he didn't, so you are the one who stays as the senior batsman. It's also why there will be no Fawad Alam.

In Australia, many generations of cricketer have been influenced by Ian Chappell, who is a great believer in going out at the top. Don't wait until your performances are declining. When you are not the batsman you used to be, go. Don't wait to be dropped.

That would be great advice for you and every other Pakistan cricketer.

Make the most of your ability and your career. At this late stage, when you are 32, don't bother with the captaincy, just enjoy the time left to you as a batsman.

But once you think you can't guarantee yourself at least 35 runs in 3/4 of your innings outside Asia, that's when it will be time to call it a day."
This was posted two years ago.

I really wish that Azhar Ali had listened instead of ruining his legacy by carrying on too long and accepting the captaincy when he was no longer good enough to get in the team.

I reckon Azhar should be dropped not hating but if we look at his stats there hasn't been anything significant since 2016. It's not fair to run the QeA trophy have guys work hard and have nothing to show for it at the end of the day.

In my humble opinion Azhar and Asad must go, they've been "bits and pieces" players and have had more than a generous run. Pakistan is afraid of change and that is why you'll always fail if you don't administer change and run off assumptions.

Ricky Ponting explains how Azhar Ali could have avoided his dismissal with a simple change.

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 100.000%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/s/f4b0r/jklnxo" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Average outside Asia since MisYou retired now drops further:

8 Tests
16 innings
194 runs
1 fifty
0 hundreds
Average of 12.13

Since his 32nd birthday his Test average around the world has been just 26.31.

It’s over.

People held on to the hope that back in Australia he’d regain his lost “form”. But this isn’t bad form. It’s being way past his best. It’s unfixable.

But he averaged 15.50 this series.

After 9.83 in South Africa.

After 16.75 in England.

After 3.00 in Ireland.

Azhar Ali is finished. Goneburgers.

he is our main batsman just going through tough time.will come good after few matches.
He has been getting worse and worse for almost 3 years.

In what way is he your main batsman? He averages 26.31 over the last 2.5 years.

And he averages 12.13 outside Asia.

Age is making him get worse and worse and worse. He’s never going to get better.

It’s over. He’s a passenger, a dead weight bringing down his team.

And every foreign batsman his age has already retired. Or been forcibly retired.

Updated - Azhar Ali in Test cricket in the last 2 years:

Innings - 25
Runs - 602
Average - 24.08
13 scores of less than ten
16 scores of fifteen or less

Same issue again, trying to work the ball to the leg-side. Head all over the place, bat turned too quickly.

Has always been a pathetic player. Not sure hoe he managed to play for so long. Azhar and Asad were supposed to succeed Yousuf and Younis but both of these players are pathetic and should not be disposed. Bring in some younger players and develop them. I don't understand why PCB invested so much time in the both of these when from the beginning it was obvious that they would never make it.

These stats need to be relayed at every PC he or Misbah come for after this game. He has no leg to stand on here, the guy is completely finished and needs to retire.

This should be it. There is no way he gets to play the SL series, on current form.

wait for Asad Shafiq and his angled bat outside edges. can't believe these are oue seniors with 10 years of experience. Absolute garbage. They should be discarded just like Sarfraz. No time for these players.

Another disappointing performance by Azhar

You can't establish a high performance professional culture in the team when your two most experienced batsmen are not delivering and leading by example for the younger lot. Time to look to the future and get new blood in. India moved on from Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Gambhir and Co when their performances started dipping, who is Azhar Ali in comparison

Should call it ends. He's probably 37-38 years old, may get a score here and there in next few years but will be overall rubbish. Should be dropped if he doesn't retire.

Azhar's South Africa performance should've been a warning. Doesn't matter if Azhar opens or comes in at 3, his reflexes have gone.

He has a triple century in Australia, something Sachin, Viv, Lara doesn't have.

Warner made a triple to cancel that effort.

Warner scored at home, Azhar scored in Australia, a place that is considered the toughest along with South Africa for batsmen from the subcontinent.

Wait, Azhar ali made triple ton against WI at UAE. Against Australia he only made a double century.

Azhar scored a triple-hundred against West Indies in the UAE. He scored a double-hundred in Australia.

He's been averaging in 20s for two years only, lets give him at least 5 years to regain his form. :salute

azhar and asad are decent support players

That wasn’t a problem when YK & Misbah were around but since they’ve retired they’ve not stepped up from support players to leaders. So what’s the point of keeping them on if there’s plenty more like them waiting in domestics?

Time for both Azhar and Asad to be discarded with permanently along with Ifti Chacha

Can we talk about Azhar Ali please?

* Couldn't find an appropriate thread but if mods feel that this belongs in another thread, please feel free to merge . .

Just a couple of things to keep it short:

1.) Azhar Ali is averaging 12 in the last 2 test series . . SA and Aus

2.) Azhar Ali is averaging 21 in the last 2 years

3.) Azhar Ali is averaging 24 in the last 3 years

A.) Azhar Ali averaged 42 in year 2017

B.) Azhar Ali averaged 30 in year 2018

C.) Azhar Ali averages 10.5 in year 2019

Can someone please do us all a favor and text this to Misbah and Azhar himself and circulate it widely in the media just so that next time they come and talk about "temporary loss in form", we can talk about how they're completely BSing us!

Just for funs sake . .

Yasir Shah averages 18 in the last 2 years

Mohammad Amir 15 from 1 jan 2018 to his last test match

Shadab Khan over 30

Give Azhar and Asad one last series against Sri Lanka.
For better or worse they have done enough to deserve to play atleast one Test match at home.

