Rohit Sharma shares update on Rishabh Pant's injury

Skipper Rohit Sharma gave an update on Rishabh Pant's injury that saw him walk off the field during day two of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma provided an update on wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant after he walked off the field injured during day two of the ICC World Test Championship game against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

Pant was seen limping off the field during the day's play after being hit on the knee roll by Ravindra Jadeja's delivery in the 37th overof the New Zealand innings.

Speaking in the press conference after the day's play Rohit said that the left-hander was being closesly assessed and walked off the field as a precautionary measure.

"Unfortunately, the ball hit straight on his knee cap, the same leg on which he has got a surgery done. So he has got a bit of swelling on it. It’s the same knee on which he got the surgery," Rohit said.

"And you know the muscles are quite tender at this point in time, so it's a precautionary measure.

"We don't want to take a risk. Rishabh doesn't want to take a risk because he has gone through a massive surgery on that particular leg. That was the reason for him to go inside. Hopefully, at night he can recover and we will see him back on the field tomorrow."

This guy was so unfortunate. He played very well but fell short of just 1 run.

Gone for 99. Nervous nineties.

Pant was trying to slog unnecessary so many times early in the innings on a very tricky wicket... He is easily the best wickie bat since Gilchrist but wished he played more maturely...

Following the defeat in the 1st Test against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma spoke about Rishabh Pant's injury at the post-match press conference:

"He has had a massive operation on his knee. We need to be a little careful about you know, where he's at and what he is to us. Even when he was batting, he was not comfortably running. You know, he was trying to only put the ball in the stands but again with someone like him, we just need to be extra careful, because he's had a lot of minor surgeries, and one big surgery on his knee."

"Rishabh Pant has gone through a lot of trauma, to be honest in the last 1.5 years. So it's just about being extra careful with him. So, you know, when you're keeping, you have to bend every ball with your knee going down, and the wicket being what it was, we thought it was the right thing to do for him to stay inside and then get 100% ready for the next one."

Looks like Pant might be rested for next test and they ask Jurel or KL to play. Hopefully KL gets dropped, he doesn't deserve to play in Asian conditions.

He is successful more often than not. I think he starts to over think he may lose his magic.

In my opinion this lad has the X Factor let him play as he wants, he is one of the rare players ( in his career so far) that should be allowed to play their natural game without tampering with him.

Sunil Gavaskar writing in his column for local sports media outlet:

"Rishabh Pant is another player who doesn’t possess the slim waist that these fitness purists seem to want, but what an impact player he is. Let’s not forget that he also keeps wickets all day, which not only requires getting up and down for around six hours of play but also running to the stumps to gather the throws. So, please discard these yoyo-yoyo tests and instead assess how strong a player is mentally. That will be a true indicator of a player’s fitness. If a player can bat the whole day or bowl 20 overs in a day, he is match-fit, regardless of how slim or not his waist is."

Rishabh Pant released by Delhi Capitals ahead of mega auction

Rishabh Pant has been released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2025 auction set to be held later this year. He led the Delhi-based franchise in the IPL 2024 season, finishing sixth in the points table.

Pant has been part of the Capitals’ set up since 2016 and was made captain ahead of the 2021 season in place of an injured Shreyas Iyer; he was retained as a captain in IPL 2022.

Pant made a comeback in IPL 2024 after recovering from the severe injuries he sustained in a life-threatening car accident in December 2022. Upon his return, he was reinstated as captain of the Delhi Capitals and, showing his top form, scored 446 runs in what turned out to be another average season for the team.

Pant had not played a T20I since his car accident in December 2022, but a strong performance in IPL 2024 earned him a spot in this year’s T20 World Cup, where India went on to win the title.

The 27-year-old has scored 3284 runs in 111 matches in the IPL.

Sharing his honest opinion on the Test captaincy subject, Kaif feels wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is the only 'worthy' successor to Rohit for the leadership role in the red-ball format, he said:

"From the current team, only Rishabh Pant is the contention to be Test captain. He's worthy of it, whenever he's played, he's put the Indian team in front. Whichever number he comes to play, he's ready to play a match-winning knock. He's scored in all types of conditions be it England, Australia or South Africa. Be it seaming to turning tracks, he's a complete batter,"

"When Rishabh Pant will be playing his last Test match, he will retire as a legend. He's shown that already, his keeping has improved drastically. Till he was at the crease, New Zealand didn't breathe easy. Hence, I believe from the current lot, if you're looking for a future captain, Rishabh Pant deserves to be Rohit Sharma's successor, especially in Test cricket,"

Basit Ali speaking on his YouTube channel:

"Rishabh Pant scored 60 in the first innings and 64 in the second. What can I say about this kid? People say he should go for INR 25 crore in the IPL auction. However, I think he should be sold for INR 50 crore. When he batted on this pitch, it seemed like a flat track. He hit wherever he wanted to but his shot selection was good,"
