Rohit Sharma shares update on Rishabh Pant's injury

Skipper Rohit Sharma gave an update on Rishabh Pant's injury that saw him walk off the field during day two of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma provided an update on wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant after he walked off the field injured during day two of the ICC World Test Championship game against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

Pant was seen limping off the field during the day's play after being hit on the knee roll by Ravindra Jadeja's delivery in the 37th overof the New Zealand innings.

Speaking in the press conference after the day's play Rohit said that the left-hander was being closesly assessed and walked off the field as a precautionary measure.

"Unfortunately, the ball hit straight on his knee cap, the same leg on which he has got a surgery done. So he has got a bit of swelling on it. It’s the same knee on which he got the surgery," Rohit said.

"And you know the muscles are quite tender at this point in time, so it's a precautionary measure.

"We don't want to take a risk. Rishabh doesn't want to take a risk because he has gone through a massive surgery on that particular leg. That was the reason for him to go inside. Hopefully, at night he can recover and we will see him back on the field tomorrow."

This guy was so unfortunate. He played very well but fell short of just 1 run.

Gone for 99. Nervous nineties.

Pant was trying to slog unnecessary so many times early in the innings on a very tricky wicket... He is easily the best wickie bat since Gilchrist but wished he played more maturely...

Following the defeat in the 1st Test against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma spoke about Rishabh Pant's injury at the post-match press conference:

"He has had a massive operation on his knee. We need to be a little careful about you know, where he's at and what he is to us. Even when he was batting, he was not comfortably running. You know, he was trying to only put the ball in the stands but again with someone like him, we just need to be extra careful, because he's had a lot of minor surgeries, and one big surgery on his knee."

"Rishabh Pant has gone through a lot of trauma, to be honest in the last 1.5 years. So it's just about being extra careful with him. So, you know, when you're keeping, you have to bend every ball with your knee going down, and the wicket being what it was, we thought it was the right thing to do for him to stay inside and then get 100% ready for the next one."

Looks like Pant might be rested for next test and they ask Jurel or KL to play. Hopefully KL gets dropped, he doesn't deserve to play in Asian conditions.

He is successful more often than not. I think he starts to over think he may lose his magic.

In my opinion this lad has the X Factor let him play as he wants, he is one of the rare players ( in his career so far) that should be allowed to play their natural game without tampering with him.

Sunil Gavaskar writing in his column for local sports media outlet:

"Rishabh Pant is another player who doesn’t possess the slim waist that these fitness purists seem to want, but what an impact player he is. Let’s not forget that he also keeps wickets all day, which not only requires getting up and down for around six hours of play but also running to the stumps to gather the throws. So, please discard these yoyo-yoyo tests and instead assess how strong a player is mentally. That will be a true indicator of a player’s fitness. If a player can bat the whole day or bowl 20 overs in a day, he is match-fit, regardless of how slim or not his waist is."

Rishabh Pant released by Delhi Capitals ahead of mega auction

Rishabh Pant has been released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2025 auction set to be held later this year. He led the Delhi-based franchise in the IPL 2024 season, finishing sixth in the points table.

Pant has been part of the Capitals’ set up since 2016 and was made captain ahead of the 2021 season in place of an injured Shreyas Iyer; he was retained as a captain in IPL 2022.

Pant made a comeback in IPL 2024 after recovering from the severe injuries he sustained in a life-threatening car accident in December 2022. Upon his return, he was reinstated as captain of the Delhi Capitals and, showing his top form, scored 446 runs in what turned out to be another average season for the team.

Pant had not played a T20I since his car accident in December 2022, but a strong performance in IPL 2024 earned him a spot in this year’s T20 World Cup, where India went on to win the title.

The 27-year-old has scored 3284 runs in 111 matches in the IPL.

Sharing his honest opinion on the Test captaincy subject, Kaif feels wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is the only 'worthy' successor to Rohit for the leadership role in the red-ball format, he said:

"From the current team, only Rishabh Pant is the contention to be Test captain. He's worthy of it, whenever he's played, he's put the Indian team in front. Whichever number he comes to play, he's ready to play a match-winning knock. He's scored in all types of conditions be it England, Australia or South Africa. Be it seaming to turning tracks, he's a complete batter,"

"When Rishabh Pant will be playing his last Test match, he will retire as a legend. He's shown that already, his keeping has improved drastically. Till he was at the crease, New Zealand didn't breathe easy. Hence, I believe from the current lot, if you're looking for a future captain, Rishabh Pant deserves to be Rohit Sharma's successor, especially in Test cricket,"

Basit Ali speaking on his YouTube channel:

"Rishabh Pant scored 60 in the first innings and 64 in the second. What can I say about this kid? People say he should go for INR 25 crore in the IPL auction. However, I think he should be sold for INR 50 crore. When he batted on this pitch, it seemed like a flat track. He hit wherever he wanted to but his shot selection was good,"

Our test team is basically Pant and Bumrah, along with 9 passengers.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra stated on his YouTube channel:

"When the Duleep Trophy teams were picked, Rishabh Pant was selected, but Abhimanyu Easwaran was the captain of that team. Pant featured as a player but not a captain in that tournament. We were left wondering if he is no longer a captaincy candidate."