One last series, one last series..! these one last series to see if a miracle is going to happen is a waste of time.

How does that help? It’s a terrible idea, especially if he scores cheap runs at home.

It’s like when someone who has recently stopped smoking has a bad day and wants a cigarette.

The worst possible outcome is that the ex-smoker enjoys it. Because then they are going to do it again and again.

If Azhar scores runs on a dead wicket against a club quality attack then he’ll carry on, and carry on failing in more challenging games.

I’m all for Azhar retiring, but who will replace him as a captain and who will replace him as our #3 batsman?

I know most on this thread are calling for his removal, but I hope he takes some confidence from this innings today. He looked more fluent than he has in a while. He'll get even better batting conditions in Karachi so I hope he makes the most of them. Desperately needs to work on his running and calling with Abid though.

Azhar needs two runs to pass Salim Malik to go 5th all-time for Pakistan in Tests. Hopefully he passes him in what should be his last Test match at Karachi.

I don't see him going anywhere:

Skipper
Senior player
Quite a few youngsters in the team

All the above in his favour.

Quite a few youngsters in the team?

Inzamam’s last Test team had 8 players under 30.

This team has 4 players under 30!

I’ve never seen a mediocre Test team with so many veterans in it!

Sorry to say, but the best thing for Pakistan is for Azhar to fail in the next test.

Swap him with a young batsman and give them preparation before we play England in England in 2020.

Azhar I guarantee will FAIL in England 100%.

Azhar Ali offers nothing to the Pakistani team anymore. Pathetic captain, can't score big runs either. Ganguly was axed and dropped even though his performances were much better than Azhar Ali's, such is the massive gulf in standards between the two countries.

Depends now on shan masood , haris and fawad.

Depends if haris and shan score in the next match , if azhar keeps failing then they will have to give the ever knocking fawad alam a chance.

Shan
Abid
Azhar/haris
Babar
Shafiq
Fawad

These are the 7 batsmen at the moment and in case the openers fail then there is imran butt knocking at the door as well.

Highest score of 36 this year. He should retire while he still averages 40 plus.

We’ve been patient with him and asad, any other team would’ve dropped them a year ago and given others chances. These failures are a blessing in disguise maybe Fawad will get his chance and Haris might be replaced by saad ali, saud shakeel or usman salhuddin.

Hope SL take his wicket cheaply in the next test, and maybe even win.

The only way to get rid of him!

Another poor dismissal from Azhar. Little bit of bounce. You could say unlucky but stats show it has been happening quite often lately. He can still be a good player in Pak, but starting to look like he can’t recover the old form, especially abroad.

Actually the best time to remove Azhar as captain would be after this series.

PCB can save face by saying he was an interim appointment, he's seen us through the Australia series (which let's face it was a guaranteed defeat under any captain due to the gulf in quality), and he oversaw the homecoming of Pakistan Test cricket.

The first series for the new captain, most probably Babar, would be the Bangladesh series at home so an ideal start.

Azhar's provided a good number of years service. Should retire with honour and not have to be forcefully booted out. Azhar should know himself that his time is up.

It's the manner of dismissals that are a concern. If he was getting out to great deliveries then it wouldn't be a problem, but he's getting out to some pretty ordinary balls.

This is the current Pakistan batting order and ages:

30 - Shan Masood
32 - Abid Ali
35 in February - Azhar Ali
34 in January - Asad Shafiq
25 - Babar Azam
31 in January - Haris Sohail

I wouldn’t have a problem if Abid Ali was the oldest player in the team, a bit like when Stephen Cook debuted for South Africa aged 33.

The problem is that Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq are really, really elderly to be playing Test cricket, and in the last two and a half years they average 25 and 37 respectively.

Going back to the point made by Saj , the players under 30 are the keeper, some of the bowlers and Babar Azam.

The batsmen are all old apart from Babar Azam. I’m not seeing what Azhar Ali’s “experience” brings to this team.

It looks much more like he is a weak captain, completely dependent upon Misbah’s patronage for having an ongoing career, and that his value is not to his team or to his country but simply to Misbah as his puppet.

Azhar Ali speaking after the first Test against SL:

We're happy with the way our batsmen batted. The sun was out and the conditions were good but everyone tried to apply themselves. Babar and Abid played really well, special congratulations to Abid for making a hundred on debut.

I was feeling confident as I have in the last 4-5 Test matches, it looked good but I got out. It's not good to score 30s and 40s and get out but I'm trying my best but I've spent time in the middle and I'll try to build on that in the next Test.

The fast-bowlers showed a lot of skill in this match, still a lot of things to improve with control and consistency. The good thing is that they look threatening and put balls in the right areas and they can move the ball off the seam and in the air. They are capable of picking up wickets, it's all about holding it together for a longer period of time. Good balls in Test cricket don't always get you wickets, it needs to be good over and sessions to get teams out.

It's totally different to be playing Tests at home. I would like to thank the crowd for coming and supporting the Test despite knowing there would be no result. It was fantastic to see. We have been missing this. As a bowler/batsman, we didn't feel that backing from the crowd before, it's a special feeling that we had to wait 9/10 years for.

Making Azhar captain was a disaster of epic proportions. Magnificent blunder in so many different ways.

Only a truly incompetent organization can make a decision this bad.

The exact opposite of what I would have expected form Wasim Khan when he was hired