"But now that home season is over, we suddenly feel he is the captain, he is the saviour, our crisis man, one who can even play in poor batting conditions. He is the only one who can play with dominance, playing with so much confidence, he can hit sixes and has the defensive game."

"So was Pant misjudged? I mean, he was not named as a captain in the Duleep Trophy, and now he is the most valuable Indian player in Test cricket, or even across the globe."

Played well. Didn't look unsettled by the bounce or pace but played a little lazy...

MILESTONE ALERT

Rishabh Pant becomes only the third Indian batter, after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, to reach 2,000 runs in World Test Championship history

Rishabh Pant has shattered Shreyas Iyer's record, becoming the most expensive player in IPL auction history. Pant was sold to the Lucknow Super Giants for a staggering Rs 27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. The bidding war intensified when Delhi Capitals exercised the Right to Match card, prompting LSG to raise their bid from Rs 20.75 crore to Rs 27 crore.

Rishabh Pant Made "Clear His Desire To Captain India...": DC Co-Owner Parth Jindal On Star Wicketkeeper

Delhi Capitals (DC) co-owner Parth Jindal stated that the franchise's split with star India wicketkeeper-batter and marquee player Rishabh Pant was due to differences in "philosophies" regarding franchise management, and had nothing to do with financial issues. Pant became the most expensive player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history when Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) purchased him for a staggering Rs 27 crore during the IPL mega auction held in Jeddah on Sunday.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo about Rishabh's departure, Parth said, "It was just a different philosophy of how he wanted the franchise to operate and how we--the owners--wanted the franchise to operate. That is what caused it. It has nothing to do with money. Money has never been an issue for Rishabh, and money's never been an issue for us. I guess the three of us (Kiran Grandhi, Jindal, and Pant) were on different wavelengths. He took a call at the end of it. We tried everything, but he decided eventually that it was time to move on."

Parth admitted that the split had been "devastating" for him personally. "I love the boy like my own brother. He took a call at the end of the day. We tried our best. He made the decision, and we have to respect it," he added.

Parth clarified that leadership was not a contentious issue leading to Pant's departure, though the wicketkeeper-batter has aspirations of captaining India someday.

"We gave him some feedback regarding leadership. We suggested ways he could improve, but we were quite clear about his ambitions. We know where he wants to go. He has made it amply clear that his dream and desire is to captain India, and that starts with captaining an IPL team," he concluded.

The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter is an all-format player for India and a livewire on the field. Known for his ability to deliver on big occasions in Test cricket, Pant has an equally solid T20 game. Though his T20I statistics show 1,209 runs in 76 matches at an average of 23.25 and a strike rate of nearly 128, his overall T20 numbers are far more impressive, with 5,022 runs in 202 matches at an average of 31.78, a strike rate exceeding 145, including two centuries and 25 fifties.

Pant has been a vital part of the Delhi Capitals since 2016, scoring 3,284 runs in 110 matches at an average of 35.31, with a century and 18 fifties. He was appointed team captain in 2021 and led DC to the playoffs that same season.

When it comes to earnings directly from the game, Virat Kohli isn’t the number one anymore. Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has overtaken stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to become the highest-paid Indian cricketer, thanks to his impressive IPL and BCCI contracts.

While talking to a local sports media outlet, former India cricketer Rahul Dravid recently recalled wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant’s match-winning knock during the historic Gabba Test in Brisbane during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21:

"I think Rishabh's was an incredible performance. Watching Rishabh there and chasing to get 89 to win that Test match at the Gabba, with everything on the line and such a depleted side, to put in that kind of performance under that kind of pressure-truly sensational."

"What a special cricketer he's been. He's just taken to Test cricket like a duck to water. It's just phenomenal. I mean, it's hard to imagine that, after Dhoni left, you felt there might be some time for someone to come in and replace him. I'm not saying he's replaced him, but certainly in Test cricket, his performances have been absolutely sensational."

if batsmen find him difficult to read maybe not surprising if pant does too

hes a really good player, most likely the next long term skipper of india.

Pant might be fearless but sometimes you need more cautious approach to save the game. Let's see what he will do today

he is a world class player but he is very dumb sometimes.
he needs to mature a bit.

although i dont blame him, our top order is rubbish with the two old farts and the model.

Pant doesn’t have what it takes to be an ATG cricketer. In a long run, his SENA average will drop to 30. Career avg 42, 6000 runs.

His game involves too much risk to warrant a higher average.

His game works well on tough pitches and on low scoring games where a four out of nowhere is worth gold. But normally in Test matches and even in One Days you don't need to take that much risk to get a boundary or score in singles and doubles.

Pant has been really poor ever since he came back to the team.

Pant has been a bunny fo Cummins in this series so far.

Pant was the highest run scorer in our series vs Nz. He also averaged 54 against Bangladesh when they toured India, this is the first series he has failed in since his comeback.

3 times he got out trying to defend. That is not his game. But situation demands caution. He is at his best when he is positive. If top order doesn't fire he is going to continue failing.

What I meant was he is poor as per his exalted standards he set pre injury.
